One of the speakers on my Pixi+ is busted

Not sure if it ever worked or if I am just noticing it now. the phone doesn't sound any different than it did when i bought it but one day i happened put my finger over one of them and i could tell there was no sound coming out of the other one..
so anyway, before i go do battle with the jerkwads at the VZ store, I am wondering whether this might be a software/update issue.

Feel free to pull the back off if you don't believe me.
I don't design hardware (anyone you see here from Palm are customer support folks) so this is a guess but whoever does design the hardware might have thought it looked more aesthetically pleasing.    Just my guess, though.
