One Macbook, two users, one email account

Is there anyway for two users who share use of a single macbook (two user accounts) to share a single email account using mail?
Conceptually, I imagine that this could be achieved by locating the mailboxes/folders in the public folder accessible by both users.
How do I change the settings within Mail to "point" to this folder?

Just some more notes for setting up the same mailaddress on two accounts:
1. If you use POP3 leave messages on the server - otherwise emails received by account A won't appear in account B. On the other hand, leaving mail on server may lead to overquota. If both accounts check on a regular basis, leave them on the server for e.g. 7 days.
2. I would prefer using IMAP, if supported by your mail provider. That way all folders and mails are stored serverside, and the displayed content will be the same for both accounts.

  • Two MacBooks, Two Users, One MobileMe Family account

My wife and I both have MacBooks (different ones). We have a MobileMe Family account. Each laptop uses are unique MobileMe names, address books, calendars, etc... (i.e. I have an account, she has a MobileMe account). We both also have our own iPhone linked to these accounts respectively.
We also have a 'joint' MobileMe account (email and calendar only). This same joint account is the iTunes account for both of us.
We are still on MobileMe. I see lots of people having problems.
One problem I anticipate we will have is: How will iCloud know how to sync our accounts between hers, mine, and ours? There apparently is only one setting: ON and OFF.
We want our individual MobileMe accounts syncing email and calendars from our MacBooks and iPhones -- but our Joint account (iTunes, email, calendar) syncing to us both.
Is this going to be a mess on iCloud?
Thanks for any tips on how to better prepare for the conversion.

    Roger,
    Thanks for the reply.
I think I understand what you are saying.
I am wondering why the iCloud would be device-dependent. For instance, we have in our home two MacBooks, two iPhones, one iPad, one AppleTV. So, somewhat preciently knowing we'd eventually have more Apple devices, our main account (esp for iTunes) is our joint account. Joint email, calendar, and iTunes/iBooks content. Works great.
So, if we had a family with children with their own accounts, would it then not be possible for each person to have their own accounts and iCloud syncing off of, say, one home computer?
I recall in Steve Jobs's presentation that they 'demoted' the computer to just a device served by iCloud (much like the iPhone, iPad, etc... So, if an iPad can have multiple MobileMe accounts, as a MacBook may, why couldn't iCloud sync them all?
Thanks for the instruction -- just trying to figure out how to get things set up when we go to iCloud (we haven't turned it on yet for this reason).
I see in the discussions forums loads of issues from people switching over.
Maybe the right way to do it is each MacBook retains their accounts. Same with the iPhones. But turn off the other, shared accounts. Turn on iCloud...let it see everything, get synced: Computer A with iPhone A with iCloud Account A (email and contacts only). And Computer B with iPhone B with iCloud Account B (email and contacts only). Then add in the shared iCloud Account (email/calendar/iTunes only).
    Thoughts?

  • One Computer, Two Users, One Address Book

This question came up in the dim and distant past without a solution and I was wondering if there was one to it in the here and now.
My wife and I share 1 MacBookPro
We each have a user account.
I have a full .Mac account
She has a .Mac Email Account
We would like to have only one address book or at least have the same info in each of our respective address books. (not too big a request?)
I just can't find out how to do this other than her having a full .Mac account too which is just plain expensive overkill just to sync two address books!
Is there a way to do this please?

It can certainly be done. If you are sharing one computer, then with the right permissions and linking, you can use the same address book.
All the Address Book information is in a folder Library/Application Support/AddressBook in a user's home directory.
If you make an alias of all the files in that folder from your directory and put them in the same folder in your wife's home directory, and then ensure that both you and your wife have access to read and write all of those files, it should work.
As a result when either of you is using Address Book, you would be using the same files and the same data. Each will see the updates of the other.
If the permissions are not right, AddressBook will hang, and you have to force quit, but otherwise, it seems to work OK.

  • One Mac, Two Users, One shared Aperture Library

    Hello
I recently bought a new DSLR camera. As the camera is much more advanced comapred to my former one I also wanted to improve my editing capabilties by switching from iPhoto to Aperture.
I (USER 1) started Aperture, created a new library in the same directory my iPhoto library is stored in, chose "Import -> iPhoto library -> keep files in the original location"...a couple of hours later the library was indexed and usable.
Now I wanted to take the next step. To optimize disk storage and to avoid duplicates the iPhoto library was used by two users, the imports, edits... one user made were available to the other user (on the same Mac) and vice versa. The idea was to do the same under Aperture. So USER 1 assigned "read & write" rights on my library file to USER 2 as well (as I said, file is stored in the same location as the iPhoto library where 2 users, 1 library already worked). I signed in as USER 2, started Aperture and first had to create a new library file. Then I changed the library file to USER 1's (shared) library. This worked in prnciple, however "Projects", "Faces"... were not displayed. Aperture showed as many blank fields as USER 1's library contains pictures. Some pictures were displayed after a couple of minutes but the system didn't appear as if it would also try to make the remaining pictures available. So I checked access rights on the library file again (USER 2 had all rights required), closed Aperture on USER 2, reopened Aperture under USER 2 and got the message, that access rights are not sufficient to access the library file of USER 1.
What am I doing wrong? Could it be that what is possible under iPhoto (2 users, 1 Mac, 1 shared library file) is not possible under Aperture?
Thanks for your help in advance.

    Update:
I installed Windows via Bootcamp, added a second partition to the system. It worked, Windows took ages to download all the required updates but anyway, it worked. So I started up again with OS X Lion, now splitting my OS X partition into two (than had 2 OS X and 1 Windows partition) and adding all my iTunes content to the second. Then I created a new Apperture libary on that second partition, imported all the projects into it and, hey, it worked as well, no files showed "unsupported file format" anymore. So I thought I was through it all...but only until I tried to start from the Windows partition again, it didn't work. Under OS X I could see the Windows partition and all it's content, however the Bootmanager didn't provide the option to startup with Windows. So I had to clean the second OS X partition again, deleting the Bootcamp partition and then doing all the painfull Windows installation again. Now I'm at the point where I have 1 Mac OS X Lion partiton and a Bootcamp partition containing Windows 7...
Now my question: Could it be, that Bootcamp 4 under OS X lion can not run Windows on another partition than the second one? In other words: If I now split my OS X partition into two to have all the iTunes and Apperture content on this second partition, will the third partition (Bootcamp) again not work anylonger? The Bootcamp help is not very precise in this point, it only talks about the installation process of Windows 7 that is only running when there is only one OS X partition, it does not at all say that - after installing Windows on the Bootcamp partition - the OS X partition must not be changed to prevent Windows from "dying". Does anyone out there have any experience on this, what will happen if I now split my OS X partiton into two with the second partition only containing iTunes and Apperture content and "ignore ownership" enabled? WIll Windows die again or did I do something wrong with my first try?
Thanks for your help in advance.

When I log in every thing works fine when I close lightroom and  log out. She logs in lightroom loads the catalog and the files but the images are all blank.

  • One iMAc, two users - One iMove location?

    Well, hello all.
Just taken the plunge to the 'white side' for the first time and currently in the process of setting up my lovely new machine.
I am running two accounts on the iMAc - one for me, one for my wife. I would like us both to be able to access one iMovie folder instance of movies, in the same way that I have set up iPhoto [on an external hard drive]. I happily accept that I can only have one instance of iMovie open at a time, but it woudl be much more convenient if we can both access the same Projects.
I am drawing blanks on how to set this up both by googling it and also by seaching through here. Is this because it is not possible, or am I being dumb?

The answer is to use your hard drive.
The hard drive must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled), not FAT32.
You can import new events from your camcorder to the external drive by selecting it on the import screen.
For events that are already on your internal drive, open iMovie and click VIEW/EVENTS BY DISK. You should see an icon for your hard drive in the event library list. Then hold down the command key while dragging the icon for the event to the icon for the drive.
You can move projects to the external drive in a similar fashion.
Check out iMovie's Help. You will find info on moving events, info on moving projects, and info on the Consolidate command.

Try connecting the iPad to the computer that you do not want to WiFi sync with and uncheck the WiFi sync option in iTunes. Then click on Apply. Reboot the iPad and see if that does the trick.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • I synced two of my email accounts via gmail's POP3 thing. But now my iphone's gmail inbox shows a random selection of emails (not most recent ones that are in my inbox). How can I make my iphone inbox match what I see when I log on using a PC?

I synced two of my email accounts via gmail's POP3 capabilities. But now my iphone's gmail inbox only shows a random selection of emails (i.e. right now it is May 31, 2013 but the emails in my inbox are a couple from Nov 12, a few from Oct 12, and then some way older than that and so on.When I log into my gmail from a computer, I see all my emails in the logical, standard order. How can I make my iphone inbox match what I see when I log on using a PC?

If you're trying to decide between using POP and IMAP, we encourage you to use IMAP.
Unlike POP, IMAP offers two-way communication between your web Gmail and your email client. This means when you log in to Gmail using a web browser, actions you perform on email clients and mobile devices (ex: putting mail in a 'work' folder) will instantly and automatically appear in Gmail (ex: it will already have a 'work' label on that email the next time you sign in).
IMAP also provides a better method to access your mail from multiple devices. If you check your email at work, on your mobile phone, and again at home, IMAP ensures that new mail is accessible from any device at any given time.
Finally, IMAP offers a more stable experience overall. Whereas POP is prone to losing messages or downloading the same messages multiple times, IMAP avoids this through two-way syncing capabilities between your mail clients and your web Gmail.
That is from the page that you linked- does highlighted part of message ring a bell?

Log in to your account, and move all your files to your home folder. No other users should be able to access them there and they won't show up with a Spotlight search.
Make sure your kids' account(s) do not have admin privileges.

  • One Computer, Two Users, Shared Library?

I have searched around and haven't been able to find a direct answer to this...
My wife and I have different user profiles. I use aperture for all our photo management. She just wants to have access to the library to make slideshows and DVD's (from her user profile).
Can we set it up so that both users can have access to one, central, aperture library?
    If so, how?
    If no, why?
    Thanks for any help.

    WE HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM.
ONE IMAC TWO USER ACCOUNTS WELL 4 IF YOU COUNT THE KIDS. THAT'S WHY WE NEED TO LIMIT ACCESS.
I'VE BEEN USING APERTURE UNDER MY USER PROFILE. I THEN SET UP APERTURE IN MY WIFES DOCK. SEEMED TO WORK AT FIRST, THEN PREVIEWS WOULD NOT OPEN GRAYED AND RED ? MARKS. THEN IT STARTED TO OPEN PREVIEWS AT A SNAILS PACE. WHEN I WENT BACK TO MY USER ACCOUNT THE FOLDERS AND PROJECTS HAD ALL BEEN CHANGED.
WE WANT THE LIBRARY TO BE THE SAME FOR BOTH OF US, SO WE CAN BOTH WORK ON IT A DIFFERENT TIMES FROM OUR OWN USER ACCOUNT. ONE COMPUTER ONE LIBRARY ONE USER AT ONE TIME. I DON'T WANT TO HAVE ANOTHER HARD DISK AT THIS TIME. WE HAVE A 500GIG AND THAT'S BIG ENOUGH TO DO WHAT WE WANT .
I THOUGHT OF SETTING UP AN ADDITIONAL USER CALLED APERTURE4 BUT THAT'S NOT HOW WE WANT TO USE OUR PHOTO'S. I THINK IPHOTO WAS ACTUALY WORKING BETTER. WE ARE USING VERSION 1.5.2
I GUESS THE OTHER BIG QUESTION IS HOW SHOULD WE SET THIS UP. WE ALREADY HAVE OVER 1100 PHOTOS AND IT'S BEEN ONE WEEK
    THANKS , MARK

I have 2 Macbooks each with an account for me and one for my wife. I use one Macbook logged in with my account and my wife uses the other Macbook only logged in on her account. We both make regular time-machine back-ups each on a separate external disk. Is it possible to update her account on my macbook using her external disk without overwriting my stuff on the same Macbook and vice versa?

Time Machine does not do individual accounts. It records the complete drive. So if you were to use her TM backup on your Mac it would make your Mac just like hers. Both yours and her account on your MAC.
Just copy the missing files over from her Mac to yours. If there are differennt programs on each then they would need to be installed on both.

  • Have two users one is a test one is mine all the sudden mine lost the applications folder and now when i open my user it opens but wont respond to anything and i have to power it down and restart any clues

I have two users one is mine, one is a test i set up with apple care. Everything was working fine then i lost my applications folder icon on my user. I have been using the Finder to open applications, now when i open my user the mouse travels but i'm not able to get a respond from anything ,it's almost like its frozen. I have power off and restart and use the test user. Anyone have a clue or any ideas?

You can find the serial number either in About this Mc in the Menu bar under the , or it should be on a sticker under the foot of the machine.
If you have the install discs, try booting from them, holding down the c key and then using Disk Utility to check the drive.
You can also boot into Safe mode
To start up into Safe Mode (to "Safe Boot"), do this:
       1. Be sure the computer is shut down.
       2. Press the power button.
       3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key.
Tip: The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
       4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple and progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.3.9, you will see "Safe Boot" on the Mac OS X startup screen.
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in automatically.
    Please post back with results,
To leave Safe Mode in any version of Mac OS X, restart the computer normally, without holding any keys during startup.

I recently upgraded my iMac 17" G5 to a 24" Core 2 Duo and I would like to set it up with one administrator account since it is only myself and my girlfriend that will be using this computer. Can I have this one user account and use Mail for both of our Mobile Me accounts, but not have Mail group everything into one inbox? I know I can set up the multiple accounts in Mail, but it then groups both of our inboxes into one. Is there any way to separate our Mail accounts without creating separate user accounts and having to switch each time one of us sits down?

No. that's what separate user accounts are for. either use that or have all mail in the same inbox. however, the whole inbox has submailboxes fro each email account and those are separate.

  • Sharing Apps - Two Iphones, one imac, two user accounts, one itunes account

I've had an iphone for a long time and now my wife recently bought one. We have one imac in the house and we each have our own user accounts (ie we switch back and forth to our own sides). My itunes library and iphoto library are stored on an external hard drive. I have authorized my itunes account on my wife's side and have enabled home sharing. I want to be able to sync my iphone on my side and have my wife sync her's on her side. I also want my wife to be able to sync some of the apps that I have purchased over the years. When I sync my wife's phone on her side she has access to all the photos but can't see any of the apps. What do I need to do in order to give her access to the apps?
    Thank you in advance

Hi, I am glad I found exactly the same question that I wanted to ask.
I am going through the same thing right now:
    two iphones4,
    single mac mini,
    two accounts.
Many many apps on my account only.
She wants to sync my applications to her iphone on her user account side, but they are not in her itunes library.
I thought I needed the family pack for that, but it seems that I've just wasted my money, as the apps sharing is not included in the family pack. Could anybody please answer do I understand this correctly or not?
