One computer, 2 iTunes accounts

Many hours spent trying to figure this out. We have one computer with internet access. I already have an iTunes account and have used it often. Another member of the family who has access to the same computer, wants a separte LIBRARY. I have opened 2 accounts...my original and then a yahoo for 2nd person. But even when I sign in under the new yahoo account, it brings up my original libary list which we do not what to sync with the new iPOD.
New iPOD wants his own library to come up when he uses my computer but his Apple Id and password. Any suggestions??

Hi, suemach.
I'm not sure if I understand your situation precisely but it sounds like you're both using the same Windows XP User Account.
If that's correct, have a look at this article in the Apple Knowledge Base and let us know if it brings you any combination of joy and/or satisfaction.

  • Can you use apps from one computer/iTunes accounts on multiple iPhones?

    Hello All!
I have been using a 3G since they were released on and syncing it to one computer and one iTunes account. My wife now wants an iPhone as well. I know what Apple's policy is on music and video, but what about app sharing. *If the phone is synced with the same computer and uses the same iTunes account (on the iPhone to login), will she be able to free access to all of the applications I have previously downloaded or will she need to pay for all non-free apps?* I couldn't find an answer in the Apple knowledgebase (except for the iPhone software itself, not the 3rd-party App Store apps).
I would appreciate a quick answer, as we're thinking of picking one up tomorrow. I'd appreciate the help and thanks in advance Happy holidays!

Thanks all! I'm glad to have that answered. Apple said they couldn't answer it! Love those tech/sales support people for iTunes!!!

  • Two iphones one computer/itunes account?

I have two iphones (first generation and 3g) and I am looking for details on how to connect and setup the phones to one account while still keeping our stuff separate. I really don't want to have two accounts.

The easiest way to sync specific contacts is select specific groups or folders form the contact manager, in iTunes. Each iPhone will have its own specific sync settings. More detailed information available here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1386
If you want, you can separate things a little more by creating an alternate iTunes library or user account. This article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1495 was written for using multiple iPods with a single computer but it's the same general idea for iPhones, they are very similar.
You can sync multiple iPods and/or iPhone with the same iTunes account and library and each device has its own sync preferences with iTunes.
You can disable automatic syncing for each iPhone, or disable automatic syncing globally with iTunes when any iPod or iPhone is connected.
If both iPhones are syncing contact information with the same compatible address book, you won't be able to keep contact information separate. The sync process for contact information is a bidirectional or true sync process with the supported application on your computer.
If you want to keep contact info separate between the iPhones, create a user account on your computer for the 2nd iPhone for syncing contact information and/or calendar events only. The 2nd iPhone can sync iTunes content only with the current computer user account and iTunes library, and sync contact information and calendar events only with iTunes via the new computer user account.

  • HT4527 How do I transfer songs from ipod to computer / itunes account?

I have a bunch of music on an old external HDD so I can get away from all those CDs, but recently I have changed computers and now a bunch of my songs show up as 'unable to locate'.  I want to manually manage my ipod and get the songs I have on it now in my new computer / itunes account.
    HELP!

I have exactly the same problem and have no idea how to do it. I am too scared to try random things in case I lose all 800 of my songs on my iPod!!!
I don't really know how these posts work so I'm assuming that someone will (hopefully) post the answer on here so that I can find out how to transfer my iPod songs to the library.
    Please help,
    Kate

Have you failed to maintain a backup copy?
You should never update without making sure your backup copy of your computer is up to date.
You can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod to computer:  File>Devices>Transfer Purchases

  • More than one computer iTunes sync

I recently upgraded to a newer model of macbook pro.  My old one was 4 months too old to sync at all with my Iphone 5 (which is frustrating in itself).  When I'd gotten my iphone 5, I first synced it to my family's mac and transfered much of my music from that itunes library.
When my new laptop arrived and all software was fully updated (itunes 11.1.3, and ios 7.0.3 on the phone),  I was unable to sync my phone with the new macbook pro.  I can access my phone from Itunes, but when I would try to add music to it from my library, the device would not highlight blue like it normally does to accept the media.  When I connect the phone to my family computer the box saying "Manually manage music and videos" is checked, but that same box is not checked on my personal computer.  When I try to check that box, a prompt saying: "The iPhone “X” is synced with another iTunes library on “XYZ's_MacBook Pro”. Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?  I wanted to avoid this.  Both Itunes libraries are connected to the same itunes account.  Arent we allowed to connect each device to up to 5 separate computers? Both of these are connected to me and my family, the music belongs to me, it's not like I'm trying to steal hundreds of songs from friends.  I spent 2.5 hours on the phone with apple support.  No solution or difinitive answer.
I finally agreed to "erase and sync"  Then I could drag and drop music from my personal library to my phone.  But when I tried to recollect the music from my family computer, I had the same problem as from the start.
Am I losing my mind? Or is this just a money grab on apple's part? I definitely used to be able to collect music from my family computer as well as my own.  They should not be mutually exclusive.  I am in tears from frustration.  Please help.

    Sync iPod/iPad/iPhone with two computers
Although it isn't possible to sync an Apple device with two different libraries it is possible to sync with the same logical library from multiple computers. Each library has an internal ID and when iTunes connects to your iPod/iPad/iPhone it compares the local ID with the one the device normally syncs with. If they are the same you can go ahead and sync...
I have my library cloned to a small 1Tb USB drive which I can take between home & work. At either location I use SyncToy 2.1 to update the local copy with the external drive. Mac users should be able to find similar tools. I can open either of the local libraries or the one on the external drive and update the media content of my iPhone. The slight exception is Photos which normally connects to a specific folder on a specific machine, although that can easily be remapped to the current library if you create a "Photos" folder inside the iTunes Media folder so that syncing the iTunes folders keeps this up to date as well. I periodically sweep my library for new files & orphans withiTunes Folder Watch just in case I make changes at one location but then overwrite the library with a newer copy from the other. Again Mac users should be able to find similar tools.
As long as your media is organised within an iTunes Music or Tunes Media folder, in turn held inside the main iTunes folder that has your library files (whether or not you let iTunes keep the media folder organised) each library can access items at the same relative path from the library folder so the library can be at different drives/paths on different machines. This solution ensures I always have adequate backups of my library and I can update my devices whenever I can connect to the same build of iTunes.
When working with an iPhone earlier builds of iTunes would remove any file not physically present in the local library, even if there was an entry for it, making manual management practically redundant on the iPhone. This behaviour has been changed but it will still only permit manual management with a library that has the correct internal ID. If you don't want to sync your library between machines on a regular basis just copy the iTunes Library.itl file from the current "home" machine to any other you want to use, then clean out the library entires and import the local content you have on that box.

  • My wife and I have 2 new iphone 4's but one current iTunes account.  How do we sync with one account?..or do we need to have 2 itunes accounts?

My wife and I recently purchased 2 new iphone 4's.  I have an itunes account with tones of songs.  How do I sync the phones with my itunes account?  Since there are 2 phones, do we need to open a second itunes account?  If so, is there anyway to transfer music from one account to another?

You can both share the same iTunes account for iTunes content, but you need separate Apple ID's to use iCloud, iMessage, FindMyPhone & FaceTime. The Apple ID's for iCloud, etc. MUST be verifiable email addresses. If you don't setup separate Apple ID's for this suff, you'll have a mess on your hands. Here's Apple's support document on using multiple devices on one computer:

  • 2 Ipod touches on one computer Itunes problem?

Me and my wife both have Ipod Touches and I am starting to see a couple goofy things using Itunes, and maybe someone can help me. The first is, if I have my Ipod plugged in and I unplug it from the computer, then put my wifes in, it will put my Itunes login on hers unless I sign off, is that just part of the game with Itunes? And also, it keeps our songs seperated, but I like to get podcasts, and I noticed for some reason when I plug my wifes in, it keeps all of her songs, but adds my pod casts to hers which we dont want - is there a way to avoid that? Thanks in advance!!!

Sounds like you are using method 2 from this article - using one windows user account and one itunes library.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1495
+it will put my Itunes login on hers unless I sign off, is that just part of the game with Itunes?+
Yes, with method 2 that is part of the game.
It would not be part of the game with method 1, where you each have a separate windows user login and ituens library..
But method 1 has a whole 'nother game of adding new content to both libraries....if you are constantly adding new content, it might be easiest to stick with logging in and out of each other's store accounts. Your call.
I personally prefer method 1 since I don't want my husband and kid messing with my ratings and playcounts.

  • End-to-end solution for managing 2 kids' iPods from one computer/iTunes?

I'm sure this has been asked many times, but the only answers I can find address only one piece of my situation.
Situation: iPod for minor son, iPod for minor daughter. One computer, one iTunes account. Each earns gift cards for their music. Each needs to put their selections on a wish list so I can review and approve them before they can buy them.
Problem: How to get iTunes to open to their library for their iPod, let them redeem their gift card for their music, and create their own wish list from the one family computer, all independent of each other (except for me, who has to ensure age-appropriate choices).
I understand how to create two libraries and the kludgy way to switch between them (BEFORE connecting the iPod). While that is a solution, it's appallingly unfriendly for an Apple solution. Question 1 - is there a way to set up iTunes to launch (in Windows) with a command line switch or something so that I can create a shortcut for each child so they don't have to remember "oh, yeah, shift-double-click iTunes, select my library" or have me there to do it for them every time??
Second, is there a way to keep gift card balances separate in the iTunes account, so that each child can redeem their gift card and use what they want without using the other's balance?
Third, and maybe this depends on the answer to (2), is there a way to set up separate wish lists in a single iTunes account?
It seems that the ultimate answer would be to allow the iPod connected to determine which library got used (automatically), and that each iPod had its own "space" within the iTunes account to handle gift cards and wish lists, so that I only have to log in one place to review and approve the songs my kids requested.
I'm sure someone has solved this -- any suggestions?

Question 1 - is there a way to set up iTunes to launch (in Windows) with a command line switch or something so that I can create a shortcut for each child so they don't have to remember "oh, yeah, shift-double-click iTunes, select my library" or have me there to do it for them every time??
No. The most practical way to allow children to each have their own, fully separate iTunes Store account is to set them each up their own user account in Windows. Then when they log in they'll have access only to their own iTunes library and iTunes Store account.
Second, is there a way to keep gift card balances separate in the iTunes account, so that each child can redeem their gift card and use what they want without using the other's balance?
You will need to open and maintain separate iTunes Store accounts, which if you're attempting to use a single iTunes library will require logging out of the iTunes Store and back in for each child.
Third, and maybe this depends on the answer to (2), is there a way to set up separate wish lists in a single iTunes account?
Not in a single iTunes Store account, no.

  • Multiple logins on one computer - Different accounts, same picture...?

    Greetings,
Since the iPhone 3.0 recently released push notifications, I decided to open an account for my wife that she could use on her iPhone. From what I understand, iChat now allows multiple logins on each computer.
I set everything up accordingly, noted that I am the admin on this computer, my picture pops into my ichat name. If I then enable her account on the same computer, her login also pops up next to my window. This is working according to plan.
However, if I try to change the picture on her ichat window it also changes on mine. What am I doing wrong here?
    Cheers...

    Hi,
iChat can not display different Buddy Pics for different Buddy Lists.
This may change with Snow Leopard.
Click the iChat Menu and use the Feedback option and post your wish there.
iChat can use one of 4 Buddy pics.
You can set a Pic in the iChat Buddy List by clicking on the current one and using the edit features.
If there is not one in the Address Book for yourself And this tends to be the one selected in System Preferences > Accounts > Your account although you can set them to be different (Three choices so far) it will default to one for the account type (A Running yellow man for AIM, A Blue Globe for @mac.com names and the Cloud for MobileMe names).
Apple have tended to suppose that if two or more people are going to be using a Mac that there are then Mac User Accounts set up on the computer and therefore there is no issue with Buddy Pics.
The iChat Buddy List is held on the AIM server (AIM names, @Mac.com [email protected] ones).
Part of the process is that the local Buddy list compares this to the Address Book and Add the Real names you have entered.
So only this name in the Address Book on that computer will show Real names if entered.
You can Export the Address Book on one computer and Import on the other to get them the same. (Or Sync via MobileMe if you have an Account)
You are getting in to the realms of your wife's Buddies being in your Address Book.
Did I mention another Mac User Account ?

  • Syncing iPhone and iPod touch with same computer/iTunes account

My son has an iPod Touch that we sync on my wife's computer and iTunes account. She is planning on getting an iPhone and I'm worried that when she attempts to sync her new iPhone that she'll get all of my son's iPod Touch apps. Is there a way to keep apps separate for each device?
    Thanks!
    David

You can sync as many devices as you want to the same iTunes account, there is no limit. You can have the same content on each device or different content, the choice is yours. iTunes will keep everything straight, by device, upon subsequent syncs. Just select what content or no content you want on your wife's phone, itunes will keep it all straight, including separate backups.

  • Multiple iCloud accounts on one Apple/iTunes account??

I'm still learning this iCloud thing. My husband and I each have iPhone and iPads. Our son also has an iPhone. Question is this: can we each have our own iCloud account but all use the one/original Apple/iTunes account? My husband set up his iPhone last night and I got a message on both my iPhone and iPad that he is using it for iMessages and FaceTime. I know this sounds confusing...you see why I need help!
    Thank you!

    Welcome to the Apple community.
    Yes, many families do this.
You can each use your own Apple ID's for iCloud, FaceTime and Messages, but all share the same one for iTunes.
