Once again storage space vanishes

What is going on with the latest iOS and space disappearing? Yesterday I put my phone on charge with 7.8 gb of free space reported. I pick it up an hour or so later and now just 7.4 gb free. So I lost nearly half a gig doing precisely nothing!!!! The same tonight, after deleting some apps earlier I got back to about 8 gigs free, charge phone and a couple hours later am down to 7.5 gig free. This is a joke, space vanishes from time to time for no good reason. I know other can grow through caching etc but this is ridiculous. I haven't even sync'd with iTunes which can cause other to grow largely, I don't need to as I use iTunes match - which I haven't been using in last couple days so cannot be blamed for the loss of space. Where does it go? I have used all the file browser programs too. There is no rhyme or reason, the space just vanishes over time. It had taken a few months to drop by 0.1 gigs here and there. But yesterday and tonight to lose somewhere approaching 0.8 gigs to doing nothing is a particular slap in the face. The only thing I have done is shuffle the position of some apps around on the various home screens and created a group folder. Could this be the trigger, a glitch in the matrix!!!??
Its also evident on my iPad and my wifes iPad from time to time. Space just seems to dwindle. I wish Apple could address this aspect better. It has to be cloud related and seems prevalent in both iOS8 and also was the same in iOS7 (albeit to a lesser extent).

maybe another theory is something to do with icloud backup. It's using space up attempting to create a daily backup and not releasing the space again. Perhaps I took it off charge as it was preparing it, though I think unlikely. and that wouldn't explain the sudden loss of space in each instance. Could be app updates, and ios again not releasing space. I checked cloud assets in iphone explorer and there is nothing significant in here. I logged out of iTunes account as that can release cached space. I got a groundbreaking 0.1 gigs back. Something not good about sudden space loss. It does not reconcile under usage. Claims 19.2 gigs used up. I added up evwry entry under here and it only adds to 16.2. So a whole 3 gigs cannot be accounted for! I did the same yesterday before today's loss and it didn't reconcile again (it never does) but it was only 2.5 gigs difference. So evident 0.4/0.5 gigs has just vanished into thin air.

  • How is it possible to cancel (not suspend) a video download from iTunes Store (iPad under iOs 6)? (I do not have sufficient storage space on my iPad)

    Hi,
I am facing the following difficulty with my iPad (model MD369NF/A) under iOs 6.1.3.
I have bought 2 videos on iTunes Store, but I do not succeed in downloading them: an error message mentions that iPas does not have enough storage capacity.
As a matter of face, when I look at the way the storage is used, I find “Others” for around 10 Go (is there some king of reserved space for the downloading of videos from iTunes Store?), and only a very small number of Mo available.
I would simply like to cancel the downloading of the 2 videos, and hope that it would free the "Others" storage space (in the hypothesis that "Others" is space reserved for videos once downloaded), but I do not manage to do it. I can suspend the downloading, but I do not see how to cancel it.
Would you have a solution to propose ?
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Nicolas

    Hey Nicolas36,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The following article outlines issues with free space, capacity, and a large amount of "other" space. You'll want to connect your iPad to your computer with iTunes to follow the steps:
iOS: 'Not enough free space' alert when trying to sync
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1503
One symptom of this issue will be displayed in iTunes where the Capacity indicator for the iOS device will report a large amount of "Other" disk usage for the device. To resolve this issue:
    - Turn off the music or photo sync option in iTunes for the device.
    - Click Apply to sync the changes to the device.
    - Turn the music and photo sync options for the device on again.
    - Click Apply again to try to sync the device to iTunes.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Issues with exporting movie - insufficient storage space

    Hello,
Last night I tried to export a 50 minute movie that I created - I checked my hard disk space and I had 4.3Gb available at the time. I didnt think I would have enough space to export in 720p resolution but tried anyway. Imovie started to create the movie but stopped ~60% through stating that it had insufficient storage space to complete the export. But now, instead of having 4.3Gb available I only have 335 Mb available as I believe Imovie did not delete the unfinished file when it cancelled the export (its storage usage went from 500 mb to 4.3gb after the failed export). The issue is, I now have to way of accessing the unfinished file to delete it and do not have enough storage space to export at a lower resolution! Has anyone else run into this issue?
Is there anyway to access the files embedded in iMovie?
If not if I delete iMovie do my saved projects remain?
Otherwise is there anyway to export my movie onto my computer directly?
I unfortunately did not back up the iPad prior to the export so I cant restore it from a previous point.
    Really appreciate your help!

Sadly you are rather stuck at this point.
This appears to be an error in movie that does not clear the space if it is unable to finish creating a movie.
Your 50 minute video would be about 4 gb by my estimates.
imovie would first create this video within the app (apps are sandboxes and must create files within their own memory area).
Once the video is made, iMovie can copy this video to the camera roll.
The way iOS works is to avoid mixing data, thus it is a copy process.
Which means you would have to have 8 gb of space to create your video.
I am going to guess that iMovie correctly made the video, but now has no where to copy it.
And rather annoyingly it holds on to the video for now.
You need another 4 gb space to compete the export.
As you have not enough space left on the iPad you are in a bind and there are only a couple of options left for you.
Firstly, if you delete iMovie iOS you will lose your projects.
I do not advise deleting iMovie.
You cannot export the project, and iMovie iOS projects contain the source video.
So you would need about 4gb of space to export the project.
Also do not delete the source videos, iMovie just links to the camera roll.
So if you delete the video from the photos app then iMovie will lose the video too.
There is no way that is Apple sanctioned to clear the space in iMovie.
Apple has strict rules on what we can discuss in these forums, so I cannot help or advise how to clear iMovie of the half made video.
My best advise would be to delete another app, or files from your iPad.
I hope you have at some point backed up your iPad to your Mac, of iCloud?
If not then do so now.
Then I would suggest you delete large apps to clear space.
    These can be restored later.
Look for games or apps that save their user data online.
I have a few Gameloft games, and they store my game data on their servers.
This way you can restore where you were later again.
Or you could connect to iTunes, and delete all the music off the iPad.
THen finish exporting the video, and restore the music later.
Have a look here to see how to use iOS to check what other apps are using space:
    http://ipadinsight.com/ipad-tips-tricks/how-to-see-how-much-space-is-being-used- by-each-of-your-apps-in-ios-5/
Good luck, and I hope it works out for you..

  • Once again less service for more money ~ Personal Web Pages being discontinued!!!

Once again I would like to thank COMCAST for being cheap and money hungry. I use my personal web pages daily. This will create a lot of work and take a lot of time to move thing to another server that I will have to pay for on top of paying for internet service with COMCAST. Way to go. This will only cost me time and money once again. Stop being so cheap!!!! Bob

Yep. I'm extremely angry about this! I have been using the web space for years in order to upload helpful files to other people on Overclock.net such as screenshots, important setup files, important Windows files that someone might have lost, zip files containing a bunch of files that someone desperately needs, etc. etc. etc. That's years of uploading, and so it's years of files! Now that's being stripped away from me. Why? This is 2015, not 1985. It's not hard to provide storage space these days. Good lord. Comcast, are you really hurting for storage space on your servers? You have stolen our money for years, so the least you can do is let us keep our web spaces. I have created 7 different accounts on my Comcast account so that I could have 7 GB of storage space, which I have used quite well over the years. So now I have to sit here downloading ALL OF MY FREAKIN' FILES, and then I have to take them to some other location! Then, I have to go and update hundreds of links on Overclock.net and hundreds of screenshots in hundreds of posts that act as ARTICLES - not just posts. If I don't do that, then I'll have people asking me every single day why my links are broken and why my screenshots aren't showing up. Comcast, you sure know how DISSATISFY your customers I hate you now. I genuinely do. You have ruined my day, Comcast. I was actually having a good day for once, until you sent out the e-mail telling all of us about this.

  • Storage Spaces Upgrade Mystery

So I have a custom built server running Server 2012 Essentials. It has a storage spaces pool with a bunch of drives in parity config. I decided to upgrade to 2012 Essentials R2. I did the research and found it needed to be a clean install, but that was OK
because I was planning on moving the OS off an older platter drive and install to an SSD. Then I researched migrating the storage spaces pool over once I had the new OS running. I found some people who said it was a pain, and some people who said it was easy.
I found an article with the handful of powershell commands that should get my storage pool alive on R2 and upgraded to the R2 implementation of storage spaces.
So here is the mystery. I could not install the OS with the storage pool drives attached. Windows setup only saw the SSD in the screen asking what drive I wanted to install on (good), but when I would select it, it would give me a weird message of "We
couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information, see the Setup log files." When I booted down and removed power from all the pool drives, this issue went away when I tried again and 2012 R2 essentials installed fine.
So I got ready with my powershell commands and plugged in all the storage pool drives and booted the server back up. Shockingly, the storage spaces pool was just right there when I logged in. Fully intact, writable, and healthy. I didn't have to run any
powershell commands to select it, make it writable, bring it online, convert it, etc... it just worked. I did try to run the update commandlet to bring the storage space current, and it asked me to confirm, but then it didn't seem to do anything after that,
and calling the cmdlet to get current jobs showed nothing running.
So I am not complaining, but I don't get why I was able to do this without any special steps, while every article and doc I found with people in similar situations had to jump through all sorts of hoops.

Move data from storage spaces to backup destination, make a clean OS install, re-create storage spaces from scratch (whatever disk layout you choose), move data back from backup location to storage spaces. Everything else is playing dice.

First of all try to optimize code.

  • Storage Spaces UI missing disks when a controller reports the same UniqueID for all attached disks (e.g. Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8)

Summary: The Storage Spaces UI has several problems when there are more than 21 physical disks available to Storage Spaces.
I have 28 SATA disks connected over 6 controllers. 2 are used for an Intel motherboard RAID1 for OS (PhysicalDisk0), so that leaves 26 data disks for Storage Spaces. [The plan is to get to 36 data disks in due course by adding disks (this 36-bay chassis: http://www.supermicro.com/products/chassis/4U/847/SC847A-R1400LP.cfm)]
Initially, there were 23 data disks (5x 1TB, 1x 640GB, 14x 500GB, 3x 250GB) as PhysicalDisk1-23 (in that order), which I put into a storage pool. I created a parity disk over all 23 disks. It looks like it is working fine, albeit very slowly on writes.
I've now added 3 more 4TB disks, as PhysicalDisk24-26, and taken them offline, and have now noticed errors in the Storage Pools UI in the Server Manager. For example:
    * No more than 21 disks ever show up in the "Physical Disks" area in the lower right. When the 23 disks are connected, only the first 21 show up in the pool I created. With 26 disks connected, only the first 20 show up in the pool, and only 1 more of the
new 3 (PhysicalDisk26) shows up in the Primordial group.
    * In the Properties of the parity Virtual Disk created over the 23 disks, the disks are shown incorrectly. Again, only 21 disks are shown, and PhysicalDisk26 is incorrectly shown as part of the virtual disk. See image:
    * Using the New Storage Pool Wizard, I cannot add more than 1 of the new 3 disks to a new Storage Pool (only PhysicalDisk26 is available). And the details incorrectly refer to PhysicalDisk21. See image (a WDC WD2500JD-22H is a 250GB disk, not a 4TB disk).
Thus I cannot use the new disks in a new storage pool.
According the blog post at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2012/01/05/virtualizing-storage-for-scale-resiliency-and-efficiency.aspx:
    Q) What is the minimum number of disks I can use to create a pool? What is the maximum?
You can create a pool with only one disk. However, such a pool cannot contain any resilient spaces (i.e. mirrored or parity spaces). It can only contain a simple space which does not provide resiliency to failures. We do test pools comprising multiple hundreds
of disks – such as you might see in a datacenter. There is no architectural limit to the number of disks comprising a pool.
However, the UI currently does not seem to correctly work with more than 21 physical disks. Please advise.
    Using Server 2012 RC.
    Hardware: Supermicro X8SAX (BIOS v2.0), Intel i7-920 2.67GHz, 6x 2GB DDR3-1333 (certified Crucial CT25664BA1339.16SFD)
Disk controllers: 2x RAIDCore BC4852 (PCI-X, final 3.3.1 driver) (15 ports used), 2x Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 (PCIe, 4.0.0.1200 Marvell driver to allow >2TB disks) (6 ports used), Sil 3114 (PCI, latest 1.5.20.3 driver) (1 port used), motherboard Intel
in RAID mode (4 ports used for data, plus 2 for OS RAID1).

An update. I added 16x SATA disks across 2x Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8. All 16 disks report the same UniqueID.
I have 25 disks in the pool now (23 as parity; 2 as journal added via PowerShell). 10 of these are on the two AOC-SASLP-MV8 controllers. Only the first 16 disks show up in the UI, so 9 are missing from the UI - which is consistent with this UI bug where
only one disk per UniqueID shows up. PowerShell does work to manage the SS.

  • How can I configure ReFS to NOT fail read operations when a checksum error is detected (on non-Storage-Spaces volumes where data integrity streams are enabled)?

According to William Stanek, in his Windows Server 2012 R2 Inside Out: Configuration, Storage & Essentials book, this is apparently possible: (pg. 615 - here it is on Google Books: https://books.google.ca/books?id=0IyfBAAAQBAJ&pg=PT819&lpg=PT819&dq=read+operation )
Integrity can be enabled when the system is not running on Storage Spaces. When
integrity is enabled and ReFS detects a checksum mismatch, ReFS logs an event and
fails the read operation by default. If you don’t want the read operation to fail, you
can configure ReFS to continue with the read operation. A related event will be logged
        regardless.
So then how do I configure it to do that???
(And just to make it super-clear, I'm NOT using Storage Spaces, so there is no redundancy via mirroring/parity, and I'm not expecting any file repair - just detection of corruption. It's just a basic volume formatted with ReFS and
with integrity streams enabled, via format E: /fs:ReFS /i:enabled
For those who want more details, here's the situation:
I try to perform a read operation on a file with corrupted data (purposely done for testing using a low-level disk editor), I get a the following error message:
And an event ID 133 from ReFSv1 gets logged in the System log:
Clicking "Try Again" just brings up the same message, and clicking "Skip" skips the operation entirely.
This is indeed the correct default behaviour.
What I want instead is for the read operation to be allowed to complete, with corrupt data and all, and ONLY for the event to be logged. And according to William Stanek, this is supposed to be configurable somewhere - and after hours of searching, I haven't
    been able to find anything.

    Hi Tommy,
    >>How can I configure ReFS to NOT fail read operations when a checksum error is detected
We can use PowerShell command Set-FileIntegrity to configure this. The specific parameter for controlling this behavior is
-Enforce <Boolean>which indicates whether to enable blocking access to a file if integrity streams do not match the data.
Regarding this point, the following article can be referred to as reference.
    Set-FileIntegrity

    Hi Everyone
We just purchased two new servers (Lenovo RD640's) and an external SAS JBOD enclosure (the Lenovo SA120), and we would like to set up a 2012 r2 failover cluster with clustered storage spaces as the shared storage.  Currently they are
on their own domain with the virtual active directory server residing locally on one of the servers.
Preface: I've created and destroyed the cluster and storage spaces multiple times trying to solve this issue, so I don't know if I may have "leftovers" from those attempts now causing issues for me.
I can create the cluster, and it passes validation, and can create a clustered storage pool, but every time I try to create a virtual disk (either through the Failover cluster manager, the server manager, or powershell), it won't attach.  If
I try to manually attach it I get the message: "Error attaching or detaching virtual disk: Failed to attach virtual disk to <node name>. Access denied"
Finally (and I don't know if this is related or not), when in storage spaces on the server manager, there is a gold banner at the top that says "Incomplete communication with cluster <cluster name>. The following cluster nodes or clustered roles
might be offline or have connectivity issues: <cluster name>"
I'm logged in with full domain administrator credentials, and have been running my head against this wall for a few days now.  Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks for your responses. Here is what I have to report:
When I destroy the cluster, and create the storage spaces on just one of the two servers (with the other server powered down), I'm able to create the storage pool - using all the HDDs and SSDs - and virtual disks (both tiered and non-tiered) without issue.
As soon as I create the cluster again, the virtual disks become "detached", and I'm back to the situation described initially.
@Apamnapat, here's the output of the powershell commandlets you suggested:

  • I am receiving a notification that says that I am running out of storage space. I backed up time mating to an external hard drive. Can I delete some files to make room?

I am receiving notifications that I am running out of storage space. I backed up my mac book using an external and time machine. Can I delete some files to make room?
    If so,
When I want to restore from my time machine, can I pick and choose, say certain songs, photos or documents?

About TM "Backup Drive is Full"
Alert TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive. You can also use the Time Machine application to selectively remove files, but that may be ineffective if you have to free up GBs of space.

  • Install Windows Server 2012 R2 VM on Storage Spaces with Storage Tiers

    Hey guys
In my small/medium sized company we will soon update to Windows Server 2012 R2. I would like to implement virtual servers using Hyper-V. I didn't find a lot of information about Hyper-V in combination with storages spaces and autoamted storage tiers.
And this is very confusing to me as it seems to me that this would be the best practice as it is the most cost-efficient and most elegant solution.
    My ideal scenario:
With Hyper-V I virtualize two Windows Server 2012 R2 instances. So two separate virtual machines.
I use the following disk setup:
    1x cheap HDD  40GB for hyper-v server 2012 r2 core.
    2x SSD 200GB (enterprise-grade)
    2x HDD 4TB (7.2k, enterprise-grade)
    Step 1:
I will install Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 Core on the 40GB HDD. Via command line, I will create a storage pool with automated tiered storage using the SSDs and the HDDs in mirrored mode the following way:
With Tiered Storage, I create a storage pool containing the SSDs and the HDDs. Then I create storage space A (1TB) and B (3.2TB) with the SSDs in a mirrored setup and the HDDs in a mirrored setup. The SSDs for the „hot files“ and the HDDs for the „cold files“.
    Step2:
Ontop of the storage space A I want to install the first Windows Server 2012 R2 instance with Active directory. On storage space B I want to install the second Windows Server 2012 R2 instance for a business application to run on it.
    Conclusion:
The SSDs are mirrored and therefore one SSD can fail.
The 4TB HDDs are mirrored and therefore one HDD can fail.
I have a fast and easy scalable environment.
But in the Internet I found many information that it’s not possible to install an operating system onto a storage tier.
    Question 1:
    Is this setup possible?
    Question 2:
If this setup is possible, why is not everyone doing it?
    Question 3:
Is it possible to do Step 1 over a GUI from a remote machine?
    Question 4:
If the creation of Storage Tiers in the Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 is not possible. Would it work to use a Windows Server 2012 R2 as a parent system on the 40GB HDD? To do Step 1?
I would gladly get some feedback of people knowing Storage Tiers well.
    Thanks a lot!

I would absolutely prefer a GUI. But a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard Licence allows you to run two VM machines.
It also grants you a physical installation ("POSE" in the licensing documents). You can buy one copy of WS2012R2 Standard, install it on the hardware, enable Hyper-V, and then operate two virtual machines with WS2012R2 Standard ("VOSE"
in the licensing documents). The only restriction is that the management operating system (POSE) can only run services and applications meant to manage the virtual machines and/or the management operating system. The Hyper-V Server license is the same way
so it's not really any different.
In short, given the benefits of the GUI at your stage of learning, you have no solid reason not to install the full system and take advantage of it. You can disable the GUI later once you get your footing. Or not. Whatever suits you. However, in response
to your Question 3, you can do this all remotely. Once you get WS2012R2 installed in a guest, you can use it to manage the management operating system if you want. There are many options.
But then I would also need to have redundancy on the 40GB HDD as if this HDD brakes, all others brake as well?
Yes, you're going to want some redundancy for the management operating system. But, you've listed 5 drives in your original layout. You don't really have a 5-bay system, do you? Is there an empty sixth bay? Could you not get two 40 GB drives instead of one
    and use hardware RAID-1?

  • ICloud storage space used up by old data from 1st gen iPad I traded in nearly 2 yrs ago for an iPad Mini. Can't backup any info for mini or new 6 plus. How can I access this old data to clear it out?

My iCoud storage space is being used up by old data from a 1st  generation iPad I traded in nearly 2 yrs ago for an iPad Mini. The people at the sprint store where I made my trade were supposed to transfer everything over from my old iPad to the new Mini once they backed up the old device to iCloud. Well, long story short, none of the data ever got transferred to the new iPad, but it all got backed to iCloud, eating up all my storage space. Here I am almost 2 years later, and I've never been able to back-up my iPad mini. What's worse, My iPhone 4 wasn't backed up that whole time, and now I can't back-up my data from my new iPhone 6 Plus to iCloud either. Trying to find creative ways to store and save my information and data between all my devices is getting to be ridiculous. I don't want to upgrade my storage space though...just want to clear out a great deal of what is already being stored. How can I access this old data to clear it out?

The only way to access data from an iCloud backup is to restore it to your device.  You could, for example, back up your iPad mini to your computer using iTunes (by connecting it, opening iTunes, then going to File>Devices>Back Up and choosing to back up apps and transfer purchases when prompted), then erase it and restore the old iPad backup (as explained here: iCloud: Restore or set up your iOS device from iCloud), save any recovered data you want to keep, then restore your iTunes backup back to your iPad mini (by connecting it to your computer, opening iTunes, then going to File>Devices>Restore from Backup).
Once you're done with the old backup, delete it from your account to free up the space.

  • Storage Spaces: Virtual Disk taken offline during file copy, marked as "This disk is offline because it is out of capacity", but plenty of free space

Server 2012 RC. I'm using Storage Spaces, with two virtual disks across 23 underlying physical disks.
    * First virtual disk is fixed provisioning, parity across 23 physical disks: 10,024GB capacity
    * Second virtual disk is fixed provisioning, parity across the remaining space on 6 of the same physical disks: 652GB capacity
These have been configured as dynamic disks, with an NTFS volume spanned across the two (larger virtual disk first). Total volume size 10,676GB. For more details of the hardware, and why the configuration is like this, see: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserver8gen/thread/c35ff156-01a8-456a-9190-04c7bcfc048e
I'm copying several TB from a network share to this volume. It is very slow at ~12MB/sec, but works. However, three times so far, several hours in to the file copy and with plenty of free space remaining, the 10,024GB virtual disk is suddenly taken offline.
This obviously then fails the spanned volume and stops the file copy.
The second time, I took screenshots, below. The disk (Disk27) is marked offline due to "This disk is offline because it is out of capacity". And the disk in the spanned volume is marked as missing (which is what you would expect when one of its member disks
    is offline).
I can then mark the disk (Disk27) back online again, and this restores the spanned volume. I can then re-start the file copy from where it failed. There doesn't appear to be any data loss, but it does cause an outage that requires manual attention. As you
can see, there is plenty of space left on the spanned volume.
Each time this has happened, there are a few event 150 errors in the System event log: "Disk 27 has reached a logical block provisioning permanent resource exhaustion condition.". Source: Disk.

This error seems to be related to thin provisioning of disks. I found this:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/hh848068(v=vs.85).aspx. But both these Virtual Disks are configured as Fixed, not Thin provisioning, so it shouldn't apply.
My thoughts: the virtual disk should not spuriously go offline during a file copy, even if it was out of space. And in any case, there is plenty of free space remaining. Also, I don't understand the reason for why it is marked as offline ("This disk is offline
because it is out of capacity"). Why would a disk go offline because it was out of thin capacity, rather than just returning an "out of disk space" error while keeping it online.

Interesting Thread, I've been having the same issue. I had a failed hardware RAID that was impossible to recover in place, so after being forced to do a 1:1 backup, I find myself with 5 2TB hard drives to play with. Storage Spaces seemed like an interesting
way to go until I started facing the issues we share.
So my configuration is A VM Running Windows Server 2012 RC with 5 Virtualized Physical drives using a SCSI interface, 2TB in size that make up my storage pool. A Single Thinly provisioned Disk of 18 TB (using 1 disk for parity)
Interestly enough, write speed has not been an issue on this machine (30~70MB/s, up from 256k on the beta)
Of note to me is this error in my event log 13 minutes before the drive disappeared:
"The shadow copies of volume E: were deleted because the shadow copy storage could not grow in time.Consider reducing the IO load on the system or choose a shadow copy storage volume that is not being shadow copied."Source: volsnap, Event ID: 25, Level: Error
    followed by:
"The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur in VolumeId: E:, DeviceName: \Device\HarddiskVolume17.(The physical resources of  this disk have been exhausted.)"Source: Ntfs (Microsoft-Windows-Ntfs), Event ID: 140, Level: Warning
I figure the amount of space available to me before I start encountering physical limits is in the vicinity of about 7TB. It dropped out for the second time at 184 GB.
FYI, the number of columns created for me is 5

To add to Nick's comments, "Other" is typically approximately 1 gigabyte.  Occasionally for some users, it gets much (many times) bigger because they have some corrupt files.  If that's the case, it's best to restore the iPhone.
Plug the iPhone into (current) iTunes, let it sync, then choose "Restore" on the right.  If restoring from the iPhone backup does not help, then restore (again) as new and then manaully sync the iPhone.
