One profile runs very slowly

I have a 2008 iMac running Lion.  There are 2 active profiles on the computer.  One of them runs extremely slowly and the other is fine.
I have moved all of the large files (iPhoto and iTunes) to an external drive.  There is plenty of hard disk space.  The profile that runs extremely slowly is the more lightly used profile (the user of that profile only occasionally uses Mail and Safari - hardly ever anything else).
I am completely baffled by this and would appreciate any insight that anyone can offer.  This has been going on for several weeks and is getting much worse in the last few days to the point that the slow profile is unusable.  I've had to force quit Mail and Safari and log off of the user account - only to have the applications slow to a halt again upon re-signing in.
Thanks in advance for any help.

An update:  I paid for a support ticket and spent the better part of 3 hours over 2 days fixing this. Had to delete hidden files, rebuild indexes, re-index items. It was quite complicated and time consuming.
If you are having this issue I suggest you spend a few bucks and get professional help.

  • Computer running very slowly

Computer has been running very slowly for some time and I have decided to try and find out what is wrong.
I have several folders on my desktop, some of which contain many jpegs.  I know I they are causing part of the problem.  Can I just put all the folders into one folder and move that new folder to the documents folder in my home folder?
I have never emptied my downloads folder.  Does that play a role in my computer being slow?
I don't know how much of these are relevant but maybe?
Computer came with 10.6 and has been updated to Yosemite.
I have a bootable clone on my external HD which I use as a backup.  Today, for the first time, I can't boot from the external.
I am the only user of the machine, but I do have another account.  Last night I tried to switch users and it just wouldn't switch.  I waited over 5 minutes.
I have emptied all trash (desktop, iTunes, iPhoto) and have reset Safari (clear history and website data).
I looked at activity monitor and though I'm not sure what I'm looking I copied these numbers:
for the CPU %used was System .71 (and that was in red), user .91 and idle 98.2
for the memory I have 2.0G memory and am using 1.94
for disk activity data read/sec is 758 kb and data written /sec 12.0 KB (in red)
    Thanks for any help/advoce.

  • Mac is running very slowly.

    Hi Apple Community,
My mac has been running very slowly, and there has been several other problems as well. I have a early 2009 iMac, running OS X 10.9.5. First of all, I have recently moved all of my photos and music to an external hard drive to clear up the internal hard drive, and Time Machine is also backing up to an external hard drive, and the internal hard drive is now about 60% free. I thought that would be able to get my Mac to run quicker, but it is still has slow as it was before. I have read recent community posts on what to do about this, one suggested downloading Etresoft to get a report on the condition of my mac. I ran Etresoft (I honestly don't know what to make of anything in the report), and the report is here:
    Problem description:
Mac runs very slowly, applications will take longer than usual to open. Internal hard drive is about 60% full, and 3 external hard drives are used to hold photos, music, and backups.

So if someone could please explain what this means, or suggest some other ways to find out what is wrong with my Mac, it would be extremely helpful.
    Thanks
    Morgan

You need to uninstall all Norton Antivirus softwarwe/ utilities.
    https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/kb20080427024142EN_En dUserProfile_en_us
Also, uninstall all Seagate hard drive software.
In addition, you need to install more RAM into your iMac.
Your year and model IMac can take a max. total of 8 GBs of RAM.
I strongly recommend that you purchase and install the maximum amount of RAM.
Correct, compatible and reliable Mac RAM can ONLY be purchased from online RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).

  • FCPX hangs on loading event in boot up, but when it does boot it runs very slowly.

    I'm having a problem with FCP 10.0.9
When I try to open the program it gets hung up on the opening logo at loading event. I get a message that FCP is not responding in the force quit menu,  but after around 6 hours FCPX opens up, but runs very slowly. I can see all of my projects and everything appears to be intact.
I'd like for FCPX to run smoothly again so I am looking for advice on how to fix it.
    Here is some pertinent information.
    I'm working on an 2.93 GHz intel core 7 iMac / 16GB memory / ATI Radeon HD 5750 1024 MB / OS 10.7.5
Everything is on an external 12tb Raid drive that has 5.7 TB free and is connected via Firewire 800.
The footage has been going into FCP is Arri Alexa footage that has been transcoded using Devinci resolve and proxies were created for all the footage within fcp.
My event folder is around 600 gb and the transcoded footage that has been imported into FCP is around 6TB
I've been working for about 3 weeks and have everything broken into 4 projects within one event and everything was working smoothly until yesterday.
I have no compound clips, but all of my imported footage has been synced, multicam-ed and organized by keyword collections.
I've tried loading the even backup to no avail (and foolishly I did not have backups stored anywhere else)
    I've tried trashing preferences.
    I've tried reinstalling the program.
I've tried hiding events and projects with Event Manager X.
I've tried running diagnostics using the digital rebellion pro maintenance tools Corrupt Clip Finder, Project repair, and Quick Fix but everything came back clean.
One person at Apple technical support suggested I move the footage out of my event folder In pieces to see if there was a corrupt clip. First I removed the proxies and then the original media and then everything else (including all render data) until the only thing in the even folder was the event itself, but still FCP hung up on boot up.
Another apple technical support person suggested I should have optimized my media (which I did not do) but after getting FCP to boot up I let it optimize all my media overnight and this has not had any significant effect.
My console displays lots of error messages end with "Too many SQL Variables"
Another error message I am getting in console is:
Class CMIOGraphService is implemented in both /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreMediaIO.framework/Versions/A/CoreMediaIO and /Applications/Final Cut Pro.app/Contents/Frameworks/CoreMediaLion/CoreMediaIO.framework/Versions/Curren t/CoreMediaIO. One of the two will be used. Which one is undefined.
When I hide the event but keep the projects in their proper place FCP boots up quickly and my projects are all there but none of the footage appears since it is all within my event.
One thing I am reluctant to try but may end up doing if I cannot find the correct answer from this internet community is Export and XML and use Xto7 to try to open it up in FCP7 and finish the project there. This feels like something that is going to cause me problems down the road, but I'm unsure.
As is almost always the case, I'm under an impossibly tight deadline so any advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Brody

Quite the same problem here: FCP X (10.0.9) crashed while quitting, now it's always hanging up (opening logo freezes while displaying "loading .... event"). The Console says: "SQLite error code:1, 'too many SQL variables'".
The difference maybe is that my event isn't that big. 350 GB, including the original and transcoded media. The fcpevent file itself is about 340 MB. Unfortunately (my fault!) I didn't backup any of the .fcpevent files.
Is there any possibility to repair the .fcpevent file? I tested the repair tool by digital rebellion, but still no success. Are there any other ideas?
    Thanks!

  • Yosemite running very slowly on new MacBook Pro

I just bought a new 13" MacBook Pro (not Retina) last month.  When I set it up I copied the data and apps from my 2006 MacBook running Snow Leopard.  When I try to open apps such as Safari or jEdit or Adobe Reader or NeoOffice it seems to wait forever (or at least 30 seconds) to open them.  I thought this would be faster than Snow Leopard, but it's not!
Should I just back this all up with my SuperDuper and start over?
    Here are my Etrecheck data:

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
One of the myths that circulate on this site is the myth that the current version of OS X always needs to more than 4 GB of memory to run well. The myth is based on nothing except the fact that some people keep repeating it. Apple is today selling new Macs with 4 GB of memory that can never be upgraded after they leave the factory. Those Macs come with Yosemite preinstalled, and it can never be downgraded to an older version. So if you were to believe the myth, you would also believe that Apple knows that it's selling products that are permanently crippled right out of the box, no matter how they're used. Read this discussion before you spend money on memory that you may not need.
Some users do need more than 4 GB of memory for full performance. They are running memory-intensive applications, such as photo or video editors, or they're running many programs concurrently, or they have more than one account logged in at the same time. Whether you're one of those users can be determined, in part, by observing the level of memory pressure in the Memory tab of the Activity Monitor window. If the memory pressure graph always stays in the green zone, then a shortage of memory is not causing the problem.
Even if memory pressure is high, that doesn't necessarily mean that adding more memory will help. If one or more processes has a memory leak—a kind of bug—then adding memory, no matter how much, won't help. It will merely delay the onset of the problem, perhaps only by a few minutes or less. That is very likely the case if you already have more than 4 GB.

  • Macbook Pro Running Very Slowly

Lately, my Macbook Pro has been running very slowly. The rainbow wheel keeps popping up and it takes a very long time to open windows or quit applications. Also, the computer gets really slowly even if only a few applications are open (e.g. Microsoft Word and iTunes). This problem has started recently, a few months after installing OSX 10.9.5. I don't know if this is the problem, if the hard drive needs to be cleared, some programs are taking up too much RAM, or if the computer is just getting old. Any help would be appreciated, and I have included the EtreCheck below as well.

  • Macbook running very slowly

Hello - I have a white Macbook bought three years ago running Mac OS X 10.4.11 with a 2GHz processor and 1GB SDRAM.
I've been very happy with my purchase and use it mainly for word processing, internet, watching DVDs and email use.
Recently, for no apparant reason, it suddenly began to run very slowly - and I mean slow. It can take 10-15 minutes to open an application.
I have not installed any software or, as far as I know, visited any dodgy websites.
Following some advice from Apple forums I looked at the activity monitor in the utilities folder and this is what I found:
CPU is around 2% used by the user and 2% used by the system with about 96% idle.
System memory is 183MB wired, 184MB active, 255MB inactive, 623MG used.
Disk usage: space utilised 68MB, space free 5.37MB.
Again following advice from Apple forums I created a new user, logged out and logged in again as the new user and the Mac works fine - very quick liked it used to be.
I assume this indicates that the problem isn't with the computer hardware, but with my original user account?
I've tried starting the Mac while holding the Option key down. It seemed to help for a bit and then slowed down again.
I have two CD disks that came with the original documentation - Mac OS X Install Discs 1 and 2.
My question is this - is there any way I can fix the original user account so it runs properly again?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Many thanks to Michael for pointing me in the right direction.
I've made some progress on this and thought it might be useful to detail what I did here in case it proves useful to anyone experiencing the same problems.
Prompted by Michael's suggestion that the hard drive was struggling to cope through lack of space I carried out a thorough spring clean of my files, deleting any that I didn't need any more.
Because the machine was responding so slowly this was a laborious process. It may be worth noting that image, sound and video files are big memory eaters.
I also cleared out the trash.
Then I cleared out the library>cache.
I then started the laptop up in safe mode (holding down the shift key after the start-up tone), which also apparantly deletes some unwanted files.
I then started the machine up normally. Much better, much faster. According to the Activity Monitor the space free on the desk has gone from 5.37MB to about 7.5MB.
What to do next? Some disk maintenance my be in order.
Michael suggests Drive Genius, but as far as I can tell this is only available for more recent operating systems that the one I have on my laptop.
Others have suggested OnyX which is free, but this also appears to be for OS X 6 or later.
I haven't to find suitable versions of these yet, so can't comment on their effectiveness.
But now at least I have a functioning laptop
    Thanks

  • Sender ID Filter running very slowly

    Hi,
I have recently deployed a test Exchange 2013 with the mailbox role and client access roll on Windows server 2012 R2
The test machine is also a DC, DNS server, DHCP Server. I have no edge transport server, the Frontend transport connector, ie SMTP service is being used.
Exchange 2013 has been updated to CU7 and windows server 2012 has all the latest updates installed from windows update.
The problem i am having is the Sender ID filter, installed with the anti-spam configuration, is running very slowly.
If i use the Test-SenderID cmdlet with any external address it can sometimes take minutes to come back with the test result.
However sometimes it comes back quite quickly - its somewhat intermittent. It doesn't matter what 'PurportedResponsibleDomain' i use or IPaddress for the test - the majority of the time its very slow, although occasionally it will come back within a second
with the result, but do the same test again with the same parameters and its back to a minute or 2 again.
This slow response is replicated with a SMTP test via telnet, upon the final '.' to send the email, it can hang for a minute or 2. If i disable the SenderID filter i get the acknowledgement from the SMTP server within a second. This occurs if i telnet direct
from the exchange machine, or from another machine on the network.
    Things i have observed:
-After a couple of days from rebooting the server - the SenderID filter suddenly, for apparently no reason, starts responding instantly, with the Test-SenderID cmdlet consistently returing results within a second - ie problem resolved. If i reboot the server
im back to the slow running.
-Internal email is being delivered fast, no delays
-External email is delayed by a minute or 2, confirmed to be caused by the SenderID filter.
    Things i have checked:
-DNS configuration looks good, no problems, all Local IP's on the 1 and only adapter have A records. There is a valid MX record, external DNS records for the mail domain are correct. I have put valid SPF records for the dc domain etc.
-No errors in application logs other than the usual suspects from exchange 2013 (a few performance counter errors)
-No DNS errors or warnings in the event logs.
-InternalSMTPServers on the TransportConfig has been set to the IP assigned to the adapter. I have also tried adding all IP's on  this adapter (there are 4), and even 127.0.0.1 to this InternalSMTPServers list, but it makes no difference for external
mail or the Test-SenderID cmdlet. It does however speed up a telnet smtp test direct from the exchange machine as the internalSMTPServers list results in a bypass.

    Hi Gavin,
I notice that there are some performace counter errors from Exchange 2013, sometimes performance issue can cause mailflow delay. Would you like to list some errors without sensitive information for the further troubleshooting?
How about the impact, one user or all users? How about in OWA, does the email from outside delay in OWA?
If you suspect this delay issue caused by Sender ID filter, I suggest disable it for a little while and use a test external account send an email for testing.
If everything goes well without configuring Sender ID filter, it seems an issue on Sender ID filter configuration.
More details on how to configure Sender ID filter as below:

  • My iPod Touch 4 responds and runs VERY slowly, it is probably not even a year old, is restoring it the only option?

My iPod runs VERY slowly, I preordered it when the first white iPods came out. Even typing here it can't keep up, I know if you have less than 6 GB left on your memory it supposedly runs slowly so I deleted stuff and have 13 GB left, I also always close my apps every few hours and my apps always shut down unexpectedly or even before the app can get to the main screen. I do not want to but a new one at all and my dad suggests restoring it and putting it to its original settings but I'm afraid I'll lose my smurfs village and tiny tower. So is restoring your iPod the only way to improve the speed or are there other things?

Try backing up the iPod and then restoring friom backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
If you restore from iTunes backup make sure that all you synced media like apps and music are in your iTunes library since synced media is not in the backup. You iPod will be like it was, included app data like saved games, when the backup was made.

  • My desktop is running very slowly

My desktop is running very slowly - any suggestions for a quick temporary fix?

    Mac OS X (10.6.8)
If the above is your correct system profile, along w/MichelPM's excellent suggestions, also do the following:
Disconnect all devices from the computer then do the following:
Boot up from your Snow Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer and repair permissions directly from Disk Utility.
If Disk Utility is unable to complete the repair, you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior, Techtool PRO (not Deluxe) or Drive Genius.

  • My imac is running very slowly, what can i do?

my imac is running very slowly, what can i do?

Your profile was way out of date so the updater I gave you will not be suitable.   This thread does prove the need to keep up to date.
The 4GB is sufficient for your apparent needs though it may be helpful to apply the updater below for the newly advised OS.   It may take some time; it is a biggie!
Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1   Then check things out.
If that doesn't help check out the number of operations that are running in the background.   If you have the iStat Pro app located in your dashboard, that will help.   It's an excellent app - and free.   See if they're all necessary.
Apple - Downloads - Dashboard Widgets - iStat Pro
Almost certainly others will chip in soon but hopefully I've set you on your way.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
