On shutdown, imac seems to go to sleep rather than shut down

I am writing about my son's 266 MHZ iMac (Blueberry?). Recently, on shutdown it doesn't seem to completely shut down. Rather, it seems to just go to sleep. (The power button stays orange, although moving the mouse and typing on the keyboard doesn't wake the machine up.) Then, when we restart, we get the startup chime and we can hear the hard drive spinning, but the power button never changes from orange to green and the monitor stays dark. More frustrating is the fact that we can't force a restart -- pushing the power button on the iMac itself and holding in doesn't do it and putting a paper clip in the reset hole doesn't do it either. We have to pull the plug (as bad as that is) to shut it down, but then it starts up no problem.
This has happened both with OS 10.1 and now with OS10.2.) For now, we never shut it down, but that is not a very good option. Is there something else I should try? BTW, I've tried zapping the PRAM, but that doesn't seem to work -- I never get a second chime

Could be many things. But might be caused by a thermal sleep or shutdown from max temps being exceeded. The Mac will shut down or sleep to prevent damage.
Open Console in Applications>Utilities and navigate to system.log. Look also in "All messsges," if you have that. Enter "temperature" in the filter field, upper right corner. Copy and post with any results.
What are the temps? Get iStat Pro and post.

  • 10.5.3 on imac G5 deep sleep, won't shut down, fan runs hard

I updated to 10.5.3 from 10.5.2 on my 17" early iMac G5 and left for the weekend. When I got home, the fan on the computer was loud and the computer wouldn't wake up. I had to use the shut down button. Later, I left for a couple of hours, came back, fan loud, deep sleep, and the shut down button wouldn't work so I unplugged the computer. This happened again this evening. Checked software update and there is nothing new there.

Consider your iMac is almost dead. My first iMac was a G5 and it did not took to long till the fans got louder and louder. It was still in warranty and I took it to Apple Service. They replaced the mainboard.
Hope this info is of help!

my imac (intel core i5, OS 10.10.1) shuts down every night and will not "wake up" next morning -- it never used to do that -- if I hold down the start button more than twice for many seconds, then it will finally boot up and works fine all day – I’ve tried shutting it down and unplugging it, and that does not work -- I’ve run disk utilities checked permissions, and run anti-virus and get no adverse results – I cannot figure out what is different that causes this problem

From previous experience 3 indicates a shutdown initiated by the SMC (System Management Controller) — hardware responsible for many low-level functions including power, sleep, lights, and fan activity.
    Try resetting it:
Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

As the last post suggests, call Apple and order a replacement original disc for about $17.  They will ask you the model and serial numbers.
Your retail version of Snow Leopard OS 10.6.3 will not work on that Mac as it requires a minimum of OS X 10.6.7 to boot and operate.
Another alternative is to again borrow another Mac to install your retail Snow Leopard into an external HD or partition, upgrade it to 10.6.8 and then clone it back to a partition on your MBP.

  • IMac from 2009, 4 GB RAM. System shuts down when I use safari or make much moves on the trackpath.

I've got an iMac from 2009, 4 GB RAM. System shuts down when I use safari or make much moves on the trackpath. Use Mavericks, installed Mavericks again on clean system. Problem still exist. What now?

The 2009 iMaccan take 8 GB ram, while it should run ok with 4 it might be a rather inexpensive test to put in 8 and see if that clears up the problems.  Mavericks is going to use almost 2 GB itself so, unless you are opening a lot of applications, you should get by with 4 GB.  But I would go for 8 and see how it does.

  • Was wondering if it is possible to sync the folders in mac mail on my imac to my mac book pro rather than recreating them

was wondering if it is possible to sync the folders in mac mail on my imac to my mac book pro rather than recreating them

There are two standard protocols for receiving email, POP and IMAP. In the POP (Post Office Protocol) when messages are "read" by your email client (Mail) they are downloaded and stored on the reading computer and deleted from the POP server. When you are using IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) the messages remain on the IMAP server until they are deleted. IMAP was created for exactly the situation you are trying to achieve. For example Apple's iCloud (formerly me.com, formerly mac.com) uses IMAP protocol. So whether I access my email on my Mac, my iPhone, my iPad, or via webmail I have access to all the files in all the various mailboxes automatically because they are all seeing and using the same online mailboxes. If I delete a message on any of the varioius devices it is deleted on all of the various devices.
Whether you can use IMAP protocol or not depends on your email host and whether they have an IMAP server or not. Many ISPs do not offer IMAP because they do not want to bear the expense of the additional disk space required to store the IMAP messages. As I mentioned before Apple's free email service is by default IMAP. Google Mail offers a somewhat non-standard IMAP service. It works with Apple's email client, Mail, but it is just a bit "different".
Personally I resisted using IMAP for years. Largely because I had always used POP and was comfortable with it. Once I got an iPhone and needed to synch my email between my computer and iPhone I realized IMAP was "the only way to go."

  • Laptop won't go to sleep mode and shut down properly.

hello,           My name is Atul and i upgraded my laptop hp pavilion 15-p017tu from win 8.1 to win 10 on 29h july. My laptop was working great before the upgrade and before upgrading i updraded ( updated ) all the drivers and windows too.          so, after the upgrade i have been facing the same problem which has been shared by many peple here..i.e win doesn't go to sleep mode. In my case when ever i put the sys to sleep mode, the screen turns off but the power button doesn't blinks and i can't go back to the normal mode by using mouse curser or pressing the power button back. I have to physically shut down the system by pressing the power button for 5 seconds.         Also, my system won't shut down properly and it is the same as the sleep mode probem. I have contacted the customer care of microsoft and hp both and they did some setting changes but the problem keeps coming back. I have also told by the hp care that they will take atleast a month or two to fix this as this may be due to hardware not supporting the current driver so this might take time. They also told me to just downgrade to win 8.1 and after sometime when this poblem is fixed i can again install and upgrade win 10. If any of you guys know how to fix this problem do share it here.      thanks!!

  • Power Mac G4 power button activates sleep instead of shut down.

I am setting up my G4 as a 'backup' machine for a macbook pro. The G4 will not have a monitor attached, so I will not have access to the normal 'Apple>Shut Down' menu or key commands.
The power button on the G4 powers up the machine just fine, but pushing the power button to turn the machine off seems to put the system to sleep (including the monitor) but doesn't shut anything off.
Any ideas as to what could be causing this or how to fix it? Thanks in advance!

    Hi, Ryan -
If you are using an Apple Pro keyboard on that machine, there is a set of keystrokes which may allow you to shut it down 'in the blind' (they work with OS 9; not sure about OSX) -
Press the key combo Option-Eject (Eject is the topmost-rightmost key above the keypad). This should bring up a splash screen displaying buttons for Restart, Sleep, Cancel, and Shutdown. As I recall, the default (heavy-border or blue) button is Shutdown - pressing Return or Enter should engage it.
Note - not sure if the modifier used with Eject is Option (I think it is) or another one... I don't have a machine available at the moment which has an Apple keyboard on it with which to test.

  • Sleep vs. Shut down

I've been having a problem with my iMac G5 waking from sleep mode. If I put my machine to sleep at night and go to wake it in the morning, it freezes. After restarting it seems fine and even works O.K. after only being asleep for a short while. At first I thought this was related to the sleep light firmware update update since this behavior didn't start until after doing so, but after speaking to tech support where I purchased (not Apple) they said I should only use sleep mode if I'm going to be away for a few hours. The user guide gives a window of a few days when using sleep mode? I'm wondering if I got a valid solution or not 'cause I really prefer the sleep mode.

    Matz,
The sleep advice you mention getting doesn't sound right to me.
Have you seen this article, which appears to deal with your issue?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301283
or, if your iMac is a second generation, then:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301733
"even works O.K. after only being asleep for a short while"
I believe you're referring to the "doze" mode of sleep. There are two sleep modes, with the "doze" mode preceeding the "full sleep" mode. Awaking from the doze mode, the iMac hardly seems to have been asleep at all.
Apple's definitions of iMac G5 sleep modes:
"Doze (default): The power to the disk drive motors and the display is turned off, but the power supply and fans are still on."
"Full sleep: The main power supply is shut down. A trickle supply provides auxiliary power and keeps the DRAM state preserved for a quick recovery. The processor is powered off with its state preserved in DRAM. All non-essential clocks in the system are suspended. This mode allows the computer to meet Energy Star sleep requirements while providing the ability to start up without rebooting. This system may be awakened by administrative network packets, keyboard or mouse activity, USB device insertion or removal, or SMU scheduled wakeup."

  • IMAC takes very long to boot and and shut down.

My iMAC 21" takes very long (15-20 mts) to boot up and become responsive. It also takes More than 5 mts to shut down. The HW test and disk utility do not report any issue. I have Erased the disk and re-installed OS X 10.9.2 two times. On the second re-install, I deliberately did not restore the backup from the time machine. It works well after it settles down. I changed the mouse and have cheked the Apple wireless keyboard.
The problems began after the last security update to the best of my recollection. Since there does not appear to be any HW issue and I have re-installed the software, I am unable to determine what else I can do to resolve the issue.

Hello. Thank you for responding to my message.
I have shut down the system at 8.28am local time (took about 2 mts which is not bad). I then restarted and it took more than 10 mts to reach the login prompt. After login, it took several more minutes until all the icons were displayed at the bottom. After clicking on Safari and reaching the top hits pages also took an unresonable amount of time considering it is a quad core MAC and I am on a fibre internet connection. (Other computers at home respond quickly). I have to add that I am experiencing intermittent performane issues even when the MAC settles down after the long startup time. i.e. get to see the coloured spinning wheel several times.
I have tried my best to cut down the log size but found many unique lines as the boot took so long. So, apologies for the length of the log. The System diagnostics section in the Console app is blank with no reports at all.

  • Shutdown? How do I get windoze 10 to SHUT DOWN and TURN OFF?

I have a ThinkPad T60, with an Intel T7200 CPU, 4GB memory, ATI Fire graphics, 320GB hdd. Windoze (no not a typo) 10 as the ONLY operationg system on the machine. When I shut down the computer, it does NOT fully shut down, it goes into hyper sleep mode?
Whatever. I have NEVER in all my years of using laptops (my first was a ThinkPad 380XD with Win 95) used sleep mode or hibernate. I have found those methods of shutting down to be buggy. Windoze 10 is STILL buggy on sleep mode. Why can I NOT shut down the
comptuer properly without doing a hard shutdown? When Windoze 10 (this is why I call it windoze) restarts from its hybrid sleep mode the computer takes more than 10 minutes to boot and load into the logon screen. This happens EVERY time I use the normal shutdown
method of Start, clidking the little circle i button and choosing shutdown. It puts the computer to sleep. When recovering from this moronic sleep mode it seriously takes 10 minutes or more to eventually load the logon screen. I can turn the laptop on, go
grind coffee beans, change out the Mr Coffee filter and put in fresh grind, fill the water reservoir and start the brewing process and BREW a full 12 cup pot of coffee BEFORE Windoze 10 is ready with the logon screen! I have not been able to find settings
to select what the power button and shutdown command does. I have set the computers Power Options to NEVER SLEEP and NEVER HIBERNATE. When I shut my computer off, I want it OFF. Not going to some craptacular hybrid sleep mode that doesn't do what it's supposed
to. Keep my drivers in stasis so the computer boots faster. BULLDUST! 10 minutes is NOT faster. I can hold the power button 4 seconds and do a hard shutdown and Windoze 10 boots and loads in less than one minute with NO error message about not shutting down
    correctly. What gives?
My TP 380XD (yes it still runs) with 266mhz cpu and 96MB memory running Windows 2000 runs circles around Windoze 10 on the T60!
Oh and Cortana and Bing are about the most useless search feature I've ever had the aggravation to try.

Suspect it has "dozed" off.  Can we get your event viewer logs
Please provide us with your Event Viewer administrative logs by following these steps:
    Click Start Menu
Type eventvwr into Search programs and files (do not hit enter)
Right click eventvwr.exe and click Run as administrator
    Expand Custom Views
    Click Administrative Events
    Right click Administrative Events
Save all Events in Custom View As...
Save them in a folder where you will remember which folder and save as Errors.evtx
Go to where you saved Errors.evtx
Right click Errors.evtx -> send to -> compressed (zipped) folder
Upload the .zip file to Onedrive or a file sharing service and put a link to it in your next post
If you have updated to win 8.1 and you get the error message "the system cannot find the file specified" it is a known problem.
The work around is to edit the registry.  If you are not comfortable doing this DONT.  If you are, backup the key before you do
    Press Win+"R" and input regedit
    Navigate to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WINEVT\Channels. Delete "Microsoft-Windows-DxpTaskRingtone/Analytic"

  • MacBook Pro won't sleep or stay shut down?

Product: MacBook Pro 13" "mid 2009," 8GB RAM (3rd party RAM upgrade), 2.26GHz, Mountain Lion 10.8.2
This happens ~75% of the time:
    1) When I put it to sleep, the fans keep running, hard drive keeps spinning, and the outside front pulsing light goes through unusual on/off pulsing cycles. When I open the lid, it's at the login window. So it knows I put it to sleep, but it doesn't stay asleep. And I can't just put it to sleep and throw it in a bag -- it would overheat.
    2) When I shut down, it goes through the process, and as soon as it's off, the front pulsing light turns on, and the computer starts up again. I can't stop that from happening. So to shut down fully (for travel, unplugging power, etc), I need to force shut down (hold power button for several seconds), and that can't be good to do so many times.
I've read through so many posts online (not a totally unique issue here, Apple!), and I have done all of this:
    - archive and install
    - clear all faulty fonts
    - reset SMC
    - reset PRAM
    - removed all strange startup items (with Genius Bar guy)
    - delete /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist to re-create them
    - remove all sharing (file, printers, iTunes library)
    - turned off Bluetooth
I even did a clean install, then pulled in my stuff backed up on external HD. Unfortunately I didn't test enough if I could replicate these issues before restoring all my files and settings.
Apple Genius Bar told me that it's not a hardware issue -- that's all been checked.
Anything else to do? other than doing another clean install and copying files, applications, etc. one by one? (which might not fix anything)
Thanks so much for any help.

I don't have any good solutions as it seem you have tried all the advised repairs and resets. If it were me I would wipe the HDD clean and install 10.5 or 10.6 depending on the installation disks you possess. If the problem is resolved then upgrade to 10.7 or 10.8 and see what happens.
I have a MacBook Pro that would not work correctly with an interim OS update no matter how I approached it. The consensus on this forum was that I was doing something wrong. I reinstalled to the pre update state and waited till the next upgrade was released. When I applied this everything was fine and has remained so. Perhaps OS X 10.8.3 will offer you some relief.
