One computer bumps all off Internet

Our home has had a nice little network for years with G5 and G4 PowerMacs, a G4 iMac (all connected via Ethernet), as well as an Airport Extreme and two Airport Expresses for streaming music to two sets of speakers in separate locations along with servicing several laptops wirelessly.
Last week we had a wedding in the family and had lots of visitors accessing the Internet and otherwise using the computers--many with limited Mac or PC experience. Around the middle of the week, we started experiencing loss of our Internet connection, even though communication between computers and to the AEs continued. I've tracked the source of the problem down to the G4 Dual 800 PowerMac--when it's off, the Internet is accessible; when it's on, the Internet can't be reached by any of the computers.
I've power-cycled everything, disconnected and re-connected cables, used DiskWarrior, repaired permissions, tossed the Network and Airport prefs--all to no avail. I also tried the 10.4.7 update. Any other ideas? Thanks.
C.

What happens if you "Safe Boot" the G4 DP/800?
Seems someone might've changed Port Forwarding or DHCP settings for that machine!?
Or login as a new user account.

  • HT1420 How do I deauthorize ONE computer?  All I see in account information is an option to deauthorize ALL computers.  I see where it says to deauthorize them all and then re-authorize the ones still in use but I do not want to do that.

How do I deauthorize ONE computer?  All I see in account information is the option to deauthorize ALL computers.  I do not want to do this.  I authorized an iPad at my previous employer (school for Autism) and want to leave that one authorized so the students will still have access to the apps and music.  How can I just deauthorize the desktop (windows) that I no longer use?

I am in a similar situation. Hoping there has been an update to fix this problem by now.... I do NOT want to deauthorize all 5 computers, AT ALL. I only want to deauthorize 1 computer I do not have anymore! Because there is no way I'd ever want to deal with re authorizing the other 4, when I only need to deauthorize ONE.
Have they patched this problem yet?

  • Only one computer can connect to internet at a time!

When my modem is connected, I plug one ethernet line into one computer. That computer sometime has access to the internet, but sometimes it doesn't work, and another computer is able to access the internet. Each computer uses different cables. When one computer has internet, other computers cannot access the internet if we decide to connect via another cable. Using the same cable doesn't work, also. Sometimes, all computers cannot access the internet.
For example, this computer I am using to write this currently has internet. However, when I unplug this computer's ethernet line from the modem and connect the other computer's ethernet line into the modem, it cannot connect. (Safari cannot connect to the internet.) Network diagnosis has a GREEN light next to "Built-In Ethernet," YELLOW for "Network Settings," and RED for the rest (ISP, Internet, Server)
Lastly, in the Network Status in System Preferences, Built-In Ethernet is YELLOW and says that it has a self-assigned IP address. However, I did not self assign the IP and is set to 'Automatic.'
    Thank you so much!

Do I understand this correctly? You have one modem with one ethernet jack on it. Only one computer can have access to the internet at a time, depending on who you plug in to the modem? If the computers have wireless capability, you don't have a wireless access point or wireless router, so you can't take advantage of the computers' wireless. You don't have a wired hub or more than one ethernet jack on the modem nor do you have a stand-alone router (that plugs into the single ethernet jack on the modem) with multiple ethernet jacks, so multiple computers cannot connect to the internet simultaneously.
If this is the case, then when you turn on a computer that isn't plugged in, since there is no router there for it to obtain an address from (I'm assuming your computers are set up for DHCP), it is going to try to create/join it's own ad-hoc network and give itself a self-assigned address beginning with 169.x.x.x. (If you had a multi-port hub or wireless access point, with no routing capabilities, this is how you could set up an isolated network of computers without access to the outside world but with access to each other).
Meanwhile, your modem is either giving the plugged-in computer a 192.x.x.x or a 10.x.x.x address (unless you changed stuff in it) or it is passing your public IP address presented to it by your ISP straight through to your plugged-in computer (that was plugged when when you booted up).
So when you unplug one and plug in another, the network settings don't match. If you unplugged one and plugged in the other and then booted up the other one, I would expect to see a working internet connection at that point.
If my original assumption of your home configuration is in error, please describe how you are set up, e.g., internet<-->modem<-->router<-->computers or whatever. Maybe do that anyways, even if my assumption is accurate. Describe whether your modem employs NAT or is in bridge mode? Does it have a DHCP server and is it enabled or is it set up for static IP on your home LAN? Describe whether your router, if not built into the modem, employs NAT or is in bridge mode? Does it have a DHCP server and is it enabled or is it set up for static IP on your home LAN? How are your network settings configured in your computers? DHCP or other (what)? A visit to your modem and/or router configuration pages, to see what the external WAN address (a.k.a. public IP address) (at least the first one or two or three octets), and what do your computers' sys prefs IP address, router address, and DNS server addresses say they are, would be helpful, too (you can safely divulge publicly full 192.x.x.x, 10.x.x.x, and 169.x.x.x addresses because they are not routable). I don't know about other folks reading this, but I would need to know quite a bit more about your home network architecture and configuration.

  • One Computer--Authorized All 5 Times?!

I just got a new Mac (MacBook) and installed the new iTunes to it so that I could sync up my new iPod Touch as well. I downloaded three applications for my iPod touch but it wouldn't sync them with the ipod because it said I hadn't authorized them. So I typed in my password, and it said "You have now authorized 5 of 5 alloted computers." How is that possible? I only have one computer?
I found the article that had me deauthorize the computer and attempt to do that multiple times but that didn't work.
This is frustrating--I thought the transition to a Mac after my hellish experience with a Dell was supposed to be an easy one? I'm already having to troubleshoot.
Thank you so much for your answers!

I did not realize it is by account + computers, thank you!
So, if I authorize this computer, and then move all of the songs from my iTunes on my Dell onto this computer, I won't be able to authorize it will I. So I should wait until I have all my music on this computer?
I understand the idea behind the 5 authorizations idea, but ugh.
Ya, as you said, it is authorizing 5 different "users" really because you could have one computer and five user accounts and authorize each of those user account with the same account and that would count as you five "computers". And when you authorize them, they stay authorized until de-authorized, even if you lose, destroy, sell, etc. the computer or delete the user account, format the hard drive, etc.
You can always copy iTunes purchased content to any computer you want. So having a computer that is not authorized does NOT prevent you from moving those files onto it. They just won't play unless you authorize it.
I think what I would do, if I were you, would be to use the De-authorize all command. Now if you want, go ahead and reauthorize the Dell. And also authorize the new computer. Copy your library to the new computer. If all goes well, you should have 2 authorized and 3 free. If you decide to get rid of the Dell, then de-authorize it again to get one back. But even if you don't or can't, you still have three more until it becomes an issue again.

  • Two iphones, one computer, apps all mixed up!

My husband and I share a PC. Apps from our iphones keep appearing on the wrong phone. Whenever we plug a phone into the computer, we make sure that iTunes is logged into the correct account. Yet, the phones STILL seem to get "confused." My husband is so fed up, he has stopped plugging his phone into the computer at all. Yet, yesterday a bunch of MY apps magically appeared on his phone. What is going on?? How do we fix this? Thanks!

Both try signing out of your apple id's in settings, itunes andappstore, sign out. Restart your phone and then go in and sign back in. Also i would redownload itunes at apple.com/itunes.

  • 3 ipods on 2 computers with different store accounts, how to consolidate into one computer for all devices?

So I'm not techy and really dislike reading all the techical stuff. So I thank everyone in advance for any short simple directions/steps.
I have 3 different iPods from different years. I have two computers (a pc & ancient apple laptop) with different sign-in accounts and I would like to know how I can get everything into one account and one new pc computer and not lose a single song, balance of gift cards, movies, & pod casts and be able to load all three of my iPods with all the stuff so they all contain the same stuff.
I have an ipod 6th generation Nano, a Classic - 160 GB and an iPod Mini.
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
It isn't possible to merge iTunes accounts.

  • Will home sharing work if one computer is turned off?

If I am sharing music from my old PC to my new MacBook Air, will music in itunes being shared still appear on the MacBook if I turn off the old PC that it is getting it's music from?

    No.

  • One computer (Apple) connected to internet, one (Dell) not

I have a guest trying to get on the internet.  I have airport express and my MacBook is working fine.  Her Dell does not.  It gets hung up - authenticating.  What do I need to do?  Thanks!

What operating system is the Dell running?

  • AP Extreme only allowing internet access to one computer at a time

I'm sure this has been covered before, but I can't find a post on point. Have a brand new AP Extreme, with DSL to AP, then wireless to MBP and hard wired to 2 PC's running XP. Finally got it all running together, but the AP Extreme isn't allowing the various computers to share the internet connection. When one computer tries to access internet via mail or browser, receive msg "Internet cnnection currently in use by xxx.xx.x.xx (IP number for one of net computers). Enter DSL login password to switch the internet connection to this computer."
So, now what? How do I configure this network to share the internet connection among the 3 computers? AP is set up as bridge only.
    Thanks.

    MBP   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Sorry for the delay, but I wasn't able to access the forums. I finally hooked up the old wired router and PC.
If I configure the AEBS to PPPoE (which is what earthlink wants), I get an error message "Looking for PPPoE server". The network status shows "connected to Internet". Could this be a mistake in the MBP settings or the AEBS settings?
If I revert to using DHCP, then I continue to get the Double NAT error (at least it's reproduceable). I can connect in a limited fashion this way, but some pages (Apple.com prominently) won't load, and my email is very limited.
I see that a number of others are having the same issue with Earthlink. I have several docs from both Earthlink and Apple that purportedly solve the problem...except they don't for me.
So, two questions: in your original post, you suggested that I place my modem in "bridge" mode. How would I do this? I can use either the MBP, wired or wireless, or the PC wired. Once I accomplish that, would that allow me to reconfigure the AEBS back to PPPoE mode sucessfully?
2nd query: do you know a way to configure the MBP to connect with an earthlink ADSL modem using PPPoE. Switching back and forth (wired router to AEBS) it is evident that my problem is the AEBS is not configured correctly with my MBP and Earthlink.
I've been back and forth a dozen times, in every conceivable combination...MBP wired directly to modem, everything hard wired to Linksys router, AEBS & PC's hard wired to Linksys...this is making me crazy.
    Thanks.

  • Combining 2 iphones to one pc retaining all data?

Ok, so I have searched far and wide and am frankly pretty shocked that I cannot find information on my question/situation:
My new wife and I are expecting! Yay!  So, this means that my basically obsolete destop PC is getting eliminated and the computer desk is getting booted out of the office to make way for a nursery. [Seriously, who uses desktop PC's anymore unless your a PC gamer, which I am not..]
So, what does this mean?  My Wife and I both have our Iphone 4's synced/linked to our own itunes librarys on our own computers.  Now, my wife doesn't have hardly any music on her itunes, and doesn't care about playlists, playcounts, ratings, etc... but I DO VERY MUCH... so, we need to figure out how to get her iphone along with its apps and data onto my itunes library.
I have found plenty of info around the internet about how to add your iphone to a new computer, but it's all assuming there is no itunes library established on said new computer.
There has to be a legit way for us to consolidate down to one computer with all our library's/devices...?

is bumping allowed in this forum?  Can anyone offer any help?  I tried following these steps that I found on mac-forums...
"So here's the process, this is all done on the new iTunes you want to synch to:
    1. In iTunes, get the latest software, authorize the new computer, and download all your previously purchased apps, music, etc.
    2. Open the new iTunes, go into Preferences then Devices and select "Prevent iPhones, iPods, and iPads from synching automatically." You DO NOT want to synch when you first hookup your iPhone.
    3. Now, hook up your iPhone. When it appears in iTunes under Devices right click and select Backup. You should also be able to backup with iCloud just the same, but I didn't do it that way. Once this finishes you can now backup and restore from this computer.
    4. Now go through the menus at the top of iTunes and select all the stuff you want to synch, apps, photos, and such. But not stuff you synch over iCloud. You'll get a message that your iPhone will be erased and it will, click Ok or Proceed or whatever.
    5. Now synch your iPhone. It might take a while and when this is done a bunch of stuff will have been erased.
    6. Next go back to the left side of iTunes, right click on your iPhone and select "Restore from Backup..." This will take a while too, it will load everything right back onto your iPhone just the way it was before.
    7. Last step, do another synch. This time, it won't erase everything as your iPhone is no longer new to this iTunes. Check everything thing over on your iPhone and it should all be back to normal. Now you are synching on the new computer.
If you ran into problems or if this didn't work, you should be able to go to your old iTunes and restore from backup to get your iPhone back to normal."
I tried following these steps, however it seems that "restore from backup" re-sets the iphone to the original computer that it synced too, thus making the process useless in the end.
Any help here???  Main concerns are apps, app data, contacts, emails, texts, stuff like that.
    Thanks.

  • Airport Extreme 'sees' only one computer at a time

Just ought a new Airport Extreme to replace on old Airport Express (flying saucer type) and find that only one computer can access the internet at a time. This is a downgrade odf service from the old Airport Express, and we cannot find any method to fix the problem. Until we solve the computer problem, we cannot go on to figuring out how to connect our iPod Touches and iPhone. All our equipment is Apple, except for the DSL modem supplied by Earthlink. Anyone have any ideas? Earthlink said that there equipment is working properly, and we beliee that because the old system still works perfectly.

No. Something else is going on.
Your son may be hogging all the bandwidth but your wireless network should never simply disappear. Moreover, if your son isn't doing anything the available bandwidth for other devices should remain unaffected.
I suspect that something is miswired, and from what you describe I suspect that link is between the Extreme and the "other computer".
The way to accomplish what you propose is
Modem > Ethernet cable to Extreme's WAN port
Extreme's LAN ports > wired Ethernet devices.
There should be nothing but an Ethernet cable linking an Extreme LAN port and any other wired device. If you run out of available LAN ports on the Extreme, you need to by an "Ethernet switch" - they are not expensive, but don't call it a "splitter" or you will only confuse yourself. The switch would be connected to one of the Extreme's LAN ports, and you would connect additional devices to it. You can also use one of your Expresses for that purpose, assuming it is the current generation model with two Ethernet ports.

  • More Than One Computer Trying to Access Web = Very Slow Download Speeds?

We have Verizon DSL with a basic Westell modem, which supposedly is only a modem with no router capabilities. We have an Airport Extreme Snow Base Station that acts as a WDS Main, with one other AEB Snow as a WDS Remote. All computers have unique ip addresses in the 10.0.1.X range as provided by the WDS Main's DHCP.
When only one computer connects to the internet to download web pages, software updates, etc., there seems to be no problem at all. When I do a speed check I get results that seem to be in the correct range, and it doesn't matter which computer I use for the test.
However, if we try to access the internet with more than one computer at the same time, everything slows to a crawl. Such as, if one computer is downloading software updates, the other CPUs have super slow web page downloads, slow to the point of connection time-outs at times. Or if two of the computers are simply trying to download web pages at the same time, one or the other has super slow downloads.
I feel like there is some kind of routing problem with the Base Station but for the life of me I cannot figure it out.
What could the problem be? Where could it originate, and what, if any, advice could someone give me to help trace the problem?
    Thanks in advance.

... the one computer I am looking at right now shows DNS servers as 10.0.1.1, which is the internal ip address of the AEB. Could this be part of the problem?
That is normal and shouldn't cause a problem. Essentially it tells the computer to ask the snow AirPort base station (ABS) for DNS information. The ABS will then provide the DNS information which it currently received from the ISP.
Would it help if I manually entered the DNS numbers that appear on the AEB on each machine's Network Preferences?
Probably not. A busy DNS server or faulty DNS info won't affect download speeds. That only affects browsing since that requires the computer to convert human readable addresses to numbers that the computer can use.
Remember that the snow ABS only operates at 802.11b (11 Mbps) speeds. Then when you use WDS it cuts your available wireless bandwidth in half.

  • How can i make it so more then one computer can be on time machine at one time

How can I make apple airport let more the one computer be on the internet at one time

Any computer logged into your wireless network should be able to access the Internet.
    Is that not the case.

  • How do I make it so that the one computer that has the main itunes account on it be used on other computers, when it comes to backing up phones and not deleting data off of phone that isnt on that computer itunes becasse its all on the one main computer

how do I make it so that the one computer that has the main itunes account on it be used on other computers, when it comes to backing up phones and not deleting data off of phone that isnt on that computer itunes becasse its all on the one main computer. Baiscally the problem is that one comuter and one account has always been sued for eey persons itunes. Now if we want to be able to backup and use itunes on our own computers fro our iphones and such, how will all he data that is on our phones not be deleted once its plugged into a new computer? Also, is theere a way to get all the stuff on thw current itunes onto each computer, via differtn account name?

option discovered in preferences. Really this and any feature that moves deletes or edits a users data should as far as possible be OFF BY DEFAULT. It shouldn't by default and without the users specific say do this dangerous and unnecessary thing without even letting the user know what it's doing!!! And then cause me a few hours (as i'm new to mac) searching for the option so as to switch it off. If i hadn't noticed the status cage declaring that it was copying files then i might never have twigged that this insane thing was occurring. And if i hadn't of noticed i would have been left maintaining the contents of the folder i copied the files to, the folder which as far as i was informed and so believed was also the location of the music files i was playing. How does Apple justify this 'genius' piece of software non-design? Surely it will hurt no one if this was off by default for new users - overall at least i dare say it would cause a lot less distress in the future for the unsuspecting public at large. Thanks for the support.
