One roll of gray boxes

My question wasn't answered last time, so I'm re-posting it. I have one film roll that is made up completely of gray boxes, the thumnails and the full-size view in edit mode. The photos are there in the Finder, but not in iPhoto. Well, they are in iPhoto but they're missing. How can I get them back?
Thanks

I believe that Old Toad gave you the best way to do this in your previous post. You are going to have to fix this one roll by going into the iPhoto library via the Finder. Usually a big no-no, but to repair damage such as this it is necessary. Just procede with caution and be sure that you only copy and delete the files from this one roll.
From Old Toad's reply:
"1 - look in the Originals folder for the subfolder that represents that roll and copy it to the desktop.
2 - in iPhoto move that roll to iPhoto's trash bin and empty it.
3 - look in the Originals folder to see if that subfolder has been deleted from the Originals, Modified and Data folder. You will have to remove that roll's subfolder from the Originals as iPhoto ignores it.
4 - open iPhoto and import that folder on the desktop that you copied earlier.
This will give you that one roll back. You can make a backup copy of the iPhoto Library folder beforehand as a precaution."
If you have any questions about this procedure by all means post back. I'll do my best to talk you through it.

  • Can no longer save a new bookmark directly to one of my foldersin bookmarks w/o saving, then dragging it from recently bookmarked. Any way to go back to old style of brining up list of folders in the gray box when adding a new bookmark?

Until a recent update in Firefox, I could always save a new bookmark to the folder of my choice by using the drop down list in the gray box that comes up when I chose to bookmark a site. Now only a few of my folders - probably most recents - show up and I can't seem to access the whole list. I now have to go to "recently bookmarked" and drag the bookmark from there to the folder of choice. Any way to restore the ability to make it a one stop save to my folders like I used to? Thanks.

No, I see the three areas at the bottom of the Bookmark area that you refer to, but that also highlights an issue.  When I want to save a story to my Reading List and click on Share then "Add to Reading List" then go back to look at what is stored in the Reading List, my recently-saved item is not there.
I looked thru the History tab and the Reading List tab and have been in the Bookmark tab.  But even when I Save a Bookmark, that newly-saved Bookmark does not show up in the Bookmark area.
But then again, the next day (and actually just in the last half-hour) all of the functionality came back.  When I look at the Bookmarks, suddenly, again, all of the Bookmarks that are on my Safari browser on my iMac are now there, and I can now Save a Bookmark.
It keeps coming in and out and that is what is driving me a little nuts.
    Thanks.

  • I took a picture using camera plus app and the photo shows up in my camera roll; however, when I tap to view it a gray box shown instead. I tried to download the image and only the gray box shows. Can anyone help me?

I took a picture using camera plus app. The photo shows up in my camera roll as a thumbnail; however, when I tap to view the photo it comes up as a gray box. I tried downloading, emailing, and copying the picture, but it always saves as a gray box. Can anyone help me?

    Hi Giorgiovdb!
Unfortunately I cannot help you; all I did was test for you.
I did an upgrade over my Lion install with Mountain Lion which went fine. I just tested icon view in my Finder on different files and folders and here in my installation all stays fine; good readable like in column view!
The only thing you might try is change your Font in Finder and set it back to the original afterwards!
I quickly Google'd how to change fonts in the Finder as appearantly there's no obvious gui item for it:
    http://usermanifest.wordpress.com/2012/07/06/osx-finder-title-bar-font/
Try to see if it brings you anywhere!
At my post all fonts act normal after my upgrade to Mountain Lion; I don't do a clean install unless I really have to!
    Goodluck!

    Guitar21,
your MacBook Pro has booted into its Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities menu, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it get to the login screen now?

  • Lost photos and gray boxes

    Hello,
Why is there a iphoto library icon in the pictures folder? I thought I was i pictures and therefore thought I had duplicate photos of what i have in iphoto. I turns out that I deteted all of the folders, thumbs, jpg, etc from the iphoto library that was located in pictures. Now I have a bunch of gray boxes. At the bottom of the screen it indicates that i have 1 of 82 pictures so i think they are somewhere, but i don't know where. I also have not emptied the trash.
I would like to restore my computer to an earlier date especially if it means that i would get all my pictures back and reverese anything i did...is this possible?

    Hi Kathryn,
Take that stuff out of the trash right now!!!!!!!
You might be able to reconstruct the library.
take a look at the iPhoto Library folder info next:
This is a view of how the iPhoto Library looks in the Finder.
It is organized by Year folders. Inside the Year folders are Month folders. Inside the Month folders are the days of the Month. Inside the day folders are the photos you took on that day. If you imported video clips and RAW files on that day they will be in an Originals folder. If you have edited any photo imported on that day, the original will be in that folder also.
The iPhoto Library folder IS the folder that iPhoto imports all your images into.
Two Apple kbs for you to read
Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto library folder
    About the iPhoto Library folder
The Macintosh OS doesn't have the same option as windows do of "restoring to an earlier date"
If you can get the library put back together, launch iPhoto and if it recognizes the library it will open it. If it still is giving you gray boxes then you didn't put it back together right. With that few photos it might be easier to just create a new library and import the images back in.
    Close iPhoto
Rename your messed up iPhoto Library to "iPhoto Library_old"
Drag this library to your desktop
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
    Go to File>add to library
Navigate to the old library on your desktop and choose it.
iPhoto will start importing the images from your old library
    This is what to expect:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
Once all you images have been imported, check through the library and make sure everything looks ok.
You can now start making your Albums, and do your keywords or any other organizational steps.
You can also delete the old library on the desktop.
It is also a good time to backup this new library to CD/DVD by burning the iPhoto LIbrary folder in the Finder, or copying the iPhoto Library folder to an external drive formatted for Macs, or copying the iPhoto LIbrary folder to an iPod.
    Good luck!
good luck and get back with what you tried and what happened.

  • EPUB - GRAY BOXES Instead of Images

When exporting my epub book, I get gray boxes instead of images. Has anyone else run into this or know what to do to resolve this issue?
All the images are linked properly and InDesign is saying I don't have any errors. The only way I can get images to show up is ONLY if I select "Use Existing Image for Graphic Objects". But if I select this, I lose the cropping and orientation adjustments I've made in my inDesign file. I've even tried just copy and pasting an image into the document itself.
Needless to say I've spent way too long trying to figure this out and haven't made any progress...

If other people can export it fine but you can't, then I would suggest some troubleshooting of your InDesign install.
Have you tried rebuilding your preferences and then re-exporting?
Have you made sure you're not using any third-party plugins that automatically load with InDesign?
Assuming you've done those two tests and are still having a problem, then try it on a test account on your computer. Package the InDesign file and put it on a thumbdrive (or I guess you could just download the files from the link above) and then log out of your account on your computer, and log in again to a fresh new account with admin privileges. (If you haven't created one yet, you should do that first before logging out ... lol)
When you log in to the new account, all the apps are available to you but none of your other account's files or user settings. So open InDesign, download/copy over the packaged file, and open the layout and export. See if that makes any difference.
I have a short course on lynda.com on troubleshooting InDesign (just 10 short videos) that goes over these and other steps.

  • [SOLVED] Gray Boxes in GTK3/Gnome 3.4/Gnome Shell

    Greetings,
I have googled for this, but maybe my lack of ablility to exactly describe the issue as a search term is why I can't find anything. But I hve a problem that is just driving me crazy....
I have gray boxes that are round menu items, tab names, the clock and user name when screen is locked, etc... that is really throwing off the look of my desktop and driving me crazy.
Here are some screenshots to hopefully show what I mean.
The first two are with the adawita theme. The least one is with the evolve theme to show it doesn't seem to matter what the gtk theme is.
    Here is what I've done:
1.) This might be why it had happened: I tried out gnome-unstable for a few hours, to get a look at gnome shell 3.6. After deciding that I wasn't ready to move to it yet (some of the extensions that I'd still want for it aren't there yet), I removed the repository, did a pacman -Syy, did a pacman -Rcsn of gnome, then reinstalled gnome as per the wiki.
2.) I have removed all of the stuff on /home to get a fresh start after seeing the boxes.
3.) I have removed with Rcsn and reinstalled gnome.
4.) I have made sure to install the gtk2 theme engines, just in case.
5.) I read through the gtk+, gnome pages on our wiki.
    6.) I googled.
And yet, I still have those damnable graphic glitches....
So I am banging my head against a wall here, I do hope someone here can help, at least point me in the right direction. Thanks!
    UPDATE
Ok, so I have fixed my issue. I ended up pretty much removing everything except the base system, xorg, video drivers, and such. Somehow or another, there were left behind traces of my brief experiment with 3.6 that was causing the issue.
Once I got down to almost a fresh new start I was able to re-install gnome and the graphic mess-ups were gone.

Is it a problem with some GNOME libraries? How can i downgrade GNOME to its 3.2 version? (or its "3.4.0" version?)

  • One folder shows gray '!' marks... help! Clicked iDVD first by mistake...

I took over a hundred photos at a huge local car show and then downloaded them to my iMac using iPhoto '08 version 7.1.5 from my Canon digital. I have hundreds of folders in iPhoto and thousands of pictures so this is not my first time at the rodeo.
However, something went wrong when I went to burn this folder to a CD.
Initially, I hit "Share" and then mistakenly chose "Burn to iDVD". I clicked on that but when it came up, I realized that I did not want iDVD, I simply wanted to copy the pix onto a CD to take to work to share as I have done scores of times before.
So, I cancelled that action and went back to "Share", chose "Burn" and followed the same routine I always have. But after I burned the CD (which seemed to do it very quickly) all my pictures blinked out for a second and then ONLY this folder's pictures were now all gray boxes with a big "!" in each one.
I can use "Finder" to view the images (under 'All Images') and even use Preview to bring them up. But iPhoto does NOT cooperate with this folder.
What did I do wrong and how can I fix the pictures so they are like the thousands of others I have and can see them normally in iPhoto? I can't even email them and even those that are burned to the disc view the very same way - they are not viewable at all. Plus, the pix only show ~90kb for size when the original pix are all 1 meg or slightly bigger.
ALL other photos and folders are as before - only THIS one is weird. Is this iDVD related???
    HELP???

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    If that fails:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
    Regards

  • A blank gray box won't go away...why not? How can I get rid of it?

Every time I open Firefox, a gray box (about 1in x 1in) appears in the near upper left hand corner of my screen. When Firefox is open (and not hidden) the gray square covers any window that it is located over - this will included any non-Firefox applications. Only when Firefox is exited or hid will the gray square disappear. Please help!! I'd like this square to be gone.

This could be a feature of a Firefox add-on. A standard diagnostic to bypass interference by extensions (and some custom settings) is to try Firefox's Safe Mode.
First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See [[Backing up your information]]. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)
Next, restart Firefox in Firefox's Safe Mode ([[Safe Mode]]) using
Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode."
If the site works correctly, this points to one of your extensions or custom settings as the problem.
To further disable add-ons, you can try here:
    Tools > Add-ons > Plugins category

  • Gray box for logo generating pdf from fm book

    Greetings,
I have a large FrameMaker book that I've generated pdfs from a million times. We cleaned up our logo, so I dropped it in and tried to generate the usual pdf. a gray box resulted for the logo only. all other artwork displayed fine. i tried scaling down the logo, changing formats, changing import methods, etc. all failed. however, generating a pdf from the book if I remove a few chapters gives me my logo. Am I running out of resources? I'm using tech comm suite 1.3 on vista. There are no clues in the acrobat log. show large images is turned on in the adobe reader.
I used the obvious workaround: generated two pdfs, one with just the logo page and one with the rest of the book, then combined them. But this process is not practical long term. Any clues?

    A couple questions:
What format is the new logo file?
Given that it works with some component files, but not in the book... I'd guess that it may be a resource issue. How much RAM and free space do you have?
And when you "dropped it in," does that mean imported into one file by reference, or copied in, or imported into a template that you used to update all files in the book..... or something else? And if it did update multiple files, did you double-check them to make sure the path to the graphic is correct?

  • Gray box around images in PDF and when printing? Why?

    Hi,
I'm using CS5 and I'm getting a gray box around any image embedded in my document.  The box comes if I click on it when a PDF and it prints around them.  I can't seem to figure this one out.  I'm not used to prepping files for print and I'm trying to send this out to someone who needs to print it.
    It's CMYK.
I've tried to flatten transparency using both vector and rasterize.
I've made sure the images are embedded.
    I can't figure this out!!
    Please, help.
    Thanks.

  • Pictures and Scanned images are now gray boxes

I have Adobe Reader XI and it will no longer show images or allow me to scan from my printer.  I have a mac, and have always been able to create pdfs and scan to them until the past few days. My version is up to date. Images in pdfs and the scanned documents now appear as gray boxes.

All  your images are pointing to your Templates folder. I would guess that they are not uploaded to the server.
I don't think that is the ideal place to store your images. Normally, one would have an image folder and images would be there. Also your css is also in your Templates folder, not ideal again.
    IE:
    Your css: <link href="../Templates/style.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
    Your image(s): <a href="../Templates/still_life_1_css.html"><img src="../Templates/still_life_1_thumb.jpg" width="35" height="35" border="0" /></a> <a href="../Templates/still_life_2_css.html"><img src="../Templates/still_life_2_thumb.jpg" width="35" height="35" border="0" /></a>
Usually when they are greyed out, then could be a broken link.

  • Gray box visible before SWF loads

My site is live at  brucebever.com
when you go to my site, you'll see a welcome screen.  When you click on the business card or the enter button a gray box, the same size as my flash file (720x720px) is visible in the moment before the flash file finishes loading.
    http://brucebever.com/MainIndex.html#id=Bruce%20Bever%20Photography%20-%20Main%20Page%20Im age&num=0
    Two notes:
    1.  I have gone back into Slideshow Pro and re-exported the project with the correct html background chosen (white), but  still I get the gray box.
    2.  When putting the newly exported slideshow into DW, I did it through the finder, just replacing all the old files with new ones of the same name...  with one exception.  I'm leaving the index file so I don't have to re-create it manually.  SOOO, this leads me to believe theres something in the index file that's tripping me up.
Is there a line of code I can change to make that box white?  I've tried changing practiacally every line of color-related code in the index.
Any other suggestions if that's not the fix?
    Thanks

    Thanks for the quick reply!
In my index file, I went to the Properties tab at the bottom of the screen, 'Wmode' is set to transparent for the flash item.  So i did a search for the words but nothing came up for 'window' or 'opaque', unless I changed the Wmode to one of those choices.  Incidentally, I tried all three choices in Safari after emptying the cache, and there was no change.
Checked the param.xml file, the pop.html file, and both js files (swffit and swfobject).  I found one piece of code in the swfobject file that used the word window as a value (0=window) which I changed with seemingly no effect... so I changed it back.
I'm sure you can't see all the code just by visiting my site, so if there's something you want to look at, just let me know.
