One firewire HD work, but not together?

I have two external Vantec Firewire hard drives. They both use a Firewire 400 connector. I have been using them together with my old MacBook Pro (Core Duo) and I am now using them with my new MacBook Pro (late 2008). The issue is that when they are both connected together I run into problems, such as the drives don't show up or only one shows up and then I can't browse all the directories. Connecting only one works fine.
Note I am using a Firewire 800 to Firewire 400 cable to connect them both.
I have tried reconnecting them both to my old MacBook Pro (first disconnecting from my new computer) and they now exhibit the same symptoms. Is it possible that using them with a Firewire 800 system affected them somehow? Are there any other things I should be checking?

Hi,
This sounds like the enclosures FireWire daisy chain feature no longer works. This can happen as a result of a FireWire code change or a damaged enclosure. This is not uncommon. I had this same problem and decided to upgrade to the dual bay FirmTek SeriTek/2EN2. The other option is to continue to use a separate port for each enclosure.
