One file in Trash refuses to be emptied.

I have one file in my trash that refuses to be emptied.
I receive a message 'Emptying the Trash cannot be completed because "BootX" is locked.
I have tried holding down the function key as suggested but to no avail.
Can anyone help?

both commands produce that response or just the second one?.
Sorry to labour this V.K. but since I emptied the trash following your previous advice my trash bin doesn't act 'normally'.
that command simply unlocked the trash folder on your TM drive, no more. what you describe sounds like a different issue. do you mean that this happens to trash even if you try trashing something on your main drive?
You should
1. reboot and see if that makes a difference with trash.
2. if it does not run the following terminal command and post the results
ls - aldeO ~/.Trash
3. also run
sudo chflags -R nouchg ~
Instead of being able to drag files into it and batch delete the trash it now gives a message as I drag the file into the trash icon on my dashboard stating that the files will be immediately deleted , am I sure I want to continue. The files are deleted but the process of deleting files now requires several more key strokes. Is there a fix for this?
BTW I really appreciate you taking the time to walk me through this......regards...Brian

  • Cannot send files to trash...cannot empty trash of certain folders...

Hi, Bit of a problem with deleting certain files from my external hard drive.
There seems to be some files that finder doesn't like moving to the trash, I move them, and it asks for my password. I do this and they remain in place. I've tried over and over, emptying trash and rebooting eternal hard disk. This works for most stuff, why i dont know... :/
Some folders still wont die, so I open problem folder and move to trash one at a time - this actually works for all but one folder. I had no problem deleting this folder before when moving stuff back and forth from my old PC. It doesnt seem to be write protected. What do I do???
ALSO - some of the stuff that did move to trash now refuses to be emptied form trash folder. It says: cannot complete operation because you do not have sufficient user privileges. I want aware i needed any to delete these seemingly mundane files - one folder that wont go is empty also...
    can anyone suggest anything?
    many thanks,
    Mr T

it seems clear that the drive in question is a windows drive formatted FAT. OS X often has various problems with such drives of the sort you are seeing now. in that case the ONLY remedy short of completely reformatting the drive is to delete the folders in question from Windows.

  • Delete only one file from Trash

    Hello There,
I do not want to empty my entire Trash folder but only some files which i know I am not going to use it. Is there a way to delete only selected files and not just empty trash...
Thanks in advance for the help..
    NA

    nAyer,
When I place files in the Trash, I expect that they will be deleted. IMHO Trash is not a good place to store files that I may have second thoughts about eliminating.
I have created a folder which I named "B4 Trash," and placed it on my Desktop. If I really want to throw something away, I put it in the Trash and empty the Trash. If I am not sure about deletion, I place it in B4 Trash and get rid of it at my leisure.
Why not drag all of the files in Trash to a folder you create on your Desktop called B4 Trash, and then drag the files you really want to get rid of back to the Trash. Then empty the Trash.
    ;~)

Go to the Finder - click anywhere on your Mac's desktop, and choose File > New Folder.
If a folder appears on your Desktop then you can ignore the reference to the house icon.
Continue from where he wrote "open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder "
You can find Terminal by using the Finder's Go menu and choosing Utilities, then double-click the Terminal icon.
In the Terminal window, you will do something like this
Last login: Wed Feb 12 03:21:53 on ttys000
    Johns-iMac:~ john$ mkdir ~/.Trash
    mkdir: /Users/john/.Trash: File exists
    Johns-iMac:~ john$ sudo chown $UID ~/.Trash
Password:    (type your password then press Return)
    Johns-iMac:~ john$ chmod u+rwx ~/.Trash
    Johns-iMac:~ john$
You will be typing the entries in red exactly as shown. Press the Return key at the end of each line.
    Quit Terminal.
Drag the folder you just created to the Trash and confirm that it appears in the Trash.
    Empty the Trash.

  • I have one thing in trash that won't empty.  What to do?

I have a file that is the name of my desktop that is a copy of backup.   Not even sure how it got there.   But trash won't empty it.  It's a folder of 182 items so it needs to be deleted.
    How to do that?
    Thanks, Tzipora

Alberto, did you give up on me?   I think there's a major corruption now that started with iphoto corruption.  Then I moved to trashing a lot of extra stuff.   Now, can't open trash because it's frozen into 'move to trash' mode.  So, can't shut down my computer either since Finder is now busy with all this.
Seems my whole computer is in trouble.  Thankfully I can still send these notes.
Someone out there that can help?   I need to get rid of the frozen 'moving to trash window' before anything else.
    Thanks in advance,
    Tzipora

  • Delete one file from trash

    Hi,
Is there a key combination to delete a selected file/folder from the trash?
I have looked online and can't find any solution. The closest I have found is to use rm command in terminal, is there a way of adding to the right click menu?
    Thanks

I use the following Automater workflow to add opening a terminal to the context sensitive menu. As seems to be normal here the quote has had its indentation massacred. Save the workflow in ~/Library/Services and it will be added to the right click menu. It should be easy enough to adapt it to use the rm command, I'd look into the Run Shell Script instead of launching terminal.
    Run AppleScript:
    on run {input, parameters}
    tell application "Finder"
    set myWin to window 1
set theWin to (quoted form of POSIX path of (target of myWin as alias))
tell application "System Events" to set isActive to (name of processes) contains "Terminal"
    tell application "Terminal"
    activate
    if not isActive then
set visible of window 1 to false
    end if
    tell window 1
do script "cd " & theWin & ";clear"
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
    return input
    end run

  • Can't empty file in trash under 9.2.2 or OS.X.3.9

I have read the posts and tried the different options of emptying trash and can't get rid of this pesky folder.
I was transferring files from a Jaz drive to an internal drive which is titled a workdrive. Some error messages came up that stated certain files could not be read due to disk errors.
I am trying to empty the trash to delete the files and I get two types of errors. One says error code -127 and the other says it cannot find the files. I have restarted several times in OS9.2.2. Still can't delete them. I transferred the files back to my work drive and restarted under OS.X.3.9.
Under OS.X.3.9 I moved the files to trash and tried to empty the trash. The error now says files are in use and can't be emptied. I have tried using the option delete, the commandshift+ctrldelete. I have tried using the secure trash option. I have tried holding a click down over the trash icon but the menu dropdown list doesn't appear as one post claims. I have restarted OSX and still not able to delete. If I use the eject the drive option for the work drive then the files disappear out of the trash along with the workdrive icon.
I'm not comforable using "Terminal" since this is a company owned machine and don't want to risk causing a major problem.
Please don't chastise about not researching before posting because I have researched and the solutions aren't working. Most posts I have read deal with OSX trash problems but my problem began in OS 9.2.2.
The computer I'm working on is a G4 Quicksilver, 933 mhz, Ram unknown. It has a system drive and a 2nd drive. entitled workdrive.
Thanks for any help solving this frustrating problem.

    Hi Tom,
I have been to that site and that is where I read about using Terminal. That seems to be the only option I have left. I don't own this machine and don't have the cd's or the permission to use Terminal. I will have to refer this to my next level of tech support. I wanted to try to solve this before doing that action. Thanks everyone for the info!

  • Corrupt file in trash

I've got a corrupt file in the Trash that I can't get rid of.
In the "Name" field it starts with an icon resembling a document with the top right corner folded back.
The 2nd, 3rd & 4th characters look like Unicode 22E1, except there are 4 dots.
The fifth character looks like Unicode 00F6.
The 6th and 7th characters are identical to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
Next comes a dot (period) a space and two more Unicode 22E1 characters.
The "Date Modified" field is 31-DEC-03 at 4:00 pm with the "Size" field at zero KB and the "Kind" is an Alias.
I've tried the Terminal command "sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash"
    to no avail.
I can empty the trash, hear the crumpled paper, look in the Trash and the file is still there.
Move it out onto the desktop and it disappears.
Close the Trash, open the Trash again and lo and behold it's back!!!
    Any suggestions???
    THanks in advance

  • Trash won't fully empty unless I quit Mail.

I've been having problems emptying my trash. The trash refuses to completely empty certain files unless I quit the Mail program. I believe all the files were images that had been sent in various outgoing e-mails.
    Anyone else have this issue?

This is a known bug. We've been lobbying hard to get Apple to fix it. It occurs both for sent as well as received attachments. There is no known workaround.

  • How can I return files in Trash, more than 1 at a time? I can place many files into Trash at a time.

I placed many unix.exe files into Trash, more than one at a time. I recently updated 'QuickTime' and the Mac version of 'SilverLight"
(name might be totally 'correct). I don't know if removing these files can impede my iMac 2008 running OS 10.6.8(updated SnowLeopard).
I know I can 'return' one file from Trash at a time. When I try to return more than one ('mouse click' and 'drag'
over 2 or more files, the'return' option isn't listed. Is there a way I can either 'return all' or return more than one file
    at a time?

Only one at a time. But where are they from? Did you delete system files or are these Windows files (.exe is a Windows extension?)

  • My trash refuses to empty. I'm running Mac OS X 10.7.3.

    Hi,
My trash refuses to empty, even when left running overnight. It just seems to freeze and make the computer run really slow. The only way out is to keep the power buton pressed until the computer restarts. It says there are approx 1600 items now in the trash.
I've seen elsewhere to untick "empty trash securely" in preferences, but this was not ticked and never has been.
Is there a way to delete the items one by one?

Here's a related article on trash problems:
The X Lab: Solving Trash Problems
or you could just try using Trash It!.
    Update:
If you are going to follow FrenchToast's suggestion then it is rm -rf followed by a space and then drag the file or folder into the terminal window (his post left a space out between the rm and -R -- doesn't matter whether it is -r or -R).

no, I do not think that. do you have any external drives attached? those files might be from an external and you need to empy trash with that drive attached to get rid of them. also start disk utility and verify your hard drive. if it reports any damage, reboot from the leopard install DVD, start disk utility from the Utilities menu and repair the drive.
