One computer - windowsxp - two ipods. Can both share itunes library?

I have a 5th gen ipod with 3300 tracks loaded. My wife has now bought a second hand 4th gen with click wheel which I would like to share with my itunes library.
Problem is - can this be done and if so how do I go about it?
Was about to restore the 4th gen ipod but I am terrified that this will corrupt my current set up in some way. This is the last thing I want to do.
Can someone please give me an idiots guide to the steps that I will need to take to getting the two ipods linked to the same library.

There are a couple of methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer. Method one is to have two Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you two completely separate libraries. Method two is to set your preferences so that either one or both iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library. Have a look at this article and see what you think and go for whichever you feel suits your needs best: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer
Another option when using a single library is to set one or both of the iPods to manual update: Managing Your Songs Manually

  • Can I sync more than one of my own ipods to my own itunes library? Same computer.

    Hi,
I lost my 6th generation ipod nano a few months ago. Bought a 4th generation, synced to my itunes library, and now found my old 6th gen nano. The 6th gen nano has my old music on it, but I'm actually more interested in just being able to sync it with my current itunes library. I've since added songs and changed a few playlists. Note - I've been using the same computer all along. If memory serves, I may have had to reinstall itunes software when I purchased the 4th gen ipod for syncing - but I'm pretty sure all my music was still on my computer. Any advice welcome. Many thanks!

Thanks so much for the link stedman1  - and it's likely the third option since I'm the only one on the computer. However, when I connect my newly re0discovered gen 6 ipod, a dialogue box appears stating An Ipod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the ipod. Then try again. If the problem persists, please uninstall Itunes. Then install Itunes again.
I would think the all my apples devices would just be able to plug into my library. The gen 6 was mine - so even though i lost it for a while, I would assume, it's still would read as mine. And I'm not tech savvy enough to really trust that all my music on my computer will be reinstated in to the library. (Not to mention the window on the ipod itself is asking me to reset or cancel - which means I lose all that other music. I'm worried if I reset my Ipod gen 6 to get it to try and sync with my existing library, I 'll lose both the music on my Ipod (which is ok) AND not be able to recover and then sync the music in my library. (which is not OK). Any suggestions or advice for the technically challenged?
    Many thanks!

  • One person buys Premium but can both share their s...

    Hi everyone,
We are a group of 3 individual Skypers from aroun the world, working on a project and have recently thought about paying for a Premium account to get Screen Sharing and Video. If only one person pays for it, does it mean all three can share their screen as well, or the person with the premium account?
    Thank you,

Each subscriber needs their own iTunes library on their own computer. They will not be able to share their music.

  • Can I run two ipods from the same itunes library/account?

I have a 20gb photo colour ipod and have just bought a new 30gb video ipod. I need to know whether I can run them off the same library and itunes account or do I have to have separate user accounts?
      Windows XP   iTunes 7.0.1.8

    Yes, you can.
You can either have multiple user accouts on your computer, or create separate playlists for your two iPods in iTunes.

  • Can you connect two iPods to the same iTunes library?

This might sound dumb but I honestly have no idea - I want to purchase a second iPod but don't know if I can run them both from the same iTunes library? The new one I want is a shuffle so a much small capacity then my other iPod. Help.

you can use a virtually unlimited number of mobile devices with a single iTunes library. in fact, Apple wants you to buy as many of them as possible

  • Using two iPods on the same iTunes library and same computer

Just bought a 60G video iPod, already having a 40G standard iPod full of music. Is there anyway I can share my library with my two iPods ?

    Just plug it in.
No software needed to install & no need to do anything else.

  • Can I share itunes library with my family icloud

My kids have their itunes library, my husband does too, and mine is different as well. We all use my account and do share songs amoungst our libraries. WIth iCloud is this still work seamlessly in the same fashion or do we all need different user ID/passwords?
Can we do this with Calendaring, documents, photos too? All on one account, but all selecting what we want to select?

itunes has two different ways of sharing music
    1) clicking on file , home sharing and turning on home sharing, and entering your apple id. this is required for iphone, ipods and ios devices you are only allowed to share to 5 computers this way. this allows you to import songs to your itunes client  from your itunes server. and each compuer needs to be logged into your itunes account
    2) clicking on itunes, preferences, clicking on share tab, and cicking on "share my library on my local nework " this will not allow itunes libraries to be shared with ipods, iphones or ios devices. itunes cleints will not be alllowed to important songs from your itunes server. however itunes clients do not have to be logged into apple at all. they don't even need to be authorized to play music. they will prompt for your itunes account if you try and play a song that has DRM, but if the music has no DRM they will play fine
your only allowed 5 computers associated with an apple id. upgrading your music collection to itunes plus or using itunes match #2 might be able to save your precious itunes computer slots
i have them both turned on

  • Can I share itunes library with iOS, without Home Sharing?

    Hi All,
I have shared my library with my local network via preferences > sharing on my macbook. However, cannot see the shared library in my iOS device music app. Is it possible to access a shared library without having to set up Home Sharing? Perhaps a third party app can do it?

  • How can I share itunes library across 5 users on a single iMac?

I have a new iMac and have set up 5 user accounts for each member of the family.  My account is the administrator account.  All of the iTunes music is in the Music folder of my user area.  I would like all users to have access to this library.  I have tried making the music folder a shared one and selecting it when in iTunes from other user areas but can't make it work.  Any advice?

  • Can I share iTunes library between different users on the same pc

I want to know if and how I can share an iTunes library with other user accounts on the same laptop? Can anyone help please.

Jim, sorry, I should have mentioned that permissions issue.
I have a similar setup on a Mac mini. I have the entire iTunes library in the shared folder and on each user account, I point it to that iTunes library file. That way there isn't a permissions problem when multiple accounts are connected to it.
The only problem with that is that each user account connected to that iTunes library can make changes to the library file (ratings, playlists, etc.)

  • Can i share itunes library between separate user accounts?

i bought a new imac and i am in the process of migrating from my pc. I have transferred my itunes library into my user account on my imac from my old windows computer. I have 3 other user accounts on my imac that i would like to be able to access the same library. I have selected the option to share libraries, but i cannot seem to access the itunes library on any of the other user accounts. Since the music files are on the hard drive, it seems like i should be able to access those files on all accounts. any suggestions?

  • One computer with two ipods

I am trying to set up my youngest sons new nano on the computer but we are receiving the message to "remove or repair". This is happening because my older son has his ipod already in the computer. Can we not have both and let them be completely seperate in the music that they store? I am very frustrated as I don't want to believe itunes would only allow one "i" user per computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

iTunes does let you have more than one iPod attached to a computer. I have my Nano and my 60 Gb both attached but have given them separate names so that iTunes can identify each independent of the other.
Given the iPods you are trying to connect will both be getting their music from the computer you are trying to attach them to maybe try doing the repair (if the iPod has been attached to another computer previously it may just be that the iPod and/or the computer are getting confused). Once the repair is done, sync the music back onto the iPod. This has worked for me before, so hopefully ....

  • Can I share iTunes library with family?

Long story short, my sister has a TON of music. She's bought it all either from iTunes or she has the CDs. I know technically it's illegal to even copy the CDs so I'm guessing it's illegal for me to copy her library and add it into mine. I am going to buy the music, but I was wondering what your feelings are on this and what the rules say. She just moved out so she's not part of the house hold any more but my sisters and I have her music. I really don't feel like spending a thousand bucks on buying the songs from iTunes but am prepared to do so over the next few years. The home sharing allows for something like this, but the problem is, the main computer just moved out lol.
