Onboard Audio quality?
Hi everyone!
I got the Neo Platinum and I am using my Sony Mini System which is 240W RMS as my speakers. I am using the onboard audio which is 7.1 (correct??) The sound coming out of em are fantastic. I was wondering would it be worth picking up an audigy 2 ZS in the future, will this give me better FPS in games and better quality in general? I am skeptical because b/c my sound seems really great. I was thinkin of buying it in maybe a couple of months or so when its cheaper. Anyone got advice? Opinons? Thanks.
To answer labbatblue, I have a basic audigy 2 and yes I have tried the onboard sound and it doesn't compare to the quality of the audigy 2. The onboard sound is ok but believe me an auidgy 2 is so much more clearer. I suppose it all depends on what speakers you are using.. I am using Logitech Z680's:
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/GB/EN,crid=2,contentid=5048,detail=2
Awesome speakers for music, games and DVD's. With these there is a big difference in audio quality between onboard sound and the audigy 2.
I am now thinking of getting an Audigy 2 ZS platinum pro to improve the sound even more.

"audio quality" Audigy 2 vs. Nforce onboard
5"audio quality" Audigy 2 vs. Nforce onboardS hi everyone,
i bought myself an old Audigy 2 from Ebay a week ago, hoping i can increase my fps ingame on my old 2200+ computer.
i really felt the increase, especially in Doom 3. But today i threw out the Audigy again.
the bass from my subwoofer (teufel concept e mpe) is sooooo weak (in games and winamp) and sounds like a cheap passi've subwoofer.
i tested every single setting, hoping to get a better sound out of it, but it didn't work. the bass just feels "weak".
i'm pretty surprised, because i thought i'd get at least the same sound quality.
does anyone have experiences with that? i can't believe the onboard sound is better than the Audigy's!
i set the frequency for subwoofer to 20hz, increased the volume of the subwoofer, changed the equalizer.
but it just sounds like a passi've sub and "cheap". (sry my english isn't good enough to find fitting adjecti'ves)
can anyone help me with that? does anyone have the same problem?
thanks in advance.Meocene wrote:
If you used the auto update function you're probably already using the latest drivers. However if you didn't then definately install Dan K's pack - they're the best drivers currntly available for the Audigy 2. You'll want to uninstall the previous drivers, then do a clean up using Driver Sweeper beforehand though - Creative's drivers can be problematic
The problem with the Audigy 2 is that its analog output quality isn't especially good anymore, when compared to newer devices - even onboard. This is demonstrated when and if you swicth over to use Dolby Digital Li've.
I'm assuming the sound quality improvment I got has got to do with the fact that when using DDL, the Audigy's DACs and other analog components are skipped because the audio signal is being sent straight out, digitally, to my reciever.
The audio quality improvement I got was huge, to the extent that, eax/gaming aside, I can't actually hear the difference between an X-Fi and my Audigy anymore. Before using DDL li've the difference was obvious.
It may simply be that your nForce's analog output is of a higher quality.
Analog quality aside though, the Audigy 2 is still the better device, or at least the more capable. It really depends on whether or not you're a gamer I suppose.
If you've got a digital reciever then try the DDL pack and connect your Audigy to your reciever using the digital output.
If not, and you're not a gamer, then I'd stick with your nForce if that sounds better? < - this being advice I'd imagine you must find rather anoying.

thanks for these informations.
unfortunately i can't use DDL, because i don't own a receiver.
music is at the moment the more important thing, i'm gaming about 4 hours a week.
i'll keep the audigy though, maybe i'll rebuild an old 3000+ system i still have. (the sound THERE really sounds crappy)
thanks for all answers and your help!
EDIT: does the usual audigy 2 driver panel look like this: http://www.hartware.de/showpic.php?type=review&id=606&path=/media/reviews/606/xfi_screen_thx_big.jpg
it's a screenshot from an x-fi card.
mine looks different!

Unable to Use Onboard Audio with Nvidia GPU since Linux 3.4
I am currently stuck using linux 3.3.8-1 along with nvidia 295.49-1, because I don't know how to workaround the kernel disabling MSI for snd-hda-intel. This module is used by both the Nvidia HDMI audio and the ALC880 onboard audio. Previously, I have been able to disable HDMI audio to be able to use the onboard audio, but now I don't know what to do. I have attempted to use "options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1" when modprobing on boot, which gets rid of the "hda_intel: Disabling MSI" message but it hasn't given me a working onboard audio output.
I have also used the following command along with enable_msi=1 (found here: http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Document … HOWTO.txt) in my rc.local
echo 1 > /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000\:00\:1b.0/msi_bus
Of course, it is my assumption that the kernel disabling MSI is the cause of the problem, but it might be something else. Please let me know if any additional logs would be helpful.

Hi,
I am interested to buy MSI P965 Platinum MBO that has Realtek 883 codec. My only goal is to use it for HomeTheatre, connecting SP/DIF to an external audio reciver. Encoding of DD and DTS will happen in reciver, not on the card, so I gonna use just passthrough to it. My question is about quality of SP/DIF and is it "bit-accurate" sampling or some resampling is done on before its being transfered to ext. reciver. In term of quality level compare it with http://www.soundblaster.com/products/x-fi/technology/lastinfo/ssrc6.asp please. Thanks. If are only planning to use the SPDIF outputs, then it doesn't matter whether you are using onboard or creative soundcard. cos SPDIF only transmits raw audio data, unlike the analog outputs that transmit processed audio signal. The sound quality from SPDIF will very much depends on how your digital speakers/receiver process the audio data.
Creative soundblaster audigy and x-fi series of soundcards are "bit-accurate", so does the onboard audio on your motherboard. it will output the exact audio data as from the source, provided the output sampling frequency is set to the maximum (96khz). unlike that soundblaster live series, which freq is locked at 48khz.
Hopefully this info answers your question.

Lumia 800 disastrous audio quality
Here goes my happy honeymoon with the phone.
I was fairly happy with the phone until I tried to listen to music on it. Sound quality (no matter which headphones I use, up to Westone 3) is awful. There's no bass whatsoever, the sound is dirty, no stereo separation etc. etc.
Really, I haven't heard anything as awful in years.
And here's a confirmation. This is such an outlier among modern phones I really can't get how this passed the quality control.Keeperovod wrote:
Actually you don't use Moscow underground)) It is more than enough for everyday use for me. Sound is loud and clear so I can use high volume levels and I can't hear any details because of noise around. And I can't hear any difference in FM because of its nature. So it's more than enough for my regular use. I think that if you are audiophile you have to use some special player and not general purpose smartphone. Lumia isn't targeted for audiophiles I think. You can never expect from universal device to be good as one specialized, I think.
In any case disastrous audio quality during calls is real problem. Can you turn FM on and try to call using headphones. Is it my unique bug and should I go to service for phone replacement or not&
Let's stick to the sound problem with listening to music via the jack output here.
This issue has nothing to do with beeing audiophile. Even you hear the difference between a cheap onboard soundcard and the worse Lumia.
I use 20€ in-ears. Because of in-ears, I don't have much backround noise in trains. On this rather cheap headphones (far away from beeing audiohile, you see) I hear the lack of sound quality without comparing. Especially tracks with a lot of bass sound bad beceause of the low-cut, the review we posted above confimed.
For example, the deep pumping bass in this track, is completly flat on the lumia: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npOcINSOWrQ&hd=1
To reach a bit of enjoyment, I have to max out the Volume. Is this really necessary on a 2011 high end smarphone priced at 500€, while my N82 was fine?
I would be glad if I knew that Nokia is aware of the problem. Maybe it's a software issue. If it's a Hardware issue, then at least implement an Equailizer!
The sound is not desastrous, but simply not good enough. -
Via onboard audio or Ensonique 1371?
Which should I choose? I've been having a few audio problems, which may (or may not) have something to do with Via's onboard audio... And last time I played a CD, I heard a lot of funny little bubbling noises that definitely should not have been there.
On the other hand, the sound card that I could install - a Creative Labs Ensonique 1371, which I know to be very good - is from a gateway that's got to be at least 5 years old.
Which should I use?Gullible Jones wrote:(This is really weird though, these problems. IIRC Via's onboard audio is supported very well on Linux. :? )
it is? err... well, i keep having problems with the mixer of the card on my Asrock K7VM4 mobo... like Master and PCM can only be muted/unmuted and i need to regulate PCM volume using *the second* Via DXS switch... hmm....
well, i can live with that since i get working 5.1 over spdif and much better quality than that of the es1371. the good old ES served me well from my P200MMX up to my late P2-400. -
Hi everyone,
I have 3 M57's with onboard Soundmax sound devices that have been downgraded to Win XP Pro w/SP3 and all of them are exhibiting audio quality problems. It seems like that audio is distorted most of the time. As an example, if a wave file is played 5 times it may sound distorted 3 out of the 5 playbacks. The only way to describe the distortion is it sounds like the audio is being downsampled to 1kHz.
I've also tried using speakers, headphones, etc.
Any help would be appreciated.stmay wrote:
Well, at least it's not just me. We've got over 100 of these workstations to roll out and I can't get the audio to work either. It's the exact same problem that mlieberum is having. I've tried about every single thing I can possibly think of. Everytime I think I've got it working, all of a sudden the sounds starts distorting. Something weird that I've noticed is that if Windows Media Player is open and playing music, the audio works all the time. As soon as you close media player, the sounds starts distorting again.
I've contacted Lenovo twice and they were absolutely no help at all. I've got to have 40 of these workstations done by the second week in January so I need to figure something out. If anyone has any ideas, I'd certainly appreciate it.
Thanks,
Steve
Well since you said any ideas, the guy I helped out with his A52 sound drivers got good results from this site here

I have a 17 inch MBP.... looking to possibly purchase the MBP 15.6 Retina.....
How is the audio quality from the onboard speakers? The 17 model(s) have exceptional audio.
And in Mt. Lion is there an equalization setting to boost bass and reduce treble?
Thank you,

Added sound card, no onboard audio no more
i added an sb live value for the use of the joystick port only, not wanting to use ti as a sound card. the onboard audio of my 865pe neo2 fis2r msi 6728 no longer works. so how can i get back my onboard audio? my speakers are still plugged into the onboard. is this even posible? to use onboard audio, but use my joystick on the sb live card when playing games? or is it only one or the other? do i need to go into the bios maybe and tell it to use onboard audio? like maybe it changed cus of the new sb live value card?
ok, i hooked up my speakers to the sb live card, it's fine i guess , but is it possible to use onboard audio with joystick port only from the live card? or because i have a sound card installed now, does that totally disable onboard completely unless i removed the live card?Yep No is the Answer, Because as soon as Windows Sees that you have a PCI sound card, it will not allow the Onboard sound chips Drivers to Load upon Bootup, I cant believe that you went through the Trouble of Installing a Sound Card that has a "MIDI" port, Instead of just Getting a USB Joystick , as the New USB Joysticks are Much more Responsive and Support Many More Games, and You can Get one For Less $ then you Paid for the Soundblaster .....Sean REILLY875

What is the audio quality on an iPod Shuffle?
I have just received a free iPod shuffle. I would like to know whether the sound quality is different on all different models/varieties of iPods. I am an audiophile and quality is 1st priority. If one has music files as AAC format with highest bit rate possible, will it sound exactly the same on a Shuffle as on an iPod classic, or what about an iPod touch? Where can I find a description of the different audio quality of playback on these different size devices?
ThanksApple does not publish audio specs on the various iPods and this information is tough to come by. They all sound pretty similar, some will have slight differences from others due to the difference in chipsets used.
Personally I think my 1st Generation iPod Shuffle has slighter better bass than the 2nd Generation Shuffle, 3rd Generation is on a par with the 1st Gen, my fifth generation iPod sound cleaner than my 160GB iPod Classic and I prefer the 2nd Generation Nano sound to all of them. -

HP Slate 7 Voice Tab - Audio Quality Issue
I see drastic change in audio quality in HP Slate 7 Voice Tab after an upgrade to recent Kit Kat update. Songs and other media is not all audible , Volume through external speaker is very very less at maximum volume also.Tried with many song, HD videos but issue remains same and feels its related to new android version update on HP Slate 7 voice tab.
So would like to know is there any new update or solution for this issue.Hey @S_Thomas ,
Welcome to the HP forums.
I understand you're experiencing issues with audio quality on your Slate 7 Voice Tab after updating to KitKat.

5. Install any available system updates.
If no updates are available, or updates do not resolve the issue try the following.
Clear all cache on the tablet: Settings > Storage > Cached Data. You should have the option to erase all the cached data here.
Hard reset: While the tablet is on, press and hold the power button for 8+ seconds to force shut down. Turn the tablet back on and see if that helps.
Factory reset: Make sure you backup any important files or information first. Settings > Backup & reset > Factory data reset.

When playing audio/video on my MacBook Pro docked to Thunderbolt display the audio quality steadily worsens until it is garbled beyond understanding. I don't know if it occurs when using the MacBook undocked. It takes about an hour to become noticeable and steadily worsens. Simultaneously when the computer speaks the time this is also gargled. As the problem develops it sounds like there is a static halo around each spoken word.
Hi GeoChester,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you are experiencing some sound issues on your Mac that worsens over time. In this situation, the first troubleshooting step that I would recommend would be to reset your computer’s PRAM. To do this, please follow the instructions in the following attached article.
OS X Yosemite: Reset your computer’s PRAM

Poor Audio Quality in my new HP 15 R203TX
Hi I have just purchased HP pavillion 15 R2037TX laptop. It comes with 5th gen 5200U processor with 4gb ram, 2gb nvidia 820M graphics 1tb of hdd with DOS with realtek hd sound technology. I installed win 8.1 and accordingly installed all the drivers from the official hp website. After installing audio driver I found that DTS audio control panel was installed. My laptop is working fine except one thing I am not getting proper sound quality which i used to enjoy in my previous e038tx laptop that too came with DTS audio. The sound is not sweet or crisp rather very hazy when playing through external subwoofer and speaker. I enjoyed clear and crisp audio quality in the same speaker and sub woofer previously. Plus I can not understand why after realtek hd audio I get dts audio control panel. Because the audio vendor says its hardware is Realtek HD audio. Realtek has its own audio control panel which I do not find here. Whatever kindly help me how can i enjoy beautiful sound >? thanx in advance

Hello friend @lbrou87 I'm not hear to debate about the issue unless you are a Hp Support people (Which I think you are not). And I have explained everything in my previous replies then why are you asking absurd questions. This was my 2nd laptop after 7 years and I'm using 1st time a HP laptop. I could have gone with my previous brand laptop of DELL . I chossed Hp to try a new brand. I could have gone with purchasing DELL. If I pay a premium price for this hp model then why I'm getting a great featured laptop which gives me a low audio output. What you said in your reply HP don't want to update the technology in the drivers which make Hp customers to buy external speakers. Then what more I can say!!!... I'm really unsatisfied. The Hp support if they can't say anything then who should I go and ask. (sorry friend @lbrou87 if I'm being rude to you in this reply)
I was just trying to help. I've been through this with HP Support before with a similar issue. I though the premise of a forum was not only for HP's representatives to help, but other forum members as well. But, since you want to be rude and obnoxious to someone that only wants to help, I'm done with this thread. Wait for HP's representatives for help. Good day sir. -
When I use iSight in Skype it delivers a way better audio quality in comparison with iChat Audio/Video chat. It's not that crisp, more like a poor telephone call. I wonder if I can change it or is it just an iChat nature?
My connection speed is 1 MB.
Straming in Quicktime changed to 1.5 MB
My Output/Input settings in Sound tab seems OK.
I don't use firewall.Hi Sleeze,
I do not have Skype so I can not judge. Most of the posts I have read seem to suggest iChat Audio is better.
However Skype could have updated their app.
As long as iChat Bandwidth and Quicktime streaming setting in System Preferences are not capping your connection I can not see any other changes you can make. (unless you are "too far" from the camera). If the last is the case it may pay to adjust the volume in System Preferences > Sound >Input tab as this is the master for iChat. I am not sure if it is the same for Skype.
