One question about arch linux 2009.02 and ext4

hi,
i want to download newest arch linux version. i heard i can select file system type as ext4, that sounds cool, because i really want ext4. anyway i heard that you need grub2 to properly boot ext4 arch system. so is grub2 will be included in arch linux 09.02? because my root partition is going to be in ext4 file system. thanks for help

I've never done any benchmarks, but I can tell you that file system checks are many, many times faster.
I do have a warning though, and it can be confirmed by others in this forum: ext4 does not crash gracefully right now. If you're on an unstable system, crashing can cause the loss of at least configuration files. My workstation is rock solid, so I've never seen any issues. Another computer that I was working on was having crashes due to an older Intel card with the newer xorg, and configuration files were being killed all over the place.
Thanks. another thing is that about application start up. for example for me firefox starts in 4 seconds, when i close ff and try to run it again, it opens in about 1 second. what it would with ext4 system? maybe it would launch in 2 seconds at first start?
It's hard to guess like that, but it's bound to be the same or faster. You're not losing anything going ext4 and it is a faster filesystem in general.

  • One question about Pricing and Conditions puzzle me for a long time!

One question about Pricing and Conditions puzzle me for a long time.I take one example to explain my question:
1-First,my sale order use pricing procedure RVAA01.
2-Next,the pricing procedure RVAA01 have some condition type, such as EK01(Actual Costs),PR00(Price)....,and so on.
3-Next,the condition type PR00 define the Access Sequences PR00 as it's Access Sequences.
4-Next,the Access Sequences PR00 have some Condition tables, such as:
         table 118 : "Empties" Prices (Material-Dependent)
         table 5 : Customer/Material
         table 6 : Price List Type/Currency/Material
         table 4 : Material
5-Next,I need to maintain Condition tables's Records.Such as the table 5(Customer/Material).I guess the sap would supply one screen for me to input the data of table 5.At this screen, the sap would ask me to select one table, such as table 5.When I select the table 5,the sap would go to the screen to let me input the data of table 5.But when I use the T-CODE VK31 or VK32 to maintain Condition tables's Record,I found it's total different from my guess:
A-First,I can not found one place for me to open the table, such as table 5,to let me input the data?
B-Second,For example, when I select the VK31->Discounts/Surcharges->By Customer/Material,the sap show the grid view at the right side.At the each line of the grid view, you need to select the Condition Type at the first field. And this make me confused very much. Why the sap need me to select one Condition Type but not the Condition table? To the normal logic,it ought not to select Condition table but not the Condition Type!
Dear all,I'm a new one in sd.May be this is a very stupid question. But it did puzzle me for a long time.If any one can  explain this question in detail and let me understand the concept,I will appreciate him/her very much.Thank you.

    Hi,
You said that you are using the T.codes VK31 or VK32.
These transaction codes are used to enter condition records for standard condition types. As you can see a grid left side having all the standard condition types like price, discounts, taxes, frieghts.
Pl check using T.code VK11 OR VK12 (change mode)
Here you can enter the required condition type, in the intial screen. (like PR00, MWST, K004, K005 .....etc)
After giving the condition type, press enter or click on Combinations icon on top of the screen. Then you can see all the condition tables which you maintained for that condition type. Like as you said table 118, table 5, table 6 and table 4.
You can select any table and press enter, then you can go into the screen in which you have all the field cataglogues you maintained for that table. For example you selected combination of Customer/Material (table 5) then after you press enter then you can see customer field on top, and material fields.
You can give all the required values and save the conditon record.
    Hope this is clear.
    REWARD IF HELPFUL.

    praveen

  • Arch linux time and date weirdness

A while back I unplugged my arch linux hard drive for a certain reason, and that froze the time on it, so I had to reset the time when i booted it back up.  Now, whenever I boot up I get an error message about "the last session is in the future" and I can't boot.  I adjusted the bios clock to a few months a ahead and that fixed it, but of course that's not a permanent solution.  because of this time error some secure sites like gmail and my online banking site are inaccessible because of invalid certificates.
How do i fix this problem?

    k_ibou wrote:
when you receive that message you will be prompt to enter you root password to solve the problem. And it give you the command.
    So I recommend you:
    1)  to set up the bios with the right date and hour.
    2) boot to archlinux and do as I said above. You must read carefully the text, you will see a comand.
    3) If you have more than one partition if probably that you must do it again for the partition that is set in future. Just copy the command and change / for that you need to repair.
    4) when you boot to your DE do this in console: # date --set "Y/M/D h:m"
I think with that should be ok, you can check your rc.conf in the option of hardwareclock
I tried both k_ibou's and Mardoct's solutions and neither worked.  I still get the the "...in the future" error upon booting.  I also tried one other solution, but apparently hwclock is not the same as BIOS clock.  I need to boot into Arch with the CORRECT time in the BIOS, so that I don't get that "future" error when I reboot.  I saw no command outside of "mount -o -n remount,rw /", which doesn't seem to actually do anything.

  • Arch Linux install and management on multiple workstations

    Hello
I've been asked to install and manage an installation of 20+ computers at my school. They will be dual-boot with Windows and Linux. Even though i've never used Arch, i chose it for the install because i've heard a lot of good about it. I ask for tips on installing and managing such an installation. All the computers and their disks are identical, and i wish all my systems to be identical as well. There is a separate server with LDAP to which i have no root access, but which holds all user accounts.
    Install:
I probably can suffer installing all the systems manually. I'll dedicate one workstation and create an ftp mirror so that i may do a netinstall on the others -- is this an ok idea? Also, how can i setup hostnames? Can DHCP do this?
    Management:
The computers will be randomly shut down and powered on as the users please. Perhaps i can boot them all on once a fortnight and use cssh (cluster ssh) to do a system update -- but maybe there is a better way? A local mirror of the packages seems wise. I don't think it's a good idea to create a diskless setup, since if all machines are powered on at once it will significantly decrease boot time and increase network usage, to the annoyance of the users.
I ask for criticism of those ideas and additional hints.
PS. I appreciate the joke of asking someone without a Linux installation what the output of a Linux command is:) (when registering to this forum)

If I was in your position...
Setup arch on one machine, from scratch to production ready, with the following in mind.
-Decide what desktop environment and window manager(s) you want installed/want to support.
-Which applications your users will need
-Which privileges are required or groups your users will need to be in.
-Install everything, and note the names of the packages, everything installed after the base install.
Then make a simple setup sh script that calls pacman to install everything you need and check any settings/group memberships etc, checking the logs afterwords to make sure that there were no issues. You could use this to streamline setup on the rest, or just do what tomk said and clone it.
I wouldn't wait more than a week between updates. You could probably setup a cron job to run pacman and accept the defaults. You should run this on a test machine before the rest though to insure nothing breaks; that happens occasionally.
I would probably choose Gnome as the DE personally. Not that it is any better than the others, but it is what I am familiar with, and seemed a bit less cluttered than KDE last time I used it. Less clutter and easily changeable settings means less time fixing users' mistakes.
You could setup your own local arch repo/mirror and just have the rest of the machines sync from that, it'd save a lot of bandwidth and make updates a bit faster.

  • Searching for a good book about [Arch Linux]

    Hello friends,
I'm here stuck with Windows 8, making a couple of tests about installing Arch Linux in VMware Workstation, if it succeeds, I'll move to Arch completely. My question is: Is there a good book about Arch (installation, maintenance, best practices, security, and so on)? I tried "Arch Linux Environment set-up How-To", but unfortunately, it wasn't what I expected.
    I'm a little confused about UEFI + GRUB2 + GPT/MBR but I think I'll dominate it soon...
    My system:
    [PROCESSOR] >> Intel® Core™ i7-3840QM (8M Cache, up to 3.80 GHz)
[GRAPHICS] >> Dual Nvidia GeForce GTX 680M GPU With 4GB GDDR5 Video Memory (SLi)
    [RAM] >> 16GB DDR3 SDRAM 1600MHz
    [SSD] >> OCZ Vertex 4 (256GB)
[HDD] >> Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid (750GB)
I wonder in how many seconds the system will boot up...

@op  As others have mentioned, do not seek out knowledge from a book.  There has been quite a few shifts in Archlinux, specifically to uefi and systemd.  There are a few starters for your concern.
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Un … _Interface
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/UEFI_Bootloaders
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners'_Guide/Installation
Other then that, there is the forums and a quick search will land you on a goldmine of knowledge.  Great idea to start it up in a vmware, although it will not require the uefi boot, but it will still get you a bit more familiar with the install process and iron out some basic questions.  Good luck!

  • Arch Linux Donations and 501(c) Status?

I have an opportunity to donate to a non profit organization of my choice through my employer, Kellogg's, who will match my contributions. The first thing that came to mind was the Linux community and specifically, my OS of choice Arch Linux.
The non profit organization however, has to be a 501(c) status. I couldn't find any info regarding Arch's 501(c) status.
Would someone here be able to answer this question?

You might get a faster response if you directly contact one of the devs (Aaron?). Paraphrasing Allan, "nobody that matters follows the forum".
Having posted that, the probability of someone answering your question here within the next 5 minutes (and even as I write this) has increased significantly.

Gah, not trying to go off-topic here, but I just got an idea for a new cereal... Archies! Cereal "1"s and "0"s, maybe some "#!"s, and marshmallow Arch logos. May as well make it "Distros!" and throw in some other marshmallow logos... red Debian swirls... nom nom nom.

Hi everyone. I both a Mac Pro 15" in March 2009. Five month ago I  was forced to buy by one new hard drive and extent the memory, because I had to make the upgrade (and pay) to install the new Lion operation system. Four days ago the Mother-board fails. To change it will cost a fortune. What should I do or expect from Apple to solve this problem? I am very disappointed because my trust on Apple was destroyed.

I am not sure why you are upset with Apple. Electronics equipment does fail. If the product is out of warranty or you do not have AppleCare there's not much you can do with Apple. Apple will charge you for the repair. Suggest you look for a third party repair store since they are usually less expensive than Apple. Alternatively you can buy one for about $850US and install it yourself. Sorry, but there aren't many choices in this situation.

  • Questions about Assumption of Liability and device to be used for unlimited data plan

This is my first post on here. I have an opportunity that someone I know is willing to transfer his smartphone plan with unlimited data to me. I have read extensively on here and other sites and gathered some information, and also heard of many complications and questionable losses of unlimited data plans when making various types of changes to devices or services. Some of what I read may be outdated as well if Verizon has made changes in their policies, so I will start with the most obvious question: as of this date, is an AOL possible while keeping the unlimited data plan intact?
If so, here are some other questions I have:
-Will I receive a new SIM card by mail or do I need to use my friend's old SIM card?
-If my ultimate end goal is to use laptop, do I have to connect through a smartphone (and is there any additional charge for that, or would it change the plan), or can I put the SIM card in a mobile hotspot such as the MHS291L and use only the data portion of the plan?
-After getting the plan, is there any way I can get TWO SIM cards - one for a mobile hotspot, and the other strictly for voice and text? If so, how much extra would that cost?
-If we went to a Verizon store to do this transfer or AOL, how can we be absolutely certain it goes smoothly, that no one makes any unauthorized plan changes and does not lose the unlimited data? I have unfortunately read some horror stories of it being lost in similar situations, no one seems to be accountable, and it winds up costing someone countless hours of struggle with Verizon to try to get it back (whether they are successful or not I don't know).
-If at some point the SIM card was lost (such as if I lost the device), can it be replaced without affecting the plan?
For what it's worth (especially for those working for Verizon), I am not looking for a way to hog up absurd amounts of data but simply to be able to do the basic stuff I need to online and maybe watch a movie once in a while without having really huge bills. Even if I used the internet without giving data consumption a second thought, I doubt I'd go much over 25-30GB most months.
Thanks to whoever can provide me with information.

Hi NicandroN_VZW, sorry i did not see your reply in time but thank you just the same. I called the number for the AOL department and they were able to help me with it pretty easily and answer most of my questions
I do have a couple other questions regarding the unlimited data plan on smartphones. I have seen various comments regarding these things online, and i can make a good guess about what "might work," but i'm really looking to know Verizon's official policy on these things, if one exists. In case any non-verizon employees are able to provide this information as well, if you have references to where i can find it in writing that would be helpful.
First, i realize there is an optional $30 fee for mobile hotspot use. But does Verizon have any policy about whether this fee must be paid if i connect only via a USB cable (since it would not actually be a "hotspot," and could not connect multiple devices)?
And my other question is, if i do opt to pay the $30 hotspot fee, is there any policy either for or against using that SIM card in a 4g hotspot such as the MHS291L?
PS i am asking these things here rather than by PM because, given the wide range of opinions which can be found online and that others have looked into similar things, i am sure other people could also benefit from knowing Verizon's policy regarding these things.

  • Modifying the stock arch linux kernel and kernel timer frequency

so if i understand correctly, if we want to modify the stock arch linux kernel, we have to pull it off of abs. ie "ABSROOT=. abs core/linux" then modify the pkgbuild, uncommenting out make menuconfig and setting the pkgbase name to something different than stock. ie, "linux-custom" then update the checksums followed by importing the gpg keys, ie "gpg --recv-keys 79BE3E4300411886 and gpg --recv-keys 38DBBDC86092693E" for the kernel and patches. then run makepkg -s.
we can't just run make menuconfig on the current kernel that's installed?
and if we pull the linux kernel from abs to customize, does it already come preconfigured with all the arch changes and settings? like its no different than the current one installed?
i just ask because for the most part, i like the current arch kernel, there are just a few minor things i want to change but kept everything else the same as stock arch linux kernel.
also, i herd arch uses 300hz for its timer. whats the benefits and disadvantage of using 300hz over 1000hz for a desktop system?

orlfman wrote:we can't just run make menuconfig on the current kernel that's installed?
No you can't, because the kernel then has to be compiled so the kernel will run with the different tick rate.

As I understand it from the Wiki, the ABS pulls the PKGBUILD and other arch-specific sources from the ArchLinux script server. However, I don't use the ABS, but pull the files I need directly from the ArchLinux SVN and build using makepkg[1] after making the necessary changes.
orlfman wrote:Also, I heard arch uses 300hz for its timer. whats the benefits and disadvantage of using 300hz over 1000hz for a desktop system?
You're in for a technical discussion here. This has a reasonably friendly discussion on kernel tick rates.
Basically, higher tick rates = a higher level of timing precision & higher processor load, lower tick rates = lower level of timing precision & lower processor load.
[1] Technically, I use the clean chroot manager package, which is a wrapper for makechrootpkg (which in turn is a wrapper for running makepkg in a clean chroot if I'm not mistaken).

    Hello,
This is a two part problem and I didn't know where to post them.  I have am asus eee laptop, using arch linux with openbox.
First - how can I make trayer stay below all other windows, right now it above them?

  • A question about Droid pre-order and contract status

    Hi,
I preorded the droid from best buy the first day preorders were available. The person who handled my order didn't mention problems with my current contract status. My 2yr contract isn't up till 4/2010, and from reading here, it seems that best buy doesn't do the 1yr early upgrades.
So when I go down to best buy on friday to attempt to pick up my phone what are gonna be my options?
$599 retail price, or nothing? And so, will they refund my $50?
Would they do the 1yr and $369 price, if they consider I put in over one year on my current contract and consider it a $1yr? (I read someone say this would be an option)
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Who does best buy sell phones to if they don't offer upgrades? Just new customers and people with expired accounts?
Can someone explain this post to me? http://www.howardforums.com/showpost.php?p=13177342&postcount=32
According to the guy that posted that, he was orginally denied, like has been said here. but then the looked it up and told him they'd honor the 1yr early upgrade.
To me, it just doesn't make much sense to not honor what verizon does.. cause you'd be losing lots of business. Anyone who is up for NE2, and denied honoring it by BB will just go to the verizon store, or order it online via verizons website. Anyone 1 year into their 2 year contract who is denied the 1yr early upgrade that verizon offers, and who doesn't care much about waiting for their $100-$50 NE2 discount will again be forced to buy elsewhere cause BB turns them away.
I'm not trying to make threats that BB needs to change. Just trying to draw attention to something that makes no sense to lots of customers. And would like someone to actually look into this again, since it seems to vary from store to store, clerk to clerk.
