One library split between multiple drives?

I'd like to have about 1/3 my library on my laptop, and leave the rest on my external drive, so that I have some music available when I'm travelling, but don't fill up my (small) laptop drive.
I know I can just move some of the files in Windows Explorer, and leave "Consolidate Library" unchecked.
However, I'd like to preserve the play counts. So, is there anyway to do this from within iTunes?

Run the itunes consolidate command so it will put all the files in one folder.
Does your existing PC have enough space on either the C: or D: drive to do this?

  • One iTunes...multiple drives...how?

I have 13,000+ "songs" in my iTunes collection. When iTunes was only about "tunes" space wasn't a problem...even with a big collection...provided you put it on an external drive. So far so good. BUT now iTunes is about all kinds of media beyond "tunes." -- particularly when collecting TV Shows or Movies space requirements get out of hand quickly.
If Apple wants iTunes to be a central hub for all things audio/video, then we need some help in managing multiple drives in iTunes. My understanding is that the "iTunes Music Folder" is one folder in one place addressing one drive.
My question is HOW to run iTunes and have it both address and manage multiple drives? I now have over a terrabyte (5X 250Gb) of audio/video files. I am using Quicktime to play much of that because of the limitations of the iTunes Music Folder. I would like to have it all visible and searchable within iTunes.
Sooo...does anyone have knowledge, a suggestion, a reference book or article on my subject line: One iTunes....multiple drives...how?
    Thanks,

You could try Libra - it's an iTunes Library manager that allows you to create multiple libraries... it's available in both mac and PC versions... i use it as i have diffrent music on different external drives (for work purposes)... i've had no problems with this... also if you're using a mac (sorry didn't check) you could try 'Dougs Apple Scripts' - you may find something useful there.....
    Hope it helps!

  • I would like to use one library but with multiple ipods, but because they are my kids Ipods, and they each have their own gift cards, I'd like to be able to add money to their "profiles" without them having their own account - what is the best way

So here is my delima - I want one Ipod account - because I only want one library - since we all like the same music - but my kids, who have their own IPODS, have gift cards, who want to be able to keep track of their balance without the other child affecting the balance - meaning - each gift card should be seperate and not totalled to the single account - Beacuse the library is fairly large, having three libraries of large amounts would be a waste.  I would also like to restrict their purchased to the gift cards only and not my credit card on file.  Does this make sense?  Once this is resolved, I'm assuming they would use their own playlists to copy their favorites to each Ipod.  Or would I set up an account for each child - which I dont want to do, because I dont want them having access to my Credit Card, and only gift card balances.  With multiple accounts, I'm assuming that would also build seperate libraries?  We also have multiple computers, but I share the library to those computers -
What is the best way?  I'd like to be able to add credit to a specific child (birthdays, etc) without the other child being able to access that credit.  For simplicity sake.
We are new to IPODS and lack any MAC skills.
    Thoughts?

Not going to happen the way you want it to.
When you add a gift card balance to the Apple ID, it's available for the Apple ID.
Probably best to create unique Apple ID's for each... this will also make things easier in the future as purchases are eternally tied to the Apple ID they were purchased with.

  • Sharing one library on external NAS drive for multiple users on one ibook

    Hi there,
We (my wife and I) have only the ibook. We would like to use only 1 iphoto library for all of our family photos. I have a network drive with a bigger capacity to store the library.
I read the post by CaptSwing. It seem to easier if library is stored on external drive.
Can anyone provide me with the steps to achieve this.
    Much appreciated,

I now realise that if what I propose will work then "iTunes server" is not required on the NAS. However if the iTunes Media Folder was placed in the "iTunes Server" on the NAS then other media players like the ROKU could access the files?

  • Library Split on Several Drives

My "Movies" and "TV Shows" folders are quite big. I've been wanting to put them on a separate external drive to free up space on my system. However, I really don't want two libraries that I have to bounce back and forth between, especially since I used the Shared Libraries feature on other computers (I've assumed that iTunes will only share the currently open Library...)
So in OS X this would be easy. I would simply create symbolic links for "Movies" and "TV Shows" in my iTunes Library, mapping over to the new external drive.
    e.g.
    ln -s /Users/me/Music/iTunes/Movies/ /Volumes/Storage/Movies/
In Vista, this is not quite so easy. A shortcut doesn't work due to the .lnk extension. So I tried used the mklink command to create a Directory Junction.
    e.g.
    mklink /J Movies G:\Movies
This works... the link is created, and in my Library I can open all my movies! That is until I add one or make a change. I have iTunes set to manage my Library purely for the simplicity of managing such a large library. It seems that iTunes has a problem with the fact that "Movies" is a Directory Junction instead of an actual Folder - but only when writing an update. If I add the file, it gets copied to the right drive so the Junction works, but once I rename the file, I have to run the mklink command again to recreate the Junction.
Has anyone had any success with such a Library setup?

    Hi!
Maintaining a volume with a backup operating system is a good idea and will come in handy should your startup drive go awry. However, a backup OS should be one that is installed or cloned from the same computer, versus one which was originally installed on another model. Systems from other models may have different drivers installed and don't always run well on a different Mac.
To eliminate these systems, use the Erase option in Disk Utility to reformat the volumes and free up the space. You might consider using the option to overwrite zeros to the volume when you do this. This is accessed by clicking on the Security Options button in the Erase window. This option will effectively remove the data on the drive, rather than simply erasing the directory for the data. It will also map out any bad sectors which may be present, preventing their future use and insuring against possible data corruption caused by bad sectors.
Be sure to examine the files on the volumes before you erase them, in case there's something you may want or need to save.

  • In Garageband, how does one add silence between multiple music sections on 1 single track?

Currently I have a bunch tracks that need to be exported in order for the mixing engineer to mix in his Protools program.
Problem: I did a lot of cutting and pasting with in the tracks. So there are spaces in a track that need silence added, so that when I export them into protools, all the tracks start at 0 (Time) and end at 3 minutes and 54 seconds.
What is the most efficient way to add this silence and ensure that every track is 3 minutes and 54 seconds long?

The duplication is unnecessary. Exporting creates a duplicate of the file. So now you'll have a duplicate of a duplicate. Exporting is not "working on" a file.
No it's not merging, it's exporting from one to the Finder and into another. No matter what lose something. If you export the Original you leave behind all the work you've done in iPhoto. If you export anything else, you lose the non-destructive editing and the ability to revert to the original. With merging you preserve that work. Yes, you can trash the old Library when you have completed the manoevre but no it's not the same thing as merging.
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue. But in brief:
Current gets you the iPhoto Preview, used for sharing via media browsers. It's a jpg, medium quality missing metadata. Original gets the file you imported, unchanged and then you can export different version of the current version at different qualities. If you choose to export anything except the Original you do not get a Raw. There's no such thing as an "edited Raw", and you lose the connection between the original and the exported version. That means you've taken a non-destructive workflow and turned it into a destructive one.
The Tiff will certainly be higher qulaity and less likely to suffer generational loss in future editing but the file sizes are vast, often more than 10 times the size of the jpeg.
Put it this way, it would be cheaper to buy Library Manager than the disk you'll need to contain all the Tiffs. Unless you plan on a lot of editing, I'd go for a high quality jpeg as a reasonable compromise.
    To be clear:
So, I guess my new question is, how can I edit the Raw image and keep it in a RAW format that IPhoto recognizes so that I can reprocess without any loss at a future time, or is it that once you edit a RAW image, then it is no longer a RAW image?
Once you edit a Raw it can no longer be a Raw. End of.

  • Is it possible to have one library used between two users?

Hello, I am setting up a friend's computer to have a seperate user for him and for his wife. The computer has been in use for about a year with just one user. Adding the second one makes sense for everything they use the computer for--except iPhoto. They have roughly 11,000 images in the library and want to be able to access, edit, export, etc them from whichever user is logged on. They would like it to work so that when one user adds images to the library, the other user has access to them as well. I looked into the sharing photos option, but it seems to restrict you to read only access when viewing shared libraries. Any suggestions on the best option for them? They are using a dual G5 Tower running iPhoto 5.0.4

    Hey,
    saw this in macworld:
(I haven't tried this, but it does indicate that permissions include read and write)
    Family Album
My son and I share an iMac at home. Is there a way for us to use the same iPhoto library?—Kiki Mulliner
With the proper privileges, this can be done with aliases. It works this way:
Choose the most up-to-date iPhoto Library folder (located at your user folder/Pictures) and move it to the Shared folder inside the Users folder at the root level of the hard drive. Click on the iPhoto Library folder, press Command-I to call up the iPhoto Library Info window, click on the Ownership & Permissions triangle, and then click on the Details triangle below. Select Read & Write from the Access pop-up menu directly beneath the Group pop-up menu, select Read & Write from the Others pop-up menu, and then close the Info window. Hold down the Command and option keys and drag the iPhoto Library folder back to the Pictures folder to create an alias.
Switch to your son’s user account, change the name of his iPhoto Library to something like iPhoto Library Old (in case you want to use this library again), open the Shared folder within the Users folder, and Command-option-drag that folder’s iPhoto Library folder to your son’s Pictures folder to create an alias.

  • Sharing iTunes music AND library files between multiple users in Windows XP

My wife and I share the main computer and both use iTunes, each of us with our own iPod. While Apple covers how to share your music directory itself (which I did when iTunes was first installed by making the music directory C:\music), it doesn't allow you to share the library files--so, for example, if you added a playlist in one account it doesn't sync with the other.
Microsoft has an app called Sync Toy which allows you to keep any set of files/folders on a Windows box synchronized with another set. I use Sync Toy to run a scheduled task each day in the middle of the night to sync the files in the iTunes directory in our %homepath%\My Music folders with each other--the most recently updated one will be synchronized.
Just thought I'd share this tidbit of info since I haven't seen it posted before and it's saved my wife and I a lot of time.
Hope this helps someone out there.

That is one way to do it. There is another way, which is only slightly more difficult, but which you might find more attractive.
Basically, iTunes expects to find your library files in the "My Music/iTunes" folder. However, "My Music" is a special system folder, its location is defined by Windows.
If you download TweakUI, you can use it to set where your My Music folder is. So, if you create a folder that both you and your wife can access, and then set both of your My Music folders to be that folder, then you will have a shared library. No syncronization needed, changes you make to one will happen to the other because you both have the same library files.
Only downside to this is that you can't use Fast User Switching and thus have both people logged in and using iTunes at the same time, because while one of you has the library open, the other can't access it until you close it.
    It works fine.

  • One IDOC split to multiple IDOC's

Scenario is in ECC 6.0 and SAP PI 7.0 .
SAP is sending Custom IDOC to PI 7 and PI 7 is sending that to receiver system.
The custom IDOC sometimes contains more than 250 segments and receiver system is not able to process IDOC's with more than 250 segments. Receiver system is having this limitation.
    QNS :
    (1) What are options to restrict IDOC's creation to 250 segments in SAP
    OR
    (2) Can it be taken care at SAP PI 7.0 end. Like 1 doc is coming to PI with more than 250 segments and Can PI break this into multiple idoc's of max 250 segment length so that no data loss is there.
Your suggestions are needed for both options.
    Thanks in advance..

    Try out this mapping-
You need use 1:n mapping by making the occurance of target MT to unbounded.
    Idoc -> Index(context,increment1)-> Division by n(250)->floor->SplitByValue->collapseContext->TargetMT
Segment ->Index(context,increment1)-> Division by n(250)->floor->SplitByValue->Target Segment
Iam not sure on how to build this logic in SAP.But the effective way is to implement this restriction in SAP before IDoc reaching PI.

  • Best Backup Practices - One Library vs Individual Project Libraries?

Hello, I'm new to Final Cut Pro X. I have several completed projects that I've been backing up to an external hard drive. However, at first I thought it would be best to create one library on the backup drive and back up my events to this one library. But I've second guessed myself and have been instead creating a new library for each event and then backing up the event to it's own library. This seems less prone to loading issues on large projects and less likely for multiple events to become corrupted if the library gets hosed.
How do you guys manage backups and what do you guys think are the best practices, one backup library or a separate library for each event.

There has been a lot said about the"best practice" for backups.
In reality there is no right or wrong, but having all your backup eggs/Libraries in one basket can be risky.
I use your later suggested method as it suits my style of work.
I prefer to have each Project, Event/s in there own Library. Self contained unit.
When the Project is done the complete Library is copied to another drive, plus if it's important another drive is used for a second backup.
What you have to work through is what gear you have or need to aquire to make your backup method secure and easy to do.
Nowadays you need lots of drive space and thankfully Terabytes are cheaper than ever.

  • Splitting Mirrored Raid Drives

    Hello,
I have two external drives that are striped with one mirroring the other. I want to split or separate them without losing data. Can I just continue using the primary drive that comes up on the desktop (without plugging in the mirrored drive) without any problem? If I separate the mirrored drive, I presume I will need to erase it, and will not be able to access the media on it, correct? Is there any way to access the media on it and use it without erasing media?
I tried to access just the mirrored drive to see if it showed up in Disk Utility, which it did not. Then, after plugging in both drives, Disk Utility is now repairing raid slices...for another 8 hours. Did I damage my media?
If one can never access the data on a mirrored drive, then what is the benefit of it being a "backup"??
    Thank you in advance,
    Video Editor

Is the RAID striped or mirrored. You said they were "striped" with one "mirroring" the other, but this is incorrect terminology. Either the RAID is striped or mirrored. You can create a mirrored RAID from two identical striped RAIDs, but an individual array is either striped or mirrored.
If you truly had a mirrored RAID, then separating the drives would not affect the data as each drive simply has a copy of the other. However, if you truly had a striped array that you separated, then your data may be lost completely because each drive actually has one half of the data and the other drive has the other half. Each file is literally split between each drive. Lose a drive and you lose the data.

  • Any way to split library between multiple hard drives?

I recently purchased an Apple TV and started 'really' using iTunes for all of my music and videos. Is there a way I can keep my music on my iMac's hard drive and my videos on an external without switching libraries and still keep it (at least the video hard drive) organized?

I had the same problem awhile back...the way I got around this was to create 2 separate libraries with a simple way to switch between the two...I"ve got one library on my Local Powerbook drive which I named "local" and one on my ext drive that I named "External"..Download the script "iTunes Library Manager" by Doug Adams.. http://www.dougscripts.com/itunes/itinfo/ituneslibrarymanager.php
It's a simple little script that will help you switch between the two. You wil have to move your whole library over to your HD first...then just move the albums/genres/whatever you want back to the local library on you Laptop. Just follow the directions with the script. You should be fine

  • Multiple Hard Drives - One Library

Hi, I've been doing some looking around here already for a good solution, but have yet to find it, including some of the existing threads dealing with similar issues.
So here is my scenario: Laptop with a hard drive that is almost full, need to move two thirds to an external drive, however I need to maintain the integrity of the whole library (current playlists, playcounts etc), none of this option key launching stuff, and separate libraries. My concerns, with doing some initial testing, is that itunes still asks for the location of the music files when they have been moved to another drive, I don't want to and shouldn't have to re-locate each file individually (30+gbs). It seems like I either have to do one thing or the other can't do both. Move everything and re-direct it to the new location and re-import to the local drive, or go the option click route which I don't really want to (and I would lose some of my library info in the process). Is what I'm asking to do even possible with the constraints of splitting an existing library of music, with one library file & multiple drives?
