On start up my screen is black!

When I start my computer up in the morning everything else starts normally. First the light comes on on the front of the computer and on the bottom of the monitor, then the start up tone rings and the computer is fully running. But my monitor is black and I do not get the apple picture or nothing on the screen.
I thought my monitor was going out, but we have another work station the same and I switched the monitors (same 27" cinema screen as mine). I can actually use the other computer and network into my computer and fully use everything on my computer.
But my monitor is black (no display)!!
I have contacted MAC and have reset the PMU button many times and sometimes this works, but most of the time it does not.
I just keep restarting the computer and finally it will start up normally with the display and everything.
I am very confused about this, Please if anyone knows anything else I can do??
Bob

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It sounds like your graphics card is acting up...
If you have another G5 around (it seems like you might), you can swap graphics cards and see if that fixes it. The graphics card is a tall, probably blue card that fits in a slot on your motherboard. Here is a manual for replacing the graphics card. I'm not sure if it applies directly to your model G5, but it should basically be the same thing. Just copy and paste the link into the address bar and it should automatically download.

  • IMac starts with fan, screen stays black

When attempting to start my iMac G5 (Ambient Light Sensor), fans come on but screen stays black. A couple minutes later, the fans rev up and run very quickly and loudly. This started happening when:
    1. One day the screen showed a green question mark with a message indicating that the computer needed to be restarted in a box
    2. Green lines were all across the screen
    3. I forced it to shut down by holding down the power button
    4. When I attempted to start it back up the fans started but the screen stayed black
    5. After a couple of minutes, the fans revved up
This has been happening ever since. One time the computer started to the desktop but everything was frozen. I have reset the PMU, checked the diagnostic LEDs, reset the PRAM-basically everything suggested. Can anyone help? Thanks!

  • Laptop starts up but screen is black(doesn't happen all the time) PLEASE HELP

I own a Toshiba Satellite L505-S5966. It's 4 years old and for the most part I haven't had any problems up until recently. The first problem was it started to say "battery not detected" and saying my battery was in poor health and to replace it. Well I did replace it but it still continues to say not detected, but that is the least of my worries. I will say my AC adapter isn't the original as I had to replace that about 2 years ago.
One day while using my laptop, the screen just went completely black. I turned it off and tried to turn it on and nothing. Looked up some stuff on Google which said to clean out the dust, which I did. I also took the battery out and held down the power for 60 seconds. Well after doing that it seemed to work fine until the screen went black again. I did it again and it seemed to work. But sometimes when I turn the computer off, and try to turn it on, I can here it come on but screen stays black. If I wait a while it will work though.
Well it keeps doing this on and off. Other issues I have had is 2 times a blue screen came up. Once it was too quick to read but another I did have a chance to read it and it said something about "APC_INDEX_MISMATCH." Also about 2-3 time I've gotten a screen that said "Interactive Services Detection- The program is no longer requesting attention...." while online but I can always hit "return now" and everything is good. And then recently when I went to turn my laptop on a screen came up saying "Windows loading screen" but it froze up and never loaded anything so I had to hit the power button to restart.
I know it's not good to hit the power button to restart but it's the only way I can get it to turn off because whenever the screen is black or on the blue screen, the keyboard doesn't work at all. I would like to mention sometimes I have to restart because the keyboard will freeze up and nothing will work. The keyboard is brand new, I just recently replaced it but I know I installed it correctly. Everything else is also correctly in place as well.
I've ran anti-virus and malware scanners both in safe mode and not. Everything says it's good and shows no viruses or anything. I also did a memory diagnostics and it too came back good. I didn once mess with the toshiba diagnostics and it said my harddrive failed but I read on Google that the Toshiba diagnostics tool isn't reliable and many get a harddrive failure when it's not the case.
I would really like to know what could be wrong with my laptop. I haven't took it anywhere to be looked at because I don't want to pay $50 to find out it will cost $300 to fix. I'd much rather see if I can find out what's wrong online before having to take it anywhere.

I have a L675d-s7100 that lost a harddrive. Since it crashed I had no restore. So blew 40 bucks on disc from toshiba.
New Drive installed. disc get here. reset to day via disc. Started up ran good for about 3 days. BLUE screen.... reboot all was good. Then it started to happen more often..  Now about a Month later. The display will just go black. you have to let it set hours with battery out and power cord off. reboot all is good. NOW display won't come on. hit power it clicks and fan comes on and nothing.  Hooked up to ext  did the FN F5 and still nothing. I put the olg drive back in. it would at least light the screen. Nothing..  Anybody have any ideas???
    Thanks all...

In the future if you could, just start your own thread just to make things easier to keep track of.  If you did and didn't get a reply (wait at least a few days), then you can bump so it goes back to the top.  OK, sermon over
When you get a blue screen, what was the error message.  One of the first things I do when I get a computer is go into the settings and disable the restart on system failure so it doesn't go into a boot loop and I can read the error message.  I don't know why that is set that way on default.
If you hooked up the computer to an external display and still not getting anything, then it suggests its not a bad display.
Can you get into the bios?  Can you access the recovery partition?  If you have another working computer available, can you connect your new and/or old drive and do a diagnostics on to see if there are any errors?  Besides the new hard drive, have you done anything else to the computer like upgrade ram, etc?  You can also try and reseat the ram.
If you can get to the recovery partition, you can try a system repair.  Of course this will only work if the problem is software.  If it is a hardware issue, you have to try and isolate it (i.e., drive, ram, battery, etc.).

XFX Radeon HD 5770 = PC only card, compatibility is not a guarantee
You realize there is EFI type firmware that makes a Mac a Mac? and PC even with "UEFI" don't require or use graphic cards, hence Apple vs PC
you know by going to Apple Store or a vendor like OWC or that says "Mac Pro" Compatible - you can find Apple hardware on Amazon for instance.
Or you buy from a vendor like MacVidCards that deals with GeForce cards (mostly if not exclusively) FOR Mac Pro.
And there are different options for 2008 vs older which is why it is important when you have lack of clarity and have one thread being thread-hijacked in two.

  • My MacBook Pro will not start up and has a black screen

ON start up I get the start up chimes and a black screen. The keyboard lights up. It is a 15 inch, 2013 laptop running the latest Yosemite OS. I have tried holding down various  keys like shift, space bar, option with no fix. I have unplugged all external devices. Any ideas? Thanks, Mark

This didn't help. I was restarting about 16 times and the screen came alive and it worked for several days. I was editing photos in aperture (last time I was watching a video on Facebook ) and the screen froze. After several minutes I forced a hard restart and the screen is again black. I tried multiple restarts, unplugged all the hard drives, tried multiple restarts, tried resetting pram and smc with no return of the screen. On a restart the chime occurs like a normal start but the screen is black. The keyboard lights up, and it acts like the start up screen is waiting for an input but I can't get it to take my password

  • My screen goes black and computer freezes.  I know this is a software based problem.  Any suggestions?

About a month ago I installed an Intego software package on my computer.  After it was installed my computer began to randomly freeze.  The freezing would start with the screen going black and then fans spinning up.  Closing the screen didn't help.  Only rebooting did.  I took my Macbook to a repair service and they said that the hardware was perfectly fine.  They recommended a full wipe and reinstall.  I have since uninstalled Intego and for about a week my computer seemed fine.  Since then, however it has started acting up again.  I'm thinking about doing the wipe and reinstall of ML but am hesistant.  Any suggestions what I can do to avoid that?

    Hello nattygrimm,
I was looking into the issue you are describing and found a great resource to try and fix the issue without having to re install the OS. It is an article called Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1199.
    I recommend starting here:
The first and easiest test to try is to see if the issue affects a different user account on your Mac. Each user account has customized preferences and other items stored in its home directory. You'll first need to create an additional user if one does not already exist (follow steps a-h below). Then, log out of the current user and test the issue in the new user account.
If this resolves the issue, there may be an issue with a file in the home directory of the original user account.
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Accounts (or choose Users if using Mac OS X v10.2 or earlier).
Click "+" (or click New User if using Mac OS X v10.2 or earlier).
Give the new user a name and short name.
Mac OS X v10.3 or earlier only: Click the Password tab, and give the user a password.
Mac OS X v10.3 or earlier only: Click Security.
Select the checkbox for "Allow user to administer this computer". This makes the user account an administrator.
Click OK, or quit System Preferences.
Work your way down the article as needed.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • Computer boots but screen in black 17" Mac Book Pro

When I start up my Mac Book Pro 17" I hear the sound of start-up but don't see anything at all.  I hear the Skype program start but the screen remains black.  If I try to access the  laptop from the main computer wirelessly, I can see the desktop of the laptop but can't open any files - just can see folders.  Have tried to send an email with an attachment, but the attached file appear momentarily in the email message and then disappears.  Suggestions?

If you have a late 2007 or early 2008 pre-unibody mac, you may have this problem:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2377
If you think this could be the problem, the Apple Store has a special test they can run to confirm it. If this is the problem, the repair will be done at no cost to you.
If you have a different Mac, post back with what it is.
    Good luck!

  • Computer won't start up after recent version of mountain lion.  My power Mac was running extmely slow this morning, so i shut down to restart.  As it is starting the screen goes black, says something about debugging with the word panic in parentheses. was

I upgraded to latest version of mountain lion yesterday, this morning my power Mac was running extremely slowly (while typing, had to wait a second or two for words to appear), I shut down to see if problem would clear up.  When starting up, screen went black with programming jargon, something about debugging with the word panic in parentheses.  Screen then goes back to gray, says Mac encountered a problem and has to restart once I push a key.  Apple logo comes on gray screen, icon keeps circling and nothing happens.  This has happened three times in a row after shutting down and trying to restart.  Any thoughts?

When verifying disk, said could not repair disk, back up as many files as possible then re format disk.  Computer now doing Internet recovery. Should I. Do the following in this order
1 restore from back up on time machine
    2 re install osx
These are the options coming up on osx utilities window

I am assuming the phone was working prior to you installing IOS 6? Did you use itunes to install IOS 6 or just run from the phone?
When I tried to do the Over The Air update to IOS6 on my iPhone 4, it errored out and I had to connect it to iTunes and select "Restore" from the summary screen after iTunes finds the phone is connected. If this works for you, it will go through a couple of reboots that take a few minutes to complete. It should then give you the option to start with a fresh new phone or to use one of your previous backups to load your contacts and other information, provided you have backed up the phone previously.
I hope this helps you my friend!

  • Right side of start up screen is black and graphics flicker.....help!

For the last 2-3 months whenever I turn on my macbook (Mid 2007 white 13in model) the right 3 inches of the screen are black and the log in screen is shifted to the left 1/3 of the screen. These graphics flicker constantly. If I log in my computer stays like that.....black on the right and flickering graphics on the left. I usually have to power off and on around 10 or so times to get it to boot normally. Once it is running normal....it stays like that until I turn it off and back on. When I put it to sleep and back on it never has a problem, only from power off to power on. The screen and graphics are working perfectly except on startup.
Anybody have an idea of what it could be or how to fix it?
I was running snow leopard when this first started. About 1 month ago my HDD crashed so I replaced it and now am running Tiger again as I haven't had time to upgrade the OS yet.

Also- When my computer starts up normally it has a grayish/light blue screen with an apple on it for 2-3 seconds and then the log in screen appears.
However, when it is messed up the screen stays black for 5 seconds and then the log in screen appears distorted on the left side of the screen and the right side stays black.
Both times I hear the initial "ding"
