One enormous library vs. several smaller ones. Any downsides?

I'm archiving an large catalogue. My collection is 750GB and growing. Are there limits to iTunes' ability to handle this well? I've been making smaller individual libraries by genre just because I can. But I don't know really if this is an unnecessary exercise. Any comments? I'd say it will double or triple before I'm done.

IF there is an issue, I don't think it would be because of the library size in terms on storage, but instead in terms of the number of things in the library.
In other words, if your 750Gb library is because you have tens of thousands of small MP3 files, many playlists, especially smart playlists, etc. you may experience performance issues whenever iTunes needs to update anything.
On the other hand, if your library is 750GB because you import everything as WAV files (or AIFF or Apple Lossless) then it is because you have big files, but not that many of them (1000 uncompressed albums for roughly 10k-15k tracks) and so you shouldn't see a problem with iTunes because it doesn't have as many things to manage.
Cheers,
Patrick

  • One large library or several smaller libraries?

    I have a macbook air 2011, 120gb, 1.7ghz intel core i5, 4gb memory.
I combined two aperture libraries that were about 250gb each and ran fine on my external hard drive.  Now that i've migrated to  Photos, Photos runs super sluggish.  I realize faces is still processing as well as thumbnails, etc but it's been days.
I run a regular 2.0 usb hard drive and i'm wondering if having the 500gb library is a waste since I don't have thunderbolt.  Also, do i just need faster processing and more memory or does that not matter?
I would love to just have one library but this is all i have for peripherals at the moment

  • Large servlet or several small ones??

I am building a servlet for a web application which is becoming quite large. I am beginning to wonder about the resources that this will use on the server.
Does anyone have any views on wether it would be better to split the servlet into several smaller or keep one large do it all.
    cheers
    chris

I read these question and answers, and I'm sure small servlets are a better programming way, but my question is what is faster?
I mean one big servlet need time to load and initialize but this is only for the first time, many small servlets or a framework need time to instantiate objects at every call.
    Am I wrong?

there is no sound on my macbook air. I have checked the volume and mute controls and the internal speaker are selected.  any one any ideas please.

Hopefully one of these steps should solve the problem.
    1. Remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
    2. Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    3. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
    4. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
        Audio Devices window
        Side Bar
        Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so, uncheck it.
    Best.

  • I've imported some midi tracks, used the mixer to set pan, volume etc, but when I stop playback and restart it sets every midi track back to '0'. I've been using LE for years, this is a new one, any ideas?

    Hi,
that's because Logic reads the volume information out of the imported MIDI tracks and sets the volume fader according to this information. The MIDI information overrides volume settings you have done, so you have to identify the MIDI events that contain volume (or expression or pan or whatever) information and delete them. You can use the event list editor for this.

I have a Canon MP990 and I keep getting a communication error code 306A.  I have tried the usual turning everything off and starting again all to no avail.  I have searched for a driver update but cannot seem to find one- Any ideas please?

    Hi Peter!
I'm sorry to read that you are having issues with your Sync account.
Your best bet is to follow the steps described in this blogposts and open a bug:
    https://philikon.wordpress.com/2011/06/13/how-to-file-a-good-sync-bug/
After that, if you don't want to user Sync in your computer, you can stop it with this simple steps:
    * At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button (Tools menu in Windows XP) and then click Options.
    * Once the options window opens, click on the Sync tab.
    * At the bottom of the Sync tab click on '''Deactivate this Device''' link

  • Sharing Itunes Library with several users on the same computer

    Hi,
I'm trying to share the iTunes library on a SP2 system. I placed the Itunes folder on a partition and setted iTunes to use this folder in each user account but...
When one add musics to the library, thoses musics are not visible once switched to another user account.
How to really share the same library with several user accounts one the same machine ?
    Thanks

Note that Otto42's post is from March 2006. This is way before iTunes 7, which allows you to move the iTunes folder.
His steps will work but are much too involved and unneeded.
Rather than using TweakUI (and possibly messing up something), just move the entire iTunes folder to a shared directory and hold Shift when starting iTunes, then select Choose library and go to the iTunes folder.
All changes made by any user will be to all users.
Note that only one user at a time will be able to access iTunes.

  • How do I backup a large music library to two smaller drives?

Does anyone know if it is possible to split a library in half, when backing up? I have an external 1000 gig lacie drive that is the home of my itunes media folder location. I also have two smaller lacie drives that put together could have enough space to cover the amount of music that is on the large lacie.
The total size of the library is now 397 gigs, and since I've been reimporting many favorite albums in the full aiff form, the library is growing. But since the library is too big now for any one backup drive I'm getting nervous. The smaller drives are 250 and 175 gig drives, and up until now have been the place where I would double backup to, when the library was much smaller,[ only aac files ].
So how do I send part of the library to one drive and the rest to another???

Thanks J.G. ... I checked out all these fixes, and none address my issue. I am not looking to change the location of the library to be able to play specific genres, or different kinds of files [movies] on different drives. I am happy that all my files are stored and played from one place.
I am only [ and, perhaps it is a too big only..] looking for a way to portion out the library [ one portion that would fill the smaller drive and the other portion that would correspond with the size of the other external drive] to utilize the drives that I already own, as a place of backup. I know that the easiest way to fix the problem would be to buy another large drive similar in size to the main one I am now using to store my music.
Even perhaps one that has double the size and, an automatic mirroring function, like the western digital two terrabite model.
But, failing that option, I am still looking for a cheaper work around!

  • Source code organization: How to divide large JavaScript files into several smaller JavaScript files?

    Hello,
some of my JavaScripts have become considerably large over time. What I would like to do is to split a single (large) JavaScript source file into several smaller source files plus an additional JavaScript file containing code or directives to recombine the split files.
In other words, I would like to organize my JavaScript source code into re-usable modules.
Although I searched the Acrobat JavaScript developer documentation and did a lot of Web searching, I still have no idea...
whether the Acrobat JavaScript scripting environment itself does provide a code structuring mechanism
how to properly organize large Acrobat JavaScripts in general.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot in advance!
    Sebastian

Document-level scripts are not accessible to other documents/scripts, so they're not a good option.
Folder-level scripts, on the other hand, are accessible to all other documents/scripts. So if you have a general function that creates a 3D annotation, for example, you can place it in a folder-level script and then call it from other scripts (you will probably need to provide it a handle for the document and properties of the annotation).
One thing to be aware of, though, is that the folder-level scripts are loaded alphabetically, so don't put a reference in script aaa.js to something that loads in zzz.js, or you will get an error message when you open Acrobat. (this is not a problem if zzz.js is not called during the launch of Acrobat)

  • How to create a central iTunes library for several Macs/PCs?

    Hi!
I have 2 PCs, one MacBook and hopefully soon an AppleTV. I want them all to use the same Data. On PC and Mac the songs should be available with Coverflow... same for Apple TVs BackRow.
The Audio-Files should be stored on a Synology DS207 (NAS, small Linux-Server with FTP, AFP and SMB support, as well as DAAP).
DAAP would be great, but AFAIK it cannot handle things like cover art...
What about storing the local iTunes library on a mounted smb device? It is not so important to add files from every iTunes client to the library, but I every iTunes should have
a library like a local library (covers...)
Any ideas? Or does someone know a nice tutorial?
    best regards
    Andreas

Let me get this straight, you have an external drive of some description that all computers can access and this is where your music files will be located.
If so, one way to use the same music files on all computers would be to link the shared music folder to each iTunes library on the seperate computers - this can be done by dragging and dropping files or folders (make sure that you've gone to preferences - general and deselected "copy to iTunes library when adding.") However - this method would mean that each computer has a different library!
(You could always get one library linked and create all your playlists and then see if you can copy that library file and place it in the iTunes folders on the other computers - but this may not work if the file path is different - but worth a shot)

  • Ok so I cant open my Itunes due to Windows Error 2 and the message says to uninstall and re-install Itunes but I'm pretty sure that would wipe the library right? Is there any way to fix the problem and keep my library?

    Hi neffn!
I have an article for you that can help you go through that process of uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes. If you have Windows 7, you will want to see this article:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1923
and if you are using Windows XP, you will want to reference this article:
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1925
Note that, as it says in those articles:
iTunes Store purchases or songs imported from CDs are saved in your My Music folder by default and are not deleted by removing iTunes. While it is highly unlikely that you will lose any contents of your iTunes Library when following these steps, it is always a good idea to ensure that your iTunes library is backed up. If you're unsure how to backup, see iTunes: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive.
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Have a good one!
