On start up - loud pop, burning smell, dead Mac.  Help, please!

This morning when my wife tried to fire up her heretofore reliable G5, there was what she described as first a popping sound followed by the smell of something burning. The smell went away quickly, but the computer now seems to be dead. My guess after looking through the forum is the power source. But having learned the hard way about making assumptions I'd like to run it by people (this forum) who know a lot more about my Mac than I do!
Does this sound like a power source issue, and if not what else can it be? Assuming the power source is the problem, how do I determine the correct replacement? I know the computer is a G5 2.0, but I'm not sure of production date, etc. that I might need to know to get the right replacement. Finally, where is the best place to get a replacement power source, hopefully without paying more than the value of the machine?
As always, thanks in advance for any help and advice you all can give me!

OK, before we go any farther, is the flat-liner G5 liquid cooled?
Actually, specific model information would probably help. Remove the big side panel and look at the tiny label at the bottom of the side of the computer. That will have, among other things, the serial number and some information as to the configuration of the computer when shipped. Using the serial number, you can get more specific information on the unit at
http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html
(It also appears that the first three digits in the serial number conform to the year and week of production. (310 means tenth week of 2003, for instance).
Usually, a popping sound followed by a burning smell means a capacitor. Those who have experienced such over the years recognize the smell of cooked electrolyte, as opposed to the smell of roasted magnet-wire varnish that accompanies a transformer failure.
While the power supply is the most-likely culprit, it could be a cap on the logic board or a PCI or video card. The good news is that such failures are usually easy to spot by visual inspection. That being said, not all capacitors are visible, like, for instance, everything in the power supply assembly.
While it would probably be relatively easy for an experienced person to diagnose, it probably is not something for the inexperienced to tackle.

  • Premiere Pro CC audio pops then cuts out. HELP PLEASE.

    Driving me nuts...
Read all the forums. Tried reinstalling, deleting .cfs files, changing audio inputs, everything.
What is happening is that when I play back, the audio will "pop" (like feedback, loud, distorted, sounds like its hurting my speakers) then just not play anything. Levels monitor will be firing away, waveforms are there. Matching back to source monitor does nothing. Totally silent.
When I quit I hear another pop as the program exits.
The rest of the computer has sound functions (iTunes, internet, everything)
    Anyone?
Macbook pro 2011 - 10.8 - 16 gigs of ram - playing off secondary internal SSD drive. 4 tracks of sync sound. Thanks.
PS - just noticed a little warning triangle at the bottom right of the program that says "Audio Dropout Detected at 1:11.442 in Adobe Player" - no idea what the hell that means.
PSS - I have a feeling its because of the video. I'm editing RED (4k) - when the video is just on one track its no problem, but as soon as I put it above another clip, then it pops and cuts out.

I dropped 8K on a new mac pro, thinking, foolishly, to just throw some computing power at it...
My friends, Adobe just hates macs.
Both my D700 GPUs are kinda useless to Premiere. nVidia won and I guess Adobe could give two sh*ts about anyone on a new mac. I was hoping to go to premiere after Apple decided to drop FCP. What's amazing, as a commercial editor in NYC, EVERYONE was either on FCP or Avid (much more FCP) so there was lots of business to pick up... but the more I talk to people, and stories like this get shared, the more people are moving over to Avid, even FCPX if you can stomach it. Such a shame because AE, PS and the rest should work so nicely together... they just couldn't make it easy for non nVidia people or mac people.
I've tried contacting them (I'm even on their customer review panel) but no one seems to be able to patch this up. I've done 2 clean installs on my new mac, because I've gotten to the point that every premiere freezes, its a restart. Unreal. Been editing for 10 years and never had problems like this... even when we started putting Avid on a mac.
Failed and quite pissed. Not for nothing Adobe, if you're listening, I've got a real mind to use every piece of my social media platform to bring this to your attention - this program has wasted so much of my time (and money, jeebus) that it's almost immoral what's been going on.

    Thanks for your question.
My system has all of the updates and drivers. The problem stated when I upgraded iTunes.
Are you suggesting that because of that, I need to upgrade to Windows XP?
Many people are having the same problem as I, and they already have Windows XP....so I doubt that is the problem.
    My question is:
Where can I find an older revision of iTunes? At least then we could use our burners until apple fixes this bug, and then upgrade.
    Thanks again,

  • Unable to start photoshop CC 2014. Error 0xC0000076. Help please?

I downloaded photoshop CC 2014 but when I start the application. A dialog saying, "This application was unable to start correctly. Error 0xC0000076." I am using Window 7. Anyone has the same problem? Anyone has a solution too?

After spending half a day on Adobe forum and Adobe's online support chat, no solution was found. Finally figured it on my own. I went to Microsoft site and downloaded the Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 Update 4 for x86 and x64. When the download is complete, click on the exe file. It will ask you whether you want to repair or uninstall. Click on repair.
After the repair, Photoshop CC 2014 starts normal. Hope this will work for you as well.

  • When I boot up my macbook pro, it takes forever to start and I got grey screen...Help Please.

Just a minute ago I tried to boot up my macbook pro...normally the grey screen pops up with the whirring wheel, and then my Lion log-in screen comes up and all is well.  This time, however, the whirring wheel spun forever on the grey apple screen. Then the wheel stopped and it went to a solid grey screen with apple...and nothing for about 10-15 seconds.  Eventually it came up. BTW, this was the 2nd time I tried to boot because the first time, the grey screen with the whirring wheel stayed up for several minutes so I rebooted.
Anyone know what might be wrong? Thanks so much for your input!

  • G5 DVD burner error message? Help please?

I get this error message when I try burning a 1gb quicktime movie to dvd on my pre installed standard burner. Thanks in advance
the link below is a screenshot of the error
    http://www.darkstargraphics.com/dvd_message.gif
Im at a loss and ready to by another
below is the dvd burner profile
    PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D:

The error "internal target failure" appears on PCs using this drive as well, so it appears that it's not a Toast specific error.
However, in my browsing, no one seemed to be able to tell if it was a true hardware failure of the drive, or if it was caused by poor quality media.
I'd try other brands of media and a lens cleaner before flashing the firmware. And, if you do decide to flash the firmware, the current, official firmware for that drive is here. The link in MLCinma's post contains hacked (region free) firmware and is outdated in any event.
Let us know what brand of media you're using and what speed you're burning at.
The DVR-106D has had lots of reports of failures, so it could very well be the drive. At least a replacement DVR-111D will only cost you about $40 - $50.

  • Audio Encoding & Ken Burns Problems Persist - More Help Please.

My previous thread (10/27): Encoding Audio in iDVD for 41 hours. Is there any hope?
--72min iMovie, many high res photos, iTunes music, voiceovers, sound effects (20.9G)
    Since then:
I reimported Music Store songs from CD and tried iMovie to iDVD again , menu took 50min, video encoding took 4.5hrs, audio encoding went 12 hours till I force quit. (Should I have waited longer?)
I then was able to create a Quicktime Movie (Full Quality) in 36hrs, but the Ken Burns photos were so horrific (shimmering) that I decided to try creating a Disk Image. Is there any chance the results will be better? (Burn w/Toast6)
I also tried exporting iMovie to my JVC GR-DVP3 video camera. Only got colored checkerboard patterns.
If the Disk Image approach doesn't work, I'll be back at square one. Anything else I might try?

Wow, this sounds like a long time. Is this DV? Or
    H.264?
The extension is .dv What is H.264
Remember that iDVD will create standard resolution
video, even if you are feeding it HD material. So
use Export> Quicktime> Full Quality DV.
    I did.
The shimmering might improve once it is burned to
disk, but it might not. I also find it is different
on different players. PhotoToMovie does a better job
    than iMovie/iPhoto of avoiding shimmers.
I heard that, but it took me 2 weeks to make my movie and at present I can't bear the thought of redoing all my KB photos.
I also tried exporting iMovie to my JVC GR-DVP3
video camera. Only got colored checkerboard
    patterns
Check the iMovie forum for this one, but it sure
seems that something must not be hooked up right.
    Was it in VCR mode?
I have a post on the iMovie forum, iMovie recognized the camera and it recorded, but all I got was sporadic patterns. The manual shows DV to DV operations but no computer to DV. Maybe my camera isn't compatable.

  • Iphone 5 has started powering down after upgrade to 7.02, help please.

My iPhone 5 started powering down after the 7.02 upgrade I did almost a week ago (3 times).  I realize now that it starts after I see a message notification on the home screen and click on the slider to enter my passcode and reply to the message.
I never get the chance to enter my passcode and the phone turns itself off. The only way I can bring it back is to connect it to my Mac and launch iTunes.  Then it reboots itself and behaves normally for 2 days.
    Any ideas are appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Burning coasters.. Help please

Help, just got a new g5, trying to burn a dvd from imovie.
first, it encoded with no sound. Then, afer re encoding, everything is fine in preview, but no data on the burned product. I am not getting any error msgs. I am using best performance, everthing looks normal. any help would be appreciated.

To add to the other suggestions here:
Was your camcorder set to 16-bit audio recording?
While in iMovie HD, did you use the iDVD pane and Send to iDVD button? Did that open a new iDVD project option? Did you customize your iDVD project? Then click on the Burn icon?
    You can create a disk image and then burn to a DVD-R. Don't use DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW.
    File/Save As Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
b Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD 5 project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

Hi! If somebody can help me. Two days ago mi imac went dead. When I press the botton power on, she responds with a deep beep and does not turn on. The panel is black and the fan is working but everything is dead.

    Hi Harvard:
You could try one other thing and reset the PRAM (look for a knowledge base article).
If that will not work, you have a hardware problem that needs to be diagnosed at either an Apple store or an Apple certified technician.

  • PE3 crashes when I click "burn dvd". Any help, please?

Hello. My PE3 works just fine, except for one problem, that has plagued me for some time. When I finish editing, then complete the menu (title) page, I click "burn dvd". Invariably, PE closes. When I re-open the project and redo the menu- the forced closure didn't save the menu- it works fine, every time. I tried saving the project and re-opening before burning, but it doesn't seem to help. I'm running XP, Service Pack 3, with 2.80 GHz and 1 Gig of ram. Any help would be appreciated.

  • HDV file - need to burn to Blu-ray, help please

I have a 75 minute 1080 HDV50i video file which I need to burn it to Blu-ray for a screening in the US. Can anybody suggest the best way of doing this? Do I need to convert it before burning? And what is the best way to burn to Blu-ray? I have an LG Blu-ray burner.

There are probably simpler ways of doing this but this should work.  When your edit is done, duplicate your sequence, open the sequence settings for the duplicate and change the codec (or compressor) to prores 422.
Export this sequence with current settings.  Open the resulting file in cinema tools and "conform" to 23.98 fps.  (or the closest frame rate to that - some applications just give you a choice of a frame rate close to that).  Bring this file into compressor or fcp and you should be able to make a blu-ray that is compatible with US players.  All blurays in the US (and all US dvd players) can play 23.98 material as most feature films are shot at 24 frames per second and the transfer to video/digital usually involves slowing the film down slightly (just as most feature films in Europe are sped up slightly to 25 fps)
If there's a more straightforward method available, hopefully someone else will speak up.  I've never done this but it should work.    As always, I'd recommend making sure your end user tests the disk before the big showing.
