One single PDF taking up space continuously upon editing

Hi, not sure if anyone has encountered this. I have one large PDF file that is 1.2 gb big. It's a textbook pdf so hence the size. It was functioning well until I started reading it on my macbook air preview and using preview to highlight and to annotate within the PDF itself. I know preview periodically save different versions of it as I edit this large PDF file; however, I notice my disk space shrinking considerably more and more as I continue to highlight and annotate on this file (I know I have well over 50 gb of space before I started doing this highlighting and annotation). My disk space just shrunk to dangerously low levels this morning. I managed to transfer some of my other files to an external drive and manage to get back 25 Gb of space right away. Since then all I have been doing is reading this PDF and highlighting and annotating, and my disk space just shrunk to only 8 gb once again. Please help!
I bought my macbook air late last year brand new and had upgraded it to 512 gb of disk space. I have never had an issue with disk space until I started annotating and highlight this huge PDF file. How can I reclaim my space????!!

Wow, thanks so much. I managed to reclaim a whopping 20 GBs of space just by doing that!
Just a follow up question, this PDF from which I reclaimed 20 GBs of space is actually a backup copy of the original PDF that I have. The original PDF is of course equally huge in file size, and that is the one I initially started highlighting and annotating on. However, a couple of days ago, somehow preview didn't save my edits correctly and corrupted my file and since then I have not been able to open this corrupted PDF file at all (Preview, adobe pro, skim...none of them can open this file anymore). I tried those commericial PDF repair softwares and none of them could fix it and hence I had to restore and use a backup copy of it.
I suspect that there's another 20-30Gbs of space sucked in via the version feature that is attributed to this corrupted original PDF. However, since I can't open it, I can't use the above method to delete all previous versions of it. Any thoughts in terms of how I can reclaim the spaces occupied by the versions of this corrupted original PDF file? Does deleting this corrupted file automatically delete all the previous versions of it?

I'm trying to save a very large PDF file. I'm using Adobe Acrobat X Pro. There are about 200 plus pages and I'm trying to save merged PDF files as one single PDF document. I've compressed the PDF's as much as I could prior to saving. For some reason, the process of saving it as a single file takes a long time and usually doesn't work. Will a higher version of Adobe be faster? I was told that Adobe X is a 32 bit program and that could be why it's running slow. I'm unfamiliar with how it all works so I'm hoping someone could offer a simple explanation as to why this is happening and a solution on how to make something as simple as saving a document, go faster.

Best to keep the replies in the other post, but I wanted to comment on something you said "I was told that Adobe X is a 32 bit program and that could be why it's running slow." Yes, it's a 32 bit program. No, it's complete nonsense to say that 32 bit programs run slow. There seems to be a general belief that 64 bit is better because, well, because, um, because it's a bigger number so it must be, right? Sorry, I'm not mocking you, but there is such nonsense about this, that I think software makers are having to put a lot of effort into making 64 bit software for no good reason at all.

Combine bmp files into one single pdf?

I've got 76 scanned pages in bmp format, and need to print them. Ideas? I can't be bothered to select each one of them separately in Preview and click on Print, then OK 76 times...

There are some Apple Script Folder Action scripts that will convert image files from one format to another, so you can drop a set of images into a folder and they will all get individually converted to another file format. I don't know if you can create a multi-page pdf bundle, unless you have PostScipt maybe, then you can just append all the ps files into one large multi-page PS file.
Even working with Automator you will have to learn a little about scripting anyway. Typing text commands in Terminal isn't that much different. Fink is really not that hard to install and work with. You do have to learn a little about Terminal and how to execute comands from the shell prompt.
I think the solution to your problem would probably involve a combination of an Apple Script that executes a Terminal command to run the ImageMagick convert utility, and I think that it could be attached as a Folder Action to operate on a group of files when you drop them into it. I am not sure if Apple Script or Automator can do this work all by itself. They are really just fancy GUI wrappers for the instructions to other programs to do what they do. By themselves they don't actually do the work, they facilitate the flow of the work to the appropriate tools. ImageMagick is one such appropriate tool for your image conversion problem.
I have been thinking about setting this up to handle faxing out a multi-page pdf document that is created by scanning single pages as individual jpg images. Sometimes I have to fill out a form and fax it somewhere, and my scanner is a single sheet scanner. So that would be handy to drag and drop a few pages of jpgs to a folder and have the convert utility bundle them to a pdf and have Preview open it, ready for faxing. Now, I use Terminal to
cd ~/Desktop (or folder that contains my scanned jpgs)
convert *.jpg fax_file.pdf
open -a Preview fax_file.pdf
Then in Preview Print... and Fax
I could fax right from the command line also, but I like being able to look at the document first to check for errors, and get the fax number from Address Book.
I'll post back if I ever get an Apple Script/Folder Action working, but I am in the middle of upgrading to Tiger and backing a lot of files up, so I might not get to work on it for a while.
Try out fink, there are lots of free software tools that you might find useful.

One Smartform - Multiple PERNRs - Output is Single PDF

Scenario:
100 Employees receive Appraisals.
Out of which -
50 receive Bonus
30 receive Variable Pay
20 receive Other Incentives
The Forms for Bonus / variable pay and other incentives are different.
Smartform 1: Bonus
Smartform 2: Variable Pay
Smartform 3: Other Incentives
The output that i need is when the Form Generation Program is executed, i should be able to club into one Single PDF File for each
a. 50 PERNRs who receive bonuses with Smartform 1;
b. 30 Variable Pay PERNRs with Smartform 2; and
c. 20 Other Incentive PERNRs with Smartform 3.
Currently, when the Form Gen. program is executed, it is creating one smartform for one PERNR....thereby, creating 100 PDF files.....

Merging numbers documents into single PDF for emailing

I have 23-50 numbers documents (invoices) that I want to send as one single PDF (to save time).
When I select them all in Finder and open in Preview they are not full size and are rotated the wrong way.
When I open them seperately in Numbers and cmd P they show up fine covering the whole A4 paper and are rotated correctly.
Is there any way of sending multiple Numbers files as one PDF, or separate PDFs without having to open each one and Cmd P > PDF and drag/drop into Mail??
Trying to save time, as we have 23-50 of these every week to do!
We don't want to save them as PDFs as we create the documents as this takes up space on the computer - and there's loads of them!

Hi again mm,
Use a master document in Numbers to temporarily hold copies of each invoice, each on a separate Sheet.
As you complete each invoice, copy that table and then go to the temporary master document. Add a new Sheet and delete the default table that appears. Paste the new invoice. If the invoice has formulas, Menu > Edit > Paste Formula Results (because in Numbers, the formulas will not link back to the original document).
When you are ready to email this master document, Menu > File > Print... and in Print Preview panel on the right > Print All Sheets:
Click on the Print... button (it won't print yet). Bottom left of the print dialogue choose Save As PDF
That is the PDF for you to email and then delete. *
I tried this with an "invoice" on each of two Sheets. Not tried with 23-50 invoices .

Can't combine InDesign files to single PDF file

I'm using Windows XP, Acrobat 8 Professional, InDesign (CS3). Here is the problem: When trying to combine three InDesign files into one single PDF file with Acrobat 8, I get an error message saying something about expecting PDF default presents but get 'Standard'. I've gone into the InDesign files and set the presets to another setting but still get the same message. Quite confused as to how to fix this. Does anyone know, or is there another way of creating a single PDF of three separate Indesign files??

Try exporting the files from within InDesign as PDF and them combine them in Acrobat.

Combine printjobs to a single pdf

We use Acrobat X Pro and would like to use the "Adobe PDF"-printer for all usual printjobs out of Word/Excel and so on.
That is no problem.
But furthermore we would like to combine several printjobs out of our ERP-Software to one single PDF.
Within our ERP-Software we can define:
a) Paperformat, landscape, 55 mm x 30 mm
b) specific-Printer for that issue
And our ERP then starts to do one or even more separate printjobs onto that specified printer with the specified papersizes.
How can we setup the printer settings, that:
a) all single printjobs will be combined/merged together
b) the "summary-pdf" will be saved under a specific name in a specific folder automatically, when the printjobs are finished
Is it possible to use parameters with printjobs to handle those tasks?

The Adobe PDF printer has no capabilities to combine or append.
However, using information in the Acrobat SDK, a programmer can predefine the print file in advance of a single print. A programmer can also use Acrobat to combine PDFs, again using SDK information.

Portfolio to single pdf with attachments

I am trying to combine a portfolio pdf (that contains 1500 pages of emails plus attachments) into ONE single pdf in chronological order of the emails. I can sort it in chronological order in the portfolio. However when I "combine files into a single PDF" it will only sort the files in alpha order according to the file name. HELP!

Open each Portfolio attached file. Save each so that you have individual files. Use Acrobat to combine the files. Use the Pages panel to manually reposition pages as desired or hire a developer to create a script to do this.
Basically you "cann't get there from here" with your Portfolio. Portfolio PDFs are PDFs with a special UI that uses Flash. All the other files are simply attached.

You can start the playlist playing in the iPod app and then switch into the Photos app and start your (non-music) slideshow - as you've found out you can currently only select a single track in the Photos app. Whether that will change in iOS 5 I don't know, but you could try leaving feedback for Apple : http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

in regards to doing it yourself, of course.
but this is a pure java library that can do what you want without you having to re-invent the wheel (for a price of course).
they have excellent technical support as well, usually solving your problem within a day or so.

OK....I'm stumped. The message you are seeing is typically there to protect someone from syncing with a different computer/iTunes account. Is there any way anyone else has used your iPad and possibly connected it to their computer?

One of my toolbars is complete black and taking up space.

there is a blank black space between my toolbars that extends from one side of the screen to the other. It has a white 'leggo' looking shape in the middle of the bar but the rest is blank. I click on it and nothing happens. I want it removed as it's annoying and taking away space from my screen working area. It showed up when I installed Mozilla Firefox.

Issues with a black (empty) toolbar can be caused by a plugin or an extension that is not compatible with Firefox 3.6 and isn't working properly anymore.<br />
