One more black screen

Hey everyone,
I have seen ,multiple threads reporting this or a similar issue, just want to make sure I got that right:
I upgraded to Snow Leopard on Friday night. I often do not shut down my computer at night but merely close the lid. Saturday, I first experienced that my screen would not come back on upon opening the lid. I tried several keystrokes and ended up hard shutting down by holding the power button for several seconds. I turned the computer back on, there was the startup chime, but the screen remained black. I turned it back of, removed the battery, waited a couple of minutes for everything to cool down some, put the battery back in, turned it on. Grey startup display, SL boots without any problem. I forgot the issue.
One day later, same problem. Only that this time, I rebooted the computer probably a hundred times, had it cool down over night, had the battery load all the way up, all the way down, with and without AC. Tried to reset PRAM, VRAM, and tried to reset the SMC (even though the instructions were for early 2008 MBPs, but mine is late 2007). Unfortunately, I do not have a second Mac to try the "sleepfile deleting" (suggested here: http://ariejan.net/2009/04/05/macbook-pro-black-screen-of-death-or-is-it-just-fa king/) or an external Monitor to check whether that would work. I can safely say that the system boots as it should, because I can open a terminal blind folded and issue the say command which works just fine. I also have a windows xp installed, which leaves the screen black, the same goes for any attempts to boot from disk, booth snow leopard and ubuntu linux. I a, furthermore quite certain that it is not a problem with the backlight, as even with a flash light pointed at the screen, I can not see the faintest thing. It is totally black.
From what I have read so far, my symptoms indicate it is the problem with the nVidia 8600M GT, which surprises me a little bit, as I never have been experiencing any problem with it up to this point. I strikes me odd that this all happens just after I installed Snow Leopard. But then again, it does not seem to have anything todo with software. I already made an appointment with a Genius Bar, unfortunately not before Wednesday, and sure hope this will resolve the issue. The warranty is over, however, as I've read the nVidea failure should still be covered since the MBP is not older than 3 years. I hope they won't have me waiting for the repair too long, as my everyday work strongly depends on this device to work. Any suggestions what I could maybe try are most welcome.

I had that problem constantly since I upgraded from Tiger to Leopard. All the problems you describe, as well as your attempted solutions including letting the MBP cool down etc. I upgraded to Snow leopard on release day and the startup issue is gone. (so far!) Maybe you should try reinstalling snow leopard?

  • MBP won't boot, one beep, black screen

    Specs: 13" MBP (early-2011) i5
After a power off of the computer, on restart I encounter this:
One beep every 5 seconds. Nothing showing on the screen. The fan spins (I took off the back cover to remove the HD so I can get off the files); however, the computer doesn't seem to boot at all.  The battery does work as the power connector glows when plugged in and the battery indicator on the side of the computer shows it's level.
I thought it may have been bad RAM, so I replaced the RAM. Tested each stick in each bay. Nothing changed.
I've scoured the boards for any solutions; however, I can't reset the PRAM or anything else as all that happens is the same back screen, one beep every 5 seconds and the fan spins.

    Early 2011 ?
Contact Apple before warranty runs out. It is important.

  • Windows Vista and Windows 7 Only Boots to a black screen with a mouse cursor

Windows Vista and Windows 7 Only Boots to  a black screen with a mouse cursor after I installed Mcafee Internet Security.
Hi I installed 1of 3 McAfee Internet Security protections on my HP laptop a few weeks ago with no issues. I Have a Dell XPS 420 desk top with Windows Vista operating
system, it’s never had any issues, until 2 nights ago I installed McAfee Internet Security (detected incompatible files and will remove) pc now only boots up to a black screen with a mouse cursor, it will show the windows logo and a hash symbol floating around
the screen. Now 2 weeks ago I installed the same program on my Dell all in one desk top with Windows 7, the same issue happen but that pc has no screen activity, I tried a back to factory reboot on this one, still black screen.

    Hi,
Please install the compatible version of McAfee Internet Security:
    http://home.mcafee.com/store/internet-security
if you have startup issue, you can boot into Safe Mode to uninstall the problematic software to go back into Windows.

  • [SOLVED] linux-3.13.6-1 and systemd-210-3 causes black screen

My computer boots into total black screen after recent update, including linux-3.13.6-1, xf86-video-intel-2.99.910-1 and systemd-210-3.  I have tried all combinations of rollback, I find  linux-3.12.7-2  + systemd-208-2 resolves my problem.
As I dig on, I find it a problem with systemd-backlight. With running kernel-3.13 and systemd-{210,211},  disabling systemd-backlight service either through kernel parameter systemd.restore_state=0 or by masking systemd-backlight service can fix my problem.
Still, I am not the only one experiencing black screen and unresponsive X input with 3.13 kernel: several radeon user seem to have similar phenomenon but cannot be fixed by disabling backlight restore.  I would suspect restoring backlight is just one of many ways to trigger this issue, I not experienced in kernel, but I will try to debug the problem. Help will be appreciated.
There seems nothing wrong with X, but a problem with power management.

Hello! I seem to be having a similar problem to what is being discussed here. So I figured I would add what is going on with me.
I will try to keep it short but I apologize in advance for it being a bit long.
Hardware: 2006 Imac with Radeon mobility x1600
For me there was no problem before the systemd upgrade to 210 and the upgrade to 211 did not fix the problem of black screen on boot.
Also I upgraded my kernel from 3.13.5-1 to 3.13.6-1 after the problem with systemd started.
Downgrading systemd to 208.10 ( the kernel had been upgraded already) got the system working properly again.
I have since gone back to 211 and have found that:
If I wait for 5 - 10 minutes after the computer boots when I move the mouse the screen wakes up and I can unlock the screen and the computer works as normal.
Note: I am using gdm and gnome3. I think from this that my problem is a brightness/screen not being turned on issue?
If I add nomodeset to the kernel boot parameters the computer works but the Radeon drivers are not loaded.
and after booting with nomodeset if I use "sudo modprobe radeon modeset=1" my computer screen blacks and I have no response.
With both 210 and 211 I can press ctrl+alt+F2 type my username and password into the blind and give commands like "sudo reboot followed by the password" blindly to the computer and the computer will execute them.
I hope that this can be fixed soon... It is annoying at best.
    EDIT
I tried  "sudo modprobe radeon modeset=1" again and found that I can press ctrl+alt+F2 and get a terminal login prompt that I can use and see! Although gdm login/gnome is still a black screen...

  • Linux-lts leads to black screen on rebooting even for linux (solved)

I'd like to mention a problem I faced when trying linux-lts (kernel 3.14). I had the "linux" kernel installed (4.0). If someone has an idea on what happened, please share.
    sudo pacman -S linux-lts
    , then
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
, reboot, choose the lts-kernel. I can login to the desktop (lxde, lxqt and i3 are all working). Then reboot, pick any of linux or linux-lts kernels. And here the problem starts: black screen.
I tried to debug the booting process by following https://wiki.freedesktop.org/www/Softwa … Debugging/. I couldn't resolve anything.
By luck I thought "what if it's the login manager (lxdm) that's black?", and so I tried to aim at the middle of the screen with the mouse on the 100% black screen, I entered my password and "boom" I was on the lxqt desktop!
I rebooted, same problem. But by trying to guess where the password box was, I could login to my desktop. To fix the problem at first, I did remove linux-lts, reinstalled linux with pacman, removed lxdm and its systemd service, installed sddm and enabled its service, regenerated the grub.cfg file. Rebooting worked, no black screen.
At that point I thought "well it might just have been lxdm not working well with linux-lts so let's try to install it again, since now I have sddm". Huge mistake... After reinstalling linux-lts, booting in it, rebooting lead again to a black screen on boot up. This time however trying to aim at the box to enter my password was impossible: I was not used to sddm so I didn't know where to click. I tried the "tab" key around 20 times, entering my password each time, without success. So I ended up using the live Arch.iso version on a usb flash drive to remove the linux-lts, sddm (yeah I went for lxdm again), etc. by chrooting. This worked again: no more black screen.
The irony is that I installed that kernel thinking of increasing the stability of Arch on my laptop. It ended up breaking the booting process of both kernels!
And since I want to understand Linux in general, I am posting this in hopes that it could help someone else facing this problem and also in hopes that someone can explain me what could have happened. Because as of now I don't understand how lxdm and sddm could appear black in both kernels when rebooting from the linux-lts kernel.
    Thanks for any pointer.

OK just to confirm that enabling the testing repository solved the problem for me as well.
These were the updated packages (excluding dbus which I manually upgraded before enabling the repo):
    Targets (18): device-mapper-2.02.98-3  filesystem-2012.12-1  isl-0.11-1  libpulse-2.99.2-1  libquvi-0.4.1-2  libssh2-1.4.3-1  linux-3.6.9-1
                  linux-headers-3.6.9-1  lua-5.2.1-2  lua51-5.1.5-3  lvm2-2.02.98-3  mkinitcpio-0.12.0-1  nmap-6.25-2  pulseaudio-2.99.2-1  talloc-2.0.8-1
                  vlc-2.0.4-5  xorg-server-1.13.0.901-1  xorg-server-common-1.13.0.901-1
It might be any of those but most likely could be either the kernel or xorg-server* (just for future reference).
    Cheers, Elisiano

  • Black screen of death after warning "Disk 1 has the same disk identifiers as one or more disks connected to the system. "

    Hi,
I am having the same problem / event warning, only one second after the warning occurs, I face a black screen of death leaving me with no other option than to switch off and reboot. After reboot I can work for some time but as far as I can see there is a
spontaneous re-occurance of the same warning and subsequent black screen of death.
It is hugely frustrating and don't seem to be able to solve it. It occurred in W8/W8.1 and W10 TP. All hardware seems fine. There are no other events that occur near the time when the BSOD occurs so I suppose its that.
HD (SSD'S) seem to have unique identifiers so I don't understand it at all. It does not matter whether I am browsing the internet, rendering images or simply leaving my laptop untouched (M6500 DELL).
Please help. It occurs 3 - 5 times a day and it seems unworkable.
    Mike

    Hi MAVH2014,
Which version are you running? Do you installed all updates for current Technical Preview?
Can you find any related events in Event Viewer?
For your disk identifier issue, if you have checked them already, I suggest you use following command to change the value:
    Uniqueid

  • Intel hd graphics, black screen on tty switch and more

    Hi,
This is my first post on the arch forums, after having used this wonderful distro for half a year. I look forward to being a more active user in the future.
Last week, my laptop HD crashed and i had to re-install arch on a new one. With this came the 3.14 kernel, which I had been holding back at 13.12 previously.
At first I expected something was off with the KMS, but now I am not sure anymore. I can start the system just fine, problems arise when I try to start X, then the screen goes black. Same problem arises if i issue lspci (odd huh?). If I use vgaswitcheroo to switch to the discrete readon, and then back again I can start X and issue lspci just fine. When X is started, I cannot turn it off again (black screen), or change into a vc (same black screen).
I realize this is little to go on, but I would greatly appreciate pointers to what the problem could be and where to look for useful log/debugging information.

You should go into the "Display" settings in the Win 7 control panel and have a thorough look through all the settings available there!

  • Have 2004 eMac...screen goes black without notice. Getting a reconditioned 2005 eMac. Can I have the HD swapped from old eMac to reconditioned one without problems??? Black screen is called "collapse to black" and occurs 4-5 daily

Have 2004 eMac...screen goes black without notice.  Black screen is called "collapse to black" and occurs 4-5 daily. From what I understand, this is due to bad capicators????? Found a reconditioned 2005 eMac on line. Can I have the HD swapped from old eMac to reconditioned eMac without problems???...with regards to software applications. Old eMac is running 10.4.11 and reconditioned on runs 10.5. Suggestions, tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Might want to make sure both units are not affected. This is the range of serial number from the now-defunct Apple Repair Extention Program for USB 2.0 eMacs:
    G8412xxxxxx- G8520xxxxxx
    YM412xxxxxx - YM520xxxxxx
    VM440xxxxxx - VM516xxxxxx
A "collapse" is more indicative of a video cabling issue, but the bad caps produced such a wide range of problems that it's hard to sort through them.
If the old eMac is a USB 2.0, which a 2004 unit should be, the HD should exchange with the new one. As the last of the eMacs shipped with Tiger, the new computer should have no probelms with a 10.4 boot volume on the old drive. You can upgrade to Leopard one you have hte new disk in place.
NOTE: Takeapart and reassembly on the USB 2.0 must be done "just so" or you can permanently damage the power switch. Instructions for the USB 1.1 takeapart are slightly different , and the power swtich damage is usually caused by people using the older instructions on a newer eMac.
If you are not up to the takepart nor can you find a local computer tech who knows these. consider taking the drive out of the dead computer(won't make much difference if you damage that one as it's dead), buy an external Firewire enclosure, and put the old drive on it and use it to move data to the new computer. Then you can leave the external attached as a backup drive.
Is the new one a 1.42Ghz model? They have been practically trouble-free around here. We have one and it's been rock solid since we bought it as a refurb in Jan 2006. The 1.42G has the advantage of a Core Image-enabled video chipset, the ATI 9600.
And all USB 2.0 eMacs can, with modern memory modules, support up to 2G of RAM.

  • Apple tells me that i no longer have warranty yet my computer is only 2 years old. One year warranty and i have applecare (which adds 2 years). will they fix their problems of having BLACK SCREENS OF DEATH. 2010 models affected should have been recalled.

    WHY?
It literally makes no sense at all. Apple itself has always had my back. UNTIL NOW. when my problems arise. i am a full time student and when working on video editing projects or ANYTHING that uses a graphics card (youtube, diablo 3, quicktime player, EVEN IPHOTO) causes my computer to BLACK SCREEN.
THIS IS AN ISSUE APPLE NEEDS TO RESOLVE, especially when they tell me i am not under warranty and have NO APPLE PRODUCTS REGISTERED? it is like they deleted it because last time i checked i had 3 ipods, an iphone4 and my macbook pro all registered. and when the store checked my account i have 0 apple products apparently.
I REGISTERED MY IPHONE IN THE STORE STANDING NEXT TO THE GUY WHEN I BOUGHT IT.
anyways. yes apple. nice going with a significant issue of screens cutting out for no F3948ing reason. 2010 models especially i have been reading about (which mine is) as well as laptops made before that.
    no recall?
    an update that doesn't work?
denying my applecare's existence? (even when i brought the disk and all my applecare info?)
buying a new laptop today NOT A MAC... because a WORKING computer is a necessity.
I will still try to fix this mac as i have over 2,000$ invested in it. including parallels.
IF ANYONE CAN ADRESS THIS ISSUE or figure out how it would be resolved, please let me know.
    Thanks.

i figure it is the logic board. and no it has never been changed. yes i have the box, the code. i keep everything for situations just like these and somehow they still try to **** me over.
    Do this.
Go to the Apple Support page and type in your serial number. When the screen comes up showing that Serial number having Applecare extended warranty take a screen shot of it or Print it out to a PDF file and then Print a Hard Copy of either of those things. Take that with you when you take your Mac in to be looked at.
Good Luck with the Lenovo. I hear they are the same quality as when IBM was making them. Personally I have always used Dell Business Class notebooks and have never had any problems with them. Still have one that is going on 11 years old and it still runs as good as the day I bought it, actually a little better because I've upgrade the CPU, GPU. RAM and HDD.

Can you start Firefox in [[Safe mode]] ?
You can also do a clean reinstall and download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
You can initially skip the step to create a new profile, that may not necessary for this issue.

I cannot get the Adobe TV videos to play--even the ones in my library--all I get is a black screen--I have been ay from Adobe TV for several months--what has changed and how can I view the videos?

In Safari, open your Preferences, go to Advanced and check the "Show Develop menu in the menu bar"
This will add a new menu at the top.
Go to the Develop menu, User Agent and select a different choice which allows Safari to spoof different browsers, OSs and devices.
Selecting Safari for iPad usually works.
However, the choice is page specific. it doesn't stick if you go to another page, you need to repeat the procedure again.

  • Working with more than one ALV on Screen

    Hi,
I have got two alv's in same application/report. One ALV is for displaying the data and another ALV is for interaction or with EVENT Handling, but when iam defining the class with methods for event handling for CL_GUI_ALV_GRID, it is showing me an error message as there are more than one ALV with reference to CL_GUI_ALV_GRID. It seems it wants only UNICODE Object for CL_GUI_ALV_GRID.
Please assit, how to manage with event handling when there are more than one ALVs on screen. How to go for class definition and implementation

If you are dealing with two ALV, you should have created two different objects referring to CL_GUI_ALV_GRID.
If you have done and still getting a error, please post the code that is erroring here.
    Regards,

  • Firefox shows a black screen suddenly while browsing or when left idle for long time (more than 1 hr).

Firefox suddenly turns totally black while I was browsing yesterday. I tried restarted it, and it works fine. In such state none of the menu or actions items are accessible. Even while closing the browser I get the confirmation popup which is also completely black.
    Screenshot link: http://prntscr.com/55kggq
I had to randomly click on the "close tabs" button.
I am using Mozilla Firefox v33.1 in Windows 7, 32 Bit OS with i3 processor, 4GB RAM.

I've just had the same issue (sudden black screen while browsing), probably related to my graphics card driver which I've updated two days ago.
    Laptop model: ASUS N550JV CN270H
Graphics card model: Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600
    Old driver: 10.18.10.3308 (2013-09-16)
    New driver: 10.18.10.3960 (2014-09-29)
If the problems recurs, I will re-install the 10.18.10.3308 driver and post the results here.

After 3 more blackouts, I restored 10.18.10.3308 and the problem went away.
