One POP account cannot retrieve mail

We have one mac out of three that cannot retrieve mail from an earthlink pop account Two macs (20" imac intel core 2 duo running 10.4.8 and 12" ibook G4 running 10.3.9) can retrieve mail for the account in question from the earthlink server without difficulty. Mail can also be retrieved via WebMail. the 17" imac intel core duo running 10.4.8 cannot retrieve mail. Mail asks for the password over and over. The settings are the same on all three Macs. Connection doctor can connect to the smtp server using the same setup without difficulty but cannot connect to the POP server. We've tried deleting and re-entering the account. We've tried the Key chain repair tool. We tried deleting the pop password from key chain. I've dragged stuff out of the preferences folder and on and on. Nothing has worked. I even tried re-installing the 10.4.8 update. I tried re-installing Mail from the startup disk and then running the update. Nothing. We're not using a firewall. We use an Airport network but, again, all the settings are the same for all three computers.
Any suggestions.

Go to System Preferences > Network > Show: Network Port Configurations, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.
Also, try using a different method to connect to Internet, if possible, or connecting the computer to Internet as directly as possible, i.e. bypassing any routers that might be present, using an ethernet cable instead of wireless, etc., and see whether that makes a difference.
The Mac OS X 10.4.7 Update introduced connection issues as a result of (according to the documentation) “Mail now supports connecting to mail servers through a SOCKS proxy”. If that’s the problem, you must go to System Preferences > Network and disable the SOCKS Proxy in the network configuration used to connect to the Internet, if it’s enabled -- I don’t think you would be able to send if that was the problem, though.

  • POP account creation in Mail 4.5

I am trying to set up a pop account for retrieving e-mails with Mail 4.5, and Mail forces me to create a IMAP account while I need POP. How can one unselect or deactivate the "smart" account configuration, or manually create an account?

    Folks,
I found out the solution to my own problem: when prompted for account creation, one has to type a WRONG password, which then makes a next screen appear with a pop-up menu from which one can choose IMAP, POP and a couple other options.

  • More than one POP account?

Is it possible to configure more than one POP account using Mail? If so how?

Absolutely. I have several. Just go to Preferences, select Accounts. Hit the "+" sign at the bottom left. When the guide takes you through creating the account just choose "POP" and put in your account information. One thing to note: while the incoming server is that which relates to the new account, the outgoing server (SMTP) is that of your main account. The outgoing server has to be the one that your home system talks to when it sends mail. Eg. My broadband account uses the company Primus. So my Primus incoming server is pop.iprimus.com.au and my outgoing is smtp.iprimus.com.au. For my second POP account, which is a university account, I use the university incoming server, but I use the smtp.iprimus.com.au server as the outgoing. If you use any other server you will not be able to send your mail. Good luck!

  • One POP account no longer collecting new mail

I'm having a very strange problem with Mail 3.6 on my MacBook2,1 running OS 10.5.8.  I currently have three POP account set up to be automatically checked every 15 minutes.  I have not changed settings for any of them in over a year.  Yesterday around noon one of them stopped receiving new mail (the other two continue to work just fine).  My iPhone, on which I have not changed any settings either, contines to collect mail from all three accounts (and does not remove mail from the server).  I can log into the web interface for the account (it is an old university account), and mail that I have received since noon yesterday is there, all the same stuff as I've been receiving on my phone, but which does not appear in Mail.  The weirdest thing about this this is that there is no error: Mail reports that it is successfully connecting to and logging into the server--Connection Doctor gives the account a green light.  Yet I know that there is uncollected mail on the server.  Any suggestions about what could be going wrong will be most appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    PJW

Hi Neville, thanks for the suggestion.  I had not tried anything like this.  Unfortunately, it didn't solve the problem: I just got duplicate copies of all the emails on the problematic server up to the point at which they stopped downloading yesterday.
I should add that I have, of course, rebooted everything multiple times.  I also ran the "Rebuild" command from the Mailbox menu--just out of desparation, not totally clear about what it does.  All to no avail.
Can anyone think of anything else to try before contacting the tech people responsible for the server (who I expect will not be excited about helping an alumnus in another country, running an older Mac, experiencing a very weird problem).

  • Mail.app: Signatures Won't Save in one POP Account

    Hi,
Looked high and low for a solution to this. Searched Apple discussions and macosxhints and googled the problem but so far no joy. This is not a major problem but it is quite annoying.
There are multiple email accounts set up in Mail.app (Version 3.6 (936)) on my MacBook Pro, running Mac OS 10.5.8. All except one account will save all my signatures. In all I have ten signatures, all of which disappear between launches of mail from a POP gmail account. I add them back at each launch and the next time I open Mail they're gonzo. So, I add them back again. I tried moving the placement of the account in the side-bar, still no-go. I have set Mail.app prefs not to apply the sigs automatically. I choose when and if I use a signature.
To add them I do as I have done to the other email accounts: select all of them and drag and drop them onto the email account in the Signature pane of Mail.app's preferances.
More info: all the sigs are all rtf formatted, most of the accounts are POP, though three are IMAP. No other account is affected except this one gmail account (I have other gmail POP accounts and other non-gmail POP accounts. This is the second to oldest POP account. The problem has only occurred since a recent Apple security update. Though I can't say that is the problem or just a coincident.
If all else fails, just as a work-around, is there an "applescriptable" way to add sigs to mail?
    Thanks

    I'm afraid I don't have a solution, but I do have a similar problem...
Since upgrading to Mountain Lion none of my signatures will stay where I put them, or they disappear. Previous to the upgrade everything was working perfectly.
I'll assign a signature to a particular e-mail address and usually within a day, when I go back to send an e-mail from that address there is no signature available to be selected in the e-mail composing window. When I check in Mail Prefs I see that the signature has disappeared completely from the e-mail address to which it was assigned and is now listed under "All Signatures", but these are not available to any of the e-mail addresses when composing e-mails.
An identical problem occurs on another iMac I use in my office, which is also synced with iCloud.
I've tried a number of times to delete all the signatures and start again, both on one computer and on both, but nothing seems to work.
    Does anyone have any ideas?...

  • Can I receive mail from more than one POP account in Mobile Me?

I have added a POP account on Mobile Me, but I'd like to add more. Is that possible?
    Message was edited by: Faasse

No. Only one POP3 account can be added at a time.
You could forward your second POP3 account to the 1st one that MobileMe picks up, if your email provider allows forwarding (most do).
By the way, the MobileMe forums are here: http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=116

  • Problem with one POP account

I'm having major problems with a single POP account, using Mail 3.3. It was there with 10.5.2 and persists with upgrade to 10.5.3. I have 5 accounts (3 POP, 2 IMAP) and all work fine except one and that one no longer can receive mail-haven't seen any new mail in about a week. When I attempt to import mail the activity indicator just spins but nothing shows up. Have also tried to thin it out but mail I thought was deleted shows up again. Any ideas-this is pretty frustrating!

I recently have been trying to find out why my email won't go online. A window pops up stating The identity of "pop.qwestoffice.net" cannot be verified. The certificate for this server is invalid. You may be connecting to a server that is pretending to be "pop.qwestoffice.net" putting information at risk. It asks to connect anyway? Anyone out there have a clue? I am losing my contacts with my clients.

  • Can't add Gmail (POP) accounts to Apple Mail

I noticed a day before the 10.5.7 update that my existing gmail accounts in Mail suddenly stopped retrieving mail, giving "a server not responding" message. So I delete the accounts and try to add again. And again, pop server not responding. This was all on 10.5.6 mind you, and yes all my settings are correct under google settings.
10.5.7 was released and I seen in the notes that there was a problem with gmail and Apple Mail in the past (no problems for me but I only used POP). So, like always, I repair disk permissions, download the full combo update and install. After install, like always, I repair disk permissions again before doing anything else.
Same thing. Can't add my POP gmail accounts to Apple Mail. POP server not responding

I have just experienced the same issue with a gmail account I setup in Mail when I bought my first Macbook 2 years ago. I've never had any problems with the gmail POP server before, until last night July 26th 09. Then suddenly a couple of minutes after successfully retrieving the emails as usual, it tried again and failed, asking for the password. I entered the password, but still came back saying POP server not responding.
I did some updates yesterday, but nothing more than the one for the pro apps. I'm completely up to date with all Leopard updates. Also I've double checked that all is working with my gmail account and settings; no change in settings or password were made.
Do I need to delete the account in Mail and recreate it from scratch, then, is that the only answer when this error seems to occur out of the blue?

  • Hostgator POP account configuration in Mail (Mountain Lion)

    Hi,
I have a little problem with configuring a Hostgator POP account in Mail (Mountain Lion).
The following info is from Hostgator:
    Secure SSL/TLS Settings:
    Username: [email protected]
    Password: mypassword
    Incoming Server: gator4113.hostgator.com
    - POP3 Port: 995
    Outgoing Server: gator4113.hostgator.com
    - SMTP Port: 465
Authentication is required for POP3 and SMTP.
I have manually configured the account in Mail, but where shall I enter the
    Incoming Server's Port 995?
At the end of the Advanced Tab I could enter a port (is by default set to 110)
but according to the help file this is ALSO for SENDING messages. (???)
    Thanks for any help!

I tried this, but still no screen appears where I could enter the incoming port.
I found another forum post regarding this question:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6507302 => Csound1 wrote:
"the path you provided (mail>preferences>advanced) allows you to change the incoming port"
I tried it, and it seems to work!
As I wrote in the Mail help they wrote "Specify the port numbers to use to send messages",
BUT at the top, under "Advanced accounts preferences" it says
"Use Advanced accounts preferences to set options related to retrieving messages"!!
So it seems it's really for receiving/incoming mails. (Where else should it be possible to edit that port?)

  • User cannot retrieve mail

I have a number of Windows users who are using pop to get their mail from my server.
One of the users has recently lost the ability to get their mail, they are continuously offered the password panel and then told their password is incorrect.
I have tried reconstructing their mailbox and even gone as far as removing their complete user account and setting up from scratch.
The only way they can currently get their mail is if I use the aliases and get the incoming mail for the user sent to another users account.
    Any help would be appreciated

Try fully deleting the mailbox (WGM doesn't fully delete).
I'd recommend using SirAdmin (search and you'll find) or the instructions at:
    http://downloads.topicdesk.com/deletemailusers.pdf
Confirm you've deleted the user (SirAdmin or cyradm) and recreate.
    And after re-reading your post....
You may want to test the user/password. If you have clear-text POP logins enabled, do this from terminal
    telnet mail.domain.com 110
    user username
    pass password
    list
It should look something like this:
    x:/ jj$ telnet x.mac007.com 110
    Trying 10.9.8.2...
    Connected to x.mac007.com.
    Escape character is '^]'.
    +OK x.mac007.com Cyrus POP3 v2.2.12-OS X 10.4.0 server ready <[email protected]>
    user jj
+OK Name is a valid mailbox
    pass mypassword
    +OK Mailbox locked and ready
    list
    +OK scan listing follows
    1 47190
    2 10389
    3 11416
This allows you to test a pop login. If you can see the list of messages, the POP account should be working (on the server).

  • How do I change the default POP account directory (~/Library/Mail)?

With Mail 1.0 in 10.3.9, I could change the default ~/Library/Mail storage location for a POP account. I did this by setting up an account and in the advanced tab choosing a path.
With Mail 2.0 in 10.4.4, when going through the guided account setup, the directory option is no longer available. But the option still shows greyed-out, so I assume it's possible to change.
    <img src="http://www.j-arch.com/images2/mail.jpg" </img>
How do I get my POP account to store somewhere else?
    G4 1.25 MDD   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

hmmm.. I've been complaining about this to the engineers for over a year. The storage location should be chooseable as should there also be a backup feature (as in Addressbook and iCal).
for those that want to change this... it would be cool for someone to write a non cryptic, complete 1,2,3 stepped procedure.
That is.. exactly what do you change to what in the mail user preference file? And what do you use to change it.. text edit? "[ ]" heretofor = folder
I would like to change my Mail storage location to the my [Documents] . Using Text Edit, I went into my user [Library], to [Preferences] and opened the com.apple.mail.plist and changed all the ~/Library/mail storage locations to ~/Documents/Mail
lastly I moved the [Mail] that was in the [Library] to my [Documents].
Didn't work. Restarting Mail got me into the guided set a new account (and as far as I can see there IS no way of not taking the guided set up as alledged above). There must be something, some built-in direction other than in the [Preferences] defaulting mail to be saved in the [Library] folder
If someone has done this and been successful.. a 1,2,3.. list would be apprecaited... and please don't leave any details out. Thanks

  • Gmail pop account wont send mail

I set up a gmail account sucessfully, recieving mail was fine but when it came to sending i kept getting a message saying 'port 465 has been timed out'. I changed the port number a few different times to recommended ports but with no avail. I decided to delete this account and try setting up again as i may have done something wrong. I now can't recieve or send mail.
What is the correct port for a Gmail pop account?
Why has resetting it made things worse, as they ended up being the same setting as before?

I use port 25 with no problems for POP usage.
The only problem i have encountered is sending files over 5mb using POP, gmail rejects them. If I spilt it into two smaller files it is happy.
    No problem receiving big files.

    Hi StuNYC,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you're seeing an alert message when opening Mail on your iOS devices. Do you have multiple email accounts setup on the devices? Take a look at the article below, it provides suggestions that will resolve most issues that  cause an alert like that to appear in when starting the Mail app.
