On startup, what does 3 short beeps, 3 long beeps, 3 short beeps, and a black screen mean?

On startup, I hear 3 short beeps followed by 3 long beeps followed by 3 short beeps, then nothing. Screen remains black the whole time. Tried to boot holding down option key - nothing. 2010 MacBookPro running Snow Leopard. Any suggestions?

so there's this little icon at the top right corner of my iTouch 32GB (next to the battery icon) that's driving me crazy.
can anyone tell me what it means, and how to get rid of it?
    much appreciated

It is the Orientation lock.  To disable it or turn it off, double click your Home button and swipe your finger to the right on the Multitasking Bar.  Here you'll see the Orientation lock.  Tap it once to turn it off.

  • POST beep sequence: 3 short, 3 long, 3 short

This is a business computer replacement, so I need it fixed (or never broken in the first place).
    This all happened today.
I purchased, unpacked, setup, and performed updates.
The computer had random screen artifacts and was unresponsive.
Questionable "Power icon" alerting me it needs to shut down.
Upon boot, 9 beeps are heard: 3 short, 3 long, 3 short
I'm not impressed with windows pcs, but Apple shouldn't push updates if they're not fully tested.
I don't know which OS, the computer never gave me a chance to look : /
I'm assuming Snow Leopard since I just bought it.
    Thanks.

Thanks Bob, and you're right, 10.6.2 right on the box!
Apple Support is calling me in the morning, but if I get restless, can you please send me a guide? I still don't think it's acceptable to have this issue. This is really a computer for my parents business, which they bought at my recommendation. They need it ASAP and are already ****** that it isn't working on the first day. I'm just weary of a static discharge, which would place the blame on Apple to me. Which I'd rather not have.
Does anyone know what the other 2 sets refer to?

  • 3 short, 3 long, 3 short

Online with a popular realtor site and moved cursor quickly and froze. Shut down and came back later to the black screen with the subject tones and then silence.
Any more info on 3 short, 3 long, 3 short??

Sure, RAM can go bad. If it's only 4 months old you're covered by the 1 year warranty so don't worry about just make an appointment and bring it in. If you have an Apple Store in your general area take it there. BTW I would also look into investing in AppleCare to protect your investment, it extends the warranty to 3 full years and also gives you 3 years of telephone support too. You don't have to get it from Apple directly, you can easily get it at discounted prices by buying from an authorized reseller like Amazon or LA Computer Company.

  • What does the "i" in "iPod" stand for and why is lowercase?

What does the "i" in "iPod" stand for and why is it lowercase?

I dont know, I think that was pretty funny.
The i first appeared as a prefix for the iMac. As this was the first one to be equipped with the internet it's a pretty safe bet to assume that it stood for 'internet'.
After that it became a bit of a signature for apple and a kind of unofficial trademark and gets used on everything cos apple think it looks trendy.
Although to be fair the iPod does play tunes that you download using the internet, so there is a link i suppose.
I think this is right but will no doubt get some Mac nerd disagreeing.

  • My macbook Pro Retina is 5 months old. I have nothing but a cursor and a black screen. What gives???

I have nothing but a cursor and a black screen. It's only 5 months old! What gives here? This is my first Mac and I'll tell you, they aren't impressing me.

Did you get it fixed at the store? I have this same problem my macbook pro that I bought at the end of December. I am not impressed and very unhappy that I now need to drive to some store to fix it. I tried to get it fixed through the phone but alas it still does not work.
After spending as much money as I did for this thing that I've only had for less than three months and used maybe less than 10 times, I'm slightly upset. I need to have this working by Saturday.

What causes the iPhone 4S to shut down to a black screen when it has full power? I have cleared the open icons and it works for one day then shuts down again.

Software hiccup, glitch or maybe faulty battery. Restore iPhone with iTunes on computer. See if this helps. If still problem that you think is serious enough to fix, all iPhone 4S have full Warranty. Make Genius Reservation and take iPhone to Apple for resolution.

There's more to resolution than pixel count. Consider the pixel size on the iPhone screen in comparison to the pixel size on your forty inch HD TV.

  • 9 Beeps (3 short, 3 longer, 3 short)

I have a mid-2010 Macbook Pro and just downloaded the latest Mac OS update.  My computer will not start since downloading the latest update. My Mac will start with a black screen and 3 short beeps, 3 longer beeps, and 3 short beeps. Then a gray screen with an Apple and progress bar beneath starts to load, and then the screen goes black again and the beeping continues. Please help! I shouldn't have downloaded the latest update quite possibly.

    Morse code for SOS.
It sounds as though a firmware upgrade went badly. You will need to attempt to reload firmware from a CD that you create using another Mac. Read about it here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2213
    (text follows)
The Firmware Restoration CD can restore the firmware of an Intel-based Macintosh computer.
Note: Restoring your firmware will reset some of your computer's preferences to defaults.
You can only use this to restore the firmware after an interrupted or unsuccessful update. If your computer is already in this state, you'll need to download the software and create the CD on another Macintosh computer, or you can take your computer to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to restore your firmware. This CD can be created on either a PowerPC- or Intel-based Mac, but only works with Intel-based Macs.
Note: This CD cannot be used to return an Intel-based Macintosh computer's firmware to a previous version if a successful update has already been performed.
Download the correct Firmware Restoration CD image
You can download the software for the Firmware Restoration CD from Apple Downloads. Different computers use different versions of the Restoration CD. A table on each download page identifies which model is appropriate for which Restoration CD image. To see your Mac's model information (Model Identifier), follow these steps on the computer you will be using the CD with:
From the Apple menu, choose About this Mac.
Click the "More Info" button. This opens System Profiler.
The Model Identifier is located in the Hardware Overview, which is the first window you should see. It looks something like this: "MacBookPro 2,1".
Compare the model information to the list on the download page in order to choose the correct Restoration CD image to download for your computer.
Restoring firmware with a Firmware Restoration CD
To restore your computer's firmware, you must first create a CD using the disk image named "FirmwareRestorationCD.dmg" by following these steps:
Open Disk Utility (located at /Applications/Utilities).
Click the Burn icon or select the "Burn..." menu item from the Images menu.
Navigate to where FirmwareRestorationCD.dmg is located, and click the Burn button.
    Insert a blank recordable CD
Click the Burn button to create the Firmware Restoration CD. The files are burned to the disc.
Next, use the Firmware Restoration CD to restore your Firmware:
Make sure that the computer you are trying to restore is plugged into an AC outlet.
Turn on the computer and continue holding the Power button. The sleep LED will blink rapidly, then slowly, then rapidly (3 quick blinks, 3 slow blinks, 3 quick blinks).
On Macs that don't have a sleep LED, tones are used instead. Hold down the power button until you hear 3 long tones, then 3 short tones, then 3 long tones.
On Macs that use a tray-load optical drive, the tray will open to allow the Restoration CD to be inserted.
Insert the Firmware Restoration CD while the lights are blinking or tones sounding, then release the Power button. A long tone is played once the recovery process has started.
A progress bar appears beneath an Apple logo on a gray screen. The progress bar indicates the firmware is being updated. Do not disconnect power, shut down, or restart the computer during the update or you will need to start the restoration process again beginning with step 6.
Please let me know if this works for you. If it does not I believe a trip to the Genius Bar will be your only recourse, since it is likely the logic board has a failure that you will not be able to fix.
    Good luck.

  • Tecra S1 sends beep code - 2 short 1 long 3 short

I suspect a memory issue ...I have 256 meg pc2100 memory . I have tried switching slots and got it to boot but it froze after 2 min.
Would not restart after that only beep codes
    Can someone help me?

Hi and thanks for your contribution. I investigated the thread you attached already. Unfortunately it doesn't answer the question. The Insyde BIOS (used in Tecra S1) is different to the others posted on many web sites.
There is no mystery in the beep codes and it doesn't take a Toshiba technician to interpret them either. If that were true why are beep codes meanings available for many other BIOS types. Self-diagnositc functions are just what the name implies and (in part) eliminates the need for a diagnostic tool to plug into the computer to track down hardware problems.
Personally I think there is far greater danger of screwing up a computer by randomly replacing hardware until the thing works. If I know what the beep code means I have a pretty good chance of knowing which hardware component is not functioning correctly. I can easily judge how expensive it might be and so forth. As a reasonably intelligent person I don't need a technician to read the beep code meaning, look up the hardware price and tell that what he/she just did will cost me X amount, before the repair is even started.
For those who may speculate that the beep code might be wrong and that only a technician can tell for sure - more nonsense. A technician doesn't know any more than you or me in that respect, apart from experience of the same problems. That leads us to the next logical place and that is if these failure modes and causes are so well known, why can't customers be allowed to know them. I don't want to know how many have failed in the field, but it is helpful to know what has been going wrong. It seems very strange that the problem my Tecra has, which is apparently common, has no published cause. I don't buy the notion that for the same beep code there are multiple causes. If that were true, the beep code is not doing what it was programmed to do and I would ask for my money back.
I know that I am wasting my breath here, but I wanted to express my view. I am sure that customer loyalty is not fostered by treating them like mushrooms.

  • IMac with Startup tones issue - 3 short + 3 long + 3 short

    Hello,
I recently acquired a 24" iMac (early 2009)model from a friend; it had been working perfectly when he had it but once I transported it to my place and set it up, its not properly booting up. The problems is:
1- On startup while the screen is still off, it gives 3 short tones, 3 long, 3 short tones, and then goes silent.
2- Then it seems like its trying to access an expected media in the DVD drive.
3- After a short while, it finally starts up but with a progress bar below the Apple icon.
4- On completion of the progress bar, it shuts down and then behaviour goes back to step #1. This loops continuously till I force it to shutdown.
I haven't been able to find anything in the support area here about 3 short, 3 long, and 3 short tone sequence. The only reference is to 3 long, 3 short, 3 long tone sequence (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2538?viewlocale=en_US), or http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2372353&tstart=0.
So far I have done the following:
1- Reset the RAM modules - no effect
    2- Used the Firmware Restoration CD 1.7 & 1.8 - No effect
3- Reset PMU - no effect
4- Upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard - no effect
However, when I reset the PRAM, this is the only way for the machine to start up properly. And once it does, it works fine, but on restart/or starting after shutdown it exhibits the same behaviour.
If one of the RAM modules had done bad, I would recoken that it wouldn't be able to start up at all (as per reset PRAM technique). So what could this be?
Luckily the machine is under AppleCare but haven't had the chance to call them up (due to working hours clash). So just want to see if this issue can be user fixed or is a hardware issue which would require a visit to an Apple store (quite a bit away here in UK).
    Many thanks!

Also seems the only update available for the 9,1 imac is related to the ATI Radeon HD 4850 Video card. Do you have this card?
See here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237 and here http://support.apple.com/downloads/iMac_EFI_Firmware_Update_14
This update fixes intermittent system freeze issues for iMac computers with ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics and fixes wake-from-sleep issues in Boot Camp.
Loading the 1.7 and 1.8 firmware does not seem a wise idea.. 1.7 is for the 4,1 and 4,2 imacs, and 1.8 is for the Mac Pro (Early 2009) 4,1 and Xserve (Early 2009) 3,1
Also this symptom has been reported as linked to faulty RAM refer here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2372353&tstart=0
