One mail client's outgoing messages flagged as SPAM

Hi again,
I have a new problem that has cropped up. Our company is multi-location. 8 of our locations are able to relay outgoing mail through our mail server with no problems whatsoever. Since upgrading clamav, amavisd-new and spamassassin (thanks topicdesk.com!), I have one remote client for whom every outgoing message is flagged as Spam by spamassassin and bounced. Here is the output from our mail server:
Content type: Spam
Internal reference code for the message is 05499-02/NFMMwedgHcWi
First upstream SMTP client IP address: [xx.xxx.xxx.153]

The only major difference in this location is that it's running a new Intel iMac with Snow Leopard. All the other clients are PPC's with Leopard.

As it turns out, the problem was with the router configuration. Instead of having the computer on a private network behind the router, the computer was given the public IP address. I'm not sure how this relates to how the message and its header are interpreted by spamassassin, but reconfiguring the network and using NAT to allow incoming traffic to the computer seems to have resolved the problem.
I would love for someone who knows about this stuff to respond, although technically my problem is resolved.
Thanks for reading!

Tunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.
Downloading (using iOS or computer) past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not available in all countries; apps, books (not audiobooks), music, t.v. shows, and movies (some - not all studios have permitted this). Movies currently available in the USA only. Downloading previously purchased movies and TV shows requires iTunes 10.6 or later.  Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list (e.g., ringtones), or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid.  Apple notes it is your responsibility to back up your purchases.
Select the store on the left side of iTunes.
Click on Purchased on the right side under Quick Links.
You can re-download your available previous purchases.

Thanks Dean Pugh at [email protected]

This is the outbound spam filter that Verizon implemented a while back, and is unrelated to the port 25 change. Something within the message itself is triggering the block. You can visit the verizon.net/spamfaq page listed in the error for more information on why the system was implemented, etc.
You can send "false positives" (messages that were caught as spam, but should not have been) to [email protected] as an attachment for review. The message will eventually be reviewed and they will make changes to the filter if they deem it necessary, but you will NOT get anything back regarding status or outcome.
Some troubleshooting steps you can try:
If you have a signature, try removing one line at a time from it and attempting to send the message again. Some signatures look like "ads" to the filters, apparently.
If you are using a pop3 client (Outlook, Outlook Express, etc.) try sending your message from the verizon.net website. If this resolves the issue, then it is something that your client is adding to the message that is causing it to be blocked.
If the Subject line of your message has a whole bunch of "Fwd: Fwd: Re: Fwd:" try removing some of them.
If a forum member gives an answer you like, give them the Kudos they deserve. If a member gives you the answer to your question, mark the answer as Accepted Solution so others can see the solution to the problem.

  • How to limit mail size of outgoing messages

I would like to limit the sizr out outgoing messages in SUN JES. Is there any attribute I can modify so that each user have same limit size other than change it individually for each user?

You can handle the limit of any mail at MTA-level with the blocklimit, noblocklimit, sourceblocklimit directives in the channel definitions (in imta.cnf)
Give a look at the MTA configuration details at
    http://docs.sun.com/source/819-0106/mta_config.html
I think that you may want to try something like sourceblocklimit directive.

  • Mail 1.2 - Outgoing messages are not sent, just pile up in outbox.

    Hi -
My Dad is in Maryland and has an iMac with Mail 1.2 (he won't let me upgrade him!). His outoing smtp keeps defaulting to an old .mac account of mine, rather than to his earthlink account. Then they all just pile up in his outbox.
When I try to walk him through it from here (California, w/ mac 10.4.x), it goes like this:
    Me: Dad, go to Mail>Preferences>Accounts>Outgoing SMTP>little arrows drop-down menu>Remove.
Dad: There is no Remove or Edit there.
So I can't tell him how to remove the erroneous SMTP because I can't see his screen and have tried everything I can think of but no luck.
Anyone have Mail 1.2 and can walk me through the drill so I can tell him?
    Thanks,
    dstein3

First, have him go to Mail>Preferences>Accounts
Then have him locate his account and your account on the left.
Have him click and drag the .mac account below his account in the list.
This will solve the default setting of mail going out from your account when he clicks on the Inbox.
Removing the smtp server for .mac may not even work for him, especially if the account is active.
Instead click on "advanced" and there should be a check box for "enable this account", deselect the box. This disables the account without deleting any mail.

  • Routing outgoing messages to a spam filter

    Hi
I need to configure messaging server to route all the outgoing messages to two IP addresses of our spam filters. Where that needs to be configured? Thanks

    alchalel wrote:
I need to configure messaging server to route all the outgoing messages to two IP addresses of our spam filters. Where that needs to be configured? ThanksYou can use the daemon keyword to route outgoing messages to a dedicated address e.g.
    ! tcp_local
tcp_local smtp mx single_sys remotehost inner switchchannel identnonenumeric subdirs 20 maxjobs 7 pool SMTP_POOL
maytlsserver maysaslserver saslswitchchannel tcp_auth missingrecipientpolicy 0 loopcheck daemon <hostname>
tcp-daemonIf you want to route outgoing messages to more then one system then you need to create an MX record that lists both of the addresses and then use this MX address instead of the <hostname> in the above example. The daemon keyword does NOT accept multiple relay addresses.

  • Mail client says "The Message Could Not be Moved"

    10.6.8 server on Mac Mini
doing DNS, AFP, Mail, iCal, OD for 8 users
Clients are all 10.6.8 on Mac Mini
    Mail is IMAP
Mail is well behaved 98% of the time
But sometimes, on a client, when I try and move a message fro mmy inbox to another mailbox, it says "the message coudl not be moved to mailbox xxxxx"
If I try again immediately afterwards, it always works
So I doubt it is anything like a corrupt envelope index, because that would result in persistant problems.
It's as if the mail server isn't listening momentarily.
This is a fairly fresh build of the OS from DVD.  Previous build did exactly the same ting.
Woudl be very grateful for any ideas.

To verify the server DNS, launch Terminal.app from Applications > Utilities on the OS X Server box and issue the non-destructive diagnostic command:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
The clients would have references only to your local DNS server(s), visible via the client Network Preferences settings.  (These DNS server settings are usually either hard-set in the client, or acquired from DHCP by the client.)
You'll want to use Console.app or direct access to the /var/log directory (on the server), and see what gets logged when the mail message move operation fails.
As a preemptive operation, I'd also rebuild the mailboxes involved (on the client(s) involved).  I've seen a few mailbox corruptions over the years, but not one that caused this behavior.

  • How to limit mail size of outgoing messages per domain/user

    Hello,
i want to limit the size of a mail a user can send. For inbound mail there are attributes in the directory service: mailDomainMsgMaxBlocks and mailMsgMaxBlocks.
But these limitations only enforce the size of incoming mail.
I've read the messaging server admin guide but all i could find out is that i could limit the size of outgoing mail via a channel.
For me this solution ist not granular enough. I want to set the outgoing mail size limit per user. Furthermore i don't know the impact of configuring 200+ channels for enforcing individual outgoing mail size limits per hosted domain.
Does anybody know a solution for this problem? Maybe i've read over something. Or can anybody tell me the performance impact of 200+ channels at least?
    Thank you very much,
    af_inet

    Hi jay_plesset,
thanks a lot for your clarifications.
Why would you need 200 channels? That sounds like a
very strange setup. Setting outbound max size per
user sounds like a very unusual demand, too.Let me explain: I got several departments who control their email settings in the messaging server via a webapp. So they can add, delete and modify users. They can manage mailing lists and so on. It's really a cool tool :-) I want this thing to be as granular as an own mailserver for the department would be. So it would be cool when the webapp writes an attribute like maxMsgBlocks in the DS and the thing is done.
I don't understand why you guys could do the stuff for inbound but not for outbound. Is there a technical reason or is it just because it seems strange? :-)
If you REALLY need something like that, 200 channels
would need a POOL of at least 200 jobs in order to
reliably run, and that's likely to need lots of
system memory.I think that's not the way i want to go.
Consider a custom channel, or something like that,
that does an LDAP lookup for setting message size on
sending. You'd need to enforce smtp authentication,
so you know who your messages are coming from, first,
and then you could proceed from there. This is not a
trivial setup.Sounds interesting. Any documentation hints for custom channels?
    Thanks again for your reply,

  • Mail issues--disappearing outgoing message text and...

OK ... I am just a bit irritated. I have encountered a few problems lately with Mail where it acts as if the smtp server I use won't accept the connection and/or password (that is 100% correct). Sometimes the problem goes away on its own. But that was just what led to my primary problem today is.
I put together a rather lengthy email - took about 30 minutes to compose, that was of some importance. I click send...
After about a minute, I see the problem above telling me to pick a different outgoing mail server. Ummm.. no. The smtp server is working fine, and I tested it on another machine to be sure. So back to my iBook. I click "try again later".
Well, it tries again a bit later - and get the same notice. But I also see something about my email has changed --- it is BLANK! All of that work - gone. I did not edit it, nor did I delete the email's content myself. It somehow vanished into oblivion when it was sitting waiting to try again. I didn't even use this machine in the time in between.
I'm none too happy. Is this a new Microsoft-like "feature"? I know, I'm being sarcastic - but I am a bit frustrated. I switched to Apple Mail from MS Entourage because I was trying to walk away from MS software. It seems that the problems I have been having with Mail (and also Safari) have cropped up after the last few security updates and application updates.

    Hi Michael,
I certainly think Mail is a strange bird myself, but most don't have this problem. I only use it to help out here, I use these two...
    Eudora...

    Thunderbird...
    http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/
Have you done any Disk/OS maintenance lately?

  • Why is my mail app not sending outgoing messages?

When using mail application, my outgoing messages remain in my outbox.   If I log into my email through a browser, my outgoing messages will send.
I assumed my new MacBook was setup correctly from the Apple Store.
    Thanks for any assistance.

Check your outgoing (SMTP) mail in mail preferences, make sure that it is set to your mail server and not none or something else. After upgrades, these things can get messed up.

  • ML server: more than one mail relay

How can I add more than one mail relay for outgoing mail through ISP?
In the server.app I can only add one mail-relay. My ISP recommends more

First I've heard of that recommendation....
Unless there's something rather odd going on here — cases such as very flaky ISP mail servers or very flaky network connections to the mail servers, such that you're finding a need to redirect your own mail client host settings to different mail servers at the same ISP, for instance — or if you're going to be sending out massive volumes of mail — I would leave it at one host, and see if there's an issue.
Mail servers are designed to retry for transient outages, so most errors should retry.
Postfix allows one relayhost, unless you want to get into sender_dependent_relayhost_maps and that's not particularly common.
With static IP and correct DNS, you could eliminate the relayhost setting entirely.  That's a typical approach with mail servers.

  • Completely delete Exchange account from Mail client on Mac

I'm having a problem with a several e-mail messages in my Mail client.  These messages seem "stuck" in that whenever I try to delete these messages, I get an error message in Mail that says:
An error occurred while moving messages to mailbox “Trash — Exchange”.
I named the account Exchange.  These messages are NOT on my Exchange mail server anymore - I also access my mail from an Outlook client as well and these "stuck" messages do not appear in Outlook which is pulling directly from Exchange.
My first attempt to resolve was to delete the account from the Mail client and set it up again.  All of the folders and e-mail messages re-appeared almost instantly so it obviously didn't go out to the Exchange server and pull down over 100K e-mail messages in 30 seconds.
Then I spoke to AppleCare.  They directed me to the Library to delete a subfolder in the Mail folder that appeared to contain the messages.  When I emptied the Trash, it appeared that the 100K messages were being deleted.  I went to Mail to setup the account again.  Again, the messages reappeared quickly as before and the problem messages were still there as if they never were deleted.
So now I'm looking for a way to completely the Exchange account and all of its local data from Mail.  I want the Mail client to start from scratch and go out to the Exchange server to get the data like the account had never been setup on this Mac before.  I'd also opt for a fresh install of Mail but I have a MBA 11 so I don't have OS media or a DVD drive.
Somewhere Mail is clealry caching info on that account.  It's apparent when I've deleted the account and then re-opened Mail to set it back up the first time.  Whenever the dialog box appears, it remembers my Exchange e-mail account information in the field so it's obviously pulling that information from somewhere locally on the Mac, not from the server.

As you say, removing the Exchange account on Mail really doesn't delete it. It's caching something because of how quickly it finds the folders etc. if you add the account again.
I was having a lot of very strange problems with Mail/Contacts/Calendar and certainly a new user I set up from scratch worked with Mail etc. straight away. I didn't test it for days but within seconds it pulled down all the correct emails and the number of unread tallied with my iPhone which was one of the annoying problems I was having.
One of the things I read elsewhere is how useful doing a Mailbox/Rebuild from within Mail is. I just tried it now on my existing user name and it certainly seems to have helped. It immediately refreshed the Inbox and had it accurate. However, despite having it set to "1 min checking for new mail" after several mins it seems to have hung again and isn't refreshing.
Mail for OSX has caused me a million more problems that for iOS which just works every time. I don't see how Apple can make it work so smoothly on iOS and give loads of problems on OSX.
    Have you tried the Mailbox/Rebuild?

  • Send outgoing messages action buggy?

Could someone confirm the following behavior of the "send outgoing messages action"?
create a workflow consisting of this single action and then create an outgoing message in Mail. run the workflow. Does this send the message you just created? The action description says that if the action has no input, all outgoing messages will be sent out. however, when i run it, nothing happens.

didn't know about the other two but here is one more:
    make new outgoing message
The description says that if text passed to it as input it's included in the message. In fact this does not happen. I've tried every which way i could. I've recently submitted a bug report about it too and it's still open.
