One gripe...

The Red/Yellow/Green close, minimize, and zoom buttons are irritatingly candy-like. I liked the ones in Tiger much better, and the current ones just scream out jolly-rancher "cherry", "orange", and "apple"....not too appealing to me.

Go to the Apple menu and then System Preferences, select Appearance and the first option is Blue or Graphite, select Graphite and you can even change the highlight colour to something less garish too.
Alternatively, and this comes with no recommendations but rather a proceed with caution warning, see what themes have been made, there are a few websites that specialise in monkeying with OS X's look. There's probably a Tiger theme available somewhere.

  • My one gripe after using for a day

Have to say, Keynote is a pretty amazing application. I do presentations on an almost daily basis, so am looking forward to using it.
My one (minor?) gripe having played with it for a day or so:
After I am done editing text in a slide and I want to move to the next slide, I hit 'page down' on my keyboard and nothing happens. I have to literally click outside of the textbox that I have been editing first and THEN it will recognise 'page down'.
I tried searching for an alternative keyboard shortcut, but to no avail.
    Anyone have a workaround?

Typing Command-Return while in a text box will exit that box, and at that point you can hit Page Down to move to the next slide. This process at least means you don't have to handle the mouse, and with the appropriate software you could probably create a script/macro that would put both the Command-Return and Page Down functionality together.
(By the way, the Command-Return tip comes from the "Keyboard Shortcuts" menu item in the Keynote Help menu -- I have generally found the shortcuts summary to be extremely helpful in all sorts of situations.)

  • One gripe about Launch Pad. And iOS for that matter

When a new app is installed it is always placed in a new page, even if there is ample room in the current page of Apps. I've often had trouble finding recently installed apps because of this, and forces me to manually drag the apps back to the previous page. Is there any way around this insanity?

    Hi there,
More then likely, the old version was installed independently from the App Store. The article below goes over the process for removing these application.
OS X Lion: Install, update, and uninstall apps
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph4524
To uninstall other apps, drag the app to the Trash (the Trash is located at the end of the Dock), and then choose Finder > Empty Trash. If you change your mind, before emptying the Trash, select the app in the Trash, and then choose File > Put Back.Warning: When you empty the Trash, the app is permanently removed from your computer. If you have any files that you created with the app, you may not be able to open them.
    Hope that helps,
    Griff W.

  • How do I overlay part of one video onto another one?

Maybe a simple question, but I can't find the answer after a couple hours of searching:
I have a time lapse video of a sunrise and a real time video of a plane landing.  I'd like to put the "real speed" airplane into the time lapse background (the shots are identical location) using Final Cut Pro X.
I thought an effects mask was the key, but it seems like i'm unable to track the movement of the plane by using keyframes.  Is this something I have to do in Motion?
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks.

Just in case anyone reading this is not too sure about keyframing, take a look at this excellent video tutorial that shows just how simple it is.
Also check out his other tutorials.
I have only one gripe about them. He writes down the instructions onscreen instead of speaking them and I find it impossible to read and watch mouse-movements simultaneously, so I have to keep pausing the video.

If you have got Firefox with the DownloadHelper plugin you can download them in anything up to 1080p.

  • My MacBook Pro Experiences

    Hey Guys,
Since theres a lotta negative and positive stuff flying around here about everyone's MacBook Pro issues, I thought I would post with some of my experiences.
Firstly, whenever I got to buy something, I always research it a LOT and since this is the first Mac laptop I have ever bought, I made sure I did a LOT more!
After a lot of reading, I decided that the upcoming 17inch at the time was not for me, (student after all so way out of my price range) and since the graphics memory wasnt a huge issue for me, I decided to look further into the 1.83GHz version of the MBP.
As I'm a music student and I run a lot of applications like Logic, Reason, Ableton Live etc, processor speed is a small issue, but is not paramount as 95% of the time the devices I use such as Audio Interfaces will handle most of the stuff the processor normaly would.
This then brought me to memory. Astounded by how much the Apple Store wanted to put an extra sim of Memory into the MBP (£140 for a 1Gig) I decided to look around. First port of call was Crucial (www.crucial.com/uk) and lo and behold, they had the same stick delivered for £114 - I could do with that £26 quid!
Reading further, I found that Apple are nice and release some documentation on adding your own RAM to the MBP. This is helpfull, and means that I could actualy do it myself to get a REAL increase in speed for the machine.
(1Gig of RAM and above is the real sweet spot for MacOSX Tiger it seems)
So that aside I decided to order the 1.83GHz beast. I had to wait a while for some money to transfer from my acount, but in the mean time I rang the Apple store to find out some information about ordering the unit.
The guy i spoke to was very helpful and emailed me with his details saying, as soon as I was ready to order I should email him back and he would phone me to complete the order. Very nice.
I had to wait a couple of extra days for the money to transfer to my acount - it was going from one bank to another, but in the mean time I was able to email this guy back and have him reply with lots of details about my order and the unit itself.
The day finally came to order the beast. My money had successfully transferred, and I was ready. I emailed the guy from Apple at 7am. At 7.40 he rang me and we started the order. (20minutes before the Apple store is supposed to open to customers)
The order was simple, and I was able to obtain my student discount meaning I had the init for £1214.95 delivered. I also bought a mighty mouse as I'd had one before and they were great. The guy also informed me about the student diascount I could receive on the Apple Care plan. This meant instead of £279 it would cost me a mere £50 for the same thing. Bargain, and well worth it.
The order was completed, and although the product did not arrive the next day as I'd expected I was informed by them that it would take slightly longer as they had some problems and had longer lead times at the moment. Ordering on a wednesday I wasnt holding out for getting it by the end of the week, but I actualy did!
I got a phone call from home whilst I was out at my University saying that my package had arrived, but no one was home (DOH!) so they left a note.
I furisly rang up the company, and found out if I could go and pick the unit up, to which they told me yes. I would be able to go and pick it up from Oxford. I was all but racing down the motorway on my way home, before I got another call from home, saying "The delivery guy came to the door and said 'i heard you were going to go all the way to oxford for this, so i thought i'd bring it to you on my way home'" how very nice!
So my unit arrived and i rushed home to "play"
The box was very swish, made it look lovely - typical apple design.
Got it out and first thing I noticed were a couple of cosmetic damages to the front of the unit, on the keyboard, and to the right hand side on the speaker grill. Ignoring this I continued to boot it up and have a play.
Setup was really simple, configured my network and user acount flawlessly, without the need to plug it on once.
the mightymouse that also arrived that day and plugging it in during the setup process it simply worked. Lovely.
In a couple of minutes everything was up and running, I was browsing the web, listening to music from my windows computers and typing an email to Apple about those **** cosmetic issues. :-P
I have to say, I havent had any real problems with the heat issues. If you sit the unit on bare skin, maybe then it would hurt... but it's not burning hot, its warm.
As for the noises, yea, it has made some, but to be honest, I can barely hear them most of the time unless it's deadly silent in the room, and when is it ever in my line of work as a musician :P If I want to get rid of the sound, I can simply open the Mirror widget and it goes, simple as that. I havent tried any of the hacks and workarounds that people have been offering around on here, because I havent found it a big issue yet.
Screen problems - I hold my hands up right now and say that the ONLY screen problems I have found with my MBP is when I have used Windows on the machine. the rest of the time (In MacOS) it is FLAWLESS.
I do have to say though, the resolution is lovely, being able to have so much desktop real estate is fantastic, and the DVI to VGA adapter is brilliant for when I want to show things off, or use a second monitor with the laptop.
BootCamp - Afraid that someone might throw something Windows only at me one day at uni I decided to have a go with BootCamp on my box. Worked fantastically well. No problems whatsoever. (However I must add I almost never boot Windows on the machine just cos Mac OS is so useable for me!)
My only one gripe is that the @ and the " keys are in the opposite positions from where I wouild like them to be. But who cares.
I would highly recommend one of these machines to anyone who is looking at getting one... I have stopped using my desktop for good now. It's just pointless.
    I'm sure you'll love it
Thats the end of my story.
Really I just wanted another excuse to use this baby :P

I just checked and I have a Week 14 model.
The scratches - apple told me about the process for sending it back... waiting, getting a new one etc... and i said what about compensating me, as otherwise the machine is fine. They agreed to give me a case for the machine and £50.
    Thank you very much Apple!
Heat - it gets warm, thats it. Not scalding. Warm. I can quite nicely put it on my bare legs and stomach if i'm lying down and its just "comfy" warm
Whine... i had a VERY slight hi pitch noise, but as i mentioned, it's NOTHING really... can barely hear it. No one else but i can actualy hear it (my young ears) and i can fix it by running and then closing the Mirror app if its really an issue.
As for anything else. It's perfection.

  • Create Calendar Event? (e.g. Birthday etc...) without showing on Month view

Calendar works great love the new look, One gripe.
I have a number of "All Day Events" in Outlook / on my Z10 like birthdays Anniversary's etc...
They are currently setup as All Day Events and my time shows Free under them, so no problem with conflicting events.
I use the month view as default to get a very quick overview of my week.
If I have a trade show to attend, its usually apparent by the solid line that would take up the whole day instead of just an hour or two event.
The problem is that Birthday's and such show up the same way (solid line for the whole day)
Last week there was a few birthdays and one show, although I can't tell the difference between them on the Calendar.
Is there a way to setup the calendar or my events differently so that the All day events that I show as free time are in a different colour (like grey when there is an all day event and actual meetings. then it shows different)
Should I be adding these types of events or reminders of birthdays etc.. differently in outlook / on the phone...
    any help would be great.
What about an icon on the month view (like the +2 icon on the week / day view) that lets you know you have an all day event reminder on that day, but not showing the line for the whole day.
Any thoughts on how to get around this?

This is becoming a monologue. I gave PathFinder a try. I like it a lot. In fact, it is even more powerful in terms of file browsing compared to RAGE Mac Explorer. In particular I get much more detailed "GetInfo" info from PathFinder. It basically returns metadata similar to Preview Info. And you can get these (e.g. sampling rate) from: 1) last Preview column in Column view, 2) GetInfo, 3) Inspector-like permanent preview pane at the bottom of List view, and 4) File Report. You can also show a short "preview" string for each file in List view (similar to the string shown in Finder's icon view).
But... I still can't find a way to add metadata I care about to columns in PathFinder, the way you can in Windows Explorer.
So, I figure my last resort is to create some folder automation to gather info about each file according to its file type, and modify Spotlight Comment for each file. At least in the Finder I can show the Comment field. But oddly, neither PathFinder nor RAGE Mac Explorer lets me show the Comment field.
    Sigh.

  • There should be a smoother way to transfer a folder of mus

I've been using the ZEN V Series Media Explorer to copy music to my Zen V Plus. It ought to be possible to copy a folder of music from my hard dri've to my Creative Zen V Plus player, automatically creating a playlist having the same name as the folder. The current mechanism for creating a playlist requires at least four separate steps and is far too cumbersome.
    Phillip
    Dr. Phillip M. Feldman

This is my number one gripe. On my old Creative player I made different folders and dragged them and there they were. Now some some retards have come up with a cluster F method that I have given up on it's such a pain. I just dump the track and then go to rarely heard so I can find it.
I have made some noise about this but I don't think Creative could care less or that they see it as a problem. Clearly no one in the company actually uses these things or they would be as annoyed as we are.
I will never understand this kind of foolishness on such a major issue as file transferring.

  • Time Capsule and Hard Drive Password on a PC

I have been using my Time Capsule with a PC for some time now and it works perfectly but I have one gripe. Every time I switch on my computer and the backup program runs I have to enter the password for the hard drive (not the network password) in the time capsule. Does anyone know if you can switch off the password?
I only have to enter the password once, if I leave the computer on you don't have to enter it again to access the hard drive on the time capsule.

I believe you can just open the airport utility, enter manual setup, and click on the disc tab, then click on sharing, on the secure disk dialog box select with accounts.

  • Migrating photos from Adobe Photoshop Album to Aperture

A while ago I posted to see if anyone had done this but got no replies. I have now managed to migrate my photos and most importantly kept the tags.
The first issue was that Adobe Photoshop Album kept its tags in an inaccesible proprietary database. This was resolved by downloading a 30 day trial version of Photoshop Elements 5 (PC). It appears that Adobe have actually built Photoshop Album in to Photoshop Elements (without telling any of us paid up Album users!). It is all there in PE5. What PE5 adds is an entry in 'File' menu called 'Write Tag and Properties Info to Photos'.
This 'writing' puts the tag information into the keyword IPTC field within the picture file itself.
It was then a simple case of making a backup from the file menu and backing up the whole library on to DVD(s).
In aperture simply Import images from the file menu, select the DVD and all the images are imported - tags and all.
The only one gripe about this process is that PE5 randomly misses out adding tag information to the files. There doesn't appear to be any logic to which files had no keyword information added at all. However, this is a better option than having to re-keyword everything again.
I hope this help some of you.
    Andrew
MacPro 2.66   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   9Gb RAM Dual Dell 24" QuickCam Fusion

Just to point out that this will not work for raw files, since Adobe for some reason decided against using XMP sidecar files for the organizer, the way they do for PE/mac, bridge, etc.

  • IWeb'08 and iWeb Enhancer

After installing iWeb'08, HTML code that I had inserted to my site and made functional with iWeb Enhancer now doesn't work. Has anyone discovered a work around? I contacted and posted onto iWeb Enhancer, but I haven't heard anything yet.
I'm considering uninstalling iWeb'08 and reinstalling iWeb'06. Has anyone done that yet? Does anyone know how to do that? Thanks.

This is the one gripe I don't have with iWeb08. HTML snippets work very well. Too bad for the guy who made iWeb enhancer.
Just copy the chunk of code from your rounded rectangle that iWeb enhancer needed to convert into working html and paste that into the HTML snippets.
Still doesn't change the fact that the iWeb 08 beta that we bought is terrible.
    Yeah. I'm PO'd

  • Slight glitches in Source/Canvas monitor with CUDA MPE only

i7 3930k, Win 7 64-bit, EVGA GTX 570HD (2.5GB version).   Everything is working correctly and stable (overall) . My one gripe is that when I toggle between CUDA MPE and software MPE, the software MPE is actually smoother in many cases. The CUDA is obviously working, but I get almost a slight shimmer running up the video (not tearing) , nothing terrible but certainly annoying. Its always about half way up the video where the shimmer starts and goes up to the top and disappears. Skipping through the video one frame at a time reveals nothing, its not in the source video, this has to do with decoding or aliasing.
It happens also at 100% pixel for pixel monitoring , I wanted to see if it was an aliasing issue, but the situation still occurs. Software MPE playback does not exhibit this glitch, so I've narrowed it down. The main question is are there NVIDIA settings in the control panel that may be not quite right? I've tried the defaults, and tweaked some of the settings, but there are a lot of options and I'm not sure which might effect the playback.
Seems to happen the most with H.264 canon files and some ProRes stuff I've imported, but then again turning off the CUDA MPE makes the problem go away....
Not a HDD or processor issue, those I've checked for certain.
I am running the new 6.0.2, but it happened before as well.
Already made sure the cores weren't parking, and they are all active....
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks for any help !

Hey I've been working on this with a few different systems as to try to figure out what is going on. First I am working on a Mac Mini 2011 i7 Quad with the crappy Intel 3000 low end 512MB graphics , and software MPE with the same H264 and ProRes files look flawless. Same with another PC Win7/64 HP Probook laptop I have, again with no GPU acceleration.
Last week I picked up Adobe PP6 classroom in a book and may have stumbled upon something. Maybe not.
Anyway on page 39, there is a paragraph on Maximum bit depth and Render quality settings, as specified in the sequence settings tab.
"If you enable Maximum Render Quality or if you have GPU acceleration, Adobe Premiere Pro uses a more advanced system for scaling images smaller. Without this option, you may see artifacts or noise in the picture when making images smaller. Without GPU acceleration, this option will impact performance."
Hmmmm... So I only see the "isssue" with the GPU enabled, and neither of those Maximum bit depth or Render quality options enabled on my projects. Yet without the GPU acceleration (MPE software only) and these options also not enabled, everything is fine (on my Mac Mini, my HP ProBook, and my PC where I am seeing the issue). This jives with my experience, so I am going to check those two options Monday when I get back to the office and see if that doesn't solve the issue. As if the preview monitors when GPU accelerated, almost default to a "draft" mode of rescaling/alising, this is perhaps what I am seeing. Blazing performance at the expense of a little image quality.
The computer is so understressed during H.264 playback, I'm seeing like 8% CPU total resource usage, that I can surely afford to crank up the quality and not see any kind of dropped frames. In fact when I view the 1080p @ half resolution, I still see the slight shimmer. And this is off an OCZ Vertex 4 via SATA 6g where I'm reading 450MB/sec without breaking a sweat.

  • Mobile websites that work on Kins

Here's some sites which i find to work well on my kin TwoM. Some i've already mentioned in the feature phones thread. If you don't want to type these in, just view this thread on your Kin and visit+bookmark them.
    http://m.bing.com/
Bing worked better than google mobile on the Kin's browser. On a TwoM, if you're in landscape mode, close the kb and view it vertical. Reload if you have to, now it should display the full list/menu. If menu items are too small, quick double tap on the menu.
Neat thing: If you search local businesses, or looked up a movie -> movie theater, you can call them by tapping the phone icons. I wish this worked on all mobile sites. And if you click the car icons, you get directions. The directions is great, one gripe, no zoom in/out.
    http://m.local.com/
If all you need is a quick address, this is a faster way to get it. But no single tap phone calling
    http://m.whitepages.com/
Good default size on the kin.
    http://i.word.com/
The best looking functioning online dictionary for the Kins.
    http://www.wapedia.mobi/en/
A better looking/faster loading page than wikipedia's own mobile page.
    http://www.gasbuddytogo.com/
    http://translate.google.com/m
Google's translation engine is very good. Lacked the speech capability of the full site. Not a big deal since the Kin's browser can't playback sounds.
    http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1
Bandwidth test. In case you're curiously bored.
    http://www.onetrip.org/quip/?pass&go
Daily quotes. Nice font size. Interaction works. You can tap the date to load a new quote.

Basic, but works. I've bookmarked the flights page to directly search for flights.

Brain games! A few doesn't work, but most of them work. More under 'word games'. I found 'The Google Adventure' to be entertaining.
    http://www.websudoku.com/
There might be better sudoku games out there, but this one is simple and give hints.
    http://m.icq.com/
I have not tried this one. But if you still use icq, please give it a try and let us know how it works on your Kin.
    Cheers!

  • Subtle - another tiling window manager

It's been a while since the first subtle AUR package came up and there was never neither an introduction nor a thread here in the forum. Time to get this started and to hopefully get opinions/feedback of the of users who already gave/want to give subtle a try.
For all of you who never heared about subtle - here comes the intro:
subtle is another tiling window manager on the field with a grid-based manual tiling window manager with a strong focus on easy but customizable look and feel. In comparison to other tiling windows managers, subtle has no automatic tiling of the screen size in any way, instead windows are arranged according to positions inside of a grid - these positions are called gravities - which can completely be controlled with key bindings.
subtle also has a Ruby based config with support for lambdas as key bind actions, a wmctrl-like commandline tool (subtler) to interact with subtle and an extension (subtlext) for Ruby that is capable of doing the same and even more!
There are also small Ruby applets (sublets) that can show various stuff like system load and the time. The management of these scripts can be done with sur (Subtle User Repository) - a small command line script similar to gem which makes installing of a subtlet a piece of cake e.g.:
    sur install clock
Windows placement and window properties are determined by a complete tagging system for clients and views and can be manipulated in the config and/or per runtime with subtler/subtlext.
    Features
    - Ruby integration for config/key actions and hooks
    - Flexible panels with loadable Ruby scripts (sublets)
    - Integrated System tray
    - Complete tagging system
    - ICCM/EWMH-compliant
    - Lightweight
    Screenshots
    Install
The AUR packages: subtle subtle-hg sur-hg
I would suggest to pick the subtle-hg package to get the latest changes.

I love this gravity idea but the WM in it's current state would not allow me to be productive (no offense) and I have a distaste for ruby ( love python ) but I'm willing to grow.  However, here are my comments:
    1) being able to tweak the gravity settings would be nice, and per-tag.  I like to have a big left window (stacked) and a column of two windows on the right.  I use wmii and this does this OK by dividing the right column.  My one grip is the I could stack on the right, but I couldn't divide AND stack.  I see the potential for that w/ subtle.  Here is my current ss: http://static.milkbox.net/ss/ss-2009-05-06.png
    2) it would be nice if you could have movement between gravities.  I'd like to move between columns.  And my gripe about like, musca and ratpoison is that when i do move between columns it doesn't keep track of the previous vertical position.  Starting with the bottom right focused, moving to the left, and then moving back to the right focuses me in the top right.  I think it would be _REALLY_ cool if you had some sort of column based movement (left gravity, center gravity, right gravity) that would cycle, and also movement up through the stack.  Not sure how this would work.
    3) I prefer that new windows are created with the same gravity as the windows already open.  I would guess this is fairly easy to do.
    4) switch to python... I AM KIDDING.  but seriously, i know it'll never happen but that's cool.  I just wanted to post this #4!...
anyways, keep up the good work.
1 + 2) What do you mean with 'per tag'? You can assign gravity tags to clients witht he config so that any layout is possible and you can freely create your own movement stuff with the grabs. Subtlext gives you control over gravities of the clients. Yes, it's Ruby and I won't argue about like you did in 4) - it's a matter of taste and I really like Ruby.
    3) So just to understand this: If you set the top left gravity to a client, you would prefer that the next client also gets top left gravity?
Wra!th wrote:Floating windows need to be stackable (egbe able to bring one infront of another using the mouse)
Well, actually this was in subtle but was removed in favor for the WindowRaise and WindowLower grab that allows e.g. to cycle through windows with center gravity.
milomouse wrote:A smaller complaint, which may or may not be due to my own ignorance, is that switching views (jump) with the shortcut seems to be a little picky. Sometimes I can use the shortcut to switch views and sometimes it refuses to work. Seems to happen mostly when I'm on an empty view and try to switch (with the shortcut) to another . I don't know if it loses focus or what. Anyway, these are minor compared to my enjoyment with Subtle so far. Thanks again.
Oh, yes. I will fix it shortly tomorrow - you may write a ticket for it so that you can see when it's fixed.

  • Incremental uploads from camera, possible?

This weekend we took a trip and for the first time used our iPod for the one big reason I finally purchased it for, photo storage. My one gripe was that we often took pictures and uploaded to the iPod to better view the images. Then after inspection, more pictures were taken. A subsequent upload took the new pictures and already imported pictures and put them in a new roll. Thus, when I imported from the iPod to iPhoto, several of my photos were duplicated and I needed to delete the duplicates manually in iPhoto. Is there any way with the iPod to have it do incremental uploads of the photos? Or is it all or nothing?

iPod camera adapter is useless for my uploads as it is. So, the question no longer matters.

Hello, I have just bought a Zen V Plus 8GB and I love it, I have one gripe and that is that there is no clip on the player to fasten to a belt or shirt. I have searched around but cannot find any Creative or 3rd party cover or something that includes a clip,
