Once an iDVD is complete & burned question

If I have completed and burned a new iDVD can I take that iDVD and insert into another MAC and edit it?
Example: I created an iDVD for a friend and mailed to her. Now she wants to change the music on the iDVD I made. Is this possbile? Can she upload the idvd onto her MAC and edit it?

Q: If I have completed and burned a new iDVD can I take that iDVD and insert into another MAC and edit it?
A: No. A dvd is considered a finished product in that it is highly compressed data (normally to mpeg 2 format) and not normally intended for editing again.
What you can do is archive the iDvd project file to an external HD or volume (or another mac) and then use another mac for further editing. However this approach uses large amounts of disc space.
Another option might be to send the dvd to your friend and then use a third party app to convert to QT for use within the i-apps.

Directly from iDvd's Help Menu:
Archiving an iDVD project to back it up or transfer it to another computer
You can archive your iDVD project to back it up or transfer it to another computer. This is useful in an environment with several computers, such as a computer lab, where only certain computers contain a SuperDrive or have an external DVD burner for burning DVDs.
When you archive your project, iDVD keeps all the assets (movies, photos, audio files, themes, and the files in the DVD-ROM section of the project) together and linked so that the project can be moved and reopened without errors.
Archiving a project can take some time because all the data in the project must be copied and relinked. You can cancel the archiving process at any time.
NOTE: If your project uses a special font, make sure that font is installed on the computer where you transfer your project. Otherwise, you won’t see the font in your project.
To archive your iDVD project:
Check the file permissions for the media assets (photos, movies, and so on) in the project and set them to Read & Write if you want others to be able to open or copy the assets in the archived project.
Choose File > Archive Project, and then click Save.
Type a name for your archived project.
Locate the folder where you want to save the project.
The size of the current project is displayed in the Archive Project dialog.
Click “Include themes” if you want to archive the theme or themes used in your project.
Select this option if you are using customized themes that might not exist on another computer.
Click “Include encoded files” so that the project files won’t need to be reencoded after being moved to a different location.
If you want to save time and hard disk space, however, leave this option unchecked.
Click Save.
A progress bar shows that your project is being archived. The larger the project, the longer it takes to archive.
Your project is saved with the word “Archived” in the file name.
You can open the archive and continue to edit the project if necessary.
NOTE: If you open a project archive and add media files to it, those files are not automatically added to the archive. So if you want to include those files in the archive, you must archive the project again.
Hope the above helps but if not just come on back.

iDVD is not a format that can be viewed online.  Personally I would try creating a slideshow in iPhoto with the same photos and audio as used in iDVD. Then export as a movie file with the Export button at the bottom of the slideshow window:
Since I don't use Face Book I don't know what size to recommend.  Another option would be to get a YouTube account (free) and upload the Quicktime movie file to it.  You can make videos there private or public.
Follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Once the iDVD is burned, what can I delete to free up space without compromising the integrity of the dvd

Once the iDVD is burned, what can I delete to free up space?  I tried deleting the iMovie events and projects, but then the iDVD would no longer play because it said the movie contents or link was not available.  I was under the impression that once I saved the iDVD that the associated video was saved in that file, not a link to an iMovie event and project.  Can somebody help?  Now I have to find the original footage, re-edit it in iMovie, and start the whole iDVD process over because I deleted the iMovie project and events.

Hmmm, did you actually burn a DVD from the project?

  • Formatted iDVD project complete with Themes, etc...burning through Toast?

I need to use Toast to burn my completed iDVD project. Worked a looong time making it perfect with formatting using Themes, custom Text pages, etc... I'd hate to lose all that, but need to use Toast to compress the video to fit a Single Layer DVD. Does Toast preserve the iDVD formatting or not? Can iDVD finalize a project with Toast burning in mind? Help?

If I'm not mistaken, you can create a disc image to the desktop from the file menu in iDvd. Then burn said image in Toast while selecting the fit to dvd option.
But you may be restricted to selecting one of Toast's basic themes.

  • IDVD will not burn.

I prepared 4 slideshows with music in IPHOTO and sent them to IDVD share to burn a DVD. It started its process to burn and it said it would take 2 hours and 22 minutes to burn. The DVD was ejected 22 minutes before it was completed. When I insert the dvd in the computer to see it, it said that I inserted a blank dvd. This has never happened to me before. HELP!  tks

  • IDVD will only burn to 16X discs and not 8X

I replaced my original superdrive with a pioneer DVR-100 because it can burn at 16X speed and dual layer. Now, iDVD will only burn to 16X discs. When I try to use 8X discs I get an error message. iDVD will begin to write, the disc will spin up twice, then the disc is ejected. The really annoying thing is that it makes those discs unusable.
Any ideas how to fix this.

    What brand DVD-R?
I burn Verbatim DVD-R 16X at 4X all the time using a disk image and Toast (or Disk Utility). Try Verbatim. I use other brands too. In both of my "SuperDrives."
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save As Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD 5 project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

  • My iDvd will not burn a disc...there is an encoding error that comes up after the title screen

Like it says in the title...My iDvd will not burn a disc...there is an encoding error that comes up after the title screen.
Here is the process that I have been doing.
    1. put in a blank disk and with the project already being done, i hit burn (not too hard).
    2. iDvd then starts to encode the title.
    3. After the title has been encoded, the burning stops and a message comes up saying "there was an error during encoding" and when ever I try to burn the same message keeps on coming up.
    I am running version 7.0.4
any help would be extremely helpful

  • Why does iDVD '11 stop burning 2 minutes early?

I am supposed to be burning several DVD's to turn into my employer.  I am using iDVD '11 and burning onto Philips DVD-R's.  However, I have a reoccurring problem where the DVD will eject 2 minutes early and the file isn't burned on it completely.  What could be my problem?

    Hi
    A. iDVD is very particular to DVD Brand used.
Memorex, Noname and other Cheap brands usually DO NOT Work as Video-DVDs
    Philips - I don't know (but doubt)
    I only use - Verbatim DVD-R
    B. I now and then use a Cleaning DVD - with brushes - NO Liquid !
    C. I split process into two parts
    • Encoding part
    • Burning part
first by Save as a DiskImage
then burn this with Apple Disk Util tool or Roxio Toast™
    D. I always set's down burn speed to x4 or x2 (IMPORTANT)
    E. I never let the free space on the START-UP Mac OS Hard Disk go less than 25Gb - ever
(other hard disks of NO interest as space only is needed here and can not be used elsewhere)

  • Idvd can't burn .mov with error message

    Hi guys,
I just finished a 57 min. project with Final Cut Express4 containing 8 sequences. I export them separately.  I burned them with idvd : File>Export>Quick Time Movie (self contained uncheck), I include Audio & Video as usual and save them in the Movie Folder as .mov; everything goes fine and I can watch them both in computers and TVs. But when I export the entire project with chapter markers (exactly the same way I did for the above), the result is different, and the idvd refuse to burn it, an error message says ”unsupported file type: broken reference movie”.   Those exported in separate sequences are shown as .mov with a picture icon in my Movie Folder while the other 2 exported with chapter markers are also shown with .mov but with a QuickTime Movie icon.  Although these with Quick Time Movie icon are not accepted by the idvd, I still can burn them through the dvdproj file, but the product can be played with computers only.
I know I must have done something wrong but I don’t know what it’s.  Some one is kind enough to help please.
    Thank you.

    Hi Al
All the Chapters Markers are more than 2 seconds apart and are more than 2 seconds from start points; all sequences are well butted without any gap in between.  However there are markers marked a few frames after the sequences started, which means the previous sequence ended a few frames before the Chapter Markers.  If this is overlap, what should I do from here?  Please walk me through.  Thank you again.  puisum
    Hi MartinR
I am sure you read my response to Alchroma. You both having valuable points.  Now, this is a very good question “if I nest the sequences”. To be honest with you, I am not 100% sure what I did (because this project have been sitting in my computer for 9 months) I but I think I start the entire project with only one sequence at the beginning and I use copy & paste to make the 8 sequences after I put in the chapter makers.  At this point, I have found some problems on the Chapter Markers and I am sure Alchroma doesn’t mind to walk me through then I will take it from there.  Please don’t give up on me yet.  Thank you in anticipation.  puisum

  • IDVD Won't Burn (crashes like crazy)

I know there have been other topics discussing iDVD crash problems, so I apologize if my answer already exists.
I've had this iMac for 4 days now and can't seem to get iDVD to work right. It starts with startup issues. Often, I'll open a project I started and it will just lock up. I get a message telling me I have duration issues and to lower the encoding level to correct it, but when I clock OK it just sits there. I check the Force Quit menu, and it says it's not responding. If I am able to get past this, I lower the encoding level, then try to burn it. It goes through the entire encoding process, but when it gets to the burning step it crashes. The prompt pops up telling me I've inserted a blank DVD (which I didn't) and iDVD says it unexpectedly quit. I just don't get it. This isn't supposed to work like this.
Can anyone give me some things I can try before getting Apple on the phone?

    Hello, DT,
    Welcome to the discussions.
First, no, iDVD is not supposed to work like that :)!
Things to do that may help:
Delete iDVD's preference files. Close iDVD.
Go to your Home(icon with your user name)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.idvd.plist
Drag this plist to the trash. Don't worry. iDVD will create a new fresh one when you relaunch it.
Repair permissions on your hard drive. Again, close iDVD and other open apps. Open Disk Utility(in Applications/Utilities). Make sure the 'First Aid' button is selected, highlight your computer drive's name, and choose to repair permissions.
Now reopen iDVD and see if it is working properly.
Be sure to use a good brand of DVD-R disk for burning--Verbatim and Maxell are recommended, not Memorex.
One other recommendation is to do a 'save as disk image' with all your iDVD projects, and burn your disks from the disk image instead of directly from iDVD, using Disk Utility.
This process of creating a disk image looks exactly like the burn process, but instead of getting a burned disk, you get the disk image. This allows you to see if there are problems with your iDVD project, so you don't waste disks. You can choose a slower burn speed; 4x or less is recommended. It also allows you the option of burning more disks at a later date. Unlike an iDVD project, a disk image is self-contained, so once you know the disk image is fine, you can safely delete the original iMovie and the original iDVD projects, thus saving drive space, without losing your projects.

  • IDVD 6 (after burning) has "moving" parts in a still picture

I went to Israel in March. I came back with many, many pictures and all the audio clips from our tour guide. I have been putting together movies for the past month, night and day. I found out that working in iMovie, on a G5 dual 2.0 GHz (2 GB RAM) or MacBookPro w/1 GB RAM, it was best to leave the movie at about 57 minutes because the spinning beach ball appears too often if I didn't.
Between the 2nd DVD and the 3rd DVD I've had all sorts of problems. I am taking pictures from iphoto to iMovie (using Media Tab) and these are pictures as is. Nothing has been done to them. I then find the clip that matches the place we were and work with it as much as possible so the pictures match what the guide is talking about.
Once the 50+ minutes is done and iMovie starts slowing down, I share to iDVD, create my theme (usually using Pass Through, but I have tried others) and burn the DVD. It takes 3 hours on my G5.
The iMovie runs fine and the iDVD runs fine before burning. I DO NOT render in iMovie as I found the pictures were horrible (pixelated, etc.).
I then watch the movie to see that all is well. About 5 minutes into this 3rd one, the branches/leaves of the olive tree start to "move". Or the grass, or hair on a donkey, or rocks where it looks as if they are alive with tiny little moving piecses on the rock. More like a shaking or jiggling. Sometimes it will stop, other times it will continue and get worse until it's very pixelated.
Finally I thought it was the audio. I tried taking the audio, which was an aiff file, open into QT, and then export as AAC. I removed the areas I thought were causing the problems. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. I booted into Panther and used the iLife 05 that I have.
I am now making a QT compression to see what that does. One iMovie/DVD I worked on for 12 solid nights after work and 1 entire weekend. Same result. Then I finally removed some of the audio (an Olympus digital recorder was used) and it worked for #2 DVD. Maybe a little "movement" but enough to scrape by.
Has anyone run across this before? Tonight I'm trying a different type of DVD. Memorex instead of Verbatim.

My motto with these projects: KISS. You are not doing that....
Tonight I'm trying a different type of DVD. Memorex instead of Verbatim.
I wouldn't do that. Verbatim DVD-R burned at 4X or slower is your best bet. If you create a disk image from iDVD, you can control the burn speed. See below.

I am very frustrated. I have used IDVD many times. I have a 90 minute video and a 4 minute video on IDVD. It plays fine during a preview. However when I go to burn OR create an image. After it finishes rendering the audio it says something like error unable to complete burning process. It never even starts the burning process. I need to burn this ASAP. The confuing part is I get the same message when I try to create a disc image.... Please help me!!!

    Hi Helena
To get a good answer You should start Your own topic. So that all can see.
To find out if You can make it in time You need to support more info:
    - What Mac and speed 600MHz - 2,7 GHz ???
    - What OS - OS X.3.9 or X.4.2
    - What QuickTime 6.5.2 or 7.0.2
    - What iMovie 5.0.2 or 4 or 3 or 2 ??
    - How much free space on Your hard disk ? (>20Gb is good)
If You have a dxG5 2GHz and have stayed with OS X.3.9 and QT 6.5.2 and
    iMovie 5.0.2 then do this.
(I would repair preferenses first with Apple disk util tool)
    Close iMovie
Start a New iDVD-project and chose a theme.
Locate Your movie project icon ("My fantastic movie" - or what ever)
Ctrl-Click on this - select "Show package"
in this there is a folder - Share movie
in this there is a folder - iDVD
in this a QT ref movie is located
Take this "nnnnn.mov" file and drop it just inside the edge of the
theme window You chosen in iDVD
Now fix title and so on as You like it and goto FILE and select
make a disk image on the desktop so You can test it with Apple DVD-player
or if You will chance - burn a fresh DVD.
    Good luck !
