Once more: hdv -- scene detection

Hello,
what is the reason that premiere cs4 is not be able to detect scenes in HDV material?
Why "we" have to use HDVSplit?
Carlos

Ask Adobe. They are always last to introduce such basic functionality that is readily available in freeware/shareware for ages. Look at DV. Scenalyzer offered scene detection for more than two years before Adobe finally caught up and still does not compare favourably to Scenalyzer that offers a lot more. Adobe probably needs to progress to CS7, meanwhile stealing our $$ for each and every upgrade and still not delivering on time.
IMO there is nothing wrong with HDVSplit. It works reliably and does what we expect it to do. If you don't like this answer, contact Adobe, maybe they can get their stuff together before 2015. (ETA CS5: 2011, CS6: 2013, CS7:2015)

It's already v4.0.1 and still, no scene detect for HDV.
Adobe, wake up and smell the competition....

    The

  • Scene Detect Error in HDV

I am using sony HC9 HDV and Premiere CS3.
when I capture the tape in HDV, the funtion of Scene Detect can not be used.
it can only be used in down convert mode.
i have tried 2 computers and 3 different capture cards.
is there anyone facing the same problem?
    can anyone help me please?
    thor.

Alas no scene detection in Premiere, use HDVSplit.

  • Scene Detect in HDV?

I can't believe that scene detect doesn't work in HDV - how is this even remotely possible? iMovieHD has this and its a free app that comes with the computer!
Is there any chance that Adobe is going to include this in an update?

Actually Howard, it matters quite a bit. I could not work without Scene Detect. David is correct that it is quite surprising.
The simple solution is to use a free program "HDVSplit". A better solution is to purchase Aspect HD and use the included HDLink to Scene detect for you.
Using Scene Detect eliminates much of the audio slippage caused by broken GOPs.

  • No Scene Detect option in HDV project only SD

When capturing my HD footages, I've noticed that the scene detect option is grayed out but when I downconvert the HD footage and capture into a SD project, the option then becomes avail.
Does this feature only work in SD projects?

If you use HDVSplit, a free program, you will have scene detect.
Personally, I prefer using Cineform Aspect HD for other reasons besides the fact it has scene detect, but it is only fair to mention HDVSplit.

  • Clarification on Scene Detect?

I can't find any clarification on what all connections enable Scene Detect to work.  Is it only via Firewire (IEEE 1394) with the HDV/DV formats, or will it work through SDI/HD-SDI?  In my particular case, I'd like to connect my Sony DSR-1500A DVCAM deck via its add-on SDI board to the HD-SDI input on a Blackmagic Design DeckLink Studio card.  (We don't have that SDI board for the Sony decks yet; right now we're using analog component connections because the Blackmagic card, when installed, disables the use of the computer's built-in Firewire for capture/output.  Obviously there is no Scene Detect with analog connections.)  Computer platform is Windows 7 64-bit Edition.  Blackmagic Design had no definitive answer for me, and said for me to contact Adobe.

    Harm,
Thank you.  My reasons for wanting to go with SDI are not really related to a quality increase (or perceived quality increase); it's more from a practical connection standpoint.  Since Firewire/IEEE-1394 is not supported by the BM card, and the analog component connection takes away video monitoring capability on the Sony DSR-1500A deck -- there are exactly 3 BNC connections for output, configured in the menu for either component, Y/C, or composite, but not simultaneously -- the only remaining option is SDI, which is widely regarded as the professional way to connect digital components anyway.

If the deck outputs the date/timestamp over SDI, it may be possible to use scenedetection if BM supports that, but chances are that since it is already on tape and compression has already taken place, there is no benefit at all from using SDI. You are maybe better off with regular capturing, since the signal has been compressed and nothing will get that back to better quality. SDI is great for live recording, but once recorded on tape, you are out of luck.

  • My scene detect in Premiere cs3 on WIN 7, 64 bit is ghosted and can't turn on

I have my premiere cs3 on two computers one with xp pro and the other with win 7 64bit and I can't activate my scene detect on either operating system, I read manual and did some on line searches but it assumes in the tutorials it is already active. Am I doing something stupid or is there a way to turn it on
    Joan

Yeah, sorry I should have been more specific.  There is no way in Premiere to split it, which still amazes me.  HDV split works great though.  I just noticed the name of the OP, you would think that they would know that....

  • Scene Detect and Separate Files on OSX

I am trying to find a way to save my scene detected clips as individual files instead of subclips. I'm obviously using OSX. Is there a way to accomplish this in the capture settings or once the master clip has been made? If neither of these are possible is their an easy way to import or pull a subclip into After Effects?
I ask because I am used to the PC way and have gotten used to it and found it very simple to remove junk clips.
Adobe, why is this different on each platform?
    Thanks for the help!

I wonder if this isn't another QuickTime "feature". Avid (which is more-or-less a QuickTime app, even on Windows) and I believe FCP act the same way when it comes to capturing DV media from tape. Scene detection is performed, but in the case of either, a captured clip is not broken up into individual files. Instead, subclips are created and/or markers are placed in the captured clip to delineate scene changes.
I've never seen such behavior with an app that is more AVI-centric, like PPro (on Windows, anyway) and Edius.
Not the answer you're necessarily looking for, I realize...

  • Scene Detection during capture

I will try to keep this simple. Here's some background on what I am trying to accomplish. I shoot sporting events for recruitment videos. During the games I start and stop recording on each play. So at the end of the day I end up with 100+ clips for each game/match. During capture I need my software to be able to detect each scene which saves me valuable time in post. I can quickly scrub each clip and decide what to dump. I shoot in HD(HDV) because the resolution allows me to do much more during post.
Premiere Pro does not detect HD(HDV) scenes as every other NLE I have seen does. So my first question is why not? I hate having to use multiple NLEs/programs when the Adobe Suite of programs should do the job.
Without getting into why, I currently capture on a Macbook because iMovie and/or Finalcut will detect scenes. Then I use my Mac OS copy of Premiere Pro (CS3) to edit since it does allow me to import .mov files BUT I have CS4 Production Premium on a much more powerful PC which I would love to use BUT I cannot import the .mov files I have captured on my Macbook to PP CS4 on the PC ... I get a codec missing or unavailable message. Which I don't understand when Adobe publishes .mov files as being supported under the windows version. I contacted Adobe Support and was told the Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) is not supported. How can that be? Isn't that Apples standard Codec? Sorry for the long winded post but there has to be a workaround or something simple I am missing. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Ok I have confirmed that setting the capture codec to ProRes422 when capturing via Finalcut Pro 6 on my Macbook Pro will allow me to import the same clips to Premiere Pro CS4 on my windows vista PC. Thanks again Colin!
Why? Because I use my Macbook Pro on location. I film sporting events which I have found works best in post if I start/stop recording after each play. I end up with 100 or so clips. I am making highlight videos so it is easier to scrub through small clips to determine what I am going to use than it is to scrub through the same 2 hour footage to tag in/out points. To get the clips I need a capture program that can detect scenes. Finalcut does this automatically during capture. I prefer to do all of my post in Premiere Pro but it will not detect scenes with HD/HDV footage. Finally when I get the footage home I have a much more powerful PC to edit and render out and being able to just transfer my .mov clips from the MacBook to the PC for import to PP is awesome.

  • How to disable scene detection in auto analyzer?

I thought I saw this setting once, but now can't find it.

    You can't....
You can selectively disable the filters, the ones that each clip will be analyzed for. But scene detect seems to be a must-do before the analysis begins. Maybe for performance reasons, and for accuracy of the filters in each of the smaller clips.
Say if you have a 10 min clip. The first 2 mins has some shake in it. But the rest of the clip does not. If the scenes were not analyzed, the complete clip will not have a "shake" tag associated with it (Purely because 2 mins is too small a duration compared to 10 mins). Now if the scenes have been detected, the first two mins could be a part of a scene and that "shake" tag will be meaningful for this scene alone and not for the full clip. Hence the accuracy. Similarly for all tags and all scenes within the clip. To make meaningful analysis, a smaller clip is always more meaningful rather than a big clip.
I agree with them if this is the design criteria they used when designing the feature.
    Hope I was clear.

  • Capture with Scene Detect: Clip Name Keeps Changing

I am editing weddings and my raw footage is usually on 3 tapes. I capture with Scene Detect checked and I name the clip "Clip", so Premiere labels each clip as Clip 01, Clip 02, Clip 03, etc. But when I put in my 2nd tape, Premiere starts labelling them Clip 01 1, Clip 02 1, Clip 03 1, etc. How can I get Premiere to continue from the last number of the previous tape, (the same way that Scenalyzer does automatically)?

How can I get Premiere to continue from the last number of the previous tape
You can't.  Once you stop capture, PP will always restart the numbering, even if it's from the same tape.
What I do is use Bridge to Batch Rename the clips.

  • SG Scene Detect is a NOP -- how do the sensitivity controls work?

I have a four minute clip that produces a complete flatline in SG Scene Detect.
My guess is that it may have something to do with the content: it is 8mm film partially digitized to HD (i.e. SG/SD is part of the process) so is letterboxed  on L/R... I'm thinking maybe all that black is driving the detector crazy.
In any case, NONE of the documentation I can find gives any hint at all as to what the "sensitivity" controls do. Is there a document anywhere on this?
    What I see for controls:
    - Large arrow (and digits) that can be moved with mouse or shift-mouse (for speed). Default value 2.0
    - If the value is changed, a blank box shows up on lower right. It appears to reset the value.
    - A small square below the line appears to signify nothing, at least for now
    - Tooltip says "Press ctrl to toggle Gang" -- so there's a set of ganged controls somehow
    - The normal slider range is 1.25 to 4.0
    - If I go beyond those values high or low (even negative), two extra markers show below the line, and approach from both ends simultaneously toward the small box
    - Sliding left increases the number without limit (I dragged up to 35 billion). The two lines appear to touch the box at around +130
    - Sliding right decreases the number below zero also without limit. The two lines appear to touch the box at around -130
Pressing 'ctrl' may toggle a Gang but I guess I'm not a Gang Member -- I can't see where the Gang is hiding out
In any case. I'd love to know what these controls do. And I'd love to actually detect a scene in my clip!
    Thoughts?

  • Scene Detect not functioning in Premiere Pro CS6

    Hello all,
Having an issue with Scene Detect not recognizing individual scenes when I Capture HDV footage from my Canon XH series cameras. Tapes just come in as one long file rather than individual scenes. I am using CS6 on my MAC computers (OS 10.7.5 and 10.6.8).
This is baffling as I've captured many tapes from many weddings and have never experienced this problem to this point.
I did reset my cameras to default settings recently but can't seem to find anything that would indicate that causing the issue. However, it is the only change I have made unless a recent Adobe or OS update could have caused the issue?
Your help and knowledge are greatly appreciated!

    Problem solved.
For anyone seeking a possible solution to this simple but incredibly aggravating issue: Make sure your camera's date and time fields are set. Premiere Pro's "Scene Detect" function uses your cameras time signature to differentiate scenes in your captured footage. No time code = no individual scene detection.
When I reset my camera to default settings I erased my time and date fields. I wasn't too worried about it as I typically use these cameras for their HD SDI capability with timecode captured via Tricaster, however this became a frustrating problem when I used the cameras for a recent wedding capture and I now have four long files rather than the intended multiple scenes I need for editing...
Hope this simple discovery makes someone's day a little easier...

  • Premiere Pro CS4: Timecode issues (Scene Detect, Free Run)

    Hi folks,
I am most familiar with Premiere Pro CS3. In the past, I have created multi-camera sequences that are synchronised by timecode. I have been shooting using the Free Run timecode feature across all cameras, as to maintain a sync'd timecode.
Now that I am using Premiere Pro CS4 at work, I am running into a few issues in preserving my timecode values during capture. I have recorded HDV footage using two Sony Z7's. I downconvert the HDV footage into DV upon capturing - this is so that I can use the scene-detect feature, and still supposedly preserve the timecode for each media file. I captured all of the tapes using scene-detect, and the timecode values were correct for each media file captured.
Having saved, closed, and reopened my Premiere Project the next day, the timecode values for the majority of the media files have been reset (ie, they all start at "0:00:00:00". This is very odd! Only a few of the media files have retained their correct timecode values.
Has anyone else experienced this? Could they please shed some light on this problem or quirk? Am I taking the wrong approach in capturing/organising media? I am following the same procedure as I had done in PPro CS3.
I have since deleted the Media Cache/Preview Files, requiring Premiere to re-index, and re-conform the media files. The timecode values are still incorrect. When I select all of my media files and tell them to go 'offline', the correct timecode values re-appear.
    Many thanks for your help,
    Andrew

Does anyone have an answer to this problem?? I think I am having the same problem. I don't have as much experience as the others on the
forum, but basically what I tried to do was filming a multi-camera event in free run timecode, then
captured in HDV split, and assumed I could get Premiere to align the clips accordingly. Anyone have any idea how to do this????
    Any help is appreciated,
    Thanks,
    Aaron

  • Speedgrade crashes every time I use split into clips function as part of scene detection.

Speedgrade CC (latest version) crashes every time I use split into clips function as part of scene detection.
I can use the keyframe function fine, but if i split it into clips it crashes 9 out of 10 times... so to get the job done i simply keep reopening the project, cliping and praying it works, then it crashes.... and i repeat this until it doesnt crash!
File format im using is a 22min long Prores422 HQ 1080 25P file.
Any ideas?.... im guessing im going to get the old "reinstall the software" one first... anything else?
also have issues with Speedgrade just crashing for no good reason at random times while im grading too but ive come to expect that from the buggy software.

I've got several 1080p mov's that have multiple sequences with 20 to 40 minutes a sequence I've regularly run over to Sg from PrPro. Granted, they're pretty straight forward, mostly simple cuts with a few transitions/wipes, no more than 3 video layers a sequence. Only one has any Ae stuff on it, and again, pretty simple.
But as noted, there are those who do programs for broadcast with it ... I'm wishing one would chime in. Maybe shooternz ... I think he does b-cast work. Vastly more experienced than I am, PrPro, Ae, Sg, Audition ... the "suite". There's several others around here, though they tend to 'hang' in the PrPro forum more than here.
