One quick dumb question on BM3.9sp1

I have running on nw65sp7 edir 8.7.9.
Want to patch all servers, which are all the same as above, with nw65sp8.
Prior to want to upgrade to edir 8.8 on all boxes including BM.
I believe BM3.9sp1 is supported on edir 8.8, correct?
Any other gotcha's with this arrangement?
Thanks all!

I should have been more informative, I saw that tid, references 8.8sp3.
I believe it should be supported under 8.8sp4? right?

• Two really quick/dumb questions!

Hi All,
I have just bought a new Mac Mini and hooked it up to my Samsung 55 inch TV via HDMI and everything seems do be working great.
My two dumb questions are:
1: where on the new OS (I had a Mac 5 years ago and things have changed) is the top "Finder" bar and "disc" icon to save files?
2: In Safari I do not seem to have a tools bar where I can for example open another tab for a new web page.
Hope you can help a nubby :-)

You are running a Mini so it might be that the screen resolution is not exact for your display. I have used a Mini with a conventional display but not HDTV. You might need to go into the settings for the TV to set the screen resolution to accommodate the mini's capabilities. Sorry that  I can't offer more on that score; when I use my Sony Bravia HDTV  it is with the iPad2 and HDMI and I have encountered no issues. Perhaps someone else on the forum has better insight into the Menu Bar problem on the Samsung as the principal display.

• Quick Dumb Question

I"m assuming when you upgrade from final cut express to final cut pro all your files and everything from express goes into final cut pro?? Correct? Also, what about imovie? Can you still import those files into final cut pro like you can with final cut express?

• NSLog - Quick Dumb Question

OK, where does the output appear when putting NSLog statements in your code? I can't find it.
I've put code in like NSLog(@"Got here") and enumeration of dictionaries but nothing ever shows up in the Simulator/Debug Debugger Console. Isn't that where it's supposed to be?

The Xcode Console window only shows messages from NSLog when running from the device (I never knew that) and is not much help when running the Simulator (and that's what I was using).
The Console.app does get the output from the Simulator but is congested with all the garbage collection crap from the system.
I guess I'll learn to debug more from the device. Thanks.

• Quick dumb question - Pre-running CC Particle World?

In Particular, you can pre-run your simulation so particles are born before time 00:00.   Is there a way to do this in Particle World? I seem to be missing it.

Pre-Comp the CC Particle World layer, then nudge it in time?
Of course, you loose the "camera awareness". You could have it by linking a camera inside the Pre-Comp with the main camera outside.
I am not aware of a built-in method.

• Quick dumb questions..

Hi.. i was just wondering about how to output dollar amounts that have thousands serperators. Thanks.

import java.text.*;
import java.util.Locale;
public class PrintNum {
      public static void main(String args[]) {
        // Amount to be formatted
        double amount = 400000.00;
        // Returns an object of type NumberFormat
        NumberFormat nf =
           NumberFormat.getCurrencyInstance(Locale.US);
        // Calls the format method on the NumberFormat object
        // to format the amount as desired and prints the
        // results to the screen
         System.out.println("He paid " +  nf.format(amount)
                               + " for the house.");
Results in:
He paid $400,000.00 for the house.

• One more dumb question

Say I have and editorPane, and i make it a html viewer, that much i know how to do. But i what i don't know how to do, is on a button event setPage() to some thing like www.yahoo.com for example. I know i would use the java.net.URL, but how do i get the applet to connect to the site. Some example code would be great. I've looked the java tutorial up and down, it's just not there.

By default, an Applet can only connect back to the server from which it was downloaded. Thus you will either need to sign the Applet, thus giving it permissions to connect to another server or implement some server side code e.g. a Servlet to which your Applet sends requests and which then forwards the HTML page back to the Applet.

• Might be a dumb question, but I am moving from 1st gen to iPadair; on Safari, 1st gen to delete apps/sites just visited, you could double tap home key and apps would appear on bottom and one could delete from there. How does it work on ipadair?

This may be a dumb question, but nonetheless, here goes:
I just moved from 1st gen ipad to new ipad-air. Great and happy! But, one thing I can't figure out how to do is to delete the pages/sites/apps that I have just used? For example, on the 1st gen. you could double-tap home button and past actions would come up on bottom of screen. I could then delete them one by one, to keep things cleaned up. Am I missing something here? Does it keep a log irregardless? Not the same as deleting history - at least didnt' work for me.

Close apps and not delete apps.
1. Double tap the home button to bring up the multi-tasking view
2. Swipe the app's windows upwards to close
3. The app will fly off the screen

• HT5312 This whole security question crap is a hassle. If I wanted to talk to someone one the phone to have some dumb questions reset, I would call them. Why can't they just send it in my dang e-mail. So forget it. I'll just forego the purchase.

This whole security question crap is a hassle. If I wanted to talk to someone on the phone to have some dumb questions reset, I would call them. Why can't they just send it in my dang e-mail. So forget it. I'll just forego the purchase.

Then call iTunes Support and get them reset:

or by email:

If you have another iOS device or another SMS-capable device, you can use this method:

Read the entire article carefully to see if this method would be a preferable approach for you.

• Two dumba$$ questions

Sorry, I know these are two really stupid questions, but I know nothing at all. I've just bought a new iBook after ahving a really ancient Mac. Both my questions are to do with Garageband...so here goes...
Question 1
What other equipment do I need to be able to record real instruments (string quartet)?
Question 2
I was just having some fun the other night, making up some stuff and trying to familiarize myself with the whole Garageband thing (which I love already).
As I was adding loops I had the sneaking suspicion that some where starting to go missing - why was there an 'Acoustic Noodling' numbers 2, 3, 4 etc but no number 1? Where were 'Asian Gamelan' 3 and 4?
Chose not to save anything I'd done so far and after did a quick search in the Garageband loops search bit, but nothing came up. Went through the installation disk thinking it would put back anything that had gone missing. Still nothing. Did a spotlight search and a few of the items I thought had gone missing were in iTunes.
Maybe they were never in the Garageband loops samples first place? Is this possible? Is there somewhere that lists what loops come with Garageband? I'm starting to doubt my own sanity, especially since I went through the installation disk...
I now have the following samples on my desktop - ones which I thought had gone AWOL:
Acoustic Noodling 1; Asian Gamelan 3 and 4;
Middle Eastern Oud 3 and 4.
I have tried to drag them into the Garageband loops section, but they seem to disappear into the iTunes...I have no idea what's going on...
Apologies in advance for these dumb questions.

For what you need to do your string quartet recording, read HangTime's FAQ to get started:
http://www.thehangtime.com/gb/gbfaq2.html
Contrary to what you might think, you probably don't want to record the four members of the quartet separately on their own tracks, each with a mic close to the instrument. String quartets need to play all the parts together at once, to get the best feel and performance.
You'll probably want to put up a pair of mikes arranged in a stereo pattern, at some distance from the string quartet (a couple of meters at least), in a nice live-sounding room. Mike placement techniques are hard to describe in this kind of forum, but you can find textbooks on the subject with diagrams.
You'll need a matched pair of better-than-average-quality condenser microphones, and an audio-to-computer interface with better-than-average preamps.

• Strange behaviour on two New BM3.9sp1 servers

Hi All
Environment BM3.9sp1, fresh install on NW6.5SP7 with tcp patch, Surfcontrol, 16GB ram, Dell PE2950's.
On two new servers we are seeing this wierd error whereby i can be viewing "www.amazon.com" and all is working great, then i perhaps wait a while then try and go back and for some reason i cannot connect to that site at all but i can to others.
However if i switch my proxy to "newserver2" then it works for a while until it doesnt and then i have to switch back then all is well again!. This isnt just for amazon that is just an example. Ive tried the proxy.cfg file from craigs site but i still am experiencing the same results.
Is BM somehow refusing to send me a page until a timeout period?. Its worth mentioning that when this happens collegues also cannot view that site going via the same proxy.
The site does resolve when i ping, as i thought it may be DNS but nope, a reboot will fix it.
Anyone got any ideas or have i cocked up the install somewhere?.
Cheers
Julian

Yes, in tip #1 at my web site, I recommend tcp681k after NW65sp7. Also
wsock6o and nwlib6l.
If you put on NW65SP8 (not yet listed in my tip #1, but I've been testing
it), you get tcp 6.82/6.92.

Thanks Craig, i have applied them patches and things seem well. To be honest i think i have traced the actual error i was receiving to a bug in Firefox 3 with static images and caching.
Can i bother you with a non-technical question?!, do you know of a roadmap for BorderManager (if any), are Novell going Astaro with Linux as its replacement and if they are how good will the eDirectory integration.
Apologies for this being out of the scope of this thread/forum.

• Dumb question re video card

I bought a radeon 9800 pro graphics card to upgrade my 64mb. stock card and before installing noticed that the new card has one DVI port and one VGA port. the box says it runs dual displays, right now I have dual CRTs running but want to run two flat panels soon.
so the dumb question, can I convert the VGA to DVI with just a cheap adapter and run dual flats without buying an expensive converter for the second VGA port?

Hi Prankster,
you wont be able to get dual digital support from the 9800 ...sorry.
Of course, you might be able to *physically connect* two digital flat panels to the card but one of the monitor connectors will be recieving an analog video input signal from this graphic card.
To get true dual digital support from ATI you would need the 9600 or 9700 Pro graphic cards.
Hope this helps !
Cheers,

• Dumb Question??

I hope the philosophy here is that there is no such thing as a dumb question.
Here goes.
Adobe Classroom in a Book for Premier Pro states that when opening a New Project under the Project tab you have two choices DV or HDV when in actuality the choices in my version of CS4 are HDV and QuickTime.  I have been under the impression that QuickTime can be either DV or HDV and with that premise I do not understand what my choices are.
Thanks
Kent

Different people's brains work differently.  I am convinced that right
brain/left brain only scratches the surface.  What is patently obvious
to one is shrouded in mystery to another.
(And then there's the issue of *my *brain.  I've killed so many of its

• Hi all .hope all is well ..A quick trim question

Hi all
Hope all is well ......
I have a quick trim question I want to remove part of a string and I am finding it difficult to achieve what I need
I set the this.setTitle(); with this
String TitleName = "Epod Order For:    " + dlg.ShortFileName() +"    " + "Read Only";
        dlg.ShortFileName();
        this.setTitle(TitleName);
        setFieldsEditable(false);
Now I what to use a jbutton to remove the read only part of the string. This is what I have so far
void EditjButton_actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
        String trim = this.getTitle();
          int stn;
          if ((stn = trim.lastIndexOf(' ')) != -2)
            trim = trim.substring(stn);
        this.setTitle(trim);
Please can some one show me or tell me what I need to do. I am at a lose

there's several solutions:
// 1 :
//you do it twice because there's a space between "read" and "only"
int stn;
if ((stn = trim.lastIndexOf(' ')) != -1){
        trim = trim.substring(0,stn);
if ((stn = trim.lastIndexOf(' ')) != -1){
          trim = trim.substring(0,stn);
//2 :
//if the string to remove is always "Read Only":
if ((stn = trim.toUpperCase().lastIndexOf("READ ONLY")) != -1){
       trim = trim.substring(0,stn);
//3: use StringTokenizer:
StringTokenizer st=new StringTokenizer(trim," ");
        String result="";
        int count=st.countTokens();
        for(int i=0;i<count-2;i++){
          result+=st.nextToken()+" ";
        trim=result.trim();//remove the last spaceyou may find other solutions too...
perhaps solution 2 is better, because you can put it in a separate method and remove the string you want to...
somthing like:
public String removeEnd(String str, String toRemove){
      int n;
      String result=str;
      if ((n = str.toUpperCase().lastIndexOf(toRemove.toUpperCase())) != -1){
       result= str.substring(0,stn);
      return result;
}i haven't tried this method , but it may work...

• This is in the category of "dumb" questions. I am adding a new iMac running

         This is in the category of "dumb" questions. To my home office that includes
a 2003 power pc G5 running system 10.4.11, I am adding a new iMac running
Lion. Question - can you share files back and forth (e.g., a Word file, camera images) by simply
coupling the two computers through USB ports? As opposed, for example, by burning
a DVD and using that in the other computer.

Why wouldn't you just use the network to share files, then?  Simply set up a folder on one of your systems (I would recommend the Lion system) for sharing, turn sharing on, and then connect to it from the other system.
