On startup my G4 "Connect to file server "G5 mac" as...

I have switched off all the extensions on the G4 but when it loads the desktop it opens the window "On startup my G4 "Connect to file server "G5 mac" as..." It won't let me type any login so I can't remove it or connect to the G5.
How do I stop this appearing?

My G5 (OS 10.3.9) decided to do this today too. I can't launch the Finder without it wanting to connect to another machine in the office, and the Finder locks up as soon as it displays the Connect to file server dialog.
I have SSHed in and removed the com.apple.finder.plist file but that didn't help. The only thing I can do is boot with the ethernet cable disconnected.
I am anxious to know how to stop this.

  • Mac10.x client can't connect to File Server on Windows2008 Failover Cluster

Installation of a cluster was made according to the document "Failover Cluster Step-by-Step Guide: Configuring a Two-Node File Server Failover Cluster " http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731844.aspx.
My Mac OS X 10.5.2 and Mac OS X 10.4.11 clients be able to connect to a non-cluster file server on a Windows 2008 (the File Services role) and also to old file cluster on a Windows 2003.
Why Mac clients can't connect to Windows 2008 Failover Cluster?

Are you running a firewall on the Macs. If yes does it work with out the firewall? If it works with out the firewall that means you will have to create a custom ipf rule which includes the both the physical an virtual IP addresses of your cluster.

  • Connection to file server slow and unreliable after upgrading to Leopard

I have a client with a G5 PowerMac (3 GB memory) who has been connecting reliably to a network file server (Windows based) at her company for years. Upon upgrading to Leopard the connections is slower. Or, rather, opening the root level directory is fast. The second level folder is fast. The third level is fast. Beyond that she gets the spinning cursor and it can take a long time to open, even if there are only a couple files inside. Also, navigating back to the first level I see a spinning cursor and "Connecting..." as though the Mac had lost connection with the file server simply by opening the volume. Sometimes she has to Force Quit the Finder (which reports "not responding". Weird. Any ideas out there?

    Hi Greg,
It was my second visit to this company, and it was for something else that I was focussed on. I don't know what kind of server they are running. It's a PC house running Exchange servers so it's probably some kind of Microsoft system. If the problem persists I'l get more info next week when they reopen after the holiday.

    Anybody an answer?

Have you used Server Admin.app to verify that the AFP port (TCP 548) is open on your AFP file server, as well as also opening the other ports that the client systems are using on your server?  If you're using CIFS/SMB or other file-serving protocols, you'll want to verify the corresponding ports are open, too.

  • Simple network: Windows 7 file server & several Macs and Linux machines- SAMBA bombing out?

Hi guys, i know this is really more of a windows support question, but here goes:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit acting as a file server, turned off all the usual MS authentication stuff so Macs and Linux systems connect with password without issues..
except when i start copying certain files/file types/names to the system, it will break the network connection, then refuse any more connections, all macs and linux machines on the network are booted, from the PC however i can still access the Macs shares volumes.. (the macs still see the windows machine & pinging is still there, but if i try to connect i get 'check the name/ip address' error
im no expert, but its as if the Samba service on the windows machine gets killed and im not sure what to do to get it to re-connect other then restarting the system, but as the system is also a terminal server users always have apps/documents open and its 'never a good time' to do it..
if there was an alternate Samba to install, or a buffer patch, or even a 'goto this service, stop and restart' etc.
Trying to get help from the 'windows' community comes down to 'well your on a mac what do expect etc etc' *sigh*
    any help is appreciated
    Richard

Hi, just thought id update my finding regarding this, and it maybe directly affected by my only system, but in case anyone else has this issue?
I thought it may be due to the file name thats causing the lockups, but I found while trying to backup my collection of install images and updates that sure enough a simple named file 'osx10.6.3.DMG' going to the server, 850MB in it stalls and fails, now im not able to connect.
but form the PC, without changing the name or location etc, i copied the SAME from the Macs hard drive through to the windows system, all 5.7GB.
so it is something to do with my windows 7 system, but maybe more related to the size of the file then the name or non-standard characters as first thought.
as suggested by Grant above i will check on the server boards as well.
    thanks

  • I am trying to move my Elements 9 catalog and files from Windows 7 to Mac OSX Yosemite and can't connect the files on the Mac.

When I try to connect the files to the catalog on the Mac, many (~9000 out of ~12000) files show as can not reconnect. Elements finds "similar" files (actually the files I want) but says they are not the same file. I noticed that many of them have the time parameter different in the file compared to the catalog. If I go ahead and say reconnect anyway, I get another error indicating the the data has been changed by two different sources. If offers the choice of overwriting the file data with info from the catalog (which loses the EXIF data in the file) or says leave the file alone (which loses the keyword metadata from the catalog). Is there any way to get Elements to connect all of these files while retaining all of the EXIF and the keyword metadata without having to re-edit or re-import each of these files? My ultimate aim is to then move all of these photos into the current version of Lightroom on the Mac.

You won't like this response, but there is no way to simply move any Adobe software installation from one system to another. In part, this has to do with the registration/activation infrastructure that Adobe uses. FWIW, Adobe isn't the only software vendor for which you can't simply move software from one system to another via various migration tools.
You must totally uninstall from the first system including product deactivation and then install on the new system and reactivate.
In terms of “fixing” your current system, I would recommend totally uninstalling the software (and deactivating in the process), reboot, and then reinstall from scratch.

  • Run HTTP File Server on Mac OSX Lion Server?

    Hello!
I have a Mac Mini running Mac OS X Lion Server.
I would like to be able to host a Web Server that runs within the built in Apache server that allows the transfer of files from Client to Mac Mini HD and vice versa using authentication from Open Directory.
My inspiration is HTTP File Server, or HFS (no, not the Disk Format). This, however, is a Windows Program. It allows a HTTP platform to upload and download files from the HD of the machine it is running from. It comes as a nifty .exe that has everything you need. I'd like something similar but to run on the Mac Server.
Note, the upload and download cannot be done over FTP. It must be using HTTP like HFS does.
At the very least, I'd like a HTTP (Port 80) Web Server that runs within Apache that allows upload and download to the HD.
And at best, authentication using the built in Open Directory credentials. And to make even more secure, HTTPS or SSL.
So it's like iCloud or iWork.com but using my own disk space and credentials.
    Predicted End Product:
    User visits https://192.168.x.x or https://MyDNSName.dns.com
Greeted with Home Screen (.html or .php)
    Clicks login
Has a nice login window to use (probably have to be .php to keep simple)
Logs in using same credentials as they would to logon to Mac Mini locally
Greeted with view of their files in their Directory, e.g.: /Library/Server/Web/HFS/User1 or /Library/Server/Web/HFS/User2, etc
Can choose to download present files
    Or upload. Click Upload
Upload window appears. Selects file on Client machine.
Over HTTP, file is uploaded to Host Machine to /Library/Server/Web/HFS/User1
What I'd like to know is what is the easiest way of going about this? Some kind of CMS like Wordpress or software like HFS?
    Many thanks,
    Clark

I'm a little confused here... what's the requirement for HTTP based transfers vs. traditional file sharing protocols such as AFP?
Secondly, how does 'HFS' differ from any other HTTP form-based uploader? Any web CGI or scripting system such as PHP or Perl could easily present an upload form.
Have you considered WebDAV, which is designed as s file transfer protocol over HTTP?
It integrates at the Finder level, meaning you can copy files by simply dragging and dropping file (and folder) icons in the desktop, just like on a local drive. It's part of the standard Mac OS X Apache installation, too.

  • Cannot save files to Windows server 2003 file server from MAC

    Hi,
We have few MAC users and others mostly windows based users. Problem now is MAC users cannot save any files to the file server. I had the issues to save in the portable hard drive then i format the HDD to fat 32 and now i can save, But the file server cannot
    be done like that.
What i can do to save the files to file server? please advice me
    thanks

I cannot attach another NAS as CEO need to save files to all the folders which is there in the file server already,
You can share the folder and map a drive across the network to access the shared folder on the file server. Shared folders formatted NTFS do not affect network access. You would do that by using the SMB. Here's how:

What OS version is the server? Is it a DC? You may need to reduce security on the server to allow Macs to access the server. Here's more info:

  • Locked files using a Windows 2003 File Server with Mac 10.6 clients running CS5

We migrated 40 Mac users from OS X 10.5/CS3 to OS X 10.6/CS5 back in November. Our InDesign files are kept on a Windows 2003 file server.
We have had fairly constant complaints of InDesign and Photoshop files being reported as locked when users try to save their work back to the server. This did not occur as frequently with CS3.
Has anyone else had this issue?

I'd suggest starting with iFelix's Sharing files between a Windows XP PC and a Mac running OS 10.4.x

  • When connecting to file server via smb shows no space available! Help!

We are running an XSERVE with Mac OS X 10.5.5 and have multiple clients that connect to it (mac and windows).
For some reason yesterday one of the clients (10.4.11) when connects to the file share using the smb protocol shows up with 0kb available and he is not able to copy any files. Every other computer shows 4TB available. When I connect to the share on his machine using my credentials I get the same problem. However, when I connect using his credentials on my machine it shows up correctly with 4TB free. Also, when he connects via AFP it shows the full 4TB. Any idea what could be causing this?
(the reason he connects via smb is because for some reason the people on 10.4.11 experience very slow AFP transfers sometimes. If anybody knows whats causing this that would help too hehe) Thanks in advance to anyone that takes the time to help me.

If it is an identical machine, put the machine that works fine into target disk mode and boot the machine that is having issues from the other machines drive. That will eliminate most hardware issues.
My guess is it is a system file or a settings file in the users library. I have fixed several issues like this on computers that were running 10.4 I believe and think they were upgraded from 10.3 by someone else. The issue had something to do with permissions and files.
    Try some of the following:
    - create a new user on the computer and see if that user works. if so, it's something in the user folder (most likely User/username/Library/). If not, then it is something outside the user folder.
    Try
    - running a combo Update on the machine
    - run disk utility file and permissions on the drive
    - Backup the user folder and clone the drive that works onto this drive, and move the user folder over. (assuming you know how to do that, it is easy)
REGARDING Slow AFP - having the same issue with 10.4.11 Server. Most clients are Leopard. Intermittent, so hard to diagnose. Tried several solutions on this wait and see issue.

So essentially I want to create a .wcx file, but can't follow

  • SLOW workstation connection with file server

I have an eMac running Server 10.3 with two firewire disk connected directly into the eMac to function as file servers. I have several diff. Macs connected to the file sharing server and have for six months. They all run 10.4.11 and all connect with the GO command and used to navigate various files and folders throughout the main PUBLIC folder. Suddenly Monday morning 2 workstations connect and navigate folders without problems and 3 other workstations just spin the beach ball when you try to go past first or second folder.
ALL machines connect without major problem (maybe a tad slower). I have looked at folders (as I can get to them) and view optioned turned off "calc all sizes". It was on in some of the windows and off in some but none were suddenly turned on anyway.
While beach ball spins I can open Safari, mail and can surf web, get mail, etc. no problem. I can even click on top of the one of the server folder windows and move it around on my desktop. When I let go and move curser it turns into beach ball.
Also, when I finally get fed up and go to Relaunch on the Finder in the dock, at the top "grayed out" it says application not responding?? Don't know what application it is referencing? I usually have to hit the Relaunch command twice. First time nothing happens, the second time it will immediately relaunch the Finder.

Had to get my off-site "Mac Expert" to delete some kind of p.list file or files that get corrupted by some server file (InDesign or Photoshop or Illustrator most likely) on my server. Don't know which one and it reappeared some time later and he had to do it again, but he could connect remotely and clear/delete the file. Has to be done from the command line so it is out of my league. Still waiting to see if we can find the corrupted file.
