One Bad File killing iPhoto and Mac

By opening the contents of the iPhoto library package, I have determined that a single image file is causing my Mac to crash. If I try to copy it - everything freezes. Worse, if I open a folder it is in (even with previewing off) the Mac locks up. I don't mind losing one photo, but I hate losing the whole folder).
How do I erase a single file without being able to see it in the Finder? Is there a terminal command? A tool like Cocktail?
THANKS IN ADVANCE, DON

Don:
By folder are you referring to an Event or Album? If it's an Album and you know which Event the photo is in try clicking just once on the Event photo (in the event mode) without opening it and type Command+Delete. That will move all of the photos in that event to the trash where you can delete them.
Otherwise, rebuild the library as follows: launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options. *BUT make a temporary backup copy of the library first.* If that doesn't help try using iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild the library like this:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. Report back on how long it took and how many photos you have in the library so we can give other users an idea of how long it may take.
This method creates a new library and leaves the original one untouched in case the results are not what you want.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

For your addressbook, export the files to vCard on the PowerMac, then bring them over to your Mac Pro. For your iPhoto, copy the Users -> yourname -> Pictures folder to your Desktop on the Mac Pro, and open iPhoto on the Mac Pro holding the command and option keys.  Select the library file from that Pictures folder and open it.  It should import all the pictures into iPhoto as part of the rebuild process.  Other PowerPC to Intel migration issues are covered here: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2295

  • Sharing files between users and macs

My husband and I share an iMac. I have a MBA for traveling and my husband a PC laptop (though he rarely uses for private stuff). We both have iPhones.
We are looking for a way to:
    - Share our photos (we don't use iPhoto) and some files. We would like to have this in one shared folder, that we can access from both accounts in the iMac, the MBA and ideally (though not a must) the PC and iPhones. We would both need to have admin rights to edit documents, etc.
    - Have access to all the information in my account on the iMac from the MBA. Ideally, same thing for his and the PC.
    - Have access to all the data remotely when traveling.
    - Have all the data backed up locally (we already have a cloud backup, but we'd like to have a local backup too as it's easier and quicker to access)
We have read a lot about configuration, NAS, time capsule... but we get more and more confused, as we are obviously no tech experts.
Dropbox is not our preferred choice. We already have a cloud backup system. We'd rather have the files stored and accessed locally for everyday use.
Using a NAS to store shared folders and backup the rest sounds good, but they either seem very complicated to set up, or they have mixed reviews in terms of stability, especially to access files remotely.
Timecapsule seems easier and more straightforward, but I'm not sure it would solve the "sharing files between users and macs with admin rights"? It seems to be more focused on backing up the main drive and then providing access to the backed up files. (Though I might be completely mistaken!)
We just can't manage to have one shared folder between both accounts in the iMac. We need to grant admin rights document by document. We don't manage to make it work automatically so we both have one folder to access with full rights for all the contents inside it. And this seems to me like something that should easily be done...?
Any help, advice, proposals... would be greatly appreciated!!!

Move any file you want to the other user to access to the Shared Folder. Anything you put in that folder is available to all users.
    The shared folder is here:
Macintosh HD > Users > Shared

  • How to share files between pc and mac via external hard drive

how can i share my files(mp3,mp4,documents) from my harddisk with mac. i am a new mac user and i have a harddisk of NTFS format(as i was a pc user).I learned that mac supports FAT32 format and therefore i can't write data on my external hard drive.
but, reading a section of OSX yosemite(under compatibility) it is said that now we can easily share files between pc and mac.
So please suggest me easier way that how can i share files between macs and pc as my friends uses pc and in future i really want to share my data with them without any hustle and i dont wanna loose my data in future

You can format the HDD to a common one like ExFAT or Fat32 but a reformat will delete all data off of the HDD.
Your other option is to use a third party software such as Paragon or Tuxera that will allow you to write to a NFTS formatted HDD.
    Ciao.

  • Does anyone know if there is a way to share files between Mavericks and Mac OS 9.1 operating system?

Does anyone know if there is a way to share files between Mavericks and Mac OS 9.1 operating system? When I try to connect from my iMac I get a window that says "The version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported." Is there a work-around to this problem or is it just not possible? It would be largly appriciated for a solutin beings my business is a small town newspaper, and we have some important files on the older computer that need to be acessed daily.

Actually to share files between OS 8-9 and OS X, all versions, is quite easy from what I read. Look here for some details.
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20003464-263.html
    And here.
    https://www.google.com/search?q=file+sharing+Mac+OS+9.x&oq=file+sharing+Mac+OS+9 .x&aqs=chrome..69i57.20706j0j1&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
Or since both OS 9 and OS X can do SMB Windows sharing you could use that protocol to share files from one to the other.
Doesn't really matter what OS you are using. Mac OS/OS X shar files with Windows computers of all types and versions of Windows so the same applies for the different versions of Mac OS/OS X.
Each Operating System takes care of reading and writing files to there respective file formats of the hard drives so that does not have to be the same. They both just have to be able to do Ethernet with the same files sharing protocol.

I have a document made up of separate PDF files which reside in a folder and are linked to each other via hyperlinks. Each pdf file is set to open with bookmarks displayed, however if I link from one PDF file to another and use the "Previous View" button to navigate back to my starting point the bookmarks are replaced by "page thumbnails". Is there anyway to stop this from happening?

    Hi Pusman,
While setting up the links, if you choose to open the file in a new window then you won't face this issue, then you can simply switch to the previous file and bookmark view will remain as it is.
Does that helps with your query?

  • Even via time machine the new osx lion has deleted all my latest files in iPhoto and will only revert back to an old 2009 backup?

even via time machine the new osx lion has deleted all my latest files in iPhoto and will only revert back to an old 2009 backup?... Help?!

Have you verified that the original files are missing from the Originals/Masters folder?  There are time when the library might appear empty due to a damaged database file but still has the files.  If you can open the library package via the Finder to see if the files are really missing or just can't be seen by iPhoto there are fixes you can try.
If the files are there make a temporary, backup copy of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Moving location of referenced files in iPhoto and impact on books etc.?

I'm fairly new to iPhoto and was wondering if someone could help me with this question. I imported a number of folders of pictures into iPhoto as referenced and not into the iPhoto library itself. Now I would like to change the location of these referenced files and/or import them into the iPhoto library itself. Is this possible in iPhoto? Can I for example move the folders and then re-link within iPhoto? Also, will I loose the link to calenders and books that I've created if I was to just delete everything and re-import the folders again, I spent a lot of time making them and don't want to loose them?

    David
This is the really tricky thing about running a referenced library.
You can convert a referenced Library to a managed one. Have a look at this thread - especially the reference to the AliasHerder application:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1356720&tstart=0
Otherwise: If you move the folders of images on the same Volume then iPhoto may track them with you. But honestly this is a matter of luck. I’ve seen some folks report no problems, others report that the app cannot find the images.
Try one folder and see - if it doesn’t work put it back.
If you move to anotheer Volume (i.e to another disk or partition - then iPhoto will lose track of the images.
It should then ask you to re-connect the alias with the file. You’ll need to do this on pic by pic basis.
As long as iPhoto knows where the pics are it won’t cause any problem for your books etc. If it does lose track of them, then they will be useless to you. Whatever you decide to do - convert the Library or move the files - don’t try and do anything with the books etc until you have completed the process.
And no matter what: back up first.

  • Sharing files between paralells and Mac OS X

    Hi,
I read that you can drag and drop files between Paralells windows xp and Mac OS X.
don't know what I am doing wrong but this is not working for me. For one thing when inside the XP window I can't even move the mouse to my OS X desktop.
Is there a way to share folders?
    Thanks

I believe you have to install the Parallel Tools for Windows. Do this when you first launch your new Windows virtual session.
Also make sure you have the latest Parallels version. It really is as easy as dragging and dropping files from one window to the other once all is configured.

  • Sync reading location pdf file on ipad and mac

Is there anyway to keep the reading location sync'd between an ipad and a mac with a pdf file?
I have the pdf file in the ibook library that is sync'd between my ipad and mac, however, my
reading location doesn't seem to be updated.

Not sure what a "Preview File" is ... but I will assume you mean a PDF file.
First of all, Apple products are very good at reading PDF files.  In general, you don't need any special PDF viewer, as these are built in.
The place I would store PDF documents is in the iBooks reader.  iBooks is a free app available in the App Store.  It is where you would keep books you purchase in the App Store.  Those books are stored in iTunes on your computer.  You can store your PDFs there too.
To find PDFs, open iBooks, click on the "Books" button and then select PDFs.

  • HT3775 How do I import AVCHD  (.mts) files to iphoto and quicktime

How do I import, save, and play AVCHD (.mts) files to iphoto '11 and/or Quicktime?

First thing I'd try is deleting the iMovie Preferences. In the Finder, hold down the Option key and select Library from the Go menu. Navigate to the Preferences folder and find the com.apple.imovie.plist file and delete it.
    Try opening iMovie.
If that doesn't work, restart holding down the shift key. It will run some disk checks (progress bar displayed), and then boot to the login window. It will say it is in safe mode on the login screen. Log in and check if iMovie works in safe mode.
From there, I'm not sure. Maybe boot into recovery hd and repair the disk.

  • Sharing files between pc and mac using ipod ?

I have a PC at work and Mac at home. My work email only allows 10MB enclosures and my work files are often 100MB.
I want to take the files and not the processor home to work on. Can i do this using my colour iPod ?
What i did is format the iPod on the PC and then fill it and sync it with my Mac at home. I did this because i believed that whilst a Mac can read PC file structures the reverse is not true.
Problem is that i get an error message from iTunes each time when it tries to sync up. So the sync seems to abort rather than complete.
Anyone any ideas/experience that may be relevant ?

    btw the error is
"Attempting to copy to the disk "Guy_s iPod" failed. The file name was invalid."
    and then it says
"The iPod "Guy's iPod II" cannot be updated. The disk could not be read or written to."
