One monitor, many computers

I've got several computers that I'd like to share my 17 inch LCD with, is there a monitor switch for these monitors?

I have a PowerMac with Studio Display sitting next to an iMac G4. I wanted a similar setup, with one mouse and keyboard to switch back and forth between two Macs.
I went with the IOGear USB 2.0 Peripherals Sharing Switch:
http://www.iogear.com/main.php?loc=product&Item=GUB201
This allows me to click a button and swap between the two Macs. I really like it, the only problem I have is putting them to sleep. If I sleep a Mac, then switch the KVM it wakes back up. Sometimes the iMac loses the keyboard too and I have to pull the USB and plug it back in to get it to light up the mouse again. It only happens on the iMac, not the G4 tower so maybe it's just that machine.
The "other Mac" also sees an "Unrecognized Keyboard attached" while the first Mac has the keyboard switched to it under 10.4. I had to use a separate mouse to cancel the keyboard identification wizard to keep it from coming back each time I switched Macs. After that they were both fine.
Little tricky things, but all-in-all better than having two full-sized keyboards with mice on my desk.

  • Problem Logging into only one of many computers

    1. I have two desktop computers. One is hard wired to a linksys router and works great. The other desktop that has a problem logging into my email account. See (5) below. 2. First you must know that I also have an apple mac that is connected via the Router and it also works fine running OSX. 3. I have a Dell Laptop running Vista connected via the Router that runs fine. 4. Have another Dell Laptop running Win 7 is connected via the Router that runs fine. 5. I have this desktop running Win XP pro that is my problem. This is how the problem goes: I get to what appears to the correct login page; Type in the correct user and PW info; execute by clicking on the correct button; Nothing happens; I try several other ways; I click on the "signin" box at the extreme top right and nothing happens; I click on another box that ask for my location and a new window appears asking for my addres and zip code. I eventually get to the email. Now at this moment I look at the top of this my current window and I see that my location is shown and I am signed into verizon to write to you. There is a block that reads "signout". What is going on?

And one more small detail.  After I have this problem there's a crash file in ~Library/Preferences called 'com.apple.iLifeAssetManagement.crqash.plist'.  It's cryptic, but it says:

  • Re: One Too Many Computers Authorized?

I understand that I can deauthorize all my computers once a year and reaurthorize the ones I know I'm using. I'm showing one more authorized computer than I know I have and I don't know where the problem is with that. The help topic directs me to my iTunes accounts pane, but i do not see anything on that page that gives me the option of deauthorizing all computers at once. Any help would be appreciated.
I think this has something to do with my son's friend downloading his iTunes tv shows onto my son's computer. Only way he could do that is with access to my account, right? But why would downloading his stuff onto my computer affect the number of authorizations?
Can a single computer somehow end up with two authorizations?

*The help topic directs me to my iTunes accounts pane, but i do not see anything on that page that gives me the option of deauthorizing all computers at once.*
Once you reach the limit of 5 authorisations you have the option once a year to deauthorise them all in one go from your iTunes account and start over. If you have less than 5 you don't get a deauthorise all option: About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation

If your system crashes or you reinstall your operating system without deauthorising iTunes first, even a single computer can use up your limit of 5 authorisations. See also this article: One computer using multiple iTunes Music Store authorizations

  • One monitor/two computers???

I have a 2005 Cinema Display which I use with my Power Mac G5 desktop. I recently purchased a Macbook Pro (13", 2011) which I would like to connect to my larger monitor from time to time for video editing.
Can I do this in any way without severing the connection to the PowerMac? Or is it simply a matter of unplugging the montior from the desktop, plugging it into my MB Pro with a mini display port? I'd rather not have

Do a google search for "DVI KVM" or "DVI Switch" to find other choices (assuming the above poster is correct that only DVI connections are involved -- I didn't check).

  • How many computers can sync to one ipad?

I teach at a university.  Our department is discussing ordering several iPads (maybe iPod Touches, also) for faculty to share.  Faculty would be creating materials for the classroom and using the iPad in place of written/printed notes and/or for presentations.  The question I raised is how many computers can sync to one iPad?  My assumption is that individual faculty would create such materials on their office or personal computers, then load those materials onto an iPad.

All iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, Touch) are designed to sync with a single iTunes library, i.e. a single computer.
You can sync multiple iOS devices to the same iTunes library (same account) or multiple iOS devices to the same computer with different iTunes accounts and libraries.
In your case, if each individual creates their own material, they can sync it from their iTunes account (library) on their computer.
Also, there are many apps out there that allow you to move files from the cloud to the device, i.e. Box.net, Airstash, Dropbox, etc.  Perhaps you could set that up and have individuals create material, sync it to the cloud and then allow others to access it via the iPad.
I suggest you contact other faculty at other universities that may have done this, perhaps via some faculty forums.

  • Best KVM for using 2 computers with one monitor?

Hi. I am using a Dell U2711 monitor with a main, big, wonderful machine that has an nvidea display card and am considering to get an additional, small machine, to install Linux/GNU, and wondering, to use the one monitor for both computers.
So, can anyone recommend the best KVM switch for these specifications, or what am i to look for in a kvm switch, assuming i'm using CS5.5 Master COllection on the big machine and dont want to lose quality by adding the switch.
    thanks

I've been using the Rosewill RKV-2DVI for about a year with an XP 32 bit machine and a W7 64 bit machine.

Two current activations.  If you need more, then you need to pay for a new license.  ISTR a poster in a similar position a month or so back.  I can't remember if he persauded Adobe to change his licens to a Teams Subscription.  What are you hoping to achieve?

  • Two computers -- one monitor

I have recently purchased a G5 upgrade desktop ... and before I put my old one on the market I need to transfer some files ... with one monitor, that means hooking and rehooking the screen, starting and restarting, etc.
Can't I mount the old one on the desktop of the new and copy files straight from one to the other? I can't remember how to do it --
    Can anyone help me out?
    thanks tons!!
    ana

If you can drag & drop the files, and have a FireWire cable,
you may be able to go into the old Mac via FW Target Disk
Mode (boot the old Mac into Target Disk & attach FW cable
to the newer Mac) and then look into there for files & folders.
The older Mac would appear as a hard disk drive, in FW TDM.
    • How to Use and Troubleshoot - FireWire Target Disk Mode:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
There also is a way to connect two Macs via one keyboard
and use one display; and share them. That would require a
KVM hardware to accomplish. And then, there is software
(included in some versions of OS X) to easily connect Macs.
So, depending on the level of involvement, complexity or cost
there are a few possible ways to access or move information.
One of them would be to use a Migration assistant as part of
setup of a second Mac, to bring in the user other user content.
Since I haven't had to do most of these, you probably have at
least a few options or ideas; including use a flash drive USB
to copy smaller files. Larger ones would be faster with FW.
Anyway, hopefully that works out OK.
    Good luck & happy computing!
PS: the earlier reply has a direct info path to file transfer using
the FW TDM setup; same in older OS X as in the 10.6 link given.
