One handed usage of iPhone / left hand

I use an iPhone 3GS and feel that Apple makes it intentionally difficult technically for me to unlock it. Each time the iPhone locks, I need to use this "swiper" to unlock it.
It is hard to impossible to do that with the left thumb, and holding the device with a prosthetic device is very very risky as they made it curved at the back and straight edges rather than little indents that a hand or hook could hold on to.
The very best solution would be an option in the "settings" dialog to switch the direction of the "unlock" swiper.
Is there a way to change the Unlock button direction? An Application maybe?

Really ? You actually think that Apple goes out of its way with designs to make life difficult ?
Well just because you're not paranoid, doesn't mean that Apple aren't out to get you.
Righties are the vast majority of people so its fairly logical to find it configured that was as a default. Your point however about a reverse option is actually a pretty good one once you get over the paranoia/victim complex thing - I would have thought that you could suggest it to Apple along with some references to the American Disability legislation and they would put a reverse or one handed option.
Or you could just not lock it or would that be too easy ?
I am not paranoid, but I realize that both having the lock only one way and Apple aficionados such as you must base on a similarly rigid view of others, or maybe viewing a perfectly normal critique as so much more may much rather be a bit paranoid. Seeing as if Apple makes everything else as easy as possible and seeing as if every little piece is subject to endless meetings it is safe to assume that the one-way design of the lock is intentional.
Now, I "only" have a thumb motion issue in that mine is
not as flexible as maybe others. Simple as that. A lock is necessary
as I found the phone does funny things when I just take it out of the
pocket unlocked. It's not a big deal other than rather impractical and
as long as we pay good money for things above average practical - the
iPhone attempts just that - I find it perfectly adequate to highlight
this deficiency and ask for a fix. I work in IT myself and I tell you
that changing buttons placements or directions is not really a
problem.
But, funny post anyway, interesting terms and viewpoints of a
generally sunny mindset
Here we go:
Section 255 and Section 251(a)(2) of the Communications Act of 1934,
as amended by the Telecommunications Act of 1996, require
manufacturers of telecommunications equipment and providers of
telecommunications services to ensure that such equipment and services
are accessible to and usable by persons with disabilities, if readily
achievable. These amendments ensure that people with disabilities
will have access to a broad range of products and services such as
telephones, *cell phones,* pagers, call-waiting, and operator
services, that were often inaccessible to many users with
disabilities.

  • Is Apple or any App Developer planning on improving ONE HANDED options for iPhone 6 Plus?

On my new iPhone 6+ even with the "reachability" double tap of the button where the top screen drops down, I still find the keyboard and icons to the far left so out of reach I MUST use two hands :-(.
I may have to return the phone as I MUST be able to truly use it with one hand in many of my situations. But if App developers or Apple are planning to make a apps or options to make the 6 Plus truly usable with one hand, I will keep it for sure.
Example idea: Allow MULTIPLE options for what happens when one "double taps the button." Keep Option 1 the way it is now (the top scrolls down). Make Option 2 like this: the entire screen simply scales down into bottom right corner so it appears to be the same size in hand as the iPhone 5 screen--the keyboard, icons, status icons, etc. ALL scale down so you use it with ease like the 5. Double tap again and it enlarges to the full screen.
Does anyone know if any developer can make an app that can take over the button or does Apple restrict that only to themselves in which case are their rumors that they know this is an issue and plan to solve it?
    Mike :-)

You didn't check all this out before you bought it? Yes, you should return it.

  • Iphone 5 one hand

I know this likely isn't the place for this question, but does anyone else have a problem with Apple describing the iPhone as "easy to use with one hand"? I'm a woman, and my hands are small but not that small, and there is absolutely no way that I can hold this phone so I can use it one-handed. I love the big screen, it's gorgeous, but this entire ease-of-use-one-handed campaign seems to have been thought up by a bunch of men who don't realize that hand size is not an absolute.

I have to shift the iPhone slightly in my right hand for certain tasks with my thumb. I can't keep the iPhone completely stationary after being picked up for everything with one hand, but I know what I'm able to do with my right thumb only (which is quite a bit while being left handed) would be impossible or much more difficult with the much wider and larger android devices with little or no choice but to use two hands for just about everything.
I don't have a problem with the commercial since I easily use the iPhone with a single hand for a number of tasks - with my right hand and thumb and I'm left handed. I had shoulder surgery on my left shoulder a few years ago with my left arm in a sling for a month or so. I realized then how much I could do with one hand.

  • On a Mac, can you navigate menus with one handed key strokes like Windows?

On a Mac, is there anyway to navigate menus with one handed keyboard strokes like you can in Windows? My girlfriend is a graphic designer and switched from Windows to Mac. She misses being able to use the Alt key and make menu selections. On Windows she can press "Alt" and then move through menus and submenus with one hand on the keyboard. When you press "Alt" the first letter of every menu is highlighted. When she presses a certain letter the menu drops down, and the first letter of every submenu is then highlighted. She can then navigate through all the submenus until she hits the selection she wants, all using the left hand on the keyboard. It's very fast and efficient. Can you do something similar to this on a Mac?
The reason she wants to do this is because when she is in Photoshop, she likes to use her right hand on the mouse with the cursor inside the canvas (sketching, moving layers around) while she makes menu commands with the left hand. It is 10 times faster this way than using the mouse for everything. Hot keys are not the same because you must have those memorized. With the "Alt" key function, you can open a drop down menu, see the choices, and make your selection.
I have been a Mac person my whole life, and I have to say, it's a pretty awesome function. I really want the Mac to have something similar.

[Actual studies|http://www.asktog.com/TOI/toi06KeyboardVMouse1.html] have found it is faster to use the mouse to make command activations than using keyboard shortcuts.
The 20-year-old argument on that web page isn't very convincing. Keyboard shortcuts are certainly faster for experience power users who do the same thing every day. The mouse is faster only for new users or users doing non-repetitive commands every day.
It is interesting that one of the posts on that page said this:
I remember one mainframe company in the sixties that came up with the following command-key guidelines:
Use the first letter of the command word
If the first letter is already used, use the last letter
If the last letter is already used, use the second letter
If the second letter is already used, use the second-to-the-last letter
    etc.
This is actually very similar to how the keyboard-driven menus work in Mac OS X. The advantage over the Windows method is that when there is more than one command in a menu that shares the same first letter, you do not have to memorize which command uses which letter. You just type ahead until the correct command is selected.
I would, however, encourage Derek Doublin1's girlfriend to learn the direct keyboard shortcuts in Photoshop. On Mac or PC, for me pressing Command-Option-I is much faster than either the mouse or using the keyboard to drop the Image menu and walk down to the Image Size command.

  • Shuts down when held with one hand or tilted

My Macbook Pro recently started shutting down if it was tilted on my lap or if I grabbed it with one hand in the middle left hand side. It is very weird and any explanations as to why this is happening would be appreciated.

I know it's always like that .. how about trying to nail the scenario well so you can demonstrate there ?maybe catching it on video ???

  • IPad 2 and one handed user

The situation that I bought an iPad 2 for my mom who has only one arm and since the iPad 2 is quite heavy, she can't really use in one handed to take photos. I looked for some sort of holder to help her out but all of them seem to bring more attention to her not having an arm. Any suggestions?

Actually you can have separate apple ID's for icloud and facetime but use the family one for purchases so you can share your apps, music..
Each owner opens up a Apple ID for only their device(s).. Log into icloud using new apple ID on each device for each person. Hit facetime in settings, and input your new apple id as facetime ID.. Done..
Now go to settings > store and make sure your family account is inputed there on all the devices so you can share your purcahsed music, apps, videos, etc....
I am sharing purcahses with my entire family but we all have separate icloud, facetime, apple ID etc.. Its imperative you have split Apple ID's for icloud otherwise all your phonebooks will mix and match.....
Also as far as iphone goes.. Iphone can be set up to use apple ID to call or phonenumber (by default) So if you facetime a number it will ring only on that phone, if you facetime an apple ID that is on the iphone it will ring on all devices associated with that apple ID

  • Looking for totable one-hand keyboard for iPad

I want to carry my iPad into the field and need a better keyboard than the on-screen version. But, I also want it to fit onto the iPad so I can hold it with one hand and type with the other, so a non-flexible, horizontal frame for the iPad with a built-in keyboard would be ideal. Even more ideal would be if it had a hand strap (like my current leather case).
Surely I can't be the only one who needs this functionality, but I don't see anything offered by any of the major manufacturers, through Amazon or Ebay, or reviewed on a searchable site. Don't know where else to look.

Your best bet would be eBay or whatever online market your country has. I live in the Netherlands and Marktplaats.nl is a good source here. Where in Europe do you live?
    Best regards,

  • Holding with one hand in landscape mode?

When playing games, some games require me to hold it with one hand in landscape mode. My iPad doesn't feel as secure as when I hold it with one hand in portrait mode. Is the iPad designed to be held in landscape mode with just one hand... therefore, no support on the opposite side of the iPad. Is it safe to hold my iPad that way?

Take things easy. Research anything you buy and see it in person if possible. Everyone has different tastes.
Deviating slightly, here is the link to downloading the User Guide if you do not already have it. http://support.apple.com/manuals/#ipad
Take time to read it. (and re-read it!). It will stand you in good stead. Get your teeth into backups - whether in iTunes or iCloud - as we see so many people falling foul of this when something goes wrong. Welcome on board. Enjoy your iPad!

  • Link Layers with One Hand?

Something that's been bugging me about the way Photoshop links layers now is that I have to use two hands. I'm a WAHM, and I often am working with a baby in my lap and only one hand to work both my mouse and keyboard. It used to be that we could simply click on the link icon to link layers to the active layer, but nowadays it's a shift or ctrl+click to do it. Is there a one-handed method to link layers anymore, or am I out of luck until this kid gets older?

Instead of linking, place layers into a group folder. Layers in a group folder will be just as if linked.
Anytime you need to manipulate the layers in a group folder, either select the folder group in the layers palette or grab the move tool. If you use the move tool, check the box beside "Auto-select" and select "Group" in the pull down menu located to the right of the auto-select box.

  • The tools on Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 seemed to have frozen. The crop symbol is 3 of the symbols nest to each other. The hand move tool is not one hand but 3 next to each other. Other tools won't work at all. Really nice!

Ya, okay ! I use a number of PSE programs, one of which is PSE 9. The tools for some reason seem to have frozen. When I use the move tool I don't get just one hand but 3 hand symbols all next to each other. Same thing with the crop tool, I don't get one symbol but 3 all next to each other. There are a couple of tools that just don't work at all.  It's like the PSE 9 got hit with some virus or sorts. Oh well, live and learn.  Trying to get through to tech service is next to impossible.

Have you seen this other thread you started about this problem?
Photoshop Elements 9 is messed up.
    Did you use Barbara's fix?
It would be less confusing if you only posted this question once, not three times:
HOW DO I RESET ALL THE TOOLS IN PSE 9 ? THE CURSOR IS REALLY MESSED UP AND DOES NOT WORK WITH THE TOOLS. I TOUCH THE HAND AND I GET 3 HANDS, I TRY TO USE THE CROP AND I GET 3 SMALL CIRCLES.  THE CURSOR IS REALLY MESSED UP. DO I HAVE TO GET ANOTHER PSE 9 ?

  • One handed Keyboard has disappeared

I have been looking for answers for this on and off for awhile but it's really annoying and I tried signing up to the sony site but it won't accept the id number for my phone so I can't go further (I brought it at a store...Not sure why but that's not the problem). I used to use the One hand keyboard and it was a godsend after sending. texts. like. this. for a few months after I got my phone. But I bumped something and it reset to the full keyboard again, and now I can't find the option in my settings. I tried the help guide for the phone and followed the directions but the setting was not where it said it should be. I've looked through the settings over and over and I'm sure it is not where it was when I originally found it (in with the settings/keyboard settings). As far as I can see it's disappeared and I no longer have that option. But it seems really weird to me. Has anyone else had this problem? I haven't changed any settings that i can think of.

It has been asked before for other devices, it appears that you will need to download a third party T9 keyboard from the play store

That's not a phone issue, but rather that they simply find you uninteresting.

Amazon is not an official reseller.
If the device has been opened by anyone other than Apple the warranty is voided.

  • After one month of fine usage, my iPhone cannot connect to or recognize any cellular network.

After one month of using iPhone 4s w/o any problems, it started to go off and on from cellular network. Now it is only "Searching..." for networks unable to connect. When I switch off "automatic carriers" it's the same. I already tried to swith off/on airplane mode and device but w/o success. Help, please...

I too are experiencing the same problem on a 8gig 3G Telstra Australia iPhone that was bought outright. I also have another (same) iPhone and the settings on both are identical yet the new phone refuses to connect. I have tried a few ideas/suggestions including: settings, general, network, cellular data network and changing it from telstra.iph to telstra.internet. this works but I think something is wrong because to .iph refers to iPhone (I have switched it back until to confirm with telstra about this).
I have also tried settings, reset, reset network settings but this did not help but has worked for others.
I have also tried turning off the unit and taking out the sim card and restarting the iPhone but again no luck yet.
I plan to speak to both Telstra and Apple to see if this problem has a simple solution and will post a new thread titled "solution to cellular network problems".
Personally by all the trials and errors so far I believe it is a carrier problem and having to re-enter the pin on this phone everytime I re-boot it suggests it could be sim card related.
