Once rich images in Photoshop now appear flat.

Photos I had previously edited in Photoshop now appear flat in Photoshop, Bridge, Illustrator, Preview, and in the Finder. These same files look good on websites, and also when I drag them into an email.
The Color Settings in Photoshop match the files' color profiles (Adobe RGB).
I had recalibrated the monitor using native gamma and native white point, but the colors don't return to their richness when I go back to the default calibration. Plus, the images still look good on websites and in emails, so I don't know if the screen calibration is the problem.
I feel that I must have made some setting change, but I can't figure out what I need to change back.
I use MAC OS 10.7.5, Creative Suite CS6.
HELP!
Thanks.

It's not entirely clear what you did here. What do you mean by "going back to default calibration"?
Calibration consists of two independent processes - calibration and profiling. Calibration is a modification of the monitor itself, to put it in a somewhat more "ideal" state than it was. Calibration does not have very high precision, and is not part of the color management chain.
Color management enters with the second part, the monitor profile. The profile is built after the calibration is finished. It is a complete description of the monitor in its calibrated state. The standard color management chain kicks in at this point: Document profile (source) is converted to the monitor profile (destination).
IOW, display color management relies on the calibration being already in place. So if you change the calibration, you also need to make a new profile to describe the new state of the display. If you just change the calibration, but use the same profile, color managed applications will send the wrong numbers to the display and all bets are off.

Perhaps you don't want to hear from me, I don't know.
I'll answer just this one little question.  Try to get your mind around what color management does, I promise it does make sense (outside of unexplained problems on particular computers).
You want to save your web image with the sRGB profile embedded because some Internet browsers are color managed, and with an embedded profile it's more likely someone will see your image colors just as you intended.
The assumption is that a lowly windows user with a cheap monitor and Internet Explorer will be seeing any image you save as "roughly" sRGB anyway.  Tagging the image with sRGB only affects those with color-managed browsers.
You're looking for the most possible consistency for the viewing audience.

Hi Russ, Thank you for your reply!
    System Spec:
    2x2.26 Ghz QUAD-CORE
    12 GB RAM 1066 MHz DDR3
I've stored the library in HARD DISK which is installed inside my computer (1 TB capacity) and different from my hard disk in which I've installed all my applications (600 GB capacity).
I've installed FCP since 2001, bought FCP X in 2012: never had a problem. Yesterday I was editing my video of my last vacations (in California!) and I have updated FCP X, downloading FCP X 10.1.1: then the problem!
Strange is the fact that I've just tried to export a short project, I can see the final product quite well.
What is impossible is playing the clips within Final Cut: they are jumpimg, moving, presenting some frame in green or red ...
    Everything all right in iMovie.
I've just checked the RAM: 9GB out of 12 GB is busy, could this be the problem?
Motion is very slow: for 20 sec of project, it takes minutes to play. And once again, if you finalize the projet and export it in Quicktime, you can see it correctly.
I do hope you may suggest something, I'm getting crazy!
    Thank you in adavance

  • Image appears flat when published from Lightroom 4 to Smugmug but not when exported as jpgs, help?

I have searched the forums and the internet to no avail, I cannot figure out why an image I am publishing directly to smugmug via LR 4 appears flat. My guess is it has to do with the color space since upon export as a JPG the image contrast appears fine. I shoot camera RAW but copy as DNG upon import, I cannot locate color settings aside from the external editing options. Why is this happening? I would love to continue uploading/publishing directly from lightroom to smugmug.
Here is a link to the flat image uploaded via the smugmug plug in

No, I'm not sure links works in an interactive PDF (it has SWF-player embedded).
The default slide quality since 6.1 is now Optimized, I have been pleading for that for reasons like what happened with you. If you use 24-bit graphics (maybe with transparent pixels), or want crisp text, it is logical that you cannot achieve that with 8-bit quality. But not every CP-user is knowledgeable about that kind of graphics stuff.

  • Photoshop saves images darker than they appear in-program

I am using Photoshop CS6 64-bit version, and I also had this problem with the previous Photoshop CS5 (64-bit aswell). (Windows 7 64-bit)
I've had this problem for a very long time and I've been looking for answers for tons of times however this time around I really want it fixed because it is very annoying.
    Whenever I save most images that I've edited or created in Photoshop, they get saved as darker than they are in the program;
It shouldn't be a monitor problem. I have two monitors and it occurs on both. When I save the image and open it on the same monitor for comparison, it is darker than it was in photoshop.
If I use a screen-cap tool like Gyazo directly in photoshop to upload a screenshot of the image to the web, it appears just as light as it should (I am not sure if it's 100% as light as it should, however it's definitely way better and lighter than saving the image then uploading it).
Here's a comparison. On the left it is the wallpaper opened in Photoshop. On the right side I have the image saved as a .PNG and shown using the default Windows Photo Viewer:
    http://i.gyazo.com/02f434cce077a672e0169f7c2875b3ef.png
You can see that there is a clear difference, and that it's way darker than it should be. It pretty much ruins the image in this case due to how dark it gets.
(Yes, I've tried saving a very wide range of image filetypes with no success)
Continuing on the monitor/screen-cap part above... So logically there should be some issues with the actual saving of the image in Photoshop. Am I using sRGB? Yes. I have checked all the settings in the color settings countless times to make sure it's right. I also tried playing a bit around with them to no avail. Here is a picture of my color settings (Ctrl+Shift+K): http://i.gyazo.com/b3f993b61e2e9c701d0820886670da36.png
I have both tried to reset my settings and re-installed Photoshop. As I also said I've had this problem with an earlier version of Photoshop aswell. I have tried to convert color profiles before I save the image and I've made sure it's saved using sRGB.
I'm convinced Photoshop is saving the image wrongly or something due to the screen-cap case.
If anyone has any leads on how to go about fixing this then please speak out. If you require any more information about my hardware/software or what I've tried, just ask.
    Thanks!

This has nothing to do with Photoshop. The problem is that Windows Photo Viewer displays the image incorrectly. Apparently it's choking on the display profile, while Photoshop manages to work with it.
Both applications are fully color managed and should display identically. If they don't the problem is nearly always the display profile.
Try to set sRGB as default display profile in Windows. If the difference disappears you know you have a bad profile and need to replace it. If you don't have a calibrator to make a new profile, just use sRGB for now. Manufacturer-supplied profiles are notoriously defective in any number of ways and should be avoided.

If the "it" refers to a compressed (zipped) spreadsheet that you downloaded, the ".ods" extension is used by LibreOffice and probably OpenOffice (which are free versions of MS Office) for spreadsheets, which would suggest that wherever you're getting that "Excel" file from has switched to one of those programs. I've tried opening an .ods file from LibreOffice using MS Office 2013 for Windows and it does open though with a warning that some things have been changed. I don't know if Office for Mac can normally open .ods files. But if your need is to just open .ods files, take a look at LibreOffice.

I created an image in Photoshop and saved it as the PSD file. Now when I try and open it it says it is not compatible with my version. How could this be when I created it in this version?

That depends on why it won't open.  Most of the time it means the file is corrupted and unlikely to be recovered. If you saved it right after adding or copying a LOT of layers - then it might just be the layer limit and we can attempt to recover it.

Looks like you have a video card driver problem causing the color management shaders to return bad results.
You can either set the GPU mode to Basic, or update the video card drivers from the GPU maker's website.

  • VBA code to import scanned images into Photoshop CS2 with TWAIN

    Hi,
I have to develop a solution that automates the scanning of an image using the TWAIN driver interface. Once scanned, the image appears as a new document in Photoshop where it will be further processed using VBScript scripts.
    The solution so far :
Using the freeware 'EZTW32.dll' (copied into C:\WINDOWS\System\), I am able to open the TWAIN scan dialogue on screen, using the function 'TWAIN_AcquireToClipboard(Me.Hwnd, nPixTypes) from the 'EZTW32' dll.
Once the image is scanned, the TWAIN driver is automatically closed, leaving the scanned image on the Windows clipboard.
I then launch Photoshop CS2 using a shell code :
(It is important that Photoshop runs minimized)
    Dim strPathname As String
    Dim lngShellReturn As Long
    Dim appRef As Object
    Dim newDocRef
    strPathname = "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Photoshop.exe"
    lngShellReturn = Shell(strPathname, vbMinimizedNoFocus)
    Set appRef = CreateObject("Photoshop.Application")
When Photoshop is running, then a new document is created and the scanned image is pasted into the document from the Windows clipboard...
    Set newDocRef = Documents.Add(8.268, 11.693, 600, "New Doc")
    newDocRef.Paste
OK, this works up to a point. The newly scanned image appears automatically in Photoshop.
The big problem is that when the user makes a change in resolution or draws a selection box in the TWAIN dialog, this data is not recovered from TWAIN, so the image size parameters in the new document cannot be set.
A beter solution would be to write code that emulates the menu commands in Photoshop CS2:
File -> Import -> [Current Scanner]
that launches the TWAIN driver for the current scanner (the code must close TWAIN immediately after scanning). In this case, the resolution and image selection parameters are also imported into the new document.
I am currently refering to the Photoshop CS2 SDK. Do I need to request the Advanced SDK ?
Once beyond this point, then I think I can continue the image processing routines using VBScript as per the SDK.
Any help or other pointers to the TWAIN problem would be VERY APPRECIATED !
    Lars

PLEASE IGNORE MY PREVIOUS POST !
I have now fully resolved the TWAIN problem. It works perfectly and is very robust. I am now continuing with the batch image processing for the newly scanned images using the Photoshop CS2 SDK scripting documents, that I find very detailed, well written, and VERY helpful :)
    Peace and love,
    Lars

  • Exporting still image - not all effects appearing

I have created an image in Photoshop but wanted to get the shadow/lighting/depth effects from After Effects. So I imported the layers, got it all set up with lighting/different depths/shadows/etc. So now I'm going to render out a single frame so I now have a TIFF/photoshop/JPEG. I go through the steps: COMPOSITION>SAVE AS.... I get the file and every time I open up the flat file in photoshop, the shadows that were great in After Effects have now become flat black shapes.
So I lose the effects I created in After Effects....... does anyone know how to keep these when I render it out for a still image?

Sorry! This is my first time using this form so had no idea.
Here is a screenshot of the issue:
LEFT - how it looks in AE
RIGHT - how it looks in PS
I have tried all different kinds of settings and rendering a still frame in Photoshop Sequence, TIFF Sequence, JPEG Sequence. The shadows just aren't appearing the same. It kept the correct light source on each of the items but the shadows just appear solid instead of blended.

I need your help with a decision to use iPhoto.  I have been a PC user since the mid 1980’s and more recently have used ACDSee to manage my photo images and Photoshop to edit them.  I have used ProShow Gold to create slideshows.  I am comfortable with my own folder and file naming conventions. I currently have over 23,000 images of which around 60% are scans going back 75 years.  Since I keep a copy of the originals, the storage requirements for over 46,000 images is huge.  180GB plus.
I now have a Macbook Pro and will add an iMac when the new models arrive.  For my photos, I want to stay with Photoshop which also gives me the Bridge.  The only obvious reason to use iPhoto is to take advantage of Faces and the link to iMovie to make slideshows.  What am I missing and is using iPhoto worth the effort?
If I choose to use iPhoto, I am not certain whether I need to load the originals and the edited versions. I suspect that just the latter is sufficient.  If I set PhotoShop as my external editor, I presume that iPhoto will keep track of all changes moving forward.  However, over 23,000 images in iPhoto makes me twitchy and they are appear hidden within iPhoto.  In the past, I have experienced syncing problems with, and database errors in, large databases.  If I break up the images into a number of projects, I loose the value of Faces reaching back over time.
Some guidance and insight would be appreciated.  I have a number of Faces questions which I will save for later.

Bridge and Photoshop is a common file-based management system. (Not sure why you'd have used ACDSEE as well as Bridge.) In any event, it's on the way out. You won't be using it in 5 years time.
Up to this the lack of processing power on your computer left no choice but to organise this way. But file based organisation is as sensible as organising a Shoe Warehouse based on the colour of the boxes. It's also ultimately data-destructive.
Modern systems are Database driven. Files are managed, Images imported, virtual versions, lossless processing and unlimited editing are the way forward.
For a Photographer Photoshop is overkill. It's an enormously powerful app, a staple of the Graphic Designers' trade. A Photographer uses maybe 15% to 20% of its capability.
Apps like iPhoto, Lightroom, Aperture are the way forward - for photographers. There's the 20% of Photoshop that shooters actually use, coupled with management and lossless processing. Pop over to the Aperture or Lightroom forums (on the Adobe site) and one comment shows up over and over again... "Since I started using Aperture/ Lightroom I hardly ever use Photoshop any more..." and if there is a job that these apps can do, then the (much) cheaper Elements will do it.
The change is not easy though, especially if you have a long-standing and well thought out filing system of your own. The first thing I would strongly advise is that you experiment before making any decisions. So I would create a Library, import 300 or 400 shots and play. You might as well do this in iPhoto to begin with - though if you’re a serious hobbyist or a Pro then you'll find yourself looking further afield pretty soon. iPhoto is good for the family snapper, taking shots at birthdays and sharing them with friends and family.
Next: If you're going to successfully use these apps you need to make a leap: Your files are not your Photos.
The illustration I use is as follows: In my iTunes Library I have a file called 'Let_it_Be_The_Beatles.mp3'. So what is that, exactly? It's not the song. The Beatles never wrote an mp3. They wrote a tune and lyrics. They recorded it and a copy of that recording is stored in the mp3 file. So the file is just a container for the recording. That container is designed in a specific way attuned to the characteristics and requirements of the data. Hence, mp3.
Similarly, that Jpeg is not your photo, it's a container designed to hold that kind of data. iPhoto is all about the data and not about the container. So, regardless of where you choose to store the file, iPhoto will manage the photo, edit the photo, add metadata to the Photo but never touch the file. If you choose to export - unless you specifically choose to export the original - iPhoto will export the Photo into a new container - a new file containing the photo.
When you process an image in iPhoto the file is never touched, instead your decisions are recorded in the database. When you view the image then the Master is presented with these decisions applied to it. That's why it's lossless. You can also have multiple versions and waste no disk space because they are all just listings in the database.
These apps replace the Finder (File Browser) for managing your Photos. They become the Go-To app for anything to do with your photos. They replace Bridge too as they become a front-end for Photoshop.
So, want to use a photo for something - Export it. Choose the format, size and quality you want and there it is. If you're emailing, uploading to websites then these apps have a "good enough for most things" version called the Preview - this will be missing some metadata.
So it's a big change from a file-based to Photo-based management, from editing files to processing Photos and it's worth thinking it through before you decide.

  • Cannot open multiple images in Photoshop

I recently purchased a new laptop (OS: Windows 7 Enterprise, 32 GB RAM) and installed CS5 on it.  All of the applications work well except for Photoshop.
At first Photoshop would load correctly but crash when I tried to Save As.  I deleted the preference file upon startup and that fixed the problem.
Now every time I open more than one image in photoshop, my screen goes completely black. It doesn't matter whether I try to open them sequentially or all at once.  The most I can have open is 2 images.  When trying to open a 3rd, or when selecting more than one file to open all at once, the screen goes completely black. Eventually the screen does come back on, with the error that my AMD driver stopped responding and recovered.  But now Photoshop is frozen and I have to close Photoshop through the Task Manager. My video card is AMD FirePro M6100 and has been checked for driver updates.
Do we know what could be the source of this problem?  And how can I fix it, I often need >2 images open at once.
    Thanks!

  • Open image in Photoshop

I want my images to open in Photoshop CS when I double click on the file, but even when I've been working on them, and saved them as Photoshop files they just open the application, not the image. There's a brief flash of an image but it never opens. I don't appear to have iPhoto, so a previously suggested answer appears not to help, and have just loaded Tiger and its latest updates (prior to re-loading Photoshop). The only way I can currently open images in Photoshop is thru the tedious "Open" menu within Photoshop, followed by a trawl through the file structure, or via the application's own file browser.

    Hi Fearless,
How did you reload PS? do you reinstall it?
If you didn't reinstall it then might have to install it again.
Here is some old information I had copied and pasted
Try this suggestion I copied and pasted from MacFixIt first
"Photoshop CS: Fix for file opening problem Yesterday we reported that since installing Mac OS X 10.4, Photoshop CS refuses to open any new files or create any new documents, reporting a "program error" when one tries to do so. Our previously reported workaround involved re-installing Photoshop CS, but MacFixIt reader Bryan Schappel now offers a faster solution:
"This happens because the Archive and Install option does not copy over a necessary folder for Photoshop. The critical folder is called 'ScriptingAdditions' and is stored in the main Library folder. This folder contains one file 'Adobe Unit Types' that makes Photoshop open files that have been double-clicked or dragged to the PS icon in the Dock.
"Simply move this folder (and file) from the 'Previous System' backup to the Library folder, relaunch Photoshop and all is well again. No need to completely re-install.""
I copied an pasted instead of putting the link in because it is not on the front page and you would have to search around to find it. Hope it is ok to do that here.
