One month old macpro, lost all purchased itunes files..

1 month old mac with 'grey screen', so everything had to be wiped. i didnt have a back up (i did plan on getting an external hard drive i didnt realise it would crash so quickly), so ive lost everything from itunes..
i found my music under previous itunes library's, but what about my purchased tv shows? any chance i can get them back?
any help would be grand, thanks in advance
dave

I had the similar situation before. There are two ways.
1. Just email the customer service people about your situation, and they will tell you how to recover your iTunes data.
2. This is what they told me. Check your menu in iTunes, where it shows an option something like "Download/retrieve purchased items".
Hope this helps.

  • My computer was in a fire and lost all my itune files...

    Hello,
Recently my house was on fire and I lost my computer with all my itune files. I bought so many "the office" episodes but now they are all gone.
I was wondering if there was a way to recover all this since apple itunes keeps some sort of purchase history. Would it be possible to download them again?
    Thanks

thinking that once you have purchase content you could re-download stuff you own the right to use whenever you want, and that Apple and/or the Record Companies would not exploit the loss of a client to get them to re-purchase music they already have proof of ownership of.
Your thinking is incorrect. The iTunes Store only allows a single download. Why this is no one here can say, but it's been the policy since day 1 of the Store.
I have never backed up my media (since I owned all the DVDs and CDs) and now I don't do it either since I have way too much of it.
I personally think you're foolish not to back up downloaded content that you've paid for. There's no way you purchase too much to make a backup, at least once every couple of weeks, which would minimize the amount of potential loss.
I do not want to (and sometimes cannot always) do a backup every time I purchase a single song.
Your call. But if you don't, then you risk losing valuable items should your system crash or be stolen, and will have no right to complain should that happen. The policy's clear, and you cannot claim ignorance of it in the future.
    Regards.

  • Help! PowerBook G4 failed, rebooted but I have lost all my iTunes files!

    Hi there,
    Please help!
I have an old PowerBook G4. I dropped it this morning by accident and it stopped working. I got it to switch on again and got to the Darwin/BSD page. I followed the advice below:
Start up in Single User Mode and type carefully:
    /sbin/fsck -y
Repeat the above until it says your disk is OK. Then:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    cd /var/db/netinfo
    mv local.nidb/ local.nidb.bad
    ls -ln /Users
This last command will give you one line for each user, plus one for the "Shared" directory, which doesn't interest us. Each user will have a line like one of these:
    drwxr-xr-x 29 501 501 986 Jan 17 18:38 michaelc
drwxr-xr-x 14 520 20 476 Sep 10 2004 jdoeThe second numeric field (501, 520) is the user ID (UID) and you need to list the uids against the shortname s given in the final column. Make sure you get the name right for UID 501! Then continue with
    reboot
I had to add new details once it had rebooted and it looks like i's created a new profile. I have the files that were on the HD (photos - phew) but all my music files have gone.
Any idea how to get them back please?
Thanks sooo much for your help!

Download a copy of EasyFind (free) and use it to search. It would be really unusual for a folder to go missing so selectively while everything else survived on a drive. Dropping a drive doesn't shake files loose. You posted a lot of instructions somebody had provided but how much of that did you actually need to do?

It is possible you had some sort of directory damage and the files still exist on the drive but the computer has lost track of them. Try file recovery software.
    *File Recovery*
General reading on this topic - [http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/datarecovery.html]
Easiest method: If you dragged these to the trash did you empty the trash? If not simply double click on it to open it and drag the file out again.
Next easiest method: Copy the file off a backup drive.
File recovery software: Try using an application such as [Data Rescue 3|http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php] or [FileSalvage|http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1]. Both have free trial versions that let you see if the software will help before you decide to buy. You will also need a second hard drive equal to or larger in size than your first drive as a destination drive for recovered files.
It is critical that you do not use the computer or even turn it on until you have rescued your files. Files only have the directory reference to them removed when you empty the trash or otherwise delete them from a computer (unless you use secure erase, in which case they are gone forever or can only be potentially be recovered by very expensive means) and are still present on the computer. However, their space is marked as available to any other file creation done on the computer (even done by you booting the computer) and there is risk that your files will be overwritten by the computer.
There is also this free tool which supposedly runs on OSX and does recovery of popular media and Office files. http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download I have not run it and have no idea about its functionality. It is a command line program and so is not as user friendly as Mac users might wish. [http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/27683/testdisk]
[Baby Boomer's post on file recovery utilities|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10270140#10270140 ] - note, most of these free demos only tell you if they can recover a file and don't actually recover any files for free.
If you manage to rescue the files you should seriously consider getting a backup drive. A $100 drive will cost less than replacing a substantial iTunes library since Apple does not provide for a second download for free.

Had to buy a new PC as the hard disk of the old one broke and lost all purchases, but still have them on the iPhone. How can I sync them back to the new PC in iTunes without losing them?

    You should be able to:
Backup the device to the new installation
Transfer your purchases into a newly authorized library
Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post from forum regular Zevoneer
Restore the device from the backup
This process should switch the association of the device to the new library, preserving the data and settings in your apps.
May also be prudent to attempt a backup to iCloud directly from the device before you start... Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > iCloud Backup > On. It won't save any media but it would preserve the general account settings and documents in case anything goes wrong while you are trying to extract your other data.
When you get it all fixed, make a backup!

Now remove all your info and update the old AppleiD/iTunes account and use only that account.
You cannot transfer items between iTunes accounts.
You can redownload all the content.

You have a backup of your computer, or at the very least of your iTunes media, correct?
Simply copy your backup of your iTunes media into the iTunes library on your new computer.
Connecting and syncing your device to the new computer without first recovering your iTunes media is a really, really, really bad idea.  iDevices are designed to ONLY sync with one computer.  When you plug your device into a new computer, it will wipe all media on the device when it syncs.  The only media you may be able to salvage and transfer to the new computer would be anything bought directly on the device.
If you do not have a backup of your iTunes media, then you will want to either look at a way (using software from a third party company)  to either extract the media from you iDevice or your old computer (assuming the hard drive is not toast).

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod/iphone/ipad:  File>Transfer Purchases

I don't know if I'm on the same page as you.
But if you backed up the phone with those contacts pictures notes etc, you should get them back.
After restoring your phone, use the back up that done when you had those contacts messages etc??

  • Lost All Purchased Items From My Itunes

I have lost all of my purchased items from my itunes account is there anyway of retrieving them as my computer died and went to laptop heaven and lost all purchased items?

You could try to go to the Appstore on your iPhone, go to 'Updates', select 'Purchased'. IOS 5.0x is required.
This should show all your purchases and allows you to download them. Swipe on a program to delete it from the list if you don't want it listed anymore.
(assuming you're looking for apps, off course).

  • I had a brand new Mac book pro one month old and the hard drive died. Right before it died I was down loading pictures off a memory card and now they aren't on my memory card! They are wedding pictures I took for a friend and irreplaceable! Please help!!

I had a one month old Mac book pro and the hard drive fried! I was down loading a friends wedding pictures when it stopped working and started heating up. I plugged it in and turned it off as it was making a clicking noise. When I turned it back on the was a grey box with a question mark and nothing else. When I took my memory card out the pictures were gone. I took it back to best buy where I bought it and they said it was dead, needed a new hard drive and all my info is lost! Is there any way to get back those irreplaceable wedding pictures?

There are some data recovery programs (software). I would look into that for the images on the card. When files are deleted, the files are still there, just the headers are removed. That being said, a format of the card or new files written to the card can overwrite deleted files.
The physical hard drive could be thousands of dollars to forensically save, with no guarantee.

  • HT203167 My computer crashed and i lost all my Itunes media ?!

Recently my computer crashed and I lost all my Itunes Media...I have absolutely no idea what I should do ?!
Could somebody tell me what to do ?

If you have a backup to an external hard disk, then install iTunes and place the backup of C:\users\????\Music\iTunes back into that folder. If you need to redownload old purchases, then go into iTunes and go store -> purchased -> download previous purchases and that will at least get you what you bought from Apple. If you could elaborate on what kind of crash, I might be able to recommend a few other things, but that would be less Apple support and more data recovery.

Music Rescue also works as far as restoring your playlists etc. I've used it twice, you can use the Quick Recover mode, but have to click continue trial (something like that) allot, cp. to purchase option. Otherwise diesel is right as far as restoring via  your purchase history.
Here is a review of Music Rescue.
