One computer can't connect?

I've got 5 computers on my office network, two hardwired and three wireless. One of the hardwired computers can't connect to the internet, though it is connected to the network, and files can be transferred between it and the other computers. I have tried everything I could think of, from manually assigning IP addresses, changing the wires, resetting the router and modem OVER AND OVER... nothing. When I try to open Firefox or IE, I get an error message saying the connection has timed out. It's not a virus- I checked that as well. What could possibly be the problem?

are you getting a valid ip address from the router? or you have assigned the static ip's on the computer?

  • Only one computer can connect to internet at a time!

When my modem is connected, I plug one ethernet line into one computer. That computer sometime has access to the internet, but sometimes it doesn't work, and another computer is able to access the internet. Each computer uses different cables. When one computer has internet, other computers cannot access the internet if we decide to connect via another cable. Using the same cable doesn't work, also. Sometimes, all computers cannot access the internet.
For example, this computer I am using to write this currently has internet. However, when I unplug this computer's ethernet line from the modem and connect the other computer's ethernet line into the modem, it cannot connect. (Safari cannot connect to the internet.) Network diagnosis has a GREEN light next to "Built-In Ethernet," YELLOW for "Network Settings," and RED for the rest (ISP, Internet, Server)
Lastly, in the Network Status in System Preferences, Built-In Ethernet is YELLOW and says that it has a self-assigned IP address. However, I did not self assign the IP and is set to 'Automatic.'
    Thank you so much!

Do I understand this correctly? You have one modem with one ethernet jack on it. Only one computer can have access to the internet at a time, depending on who you plug in to the modem? If the computers have wireless capability, you don't have a wireless access point or wireless router, so you can't take advantage of the computers' wireless. You don't have a wired hub or more than one ethernet jack on the modem nor do you have a stand-alone router (that plugs into the single ethernet jack on the modem) with multiple ethernet jacks, so multiple computers cannot connect to the internet simultaneously.
If this is the case, then when you turn on a computer that isn't plugged in, since there is no router there for it to obtain an address from (I'm assuming your computers are set up for DHCP), it is going to try to create/join it's own ad-hoc network and give itself a self-assigned address beginning with 169.x.x.x. (If you had a multi-port hub or wireless access point, with no routing capabilities, this is how you could set up an isolated network of computers without access to the outside world but with access to each other).
Meanwhile, your modem is either giving the plugged-in computer a 192.x.x.x or a 10.x.x.x address (unless you changed stuff in it) or it is passing your public IP address presented to it by your ISP straight through to your plugged-in computer (that was plugged when when you booted up).
So when you unplug one and plug in another, the network settings don't match. If you unplugged one and plugged in the other and then booted up the other one, I would expect to see a working internet connection at that point.
If my original assumption of your home configuration is in error, please describe how you are set up, e.g., internet<-->modem<-->router<-->computers or whatever. Maybe do that anyways, even if my assumption is accurate. Describe whether your modem employs NAT or is in bridge mode? Does it have a DHCP server and is it enabled or is it set up for static IP on your home LAN? Describe whether your router, if not built into the modem, employs NAT or is in bridge mode? Does it have a DHCP server and is it enabled or is it set up for static IP on your home LAN? How are your network settings configured in your computers? DHCP or other (what)? A visit to your modem and/or router configuration pages, to see what the external WAN address (a.k.a. public IP address) (at least the first one or two or three octets), and what do your computers' sys prefs IP address, router address, and DNS server addresses say they are, would be helpful, too (you can safely divulge publicly full 192.x.x.x, 10.x.x.x, and 169.x.x.x addresses because they are not routable). I don't know about other folks reading this, but I would need to know quite a bit more about your home network architecture and configuration.

Yes, on as many as you own. Just log in with the same Apple ID to the App Shop.

  • How to get Airport Express to authenticate the PPPoE connection so that more than one computer can get online

    Hello,
I have to use a PPPoe Connection with my ISP and have some troubles setting up the Airport Express. I can only use the Airport in Bridge Mode and DHPC and authenticate the PPPoE on the mac individually. With this solution, no second computer can be set up to use internet at the same time.
I want the Airport Expres to authenticate and pass on "free internet" so that I can connect as many devices as I wish in a normal manner (without PPPoE). However, as soon as I put all the relevant information into the Airport Express, no Internet is coming through anymore. I can connect the computers to the Airport, but there is no interet and the Airport Utility will tell me the same in its settings.
What can I do? A support member in the apple store told me there is no way to authenticate with the Airport Express but could not tell me what the Airport Express' PPPoE setting was there for in the first place. My ISP told me many customers use Airport Express Routers and that there should not be any problem.
    I am stuck:(
Thanks for your help in advance

The AirPort Express can support PPPoE regardless of what the Apple Store employee told you.
To configure the Express to do so you will need to use the AirPort Utility:
AirPort Utility > Select the Express > Edit
Internet tab > Connect Using: PPPoE
Enter the appropriate PPPoE information that your ISP has provided you in the fields on this tab.
Click on Update and allow the Express to restart.
The important thing about PPPoE is that only the device that is directly connected to the Internet should be configured of providing the PPPoE credentials, all other devices should be configured for using DHCP. Note: I am assuming that your AirPort Express is the only router in your current network configuration and that it is directly connected to an Internet modem and not another router upstream of it.

  • One computer can't talk to other computers on network

I have a home airport network. All our computers and devices log on and use wifi and internet with no problems except suddenly one MacBook can no longer connect to the other computers on the network. It shows up in the list of devices on those computers but when I try to connect I get a message sayong the computer is not available. This happens in both directions. However, the "lost computer is on the network and can access the internet. Other computers on the network have no problem connecting to each other. The problem MacBook was working fine the last time I tried this and I've made no changes to it since then. I've tried restarting, clean restarts, etc. Nada. Help please.

Hopefully Apple will come to your aid
    • Make sure all the computers on your LAN are on AppleTalk w/ File Sharing: On
    • Check the Firewall settings of all workstations
    • Confirm that your User or Admin account has sufficient Privileges to access sharepoints
    • Reboot all machines to flush their DHCP lease or IP bottleneck
P.S. there are known issues currently with Leopard File Sharing to-and-from pre-Leopard OS X's. I do not know why your window magically closes itself. Last, run Software Update. Good luck.

  • Bonjour chats - one computer can initiate, another cannot

Two Leopard Macs are on the same AirPort network. Each can see the other in Bonjour iChat pane. However, only one (A) can initiate chats to the other (B).
When B tries to initiate chats to A, it times out with:
"bonjour error, Instant Message connection failed. The other person’s computer may be unreachable."
Even though immediately before and after that, A can successfully initiate chats to B.
Nothing shows up in either computers' Console log when this happens. Nor can I find anything in any other log.
This problem has been going on for... I don't know how long. Hasn't been much of an issue, but I'd like to figure it out. Any ideas where to look?

    For the points
As the other suggestion was a lot closer and mine was an alternative that was wide of the mark, I am not sure I earned them that time.

  • Two Ipods for one computer:  Can this work?

    Question:
My wife has an Ipod nano and my daughter wants one for Christmas. If my daughter hooks hers up to the computer, will it automatically load all the songs in my wifes itunes? Can they keep their songs separate from each others Ipods?
Thanks in advance for any info.

Apple has a great iPod website that explains all kinds of things about the iPod. Be sure to take a look there.
But to answer your question, yes, your daughter and wife can certainly use one computer and two iPods. My wife and I did for about a year. The first question is this - do they share any of the same musical tastes?
If not, then the easiest solution would be to create an account on your computer for your daughter. She can put her music in that account, keep her own iTunes library, and fill her iPod to her own delight.
If they do share any musical interests then it will be more economical to use just the one account. Your wife and daughter can create their own individual playlists and set their iPod preferences to sync only the playlists they choose.

  • After setting printer up, computer can't connect

I have a network printer (HP Deskjet 6127 with Ethernet) connect to an Airport Extreme. I set up the printer on my Mini (10.6.8) connected wirelessly to the network and it all seemed to work fine.
But when I try to print it just hangs and then gives me the 'can't connect to the printer will try again in 30 secs' message. I know the printer works on the network over wireless because I can print from my MacBook.
    What's going on?

The "can't connect to printer" message can often be a result of using a protocol that is not supported by the printer. When you added the printer to the Mini, did you do so by opening the Default Add Printer browser and selecting the advertised (Bonjour) printer? Or did you select one of the IP protocols, such as IPP? If it was the latter, then this can be the cause. Since the MacBook is working, open Print & Fax, select the printer and then open Options & Supplies. The General tab will show you what protocol is being used for the print queue (URI). If you are not sure what is being used, copy and paste this information back here.

  • What kind of computer can I connect to the display (input)

Hello. I have an iMac 27" mid 2010 and I learned that I can connect another computer to the display, question is what kind of computer supports? Can I connect a windows Laptop, or does it have to be another mac?
If I can connect a windows Laptop, what kind of adapter should I use?
    Thanks.

The 'Belkin AV360 HDMI-to-Mini DisplayPort Converter' will let you hook almost any device with an HDMI output. Including xbox 360, PS3, and some laptops and desktops with HDMI output.

The 'Gefen DVI to Mini DisplayPort Adapter' will let you hook DVI devices up to your computer. (most computers with DVI outputs, including PCs)

  • One computer can't see any other iPhoto shared libraries

My Powerbook can't see any other computer's shared iPhoto libraries. However, all my other computers can see its iPhoto library.
All computers are running the same version of iPhoto.
I posted this in the iPhoto forum, but I'm reasonably sure this is a networking problem. Why? If I create another user on my Powerbook, it can see all the other shared libraries. So, the problem exists on only one account on one computer. I think there is a corrupt system setting in that account's ~/Library/ somewhere. Any suggestion which file it is? I've already dragged out likely culprits to no avail.
I have no problem sharing iTunes libraries; that works fine. So do file transfers to and from.
    Here's what else I've done:
Verified iPhoto Preferences is set to "Look for shared photos" and "Share my photos" (obviously).
Tried requiring a password, and not requiring a password
Verified System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall has "iPhoto Bonjour Sharing" checked.
    Deleted ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist
    Deleted ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    Deleted ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iApps.plist
    Deleted ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.digihub.plist
    Turned off Little Snitch
Quit / restarted iPhoto a few times
Logged in / out, rebooted a few times
    Researched iPhoto Help
    Researched the discussion boards
Repaired permissions on both (as you can see, I'm resorting to voodoo tactics)
Dragged my iPhoto Library out of ~/Pictures and created a brand new empty library (more voodoo)
    Googled the problem
    Posted this topic
That's all I can think of to do.
    So... what haven't I done?

If iPhoto works for one user on a computer, it ought to work for all users. So the program itself can't possibly be a problem. Right?
Apparently not. I deleted iPhoto, and reinstalled it. That fixed the problem for the one recalcitrant account.
The problem with voodoo is that sometimes, it works.
