One good use for a PC

Found one good use for my vaio laptop.
I had a problem that went like this:
Adventures in Sony Mini DVD land....
Original Message ( Posted Oct 11, 05 7:49 am )
OK...
I've read & digested all the good advice 'round here regarding getting DVD into FCE.
SCENE 1, Act 1:
Customer gives me Sony Mini DVD's recorded on an NTSC cam, and wants an edit deleiverd in DVD NTSC. I live in a PAL country. And I own a cheap camera that doesn't appear to have any kind of NTSC playback or recording option. I use this to digitize. So recording the analogue output of my DVD player is out.
Paid my money and got DVDxDV..
YAY! working well EXCEPT!!!......
SCENE 2: ...these DVD's are dual sided. the contents of side 1 show up as what I assume are chapters. These I converted to NTSC for Final Cut and everything is rosy. However the final chapter thingy seems to be an fast forward silent montage of the contents of side 2 of the disc.
The other side of the disc placed upwards in the DVD tray gives me no joy in either DVDxDV or in Macs DVD player. The superdrive won't touch it.. Both sides play on my domestic player.
Anyone got any experience/advice/ideas/condolences to share?
Tearing my hair out, and if you've seen my picture (think Yoda but pink) you'll understand why that can't be a good thing...
Pete
Then..
UPDATE:
the superfast forward montage thing is stills captured to the disc.
I used disc utulity to make a new disc image (.cdr) which has a ts_video folder and a DCIM folder which has stills in it.
No idea of whether or not I'm getting anything from side two in amongst all those chaptery thingos I converted.
Now I have a Video TS folder I might try opening THAT with DVDxDV.....
+ + + + +
Well no joy with side 2 till I had this flash...
Sony Laptop, sony proprietary stupid format. Maybe if I...
Then bingo! The vaio recognized the files, I copied them to a cdr, and i carried the disc over to my uncooperative mac.
So the whole thing is laid out here for anyone who ever gets lumped with this kid of edit job.
BTW Google was totally useless on this topic (where the dual sided version of these dumb sony 8cm DVD's was concerned)
So, as it turns out, this info could be worth somethin'...to someone...

Thanks for the feedback Master Y.
PCs do come in handy. I use one every day for various duties.
I still love my Mac, even thoug hit's done quite a few laps.

Hello stacksofamber and welcome to Apple Support Communities,
You should be able to find a Mac OSX driver for that printer. Did you check with the manufacturer/'s website?

  • Is there any way to access the pages templates that were there six months ago. The one I used for my recipes is not there.

Is there any way to access the Pages app templetes that were there six months ago? The one I used for my recipes is no longer there.

What was the name of the recipe template?
Or was it one you created yourself.
It helps when you tell us that you upgraded both your OS and Pages, which it appears you have done.
Possibly even changing your Mac or iOS device. Which is it btw?
Probably you have a new Pages which has only a fraction of the templates, because it has a fraction of the features.

  • HT1386 Photos stop synch at one I used for background.  Now it won't synch photos at all.

My phone is full and I need to clean photos from its memory.  When I plug it into my mac mini, the download goes OK, then slows, then stops at the picture I was using for wall paper on the phone.  It won't go beyond that file and none of the options seem to work.  The phone kinda goes into pinwheel.
I cant seem to find an option to just download the first 200 files so I can use my camera again.

Well, I figured out how to get selected photos off the iPhone.  Now I'm wondering about the one that was stopping the process.

  • One item used for insert and update

I'm still trying to learn APEX and need to understand how to use an item for both update and insert. Is the LOV part used for the insert and the SOURCE for the update? I have a WHERE clause I need to use for the insert but not the update. I have to display items when updating that would not show up in the insert b/c only active things should be in the insert whereas the update can contain retired values. Also one such item needs to display its value but hold on to it's ID. Also, I am displaying items from more than one table so I'm not sure if I can say it's a Database Column. AS you can see, I'm really confused and the doc doesn't usually explain these details and is not helping me. Can someone explain how to set up such items? Thank you!

I do actually have things working (I do have insert, update and delete processes) since I copied from another app, but there are some details that are not working well. For example, I have a linked field that pulls up a record (row fetch) and 2 of the fields do not pull up the values for that row (it's a select list and that's there but it doesn't highlight the correct value). For one of them, when inserting, the LOV (I think) should only show the active values but then, when the row is fetched, it needs to show a value from the table even if it's no longer active. I'm missing something and don't know what it is.

  • Technical Monitoring one template used for production and non-production system.

    Dear All,
Is there a way to have one template in Solman Technical Monitoring for production system and non-production system with different alerts ? For example if it exceeds a threshold for production system it will trigger red alert or set automatically an incident and if it's non prod system it will go to yellow warning alert ?
    Regards
    Lukasz Goral

    Hi Likasz,
You first create and customize the template, and then assign to a system.
If it was selecting a system and then customizing a template, then may be such functionality makes sense.
So, I don't think that is possible.
Better would be copy the template used for production to non-production and make the adjustment to it.

  • HT204053 two Apple IDs which one to use for imessage on iphone

I have an apple ID for Itunes that my family shares and a separate on for my icloud.  Which ID do I use for imesage and facetime on iphone and ipad

The answer to this question: "Will link aggregation can be done on ce interface using dladm?"
is No. if you want to aggregate ce interfaces you have to use Sun Trunking. If you want to do dladm a.k.a. native link aggregation, you need a GLDv3 interface such as e1000g, bge, xge (per the IP services guide)
IPMP active active gives you a primitive outbound load spreading, I say primitive b/c there are no configurable options.
With link aggregation/Sun Trunking, you can chose among particular policies (L2, L3, L4) that allow you some control over the outbound traffic spread (and only outbound can be controlled. Inbound is controlled by the link partner). dladm(1M) options section explains these policies, what they mean and how to use them. But of course you would need a GLDv3 interface first.

  • Good Use for TiBook G4 667Mhz

    Hello all!
Aside from the systems listed in my profile below, I still have my first Pro class laptop (15in. Ti Book G4 667, 768mb RAM, 30gb HDD) and was using it daily up until about 2005. It's currently loaded with OSX 10.4 or 10.3.
Though it hasn't been used or even powered on in a few years I don't want to get rid of it. Other than a fairly dead battery, it's in great shape, no scratches or wear marks and the top bezel around the KB was replaced by Apple right before I got my Core 2 Duo MBP (I was amazed Apple did that 5 years later- they were concerned about the sharp enamel chips that were flaking off). I'm really compulsive about keeping my gadgets in good shape
I was considering turning it into a music/photo server and or bringing it back up to the kitchen to use as a house PC (movie, weather look ups, light internet info, etc.). So what I'm asking is if there are any suggestions on a good way to set it up so they there is minimal overhead/taxation on the system. What to turn off, good lightweight programs to use or if there is such thing as a lighter stripped down of OSX or if anyone has experience putting Linux on an older Mac. I have very little experience Linux other than pre-built releases like Jolicloud and know nothing about custom setups.
    Any tips are appreciated. Thanks!

You could turn it into a media server, I had an old Pentium III 700mhz Laptop that I used as a home/web server and it worked fine for basic tasks. If you install iTunes 9, home sharing should make it very easy.
You probably shouldn't have to disable any services on a clean OS X installation. That being said, there is a tool that can do that: http://sourceforge.net/projects/lingon/files/
Linux on your Mac is tricky, since it's a PPC machine. You'll have to find a distribution that supports. Probably the most popular and compatible is Yellow Dog Linux.
http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/support/downloads/ (make sure you download an iso with 'ppc' in it's name).

  • I have two Apple ID's and one is used for my iPhone, but I want to start using a different one. Will my library still retain the apps I bought or should I start over with a whole new iTunes library?

^^ that's the question... Want to delete the current and start over with the one I've already created, but want to keep all my songs and apps. Is it possible?

You can have apps and music from multiple IDs on your computer or your phone, but you will need the password for each one to install updates or to reload the content. You cannot merge the content from one ID into another, however.

  • You keep saying "password" - is that the one I use for e-mail or should I have one for Foxfire?

My bank says to disable "popup blocker"- how to do this? I have gotten to the part where your screen is asking for the old password and then the new password - is that my e-mail or should I have one for Foxfire? I am so confused!!

Had similar issue calling Apple seems to be the only way to resolve the problem.  The issue can be resolved when you get to iTunes, since they are the ones that keep  this info. They will ask you your security questions and your purchases software, music etc. Once they are happy with your answers they will get you back up. If you choose you could go the route of forgot my password etc. but I never had any luck with that. Just my 2 cents.

    Hi Maryan,
Open System Preferences > Displays > select the window for you external monitor > click on the Arrangement tab and check the box next to Mirror Displays. It may be slightly different in Lion, but the idea is the same.

  • Uses for old PowerPC G4 Xserves

I've discovered one good use for old PowerPC Xserves is to turn them into a large external FW hard drive.
Are there any other good uses that you have discovered?  I'd like to get as much use out of them as possible.

turn them into a large external FW hard drive
Large, indeed. I can't think of any other FW hard drive enclosure that's anywhere close to 19" and 30" deep.
    one good use...
I contend this isn't a particularly good use... or at least not a very efficient one.
Your typical FW hard drive enclosure draws about 1A at 12VDC, or approximately 1/10th the power of an idle XServe G4. You're spending a lot of power spinning the fans, powering the DIMMs and driving all the other components that are irrelevant when just using it as a hard drive. You'd save space and money taking the drives out and putting them in a regular enclosure. That way you can even turn them off when not needed, without having to go through contortions when you power them back up.
Granted, it doesn't have the 'cool' factor any more, but it depends on what's important to you.
Are there any other good uses that you have discovered
Given their weight I could see them having use in a personal gym. Just got to work out how to affix them to the barbell.

  • Uses for older mac mini?

Upgrading to the newest mac mini, but it would be nice to find a good use for the older one. I've no need to turn it into a server, but I do have a lot of music and movies.
It's the 2009 version, so there's no hdmi. Is there another way to hook it up to a TV to make a media center?

Get a mini displayport to HDMI adopter.
The 2009 has two video connection, a mini DVI and a mini displayport.

  • What is a good use of "Comments Field" in "Document Inspector"?

Can anayone give me good examples of what is a good use for thsi field? Thanks.

    Hi KT,
Here is an answer to my question which I thought I share.
The "Comments" field in the "Document" Inspector is only for us (the authors). Whatever you put here is for you and won't show up in the actual iBook nor in the iTunes. It is just a place to make notes to yourself!
