No. Feeel free to remove it, but ideally you would do that before even installing LR4. Ask in teh LR forum how to back up and migrate your catalogs.

I have a Mac Pro with four hard drives. I currently have Lion installed on one hard drive. I want to have the option to boot from either Lion or Snow Leopard. How can I do this?
It's best to install Snow Leopard on one of the three remain drives without an Operating System.
You can then install the applications you need from the original media. Create a User Account using Setup Assistant.
Do you want to migrate User Accounts from the OSX LIon boot drive, or are you keeping the User Accounts separate?
Dual-booting just requires holding the option key during startup and selecting either Lion or Snow Leopard. -
I have a disconnect between my external hard drive and lightroom 5.6. The recommended steps do not connect 11000 photos on the hard drive. How can I connect? I am concerned I have lost my edits in lightroom.
after some sorting out your article, I clicked on a question mark with the message find the missing folder. This brought me to a page where I could choose a folder by year and click on it. The question marks disappeared and the photos were available. In some cases I had to click on the year folder for each subfolder by date.
The find missing folders message did not bring me to the finder window in which I could click on folders in the hard drive itself. I appreciate your help big time!! -
Since installing 10.7.3 my downloads say that I do not have enough space on my computer for the download. These downloads are never more that 200 megs or so and I have 270 gigs left on my hard drive. Somehow the remaining space on my hard drive is not being correctly read. What can I do to fix this? I have run permissions repair several times, but to no avail.
Th downloads do not finish. I am dowloading to a file on my desktop called MUSIC, but it first starts to download to my desktop and then I move it to the MUSIC file also on my desktop and I have been doing this without incident using 10.7.2 as well as 10.7.1 and 10.7.

I have purchased itunes tv series, movies and music and have transferred them onto an external hard drive and tried to play them on my tv on a media hub. The file will not load. Is there some form of blocking by itunes or another p[roblem and how do I fix it?
You can't fix it. iTunes bought content is DRM protected. so it can only be played on authorized devices. i.e devices associated with the apple Id used to purchase the content. Its copyright protection that the rights owners demand.
Circumventing it, is illegal in most countries, and as such cannot be discussed here. If you want to play the content you'll need to connect your computer directly to your TV, or use some other device you can authorize for iTunes content such as an iPad, iPhone , iPod touch or Apple Tv. -
How do I retrieve my purchased songs and playlists from my iTunes account? I have just had to replace my hard drive and have lost pretty much everything!
You can redownload your iTunes store purchases, but you'll need a backup to recover the playlists.

JohnDepends on where you got it - if it came on yoru compujter then you need to have accepeted it in the App store - and it will be in your purchases when you log in with the Apple ID that you used to set up your computer - it mahy be hidden - if you do not find it unhide applications in teh App store

I have adobe CS6 on my old hard drive and i wish to transfer it over to my new hard drive. I no longer have the disc which it came on. How do I do this? also i have only ever put a single copy on a laptop and it is alowed 2........if that matters.
deactivate (help>deactivate) on your old hd.
then install using the installation file(s) and your serial number.

How can I edit lightroom 5 smart previews on mac book pro (mbp) when the lightroom 5 master image files are on my external hard drive is disconnected from the mbp? So far when I try to disconnect the external HD from the mbp, I get the following pop up window: The disk "external hard drive A" couldn't be ejected because "Lightroom" is using it. Quit that application and try to eject this disk again. When I do that and restart Lightroom 5, the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom - Select Catalog screen pops up but doesn't list my external hard drive A as a choice.
I've reviewed Adobe's Lightroom Help | Smart Previews Lightroom 5 web page and still haven't been able to figure what I'm doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated.Your internal HDD. by default, is named 'Macintosh HD'. From what information you supplied, it looks like there is already a Lightroom catalog installed on you local (internal) HDD using the standard naming convention Adobe uses as well as a Lightroom catalog on your external drive which you created. To be sure of which catalog Lightroom is loading when it starts up, To do this, start Lightroom as you normally would. After it starts, select the Lightroom menu item, then select the Catalog Preferences item and finally, navigate to the General tab. The Location information will tell you exactly what catalog Lightroom is opening by default. This will likely be the Photography Mac Book Pro Versions catalog on your external HDD. Once that is confirmed, you are ready to proceed. As an additional test/verification, you can shut down Lightroom and, this time, start Lightroom while holding down the ALT/OPTION key. This will cause Lightroom to pause and display a screen which will allow you to chose a different catalog to open. Navigate to the /Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder and select the Lightroom 5 Catalog.lrcat file. When Lightroom comes up, there should be no previews or folders as this catalog should be empty. Now you can be certain which catalog is being used and which catalog has all your data and you are ready to migrate your current catalog. Shut down Lightroom.
To migrate your current catalog, use Finder to locate your Photography Mac Book Pro Versions folder on your external drive. Select the folder and select COPY from the context menu. Next, use Finder to navigate to the /Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder on you internal HDD. You can start at the Macintosh HD level and work your way down by opening each level (Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures). Select the /Pictures folder and then select PASTE... from the context menu. When the COPY/PASTE is complete, you should see the following files on the Macintosh HD:
Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom/ and
Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions
The Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder will contain the empty default catalog the Adobe created when Lightroom was installed and Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions will contain a copy of the catalog you created on your external HDD.
You are almost done now. Make sure your external drive is still attached for this step. Restart Lightroom using the ALT/OPTION key again. When the Select Catalog screen appears, select the Choose a Different Catalog button (lower left side). When you do, a Finder window will open to allow you to navigate to a catalog of your choosing. Navigate to Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions and select the file Photography Mac Book Pro Version.lrcat. This is the copy you just created. Select the Open button and Lightroom should start. You should see all of your previews and settings just as before. Also, in the left hand panel, all of your folder should show up and none of them should be dimmed and none of your previews should display a small exclamation point badge. Either a dimmed folder name or an exclamation point badge indicates that Lightroom can't find the associated image file. If everything looks good, go to the Lightroom menu, select Preferences and then select the General tab. Under Default Catalog, select an option to either load the LAST catalog opened or select the Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions catalog from the drop down. Shut down Lightroom and then restart it normally. This time, when Lightroom starts, you should be viewing the new copy of your catalog. You can confirm this by looking at the General tab on the Catalog Preferences screen (Lightroom/Catalog Preferences menu items). Shut down Lightroom once again and this time, eject your external drive before restarting. This time, your folders in the left hand panel will be dimmed but you should be able to work with your smart previews. If Lightroom should display a Select Catalog screen with the external drive detached, double check your settings as it indicates Lightroom is still looking at the copy of the catalog on the external drive rather than the new copy you made.
Finally, if you are seeing dimmed folders and/or exclamation point badges with the external drive attached, this indicates a problem. You can select any folder and select Update Folder Location from the context menu. This will allow you to navigate to the copy on the external drive and select it. Lightroom will then update the catalog (select to synchronize the content). This will not only clear the dimmed folder problem but also remove the exclamation point badges for all photos in that missing folder. However, it may indicate that not all went well with the copy of the catalog so make sure to verify all went well. You can use the Get Info option on the two folders. You should see the same number of files/folders for both the copy on the internal drive as well as on the external drive but you can't rely on the byte count because of the possibility of differences between the geometry of the two drives. I would not use Time Machine for this task. Rather I suggest you clone to the external drive. You can then boot from the external drive to restore your clone. First, purchase Carbon Copy Cloner.
Clone using Carbon Copy Cloner
1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
2. Select the Source volume from the left side dropdown menu.
3. Select the Destination volume from the right side dropdown menu.
4. Click on the Clone button.
5. When completed select Disk Center from the Window menu.
6. Click on the Recovery HD tab then select the backup drive from the list.
7. Click on the button labeled "Create a Recovery partition for this volume."
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
You now have a fully bootable copy of your iMac's hard drive. When you receive your iMac back after the drive replacement you can boot it from this backup and use Carbon Copy Cloner to restore the backup from the external drive to the internal drive. The process is identical except you will switch the Source and Destination volumes - Source will be the external drive; Destination will be the internal drive.
Because the newly installed drive will most likely have OS X installed you can skip Steps 5-7. You can now continue to use your external backup drive by setting up scheduled backups with CCC. No need to use Time Machine. -
Installing Lion 10.7.1 or later on a new hard drive
I just bought a new Macbook Pro 17". Guess what??? No installation disks. Only a "recovery" app. How would one go about installing Lion 10.7.1 or later on a new hard drive without a local copy of the system?
I just talked with Support. Apparently, Apple expects you to download the entire system from their computers if you want to install Lion 10.7.1 or higher onto a new drive. The person I spoke with said that you would boot up on a USB drive and then the software would download the system at that time. The problem is, it is a 7 GB download.
I don't know about you but I don't have time to wait 3 days for a download to finish. I say 3 days because I was just downloading a recovery software update (500 MB in size) and Apple's servers were sending it at 60 Kbps per second. My math tells me at that rate a 7 GB download will take somewhere around 32 hours. And that is assuming the download doesn't get interrupted and can recover if it does without starting over from the beginning.
Even if I could reasonably expect 500 Kbps on my connection speed, it will still take 4 hours (and I haven't seen Apple's systems ever run anywhere close to that speed).
Before someone mentions downloading the Lion upgrade software from Apple, be aware that this computer came with Lion 10.7.2. There is no upgrade. And according to Apple, Lion 10.7.1 and later will never have any system disks.
I don't mind the download if I can do it NOW and not when I am in the middle of installing the system.
So I ask again: How would one go about installing Lion 10.7.1 or later on a new hard drive without a local copy of the system? Does Apple seriously expect you to download the entire system at the time you are installing the system?????
There has to be a way around this debacle.So the question remains: How to install from a local copy?
There is no easy way.
If your Mac came with Lion preinstalled, your options are:
1. Make a bootable clone immediately (before adding any apps or other files). Keep that for emergency purposes.
2. Make a second bootable clone whenever there are major changes (and with all your apps and files installed).
3. Purchase the USB stick from Apple for $69.
4. You cannot purchase or download Lion from MAS (except with/through your internet recovery option) because you did not purchase Lion there in the first place (unless you were to completely erase your hard drive and then purchase/download Lion from MAS and then copy/save the installer to a safe place).

I have plenty of space on my hard drive (500GB), but when I plug in my iPhone there is a window stating the pone cannot be backed up because of lack of disk space. The same occurs with attempting to import CD's into iTunes. The hard disk was replaced recently in order to gain extra memory. Is there some sort of limit set up from the original hard drive causing this problem?
Boot up from your Snow Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
If Disk First aid is unable to complete the repair you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer.

I would like to know if you have to back up a macbook hard drive, can I use a external hard drive that has been previously used to back up several pc 's, or is it best to have a separate external drive for the Mac?
In the Mac side of things, backups usually come in two flavors: clones or incrementals.
A bootable clone is a bit-for-bit copy of all essential files in the startup volume. If using the Lions, clones can be made using CarbonCopyCloner or just plain old Disk Utility. These backups represent the safest protection of your info, but take the longest to do. Recovery is an inverse process: you copy the clone back into the internal drive.
Incremental backups start with a complete backup of the startup volume and only copy whatever changed from the previous run. OS X includes the fully integrated Time Machine backup utility to do this. It is extremely easy to do and takes the least amount of time. Recovery is another matter altogether since you have to start with a freshly installed instance of the OS and have to apply all intervening backups to bring the result to the latest saved version.
As for where the backup takes place, the recommended media is an external dedicated drive or drives connected via the fastest interface available on your Mac: Thunderbolt, USB3, Firewire, or USB2. Network-based backups, wired or wireless, are attractive but may not offer the same performance and hence take longer. Also important to note that the entire drive need not be completely dedicated to a single backup. The Mac's EFI firmware infrastructure allows for an unlimited number of partitions on a hard drive and each can be used for either type of backups.

I have denied all access to the hard drive on my i mac what can i do to be able to use it again
I have denied all acess to the hard drive on my Imac I purchased a refurbished imac about 6 months ago and im still not really familiar with every thing as i used to use a windows computer so ill try my best to describe what i have done. On the desk top it had a hard drive icon I open it. There was a section about allowing access. There were three different ones (now Im not exactly sure but i believe it looked something like this

I then changed the bottom one to deny access, the middle one to write to drop box and then the top one to write to drop box ( I quickly realized how stupid this was) It then wouldn't let me do or open anything. I ended up turning it off by pressing the button on the back of the I MAC. When I turned it back on it asked for my password which i entered, then it went to the screen with the apple in the center and the loading icon underneath and has not changed.
What can i do so i can use it again?

Anything in local folders is stored only on your local hard disk.

* in the copies and folders, change the archive folder to other and select the archive folder for local folders (the local folders account entry in the list will expand if you hover the mouse over it)
