One Database multiple computers?

Hello -- I have my itunes library (*.itl) on my home server along with  my mp3 files.
Will there be a probem if I access this DB from my  Windows  desktop and  windows laptop at the same time?
Thanks

Yes, only one instance of iTunes can open the database at any one time.

  • One iPhone, multiple computers

    Hi,
I'm using my iPhone 3G with a few computers (office, home, laptop etc.). Each of these computer is running the latest version of iTunes. I am able to sync outlook and IE information on all machines.
The problem is that I can copy music to my iphone using one computer only, the rest won't let me copy music to the iPhone. All the music files are MP3.
Is there a way to enable music copying on more than one machine?
    Thanks.

By design, the iPhone will sync itunes content with ONE computer at a time. You can sync contacts & calendars with multiple computers. If you attempt to sync itunes content with a second computer, all itunes content will first be erased from your phone & then replaced with the content from the second computer. This is a design feature.

  • One Catalogue Multiple Computers

Is it possible to set up one lightroom catalog on a server so that multiple computers can all have access to it?

    Multiple simultaneous users: no.
Some people have invented schemes for sharing catalog via network when participating computers are only used one at a time  - do an internet search and you should be able to find many such discussions.

  • One disk, multiple computers to back up

Can a single backup disk be used with Time Machine to back up multiple computers, or do we need one backup disk per computer?

    Shaun,
The 'eating away' you're referring to is called pre-thinning by Time Machine. This process occurs just prior to an immediately after each backup. TM will only perform pre-thinning on the backups of the current computer being backed up.
It's my understanding that the backed-up data of other computers is respected by Time Machine when it is performing backups of a different computer. Then when the other computer is being backed up TM will, if necessary, perform the pre-thinning on that computer only.
    Does this make sense?

  • One Library - Multiple Computers

I searched a little bit on here, but couldn't find a good solution. Hopefully you can help me out.
Here is what I currently have:
    - iMac
    - 2 MacBooks
    - Time Capsule
    - Apple TV
    - iDisk
    - Drobo
I want to store my iPhoto library and iTunes library in a single place where all the computers and Apple TV can access them.
I thought the Time Capsule might be the best place, but I can't figure out a way to backup the Time Capsule. I tried SuperDuper and CCC, but the Time Capsule isn't mounted (even though I was able to make it show up on my desktop) so it isn't an option for the source disk.
I've read on here that iDisk will be too slow.
I thought about connecting the Drobo to the Time Capsule via USB and storing the files on there. The benefit to this is the Drobo doesn't need to be backed up b/c it duplicates the data itself.
I thought about getting a Mac Mini as using that as a media server to store the files and then I could use SuperDuper to backup the Mini.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

    BG:
If you have the library on an external HD that has ownership set to be ignored you should be able to reliably have all users use that library. The only caveat is that *only one can open and use it at a time*. It's explained in this Apple document: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
I don't know if you can daisy chain a FW hard drive off of the Time Capsule, have it formatted for OS X Extended (Journaled) but if you can you might be able to have the library on such a HD. If the Time Capsule has a port for another drive to be connected and you have the drive you could test it out while keeping your original copy of the library on your own Mac until you're sure it works OK. Also ask in the Time Capsule forum on this.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • What is the best way to set up devices and multiple computers for a family

I am trying to setup multiple devices and computers with home sharing.  I currently have 1 apple I'd for my wife and one for me.   I want to set up home sharing for us and my two kids.  We have two small laptops that stay at home and one that goes back and forth to work.
?1. Do i need to give up my apple I'd and share my wife's or vise versa or do I just enter it into my device iPhone or iPad when I want to load something from another library onto my device and the change I'd back.  Will the stuff still be there then when I switch back to my apple Id.     Can I switch like that.
    2. Should my kids each have their own apple I'd or just use the same one for multiple computers and devices.
    3. Does a network system outside of wifi need to be setup for the computers another wards have the computers linked on a network. Or can they just be in the same place at the same time with wifi.  Generic linksys Internet connection.

Unless you have 3rd-party apps allowing Windoze to read and write Mac OS Extended, or your Mac to read & write NTFS, your options are ExFat or Fat.   See #9 in Using Disk Utility.

  • Network drives fail (drives used to share databases among multiple computers).

I am using databases on multiple computers to store test results for a production line. The computers share info from thier databases with each other using dsn's made with the ODBC Windows XP Admin Tool (Control Panel). This works well most of the time but occasionally one of the network drives fails - I have to disconnect and then use ODBC to make a new connection (a new dsn). Why are the network drives failing? Should I use somenthing else that is more reliable? datasocket? Shared Variable? [email protected]

    Gary MavSysInc,
When you say that your program fails, are you referring to the same thing as your LabVIEW Application that is reterieving data? If so, what do you mean by it fails? Is there an error message? Does it Crash? What happens when it "fails"?

  • I keep getting the box that asks "Do you use the Yahoo! Toolbar on multiple Computers. It asks Save to my Yahoo! ID, or No thanks, just save to this computer. How do I get rid of this one way or the other?

When I log on to Firefox, I get this block that pops up saying, "Do you use the Yahoo! Toolbar on multiple computers? It has 2 buttons asking "Save to my Yahoo! ID or No thanks, just save to this computer" It drops down from the Yahoo toolbar, next to the Y! on the left side of the tool bar. I have tried the Save button and no response, I tried the No thanks button no response. I tried the underlined "Learn more" and it too no response. I tried the close X but that does not get rid of this box. I tried right clicking and no response. It stays there through out while working on the mail, I cannot access the that toolbar so I cannot use the buttons on this tool bar. Please help or I will have to try another browser to see if it go away.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

  • Can I share one iTunes Library with multiple computers on a network?

Can I share one iTunes Library with multiple computers on a network?
note: one library universally shared, not Home Sharing (one library each, shared to each.)
I want to share one library stores on my server and access it through various local computers. When I buy a song from a computer (non-server), I want it to be added to the library (stored on server). I want it to auto copy to my server, for organization. I want to be able to sync my phone from any computer.
Most of this I can do, if i figure out how to use one universal library for all my computers.
Any ideas how I can do this?

    eyeinit,
You can authorize your iTunes account on up to 5 computers at a time.
However, purchased music is downloaded to the first machine to download it, but these articles have more information on moving your music between authorized computers:

This one is for moving all your music using an iPod as a storage drive

    Hope this helps,

You need to create a user account for your wife (or yourself depending on who has the current user account). When syncing, each of you should sign in as a separate user, login to iTunes and then sync. I had this problem when my sister got an iPhone. When we did her initial sync, everything on my iPhone showed up on hers. Apple gave me this solution.

    Hi,
first, I'm not Adobe's "slave" as you might to accuse me. Most of the posters here are users like me.
I only can repeat that what I found in Adobe's help sites, as I wrote above. You are free to figure out the "real" truth and - the best would be - you may contact Adobe directly, here are - I'm sure you know them -  the links I would use: http://helpx.adobe.com/support.html  and http://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html.

  • Use of multiple computers on one Skype account

I'm trying to find out if we can have just one Skype account on multiple computers?  For instance, having one name and using it on both our travel laptop and our home desktop would be very helpful.  People wouldn't have to have two different contact listings to remember or keep track of to contact us!  Any help of suggestions would be appreciated.

you can use your Skype account in any computer or device, as long as the Skype program or application is installed in it.

  • Can I have multiple computers accessing one iTunes library simultaneously?

I've purchased a Lacie Network HD that I'm keeping all of my iTunes on. I've put an alias to the iTunes library from that drive in the music folders of the computers I want to access and update it. That all works well. The only problem is that both computers cannot have iTunes running at the same time. I get an error stating that the library is locked. It would appear that I can't have multiple computers accessing the library at the same time. Is there a work around for this aside from doing network sharing via iTunes? The reason I don't want to do that is that I want both computers to have access to the actual files if I'm using the various iLife apps that use iTunes.

This is true. It's not a server app.
The nearest thing would be a library file on each machine pointing to the same set of music files. However, you might have problems if both machines try to access a particulat track at the same time. Also, changes made on one machine would not be reflected in the other. So if you rip a CD on one, the files will also have to be 'imported' to the other.

I'd suggest you consider a cloud-based file sharing service such as Dropbox for this sort of use. iOS is not designed to be synched with more than one iTunes library at a time, so attempting to use it as you describe, connecting a single iPad to multiple computers, almost certainly won't work as you intend and is likely to cause nothing but headaches.
