One hour long recording, produced multiple short clips

Our HV40 has developed a new problem. I recorded an hour long clip  of our worship service. When I imported into editing program, Sony Vegas, it was broken into 109 small clips.  At each break the sound would break also, making it hard to view and listen. I recorded with a fully charged battery. Also during the viewing a green bar would flash occasionally over half of the frame. It has never done this before. To analyze the problem I recorded with a new tape. However due to broken cord on power converter, ( a common Canon problem I'm reading) I can not import the new recording. Before purchasing a new converter, $75.00, I want to know if it is the tape,  transport mechanism, or some other problem. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Canon Forum.
I know this is a replay to a non related thread, but since it was not possible to make a new thread, I have to do it this way.
I have a serious connection problem with my MVX4i Canon Camcorder.
First my hardware:
O/S: Win7 64bit
What happens:
I've installed the drivers but I keep getting the error "cannot detect camera".
In my device manager it claims that the drivers cannot be installed and even though I manually search for them (on the installation CD or the installation directory) it refuses to install them.
What I have tried:
I've tried using different USB ports - no luck
Used different USB cables - no luck
Tried uninstalling EVERYTHING, disconnecting camcorder and installed drivers again - no luck
I've tried drivers from your website instead of the CD - no luck.
What in gods name can I do to get my PC to connect with my camcorder??

I have edited a movie in Final Cut Pro and the video has been smooth all the time.
Now, when the one hour long movie is ready the video seem to paus every 5 sec (only for half a second). It does it all the way through the movies.
What is wrong? All the sudden.

    We need info, info, info!
    What version of FCP X?
Did you render? what are the project specs? do you use many compound clips? how much ram, hard drive space, how is the hard drive connected?
It looks like your mac can't keep up. Maybe the bottleneck is the hard drive, or something else.
Try exporting a master file and see if the video is ok.
Also, keep Activity Monitor open and see how much memory pressure you've got.

I have an ipod shuffle 4th generation. I would like for the music to automatically shut off after one hour long song rather than going to next song on the list. Is this possible?

Sorry, but it's not.  The only way to get this to work is to only put the one hour song on your Shuffle.

  • ICal 5.0 double click in date box (month view) doesn't create 1 hour long event anymore

Double-clicking in a date box in the "month" view used to create a new one hour long event.
Now, in 5.0 it creates an all-day event by default, and removing "all-day" results in a 6 hour long event. Anyone know how to get it back to the "old" way? really annoying to have to change it each and every time! Thanks.

    Lisa,
Here are some of the iCal event creation rules which may help you:
Enter a name, date, and time duration for the event, and then press Return.
For example, you can enter “Super Bowl Party Feb 6,” “Movie with Rebecca on Friday at 7pm,” “Soccer Game on Saturday from 11am-1pm,” or “Breakfast with Jon,” and then press Return.
If you don’t enter a time duration for the event, iCal sets the event’s duration to 1 hour.
If you don’t enter any time information for the event, iCal makes the event an all-day event.
If you enter “breakfast” or “morning,” iCal sets the event to start at 9 a.m.
If you enter “lunch “ or “noon,” iCal sets the event to start at 12 p.m.
If you enter “dinner” or “night,” iCal sets the event to start at 8 p.m.

  • How do I join multiple (short) audio clips into one single long audio clip in Premiere Pro CS5?

    Hello,
The question is in the title but I'm wondering how I can join multiple (short) audio clips into one single long audio clip in PP CS5.5.  I put all my short clips right next to each other and selected all of them to see what options are available by right clicking and using the toolbar options at the top.  The closest that I got was to nest the sequence, but that's not what I really want.
I'd like to merge all the short clips into one single (long) audio file to use under the video.
Thoughts are welcome and  greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    -Melvin

O.K. This is kind of fundamental and you will need to learn up on this fully ...but for now...
Make sure you have the WAB ( work area bar )covering the length of the audio clips. ( You do not need to select them)
Go to the File Menu> Export Media
You will be given all the Export Options.  Choose Wave File
Select option for Export Work Area.
Choose where to export the file to ( HD location)
    follow your nose from there....

BTW - Why are you taking the audio to Audition anyway? What are you going to do to it.

  • What is the best way to work on multiple songs in one long recording?

I often record the local open-mic nights and generally just leave logic recording the entire night so i end up with lots of songs/bands in one big recording.
What is the best way to work with such a recording? Is there a better way than just using the event marker when a new band plays?
Also once i get home id like to save each band to a separate project but i cant seem to find an easy way to do this?
Obviously each band needs a different mix hence needing separate projects? or am i missing a much better work method?
    any help greatly appreciated!
    many thanks

As for your second point, just do a "save as" new file name and cut and erase any unwanted audio from the arrange window (ie. the bits that aren't in the song you want separate). You can do this for as many songs as there are and create a different mix for each one no problem. You multiple select and drag all the regions to the beginning of the arrange window (make sure you do them at the same time so's they don't go out of synch. All the separate songs and mixes can be saved in the same project folder as the original audio files are stored in (the folder structure should be there already if you started a new logic project, so no need to change that.
I would think using markers so you know where each song begins during the show, and the above method after, would be a very good way of organizing things. You may want to stop actually recording between bands too though I expect you are already doing this.
Its really as easy as that. Sometimes things just are.

  • Sync multiple video clips with one audio track

I'm an FCPX noob, trying to sync some clips.  I recorded a 1.5 hour concert with a DSLR along with an audio track using a separate digital recorder.  I have seven video clips, all in sequence (stopping and restarting the camera because of clip length limitations) and one long audio track in WAV format.  The audio track is longer than the combined video clips, and there are some short dead spaces in between the video clips when I turned off/on.  Now I'm trying to sync them but when I do, the video clips get stacked together with lots of overlap.
I made a test with 3 minute video and audio clips and had no problem.  But when I try to do the whole event, I get a jumbled mess.
I could cut the audio into pieces and sync each piece with its corresponding video, but that seems to defeat the sync process, as well as being a lot of work.  And, wouldn't I end up with lots of overlap anyway, since my audio clips would have to be longer than my video clips?
Am I missing an easier way to do this, or a way to arrange things better?  I can't imagine the problems with several cameras and several audio tracks; my project is actually pretty simple, since it is very linear.
    Any suggestions?  Thanks--

Sorry to take so long getting back to you.  Thank you for this advice, but I'm not sure I'm doing it correctly.  Is there a way to set the angle on all of the clips at the same time?
Yes. Select all the clips you want in the browser, and then in the inspector fill in the camera angle with the value you want. This can be just about anything, it does not have to be a number. I prefer to name  it something meaningful, like "wide" or something.

  • Is there a way to make a long clip into a short clip without compressing it any further?

Is there a way to make a long clip into a short clip without compressing it any further?
I went through all my old formats (VHS, hi8, miniDV, etc) and captured them. They end up as .mov files. Some of the longer 2hr ones are about 28GB.
If I am making a new project and I want to edit in short clips from several of these longer files, is there a way to save a short clip from an existing file without compressing it any further?
In other words, lets say I have 10 2hr files, but I know I only want 1 minute from each. Is there a way to select the good 1 minute from each .mov file that I want to use and a version of this 1 minute from each in the folder I am working on the project in, without compressing them??? I like to keep all of the content I am working with on a project in its own folder in case the project needs to be moved from one hard drive to the next while I am working on it. I would hate to have to make a folder that is 280GB or more when I only need a minute from each larger file.
I hope I have asked this in a way that is understandable. Maybe there is a term for what I want to do, that I don't know yet that has its own help section too.   Thanks for any assistance

Thanks Jon - That's kind of where I started, but the part of that I need help with on is the second to last step.
"Export using a codec that matches the source material. "
The codec they were captured in is .mov at DV quality, but then after picking .mov, there are so many other options to choose from as far as compression goes from sound quality and settings, to how many passes, etc. I just want the new clip to be of the same quality as the original clip. It looks so complicated and its not clear to me what options to pick to match the original.
Is there a setting or preference that helps you to match the compression settings of the original clip? Or is there  a way to detect the settings of the original clip so I can repeat that in the shortened clip??

  • Looping a short clip under a color key of a longer clip

What I want to do is key out part of a clip (like a green screen), and have a looping short clip (like water droplets, etc) playing underneath. I can’t figure out how to loop the background clip for the duration of the action clip! I have a 30 second action clip and a 4 second background clip. I have tried to drag the background clip to make it longer in the sequence but it won't stretch.

Repeat the short clip by duplicating it over and over
or using the same one..over and over.

I am using final cut express 4. It seems that any clip over a certain length, say 5 min, does not fully transfer! All shorter clips are perfectly fine. Is there some reason why longer clips are not fully transferred? (a half blue circle shows up on the transfer list, indicating that the clip was not fully transferred. When I check in the capture scratch folder, sure enough the whole clip is not there!
Is there some glitch in final cut express that only allows short clips to be transferred in full?

Thanks for the reply. I'll try to answer all the questions (I am a relative novice). Your help is appreciated.
By the way, the other reply I received suggested the following:
In Final Cut Express>System Settings>Scratch Discs make sure the Limit Capture/Export File Segement Size To: is not checked.
I did this and it was already unchecked. So this is not the answer...
The strange thing is, I have been logging and transferring with FCE for 2 yrs without any problems at all with shorter clips, but have come up against the problem with long clips (over 5 or so min)  the whole time. I got around it by simply making sure I stopped recording after less than 5 min while shooting footage. OR if I accidentally got a long clip, I import into imovie and then import into FCE. Not very streamline and I worry about compressions altering quality!
I am now trying to import a 20 min and a 17 min clip and it only transfers around 3 minutes of each, I have re-tried several times and it happens repeatedly. The blue circle in the transfer list shows up as a half blue circle instead of full. Clip cuts off after 3 or so minutes.

The one-hour video occupies 3.5 G. I have 10 G free others so that space is not the problem. Are there any special configuration program or to record longer?

  • Editing long clips into short clips and naming them differently

I've got a long clip that I'm trying to break up into lots of shorter clips and give different names to. So I loaded the clip into the timeline, press Control-V where I want to cut, and then drag that clip back into the Browser. But every time I drag a new one to the Browser and rename it, the names of the other clips change to be the same as the just-named clip.
What am I doing wrong? What's the easiest way to do what I'm trying to do?

    RE: timecode when capturing.
Timecode is always captured (DV in this case) as long as you do not use 'non-controllable device' as the capture protocol. When you use 'non-controllable device' no timecode is delivered even if it did exist on the tape.
Put another way, if there is TC on the tape, Capture Now will bring it in as long as you have 'Firewire' or 'Firewire Basic' (whichever is appropriate for your capture device) selected.
There is one other way to capture full tapes and still get individual editable clips (and I HATE subclips ...). Squarebox makes a simple app called Live Capture Plus that will capture a complete tape in one pass then break the resulting large file into individual clips based on start/stop detection. It works quite handily and will allow you save your drive mechanism if you are using your camera as a deck (and Canons are not known for robust tape subsystems). If you combine LCP with CatDV you have a robust cataloging system as well.
    Good luck.

  • Receiving multiple short texts instead of one from some people

Just started happening where I get a text message (from only a few different contacts) that comes in as multiple short text messages. Everyone else's come through as one message, theirs is 5 or 6.  This of course is eating up my text allowance.  Is it a phone issue, a setting on my side, or a setting on these few contacts side?

Messages are sent as either SMS (short message service) or MMS (multimedia message service.) MMS used to be mainly for picture messages, but now also covers sending text messages longer than 160 characters. My guess is that your friend has a phone or service that for some reason is not allowing MMS

  • Replace audio in multiple video clips at one time

Hello. I am new to the forum so I apologize if I break any of the rules!
I have a collection of tutorial videos, all edited but the audio had some balance issues. The files were not in Premiere Pro at the time. They are the final edited videos but then I was told the audio needed to be adjusted.
I have re-balanced the audio, saved the audio as wav files and now I need to replace the old audio (in the finished video file) with the new audio (the wav files I edited and saved). The timing is all the same. It's just a matter of replacing the current file.
Is this doable as a batch process? Is it doable in Premiere Pro or do I need to use Audition or some other Adobe software?
    I hope this makes sense.
    Thank you in advance!

  • HT201066 How can I split a long recording audio file into multiple audio files?

    Hi,
How can I split a long recording audio file into multiple audio files?
With Windows I was using Nero software, which is not available for Mac. Is there any similar app for free for Mac?
    Thanks!

    Hello ingiorgio
You can import the track into GarageBand and then split the tracks there. Once that it is done you can highlight the ruler section and then share the song to iTunes to get them separated out.
