One more flash drive/additional hard drive question

Ok, this is embarassing but I need to ask as I've never worried about maxing out my hard drive before ... if I buy a secondary drive to go with the new retina display to put, say my photos on, will I be able to use them "live" as if they're on the computer itself?  I don't mean nanoseconds the same, just perceptually the same.  I'm still nervous about buying the 256G flash drive version when I have 43G of pictures on my computer now ... I love to run my pictures as an alternating desktop background.

I have a LaCie Carte Orange 8GB flash drive that mounts as a USB Hard Drive (orange icon with USB logo). I can select it as volume to perform backups on. However, I can't test it because it is already full of photos.
I also have a SanDisk Cruzer 4GB memory stick that mounts as a USB drive (plain white icon), but it is not available to use as a backup volume.
I think its safe to say that if the icon is orange with the USB or FireWire logo, it can be used in Time Machine as a rule of thumb.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

  • Today's dumb USB flash drive question

    Hello All,
I have an SD DV clip in Final Cut. Can I download this clip as uncompressed video to a USB flash drive and then give this USB flash drive to customers to look at on their Mac or PC to watch? Will this work? Will the picture and sound look as good as it does in FCP.
    Thanks for your help.
    Mike

Uncompressed? If the clip was DV it is compressed already (DV compression).
If you truly gave him an uncompressed file, then it is HIGHLY unlikely he will be able to play it from the USB port. Uncompressed is about 30MB/sec of data. Heck he might not be able to play if from his hard drive. This is ignoring codec issues - he might not even have a player that supports the codec.
Maybe you gave him a DV encoded file, and that is what you mean by "uncompressed". If so, he probably will be able to play the file.
If he plans to use this clip to edit, then what you did is perfect.
However, DV is an interlaced, non-square pixel format. Hardly ideal for viewing on a home PC.
If you are just trying to give him a clip that he can look at, or maybe even email around, I would highly recommend exporting an .mp4 encoded file. Even though it is highly compressed it often looks better, due to the lack of interlacing and non-square pixels.

  • Can I use more than one flash-drive for ready-boost on Satellite L650/0ed

    Hi,
I have a toshiba Satellite L650/0ed, is it alright if i use more than one 8gb flash-drive for 'ready boost' - what is the maximum number of flash-drives use can dedicate to 'ready-boost'.
In addition, if i use a 16gb flash-drive, will this dedicate more memory to 'ready-boost'.
Why is the seagate 1tb 3.5 expansion drive not compatible for ready-boost.
    Thank you,
    -Brent907

    Hi mate
Please check this Microsoft page which describes the ReadyBosst
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/features/readyboost
There you can find this statement:
+ReadyBoost works with most flash storage devices. In Windows 7, it can handle more flash memory and even multiple devices *up to eight* , for a maximum 256 gigabytes (GB) of additional memory.+
    Hopefully this can be helpful!

  • I have an old iPod, first generation. I want to play a friend's music thru my Bose radio. I've emptied my iPod to my itunes library to allow space on the iPod. Question is: Can my friend put his music on a flash drive and somehow transfer to my computer.

I have an old iPod. First generation. I want to play a friend's music thru my Bose radio at an upcoming party.   (already use my Pod w/the radio). Ive emptied my iPod to my itunes library to make more room for additional music.
Question: Can I somehow download my friend's playlist - which is on a flashdrive, transfer it to my itunes and then transfer to the iPod??

If the Apple Store Genuis says you can't sync music from an audio CD to your iPod (because it's too old), he or she is not much of a "genius."
That question is not even related to your iPod.  First step is to "rip" the music CD into your iTunes library.  Once the songs on the CD are in your iTunes library, they are like any other songs in your library, and you can sync them to your iPod as desired.  This article seems to do a good job of describing how to rip CDs
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1156861/howto_rip_cds.html
NOTE:  When you insert a music CD, it appears in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES.  If you do not see the sidebar (along left side of window), from the iTunes menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.
It was the context of your original question, not the actual task.  You can easily add songs files that are on a flash drive to your iTunes library.  Open a window that shows the flash drive contents.  Drag the song files from that window to the iTunes window, and drop them on your iTunes Music library.  Or, use the command
iTunes menu bar -> File -> Add to Library...
NOTE:  Open your iTunes preferences, Advanced tab.  If the checkbox for Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library is NOT checked, those songs from the flash drive will only be accessible (for playing and syncing) when the flash drive is connected.

  • How do I export photos used in a project (calendar) to a flash drive?

    iPhoto 9.4.2
calendar has been purchased but I would also like to give the photos (including the unused ones) on flash drive for use on digital frame
approx 350 photos total, but I can't figure out how to select/export even small batches
    I have tried "Select All"

I've tried this and it oly puts 150 of my 377 photos in the new album.  It appears to be including my "Placed Photos" only.
The calendar seems to have a memory. Sometimes I am getting all photos in the album, sometimes only the placed photos.
    You could try the following:
Select the calendar in the source list and duplicate it with ⌘D
Then select the duplicate calendar, click the Photos tab of the calendar, set it to "Show all photos in Project", and click "Clear all placed photos".
    Quit iPhoto
    Launch iPhoto again
Select the copy of the Calendar and use the command "File > New Album" again.
If a no photos are placed, the album always has all photos in the project, at least, when I try.

  • My mac thinks my flash drive is a camera

Whenever I insert one certain flash drive, it causes iPhoto to open and looks for photos. Obviously not life threatening but can something be reset to stop this?

I don't know how to make the Mac not think it's a camera. However, if you want to stop iPhoto from opening automatically, open iPhoto, go to its Preferences, and show the General tab. There, change +Connecting camera opens+ - iPhoto -TO- *No application*.

  • Backing up the library to a USB Flash Drive

    Hello,
I have about 3.5 GB of data in my library and I don't want to back it up into 4 separate 750 MB CD'Rs. I want to have it all under one USB Flash Drive. I had a lot of trouble doing this on my own and I am afraid I might accidentally delete or corrupt my files. Does anyone know how to or have backed up files before to a USB Cruiser Flash drive? This is of major significance to me. Thanks.

Assuming you have a Flash Drive large enough and Most Importantly: it’s formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Then simply copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the Flash Drive. Drag it to the

I wouldn't think so because the newer ones with Retina displays don't have an internal SuperDrive that can be replaced. Therefore the newer logic boards wouldn't have the two SATA/SATA Express connections on the logic board.
At least that was the case as of 2012. I've seen newer ones and they also don't have a SuperDrive.

Hold down the Option key while you boot your Mac. Then, it should show you a selection of devices. Click your flash drive and it will boot from that.

  • My turn to post a question, USB Flash drive hard lock issues

So not sure if anyone here will be able to help me. Maybe someone from GS has run into this issue, or someone with tech experience can help. The following is from my post on another forum:
This issue has really been bugging me. For the last year I've been having an issue with every version of Windows (XP, Vista, Windows 7). When I insert a flash drive the system will work just fine. When I move a single large file to a flash drive it'll work fine, when I move small files or read small files from a flash drive my entire system hard locks.
Everything freezes, I hit reset, it asks if I want safe mode, then back to the desktop. There are no errors in the error logs. Reliability monitor doesn't show any related issues.
Being of a technological nature I booted into Ubuntu. Everything works perfectly. Put the drive on my hackbook, and everything worked perfectly. OS X, worked perfectly. Tried it on my girlfriend's Vista laptop, worked perfectly.
This issue happens with anything that is detected as a portable storage. It happens with my memory card reader, my flash drives (sandisk, pny, kingston and sony) as well as with my sandisk sansa and iriver mp3 players, but when I set those up as MTP devices they work perfectly.
I have enabled and disabled legacy USB support, re-installed with slipstreamed SP1, xp sp3, vista ultimate without sp1, and the most recent beta of windows 7. Every time I figured it was related to some other USB device, but it's not. Last night I reloaded Vista (without a service pack) and before I installed anything I put a flash drive in and tried transferring some files to it. Hard lock, no other USB devices plugged in, let alone installed.
    Specs:
    AMD Athlon 6400+
    MSI K9A Platinum
    2GB Corsair XMS2
    9600 GSO 512MB
This is a major inconvience. Putting files on a flash drive should be the easiest thing in the world, not something that should force me into a different OS. Please help!

    You're welcome.
According to MSI's website, there are multiple ways to flash the BIOS.  Here are the links to their documents on the alternatives.
How to flash the BIOS CD
How to flash the BIOS Flash Drive
How to upgrade BIOS using MSI LiveUpdate Utility
This page shows all of the BIOS updates available for download for the K9A Platinum.  Probably best to go with the latest release.
I don't have any MSI products but it looks like LiveUpdate might be the easiest since it works from inside the operating system.  If that will not work for you then I would use CD.  They're easy to make bootable following the guide above.
    Hope this helps you.

  • Adding additional hard disk drives

Hey, I want to add additional hard drives to my mac and have got a couple of questions?
How many SATA ports are on the G5 Quad motherboard?
If I need to get a RAID card or similar which ones are recommended?
    Thanks.

There is support for two internal SATA drives. If you only have one now then you can add one more and Apple makes the upgrade process painless.
If you want to add more drives than that you need to buy a third party bracket and a PCI-Express SATA card.

  • I want to use my second external hard drive as a "flash drive"

Forgive my ignorance, but I would appreciate any input before I purchase and set up a second external hard drive....
I have a MyBook that I use with Time Machine and it has been great. However, it's approaching more full than I want it to get and I need to dump all my pictures and music that I would like to keep forever onto a second external hard drive that I can access easily, take with me to friends houses to share music/photos, etc.
My question is: do I want to set up Time Machine on the second "flash drive" external hard drive, or should I only use Time Machine on MyBook and use the manufacturer software on the second drive?
I envision connecting both very frequently -- as I load new pictures, loading them quickly onto the second drive, but then back up on MyBook and Time Machine as I do know, every few days or so.
How do other people navigate this?

Well, you can certainly keep using one for Time Machine and use the other one to back up just your photos, files, videos, etc.
If that is what you want to do, you don't need any included software at all. In fact, Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities) does a great job. Once you get the hard drive, plug it in (firewire is preferred - faster than USB), open Disk Utility. highlight the external hard drive and click on Partition tab. From there you can choose to keep it as is (one partition), or make more than one. Choose the format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and, under options, GUID partition table. Click Apply and let it do its thing.
Once finished, your external is ready. You can simply drag and drop whatever files from your internal onto the external. You can also delete them from the external at a later time, copy new ones, etc, etc.

  • Difference in "regular" hard drive vs. "flash" drive?

Ok I am looking at getting a MacBook Pro or Air, other than phsyical deifferences, I see the biggest difference is the hard drive types.
Is there an advantage to either one? I see you get a lost less storage with the Air vs. Pro.
Any other things I need to consider?
We use it maily for internet. I have a external hard drive that I use to store pics on.
I DO want a DVD/CD drive though as well as at least 3-4 USB ports.

I don't know why you feel you need a disc drive (dvd/cd), however to address your questions...
A traditional HDD (Hard Disc Drive) has moving parts and the speed of the disc is severely limited by this fact.  A SSD (Solid State Drive) does not have moving parts and is considerably quicker.  You will notice that your computer will feel faster and more responsive even with a slower processor.
The reason that there is such a steep price difference in cost/GB is because flash storage (solid state) is still comparatively new to being used as these storage sizes.  You can get an 8 GB USB flash drive pretty cheap these days but to get a 1TB SSD you'll spend approximatey $1,000.  For the same 1TB HDD you can spend less than $100.
