One 30" Apple Monitor shared between two Macs with a switcher Possible ?

I have a G5 Dual processor and a new Pro mac. I was thinking of having two 30'' monitors with the new pro but would love to know if its possible to share one of these monitors with the old G5 via some sort of switch box ? - The G5 will be set up as a node for Logic and at odd times as a stand a lone machine so It would be good to have the option of using one of the two monitors . ( I don't have desk space for a third monitor ) -- what's the story ?

Yes. Look for a dual-link DVI switch or KVM, such as

  • Sharing between two macs with one user account?

Is it possible to connect two macs to share documents and music if they are both logged into the same user account?
I recently bought a Mac Mini and when setting it up, I transferred everything from my Macbook Pro to it, including my user profile which I now also use on the Mini.
Since setting up the Mini, I've been using both machines so the content on both is no longer identical. There have been occassions where I have wanted to transfer something from the MBP to the Mini or vice-versa over wi-fi and have encountered problems. I suspect this is because I am using the same user account and they get confused.
I don't need the two macs to be identical in their content, however there are times when I want to share or quickly transfer music, documents or Garageband files from one to another. Would I be better off setting up different profiles for the Mini and the MBP to achieve this? Is there a better way to do what I'm trying to do?

Could you please explain, what kind of problems exactly you encountered? Error messages? Corrupted files? And why do you think the problem is caused by the same user profiles?
Like markwmsn I have no problem with sharing using the same account name on all my macs. Only since upgrading to Mt. Lion I usually use AirDrop to send single files. That saves the trouble to copy the files to a public folder.
Do both your macs support Air Drop?

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico, Spanish is my native tongue. I do not speak English very well, however, I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
iTunes content can be commingled in the iTunes library on a computer and synced to iOS devices. The computer must be authorized to use the content from the respective Apple IDs in the iTunes Store menu.

  • Cannot use File Sharing Between Two Macs Running tiger

I have a G3 Desktop and a Platinum powerbook connected wirelessly using an Airport Extreme. I used to be able to easily share files between the two Macs but since upgrading to Tiger on both machines and loading the latest software upgrades and Airport firmware, running Disk Utility, setting preferences to turn on AppleTalk and file sharing, file sharing does not work. It worked one time after downloading the new Airport firmware but now I cannot find the other computer on the Airport network. There are only two computers on the Airport network. Does anybody have any ideas?

Problem solved by reading the reply to dkolenda's post earlier today. I turned off UDP traffic blocking inthe firewall settings and now both computers can see each other and share files.
    Thanks!

  • Internet sharing between two macs. was working - now stopped?

    Hello
i would really appreciate some help on this and wondered if it is common as i have not found any info online about others having this difficultly.
Basically at my uni wireless routers are not allowed, having two macs a macbook pro and a macbook i decided to share the internet from one to the other.
This was perfect at first, i set it to share from ethernet to airport with either a 5 digit password on 40 or 13 digit on 128 bit. I even managed to connect an android phone as well as an iphone. Then for no reason i can understand it has stopped working.
the phones both work fine, but neither mac will share its internet to the other. The airport will connect to the others and i will get a green connected light however no page will open.
Please take a little time to help me!
I am going absolutely crazy trying every logical resolution and i have to wait until wednesday evening for apple to call me back
thank you so much in advance

    Hi,
I seem to have 'solved' the problem by turning off the firewall on my G5. Entourage is on my wife's laptop. However, I originally had the Personal File Sharing and Personal Web Sharing boxes allowed with the rest of the firewall on and this enabled my wife to access the web but not Entourage. It was only when I turned the firewall off completely that she was able to use Entourage OK. Is there another box that I should check that would let her use Entourage without me keeping the whole of the firewall off ( its not obvious which one to set )?
    Thanks again.

  • Sharing a hard drive between two Macs with Time Machine

can I use the same hard drive to back up two different Macs with Time machine? I'm ok with hot swapping the cables.

Yes, but TM, Leopard and external drives are not OK with hot-swapping. Never unplug a drive without properly ejecting it first.
Each computer will have it's own backup folder on the drive and each computer will recognize its own backup folder. There is no limit other than HD space on how many computers can be backed up on an external drive.

  • HT1203 Why is it that music cannot be shared between two people with apple devices over wifi or Bluetooth ?

With other mobile devices it has always been easy to transfer music from one friend to the the other via Bluetooth so why is so hard to transfer music from one apple iPhone to another via wifi or Bluetooth ?

It would seem that Apple have chosen not to implement general file sharing over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth as a security measure. That said. you have no rights to transfer your music (licensed to you) to your friend. They should purchase (licence) their own copy.

  • Microsoft files Read-only when sharing between two Macs

I'm trying to share Excel files between my Macbook and my iMac. The files are located on my macbook and I've given read/write permission to the folder containing the files. When I try to open the files on my iMac they open as read only. This happens with Excel, Word and Power Point files.
How do I configure the file sharing so I can open Microsoft files without them being Read only.
I'm using Office:mac 2004 and both the Macbook and iMac are running OS X (10.5.6)

  • File Sharing between two macs

Hello and happy new year everyone!
I have a MBP running Snow Leopard and i recently bought an iMac running Lion. I would like to set up a network at home to easily transfer my data. What i did was to enable file sharing in both machines (connected to the same wifi network). My problem is that the two machines never appear on the Finder left bar "Shared" folder. But they are actually connected! I can access my iMac for example, indirectly, if i enter its local address on safari (afp://192.168.1.19 ).
To sum up, this is not so convenient to do each time and i would like my machines to appear on the finder. Any ideas why that doesnt happen?
Thanks a lot for your help
    Dimitris

I recommend that you append a suffix to your User Name so that the OS can differentiate between the two computers ie Name1_A, Name1_B.
I maintain 50 iMacs/eMacs in a High School Video Production class.
The Teacher's Name was the same on ALL computers for Admin account. When I setup an Airport Wireless Server the Network could not recognize the different computers for Program/File Sharing until I renamed each computer's Admin Account with a different name - Teacher Name_A to Teacher Name_ZZ.
Once this was done then the Network could recognize the different computers and open the Program/File Sharing items for each computer.

  • Setting up file sharing between two Macs

Just bought a new MBP. My wife will use the old MBP. Both running 10.9.4
Hers shows under ‘Shared’ in my Finder & mine in hers.
On clicking ‘Connect As’ from either laptop we are asked for a password.
I must be overlooking something basic, but for the life of me cannot work out how to set the password.
I have been into System Preferences/Sharing preferences & tried to add her as a user  & vice versa. I can add each of us to the other’s list of users, but when either of us tries to connect & are prompted to enter a password, the password is rejected. Like wise if I go into File sharing ‘Options’, & find the user name in the account list (only he & me) on hers I am unticked & on mine she is unticked.
When I tick either box I am prompted again to enter a password (for SMB). Again on entering the password it is rejected.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks.

MrHoffman, by ‘log directly’ do you mean can I sit at my wife’s (or my) mac, type in the login passwords at the login screens & gain access? If so the answer is yes.
These are the same passwords I have been trying to use to log in to file sharing from the connect as box in Finder.  Same result both ways. Password rejected/password input box shakes.
    Yep.  That was the test.
Launch Console.app from Applications > Utilities on the target Mac, and then see if there are any messages logged when the incoming Finder connection to that target Mac fails.  (Please don't post more than a dozen or two lines and definitely please don't dump hundreds of lines of console output here.  Remove repeating blocks, and — if you do post that data here — please check for any confidential or sensitive information before posting it.)
Also, if there are any add-on "anti-malware" or "anti-virus" tools, or I/O "enhancement" tools, or tools that claim to "optimize", "protect", "clean" or "tweak" your Mac, please remove all of those.   Use the tool-specific procedures to remove those.  If you're not sure, download and run and post the output from Etrecheck, and we'll have a look at the software configuration.  (Etrecheck also tries not to display anything sensitive, but do review that output before posting it here.)

  • File sharing between two Macs wirelessly

Hi I want to share files over my local network via a WI-FI internet connection that both my Macs are connected to. I read some blog posts about how to turn on file sharing on both machines in Network Prefs but still the finder sidebar does not show the other Mac. What am I doing wrong?
    cheers
    Simon

On the Mac that you want to share, turn on File Sharing in +System Preferences > Sharing+
Also make sure that your firewall is not blocking incoming connections. Check this in +System Prefs > Security > Firewall > Advanced+
Then you should be able to log on from another Mac by doing +Go > Connect to Server > Browse+ This will enable you to log on to the Mac whose file sharing is turned on.
If you want +both Macs+ to share their files, and allow each Mac to log on to the other, then you have to turn on File Sharing and check your firewall settings on both Macs

  • Screen sharing between two macs

    Hi,
I am using my laptop to view my desktop's screen which has both a 30" and 17" monitor. The text is unreadable because it's so tiny when scaled down to fit on my monitor, so I have to click the button with the 4 arrows that force the display to be the actual size. However, the problem is, the window auto-scrolls when your mouse is in the outer area of the window, and this is the most annoying behavior I have ever experienced, especially since there are scroll bars in the window-- and I cannot find a way to disable this feature.. Is it possible??

  • LIGHTROOM BACK UP - SHARING BETWEEN TWO MACS...

    Hi
I use LR on my macmini but want to be able to access it from my macbook whilst on the move. Is there any way that the back up from the mac could be opened on my macbook? or will it always require the actual files to be present on the macbook also. I guess Im asking if theres any way to link the image folder directly to lightroom???
    thanks
    chris

I keep my main library on my MAC Pro but take my Macbook Pro on the road with me. I find that exporting the last few months of images as a Catalog works best for me. I do need to copy over my presets and templates but these are pretty small files.
Any photos I take on the trip get added onto this catalog. When I return I export only the new photos as a new catalog and import this into the main catalog. This means all my keyword structure plus any develop adjustments are preserved. Best way to transfer is using target disk mode and a firewire cable.
