    Hi edgi,
The  PCIe slots are intended for network interface cards such as a 10GbE card. However, I have not heard of anyone installing a fiber channel before.

  • Using illustrator for iOS graphics and frame animations (beginner question)

    Hey there,
Just want to get some opinions and advice.
We are developing a sidescolling 2D game and I am creating 2D graphics in illustrator, ...so far so good, at this point in time I have a few characters designed.
Now for the character poses, positions and frame by frame animations.... hmmmm.
I have been searching for examples of ways to create character movements and positions in illustrator but as of yet have not found any good examples or explainations.
Would anyone care to share (or point me to some examples) of workflows you use to create different poses and character postions using illustrator...
(eg. should I be importing my artwork into flash to use the bone tool? Or should I create each variation in illustrator by copying my character and manipulating)

Though the people I have talked to are using solely illustrator to do just that!?
Maybe the people you've talked to just haven't taken opportunity to familiarize themselves with Bones. The artwork for cartooney walking animations can be done fairly easily in a drawing program, using Blends, Transform Again etc. So in many cases it's just not a big deal either way.
What is the advantage of using just illustrator to create animations, I'm guessing that its because the drawing tools available are superior to flash?
To me, it's not so much about "superior" drawing tools in a drawing program; it's more about a more complete set of drawing tools and commands. Flash has a Bezier drawing tool that works fine, so you can draw paths with control. But creating Blends on paths is just more convenient to do right on the page, without involving a timeline, keyframes, etc. Brushes and Transform Effect make it easy to repeat a series of objects. Flash's continual on-the-fly autotracing and auto merging of overlapping unselected and ungrouped objects can be cumbersome while drawing.
See this example. Then click the Construction Notes link below it to view a 2-page PDF that shows how the majority of the artworks was accomplished with just two very simple ArtBrushes used in combination with pathBlends. That kind of stuff is often just easier/quicker to do in a drawing program, release to layers, and then copy/paste or otherwise import to Flash.
Using Blends in AI for things like this experiment can save alot of tedium and time, as compared to working only with Flash's drawing tools. (Notes here.)
Some things just can't be done with only Flash's drawing tools. Envelope distortions, for example, can be blended to create frame-by-frame shape tweens that would be difficult to do with just Flash's native tools, as in this experiment. (The animation is embedded on Page 11 of the PDF; you may have to click "Trust this host one time only" in Reader and then click the middle of the page to get it to play, depending on your OS version.)
But as a general rule whenever using a drawing program in conjunction with Flash, avoid using more than ordinary flat fills and stokes in the drawing program before importing the paths to Flash. If you want to involve grads, shadows, transparency, etc., you'll generally be better off adding those things in Flash. Such effects are not the same constructs in different programs, and will most likley become rasterized in Flash (as is the case in the last example, above).
So again, it depends on specifically what you are trying to do.

  • Onboard graphics on MSI NF980-G65

I'm looking to buy THIS motherboard but i have a question. i already have a 9800 gtx, Can the onboard graphics and my graphics card be used at the same time? like if i wanted to use 3 or 4 monitors.
    Thanks

No, sorry. With some other, weaker card - this in not what I specialise in - you could enable Hybrid SLI, which would make the onboard and discrete cards co-exist. But, this is only from the back of my head, mind you. Just thought being on-line I should bring some bad news.

  • Matching a PCIe graphics card w/ proper PCIe slot question.

    Hi all,
By all i mean Harm and Jim - the hardware wizards!   One more hardware question....
In comparing two Supermicro mb's, the X8SAX and the X8STE, i noticed that the X8SAX has two PCIe 2.0  x16 slots while the X8STE has one x8 PCIe 2.0 in a x16 slot.
So... my question is... If i'm going to use a high end graphics card like the GTX 260 or a lower end Geforce 9500 GT, buying the X8STE mb would be a mistake because both cards are x16 and putting them in the x8 using a x16 slot would degrade the speed in half - correct?

    Harm,
Of the Supermicro i7 single socket mb's, the X8STE would have been ideal with 1-x16PCIe, 3-x4PCIe and 2-PCI slots if the x16PCIe slot had 16 lanes and the mb had no graphics. Also, With the X8SAX, if you are using double wide graphic card, you are covering up a PCIe slot leaving you with ony one more on the mb.
But why use two video cards? What is the value added?
I like many editor's, I use dual monitors during the video production process so i can see Pr, Ps, Ae or Sb at the same time. I find it more productive and convenient. I have been toying with the idea of  getting a third monitor. But with this mb, it would leave me with no usable slots other than the two 64bit PCI-X slots.
Although Supermicro mb's are great, I own an older dual Xeon NLE system, they just don't any boards - currently - that satisfy me. Both boards leave you wanting a little. But I would agree with you that the X8SAX is still the better choice.
In any case, would you agree that putting an x16PCIe graphics card in the X8STE with only 8 lanes in the x16PCIe slot would have been a waste?
Just for curiosity, what Supermicro single i7 mb would you have chosen?

  • Onboard and PCI-E Graphics shows blinking black screen on 8.1

I have a homebrewed 3rd Gen Core i5 on an Intel DQ77MK motherboard which has onboard graphics. I also have an nVidia Quadro FX 3500 PCI-E graphics cards.
The Quadro has two DVI outputs connected to two monitors, I connected a third to the onboard graphics. So I have three monitors.
This worked fine with Windows 7. I go to install windows 8.1 and I turned off auto-updates and all the auto device driver junk. I installed the Intel drivers and the nVidia Drivers and three monitors working fine. I go to update to grab a package to remove
that stupid "SecureBoot isn't configured properly" watermark and I reboot to black screens with a cursor and nothing else. I reboot to the BIOS and turn off the integrated graphics and I can get back in - but I really want my triple monitors.

black screens with a cursor and nothing else.
So, if there is a cursor, it's not really "black", just blank.  But to be really clear "cursor" means an underscore at the top of the screen, or something else?  I have seen the former myself but don't really know what it means.  Also it has
only happened occasionally and I can't remember whether it shows on both of my monitors when it happens?  I think that when I have seen that I have had to unplug some other USB devices to get past that symptom.  E.g. my usual tricks with Win-P or
Ctrl-Alt-Delete or Shift-F10 etc. did nothing--no beeps and no drive light activity.
A reason that it could be important to know if the underscore appears on all monitors is that sometimes the boot seems to get confused about which monitor is primary, so if both monitors have different attributes (as mine do) then perhaps the symptom
could be understood as the wrong monitor getting the controls that were meant for another?
reboot to the BIOS and turn off the integrated graphics and I can get back in
That sounds like a driver problem but I don't know for which component, e.g. WinPE? Boot Manager?  OS?  So instead of doing that have you tried using the Advanced Boot Option to use low resolution video (AKA VGA mode)?  The BCD allows even
other video related settings.  While you are having problems it would be a good idea to turn on the Boot menu prompt, even if you don't have multiple partitions to boot, just to make it easier to use those options.  FWIW a surprise for me when I
tried this is that we are not restricted to what drivers the OS can use later.  E.g. I just used Win-P once in the OS and could make everything work normally after that.
Another thing that you could try is tracing your boot activity with xbootmgr and then finding out what is different for your two cases.
    Good luck

  • T61 with Advanced Dock and PCI-e graphics card?

Purchased T61 laptop with NVidia Quadro NVS 140M graphics (Type: 7662-CTO).
Purchased ThinkPad Advanced Dock for use with PCI-e graphics card for multi-monitors.  (Type: 2553)
    OS = Vista Ultimate
Purchased PCI-e graphics card:   NVidia Quadro NVS 440  1x
Purchased four Samsung SyncMaster 740bx monitors
Opened Advanced Dock.  Installed Quadro NVS 440 card in PCI-e slot.  Card fits perfectly.
Laptop using most recent BIOS v 1.26
Set BIOS config for PCI-e graphics and DVI default monitor.
Connected all four monitors via DVI.
Laptop in dock, turned on.  BIOS screen displays correctly on external monitors.  Microsoft Corp. screen displays with progress bar.  Screen then goes blank and next step should be the Windows login.  Login screen never displays, however.  Boot-up of laptop halts at this point and never proceeds.
Removed PCI-e card from dock, and placed laptop back in dock.  Laptop boots correctly to Windows.
Assumed faulty dock.  Called Lenovo for replacement dock.  Replacement dock also fails to boot with PCI-e graphics card.
Next assumed bad card.  Tried different card.  ATI FireMV 2400 1x.  Card fits in dock perfectly.  Laptop still fails to boot with card in dock.
Called Lenovo.  Asked for a list of cards that will work in the dock.  Tech support did not know.  I asked if anyone at Lenovo has ever seen a T61 laptop work with the Advanced Dock and a PCI-e graphics card.  Tech said no.  Issue has been escalated to engineering.  I still do not have an answer as to which PCI-e cards, if any, will work in the Advanced Dock.
    Help please.

I spent some time surfing through product release letters and data sheets for the grafic cards offered by Lenovo, no where, as far as I could see, does it say that they are compatible with the advanced dock. What is also interesting, they say for PCs they are only tested for 2 screens, but you found the document MIGR-67464 where they show how to configure 4. [confused smiley]
It looks as though you and RBS have found possible solutions for 4 screens, congrats to all
However, I don't want to be the "party pooper" here, but why doesn't your T61 boot in the dock with graphics card? This is still puzzling me, and to be honest I haven't as yet been able to come up with a reason or probable cause as to why

  • (solved) get X to use my PCI card instead of onboard graphics.

I'm trying to install arch on an old P4 dell (dimension 2350) and given the specific requirements and restrictions of this given beast I'm having a bit of trouble getting X configured.  (I'm turning it into a replacement for my modded xbox running xbmc, yes, I know it won't play hi-def)
    Here's the setup:
    - It has onboard graphics (intel) which I don't plan on using since it only has vga out.
    - I've installed my video card (ATI radeon 9250 - hey it's the best standard pci card I could find)
    Here's the problem:
    - Everything works with the onboard intel chip
    - If I try to plug my monitor in to the ATI card it (the monitor) dims and doesn't register as being attached.\
    - I've tried turning off the onboard graphics in my bios but the only options are "onboard" and "auto" so it's currently set to auto.
    More fun:
    - The fun part is that I plan on using the ATI card's svideo out to my tv once it's set up, I'm just trying to get the monitor to work while I configure everything.
I'm considering trying to run an ubuntu live disc and seeing if I can copy over the xorg.conf file that gets generated.
    Any ideas?
    **edit
After some searching I've got it working.  Apparently linux still reads onboard cards with this pc/bios because of the piss poor bios.
i added 'blacklist agpgart' & 'blacklist intel_agp' (without quotes) to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist, set video to 'auto' in the bios, plugged the monitor into my card and rebooted.
    sweet.

  • IdeaCentre K230 - Doesn't detect graphics cards (in PCI-E Slot)

     Hello,
I bought a IdeaCentre K230 like 1 or 2 weeks ago and tried to install a graphics card. It did not work. Is it possible this motherboard (the stock one that came with the desktop) does not detect it as it does not show in the Device Manager? Because it didn't detect an Nvidia one i had before. Sorry I am real new to this hardware stuff.
So I purchased a ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics card today and tried to install it. I first disabled my on-board graphics driver(s)/adapter (Intel(R) G33/G31 Express Chipset Family) and then I powered off my computer, opened the case, installed the 4670 into the PCI Express slot and put the case back into it's place.
Then I turned on my computer and it was a 800x600 resolution. So I went into Device Manager and checked Display Adapters and I did not see the Radeon. So I opened the CD/DVD drive and inserted the CD that came with the graphics card. Then I ran the installation and it said "Installation complete. Errors have occurred" (or something to that effect). So I was like *** I'm pissed since this is the second card I have tried (previous being an Nvidia). And I'm not sure if I needed to plug the DVI cable for my monitor into the card so I did that and restarted and nothing showed (however I did hear the fan running, so it does have power). So then I plugged in the standard VGA into the adapter thing that came with it (that you plug in a VGA and then you plug the adapter into the card outputting a DVI signal thingy??), got nothing. So then I plugged the VGA into the one that is not on the card but on the computer itself. Then display showed (again, in 800x600). I am sure that the card is physically installed properly as I hear the fan running, and see it running. I also might add that the graphics card does not require additional power as it gets its power via the PCI Express port.
Please, PLEASE help me as to what I am doing wrong.
The Nvidia 9600 GSO did not work because the motherboard did not detect it (according to Geek Squad @ Best Buy). I am afraid that might be the problem of this one too. But I really want a good graphics card to work in my computer.
    Computer Specs:
    Pentium Dual-Core CPU E5200 @ 2.50GHz (5.00 total GHz)
    6.00 GB ram
    Windows Vista 64-bit

I wouldn't say that the power supply would be the problem. It would definitely keep the graphics card from reaching it's full potential.
Generally you would do the following....
    Power off computer.
Flip the switch on the power supply to off.
    Open case.
Insert the card into the PCI-E x16 slot.
Connect VGA/DVI to graphics card. [If required, connect power supply to graphics card. But I see this is not the case.]
    Boot up computer.
    Install driver.
    Adjust resolution/settings.
    Enjoy.
    Try reseating the graphics card.

  • Non Graphic card in 760GM-E51 PCIe x16 Slot

Why can't I use the on board graphics and attach a PCIe x2 or x4 SATA controller in the PCIe x16 slot?  Any non graphic board is simply ignored.

Quote from: Bollwerk on 24-December-10, 03:39:17
That did it! Apparently, the bridge chip changes it between x16/x1 and x8/x8. Once I switched it to x8/x8 (SLI mode), the Asus card was recognized.
    Thanks!
Almost, it changes the slots from x16/x0 to x8/x8
Nice to hear you got it sorted out

  • Eclipse SLI and booting with VGA on 2nd x16 PCI-Ex slot

Is it possible? It is simple operation and -probably- I could find out myself but I prefer to ask instead toying with add-on cards just to test theory.
I have plans to buy Intel's SRCSASBB8I RAID Controller [http://www.intel.com/Products/Server/RAID-controllers/SRCSASBB8I/SRCSASBB8I-overview.htm] or something similar from 3Ware/LSI. I want to create some proper hardware RAID 5/50 because software RAID 5 from x58 is total overkill and completely pointless. Built-in JMB chips are fine, but only for RAID1 operations. Because RAID card is PCI-Ex 8x (and 3Ware/LSI too) to reduce chaos inside I planning to put it in the first PCI-Ex x16 slot. Because of that, my initial question stands. Will PC boot if VGA card is not inserted into first x16 PCI-Ex slot? Even better, maybe you tested such controller inside company?
If yes (booting) then great, if not then why not? Do I need some specific BIOS or is it hardware (chipset) limitation?
    Thanks in advance.

OK, I just turned off PC for 30 - very valuable  - minutes instead bogging support about something so trivial.
And in short... IT WORKS! Sort of.
But not everything is so rosy. While switch to 2nd x16 PCI-Ex slot resulted with some surprisingly positive results it also resulted with something bad.
Well as most people running with only 1 VGA and 1 or 2 HDDs and 1 or 2 optical drives first is the good news:
+ Temperature drop on the North Bridge was tremendous. ~10C during stress (drop from 58C to 49C with i7 920 clocked at 3.3 GHz and Thermaltake Extreme Spirit 2 cooler on NB). Probably because VGA blocked some of hot air which now was freely blown away.
    Bad news are:
    - Blue SATA ports are half accessible. Port 7&8 is OK, because it is on the edge of the VGA board, but ports 9&10 are complete no go. If you have something connected there it will work*, but to disconnect SATA device from Motherboard you need to remove VGA. There is no other way around. In two words: it sucks. If you have a lot of HDDs.
    - 2nd bad news is that such combination (VGA on 2nd slot) works only for less powerful (or older) cards. My 8800 GTS640 slot-in quite well, but with bigger cards (more than 26 cm - 10.1") it is also complete no go. GTX 2xx/4xx/Radeon 5870/5970 forget it. Big card will cover ports 9&10 and thus rendering them completely useless.
    * - assuming you using VGA smaller or equal 26 cm/10.1" - does not apply to cards with 1 slot cooling
I hope it helps, and someone else will benefit from that. Meanwhile I need to look for some external RAID 5 HDD enclosure without NAS. Why all manufacturers are so obsessed with it?
BTW: Jack my SB (included with Eclipse) still does not record audio even if I tested it on few clean Win installations (32/64). But in all honestly I completely forgot about it because testing was conducted long time ago. PCI SB rules.... just like Asus Xonar on PCI-Ex.

To isolate the problem you should try a different VGA cable and a different monitor.
If those don't help then the problem is with the computer.
Try unplugging it from the wall wait 10 seconds and plug it back in... This is kind of a cure all for many mega 180 ills.
The onboard graphics uses system memory. How much is allocated to it in BIOS. 128 MB is recommended for most home theater types of applications.
Have you tried resetting the BIOS settings to all defaults ?
If you've done all these things and nothing helps it sounds like the board may be bad.

  • Quick question: what is the difference between graphic and movie clips?

What is the difference between the two symbols: graphic and movie clips? They both contain frames..?

    movie clips can have
instance names : so they can be controlled via actionscript
filters applied : drop shadow, glow, blur, color adjust etc
blend modes applied : difference, screen, lighten, darken, etc.
    3d transformations
    graphics:
    none of the above
the only real practical reason to use a graphic is the reason jdehaan stated. a graphics internal animation can be scrubbed via the main timeline. graphics will only advance when the main timeline advances. when the main timeline stops.. graphics stops.
movieclips on the otherhand are said to run independent of the main timeline. so you can have a MAIN timeline with one frame only and the movieclip's interior animation will run constantly.
also via the properties panel you can tell a graphic to stay stuck on a certain frame or loop a set number of times.
always use movieclips unless you have a reason not too. as kglad said it will save you and others a lot of hurt in the future.
