One smart playlist is being discriminated!

Hello,
I have an issue that would like to share, maybe someone has come across it before.
I have a few smart playlists in my iTunes. One of them is simply "album rating=****", no other conditionals. All the smart playlists are correctly synced, except for this one (that shows blank on my iphone). Stranger still, during sync (which on iOS5 mantains the iphone operational) I am able to see the playlist on the iphone, even play it, but in the moment the sync is completed the playlist goes suddenly blank and music stops.
Has anybody seen this before?

I am having a similar problem. All of my playlists sync correctly to iPhone except for one of the smart playlists. A playlist with the same name appears on my iPhone but it has totally different songs in it, songs which don't even fit the smart playlist's criteria. What's even stranger is that when I click the blue triangle next to iPhone on the iTunes library pane, and look at the playlist there, it shows the correct songs that should have synced. It seems iTunes thinks its syncing the correct playlist but iPhone is just showing random music.
Mike I haven't tried duplicating the playlist to see what happens.
Any advice please let me know....

  • One smart playlist displays wrong songs on iphone 5 since ios7 / itunes 11.1.4.62

About a month ago I updated my iPhone 5 to ios7 and this week I updated my iTunes to 11.1.4.62.
Yesterday I noticed that one of my playlists I haven’t listened to on my iPhone in a long time was not working properly at all. It is a smart playlist that I’ve used successfully for a long time and it is syncing correctly to my 4th Gen iPod Touch (ios 6), which makes me think the problem is with the iPhone/ ios7. On the phone, it did not contain the correct songs and most of the tracks had a little “cloud” symbol next to them; they would not play, but I was invited to “download” them, which I did not attempt as I was not on wifi at the time.
This morning I have spent some time experimenting to get that playlist with the correct songs to sync from iTunes on my laptop to the iPhone without success. In between the changes (below) I have executed
    Basic re-sync
Powering the phone off and on
    Closing and re-opening iTunes
The changes I’ve tried have included
Unticking the playlist, syncing the iPhone to remove the playlist from the phone, re-ticking the playlist and re-syncing the phone (the contents of the playlist were still wrong on the phone despite appearing correctly in iTunes, both in iTunes’s own version of the playlist and how the phone’s version of the playlist displayed in iTunes whilst connected)
Deleting the playlist in iTunes, repeating above steps having recreated the smart playlist in iTunes before the resync.
I have only been able to get the songs I want in a playlist on the iPhone by creating a new playlist that is not smart from the contents of the smart playlist, then unticking the smart playlist and ticking/syncing the new unsmart playlist instead. Other smart playlists are syncing fine. Please note that my iPhone has over 6500 tracks on it, so completely removing and resyncing the entire lot would not be an option I’d want to look at. I cannot see that the random songs populating the problem playlist on the iphone have anything in common – they are a mix of purchased music and tracks from CDs. All are in my iTunes on my laptop – I don’t have any music stored solely in the cloud.
I have checked all my settings both on the phone and in iTunes, including those for iCloud and cannot see that I have set up anything that would be causing this. Can anyone help please?

  • Can one create a smart playlist for multiple podcasts and to...

Can one create a smart playlist for multiple podcasts and to play one after the other on your iPod? I want to combine podcasts of the same topic in a smart playlist. When I tried to do this I chose smart playlist, album starts with, and then did it again for each podcast I wanted. That didn't work. If it can be done how do you do it?
I have a fifth generation iPod which is always updated to the latest as well as the itunes.

Say for example I want to put different car related podcasts in one smart playlist. Car related podcasts such as Wall Street Journal Car Cast and NPR Car Talk. Can it be done and if so how?

  • ITunes Podcasts & Smart Playlists Question

    Hi everyone,
Thanks for taking the time to read my question.
I have a 60gb Colour iPod and have nearly filled it, so do not want to sync any of the podcasts to it. I've disabled Podcast syncing in the options tab after connecting the iPod, but Podcasts are still syncing because I have a large range of Smart Playlists which are set to show me what I added by date. This means they are treating Podcast content as being "Added On" a certain date and hence appearing in the Smart Playlist and being synced.
It is my understanding that to disable this I have to add a clause to the Smart Playlist which says "Kind, Is Not, Podcast" - is this the case? To go through every playlist I have would take ages and can anyone advise if it's possible to apply the same criteria to all playlists? I tried to select more than one by holding down Control or Shift but it didn't work.
Any thoughts would be very gratefully received!
    Cheers,
    Edd

  • Some unchecked smart playlists syncing

    Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated!
My iTunes is set to sync only selected playlists with my iPhone. While all of my checked playlists sync, so do some of the unchecked playlists as well. The only unchecked playlists that sync are smart playlists. Also, not all of the contents of the unchecked playlists sync. For example, one smart playlist has over 1,000 tracks on iTunes but that playlist on the iPhone only contains 11 tracks.
I thought perhaps if a track was contained in a checked playlist and present in an unchecked playlist, iTunes was forcing the appearance of the other playlists on the iPhone. While I still think there's a connection, spot checks show tracks which exist in checked playlists appear in other unchecked playlists which are not present on iPhone.
Running iTunes 8.0.2 on the Mac, 1st gen iPhone version 2.2 (5G77)

i've been having the same problem with my iphone/itunes. i erased what i had and re-loaded, tried manual sync, etc. to no avail.
    here's something i noticed:
i have a smart playlist called "jazz". it's unchecked for iphone syncing purposes. however, i have a "coltrane" smart list that IS checked. for whatever reason, the unchecked jazz list is prompted to show up on my phone, but only with songs that appear on other, checked playlists. so the miles davis songs that belong under the jazz list don't appear on my phone, because they're not synced up on another playlist. it doesn't appear like the songs themselves are being doubled; just the playlist(s) they're on.
but still...doesn't make sense the way it looks.

  • The 10.4 upgrade smart playlist editing has removed the ellipse as the 3rd button option along side the adding or removing a parameter. Why? And can we get it back?

I just did the iTunes update to 10.4 (80) from 10.3 on a MacPro OS X 10.6.8 . I am extremely nervous and saddened by a subtle change to the smart playlist editing features. I have 178.26gb of music, and a very extensive array of playlists and smart playlists taking full advantage of all the wonderful features and complexity someone has taken the time to develop. I have taken years of time developing my library, and this one little change will set me back substantially. The change? Removing the ellipse as the 3rd button option along side the adding or removing a parameter. The button allowed one to  create levels or groups of parameters within the dialogue window that could act independently within one smart playlist. For example, songs from artist "A" needs at least 2 stars to be included, while songs from artist "B" need three stars, and they both can be in the same smart playlist which has its first level of complexity. I have lists that go dozens of layers beyond. And dozens more that cross reference. Is there any way we can get the hierarchy back, ie. Reintroduce the ellipse button? Or is there something new I do not know about? Thanks!

I would like to second this.
This subtle yet life-changing removal is a total loss for advanced users that (used to) take full advantage of "logical and hierarchical" playlists. It tremendously impairs the "smartness" of the feature, effectively removing the possibility of mixing "and" & "if" parameters—which was the real beauty of the whole concept of "smart playlists" à la iTunes.
Here's a simple example. I would like to create a playlist combining two genres (rock and electronic) with only songs that have a rating higher than 3. I cannot do that anymore. I need to create two playlists:
a first playlist (A) that displays [Rock] OR [Electronic] (note that this playlist will never be played, it's an intermediary step required for B)
then a second playlist (B) that displays [songs from playlist "A"] AND [with a rating higher than 3].
It's a pain. And it clutters up browsing lists on my iPad/iPhone a lot.
Smart playlists should get the ellipse button back!
Moreover, the possibility of creating / editing smart playlists on iOS via a nice menu would be just… awesome. I would have thought Apple was going in that "smart" direction with iTunes. In hoping it's just a delay… until iOS 5 maybe?

  • Smart playlist not sorted correctly on ipod

I have a smart playlist in my iTunes 10.0, which contains all podcasts (with play count 0), sorted by release date.
Unfortunately, this playlist is NOT sorted correctly on my ipod (nano, 5th generation). After syncing with itunes, the ipod playlist has some apparently random order (not by release date, not even by name, artist or anything, it really seems random).
It's strange that, if I click on my ipod under "DEVICES" in itunes and click the playlist there, the correct order is shown (by release date). But again, on the ipod it is actually not sorted.
    Message was edited by: powerbookuser99

I have a smart playlist for my podcast's and I normally sort them by the date added (oldest to newest) or by release date. No mater what I do now they only show up on my iPhone in date added order newest to oldest and I am unable to re-order them. I have a number of other playlists that work fine it is just this one smart playlist that is acting up. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Another question about smart playlists

    Hi,
I have been experimenting a lot with smart playlists lately and have 3 now that I have set up with help from this forum so far. However, I have a question I don't see an obvious answer to. That is, I have every song in at least one playlist, and some songs are in multiple playlists. I can add a playlist to a rule, but how can I tell ITunes to create a playlist containing songs that are in more than one playlist? For example, I want ITunes to create a playlist from songs that are in more than one of the following playlists, top 25 most played, purchased, and tagged. How can I set up ITunes to do this?

The checkmark on the right side when you're editing smart playlists adds more rules. Make as many rules as there are playlist that you're looking into and make each rule say "playlist _is_ (fill in the playlist from the dropdown." If you want songs that appear in ALL the selected playlists you select match ALL of the rules at the top. If you want songs that appear in any of the playlists you've selected you have to select match ANY rule at the top. If you have three playlists and you're looking for any songs that appear on any two of the playlists, but they don't necessarily have to appear on all three, then unfortunately there's no way to do that with one smart playlist. You'd have to make a smart playlist with one saying playlist top 25 most played+purchased (match ALL) another saying with playlist top 25 most played+tagged (match ALL), another saying playlists purchased+tagged(match ALL). Then you could make a 4th smart playlists saying to add the other three playlists and you'd end up with one playlist that has only songs that appear in ANY of the other three.
Note: there's an option that appears to make subrules as if you could do the above all in one playlist but unfortunately these don't actually work the way they appear they should in my experience.

  • Smart playlist discrepency with iOS7

I found a weired discrepency when I sync one smart playlist on my iOS7 iPhone 5.
A smart playlist is like this,
    - Last Skipped is not in the last of (10) (days).
    - Limit (100) among (Mostly played)
What happen is every songs synced but only few songs are in the playlist in iPhone. In my iTune, all 100 songs are in the list with no issue.
I analyze what the problem is, and found out that
    - iTunes for Windows count songs that don't have a value of Last Skipped, which means "never skipped".
    - Music App in iOS doesn't count songs that don't have Last Skipped, which is WRONG
For example, I have 100 songs in the playlist, and if only 5 songs have been skipped before, there will be only 5 songs in the playlist, but other 95 songs are also copied to iPhone.
Anyone has a similar issue or can reproduct it? It should be fixed.

You won't like the answer, but if using the iCloud, your system doens't work anymore. I spent a lot of hours on the phone with apple support and basically, here is the fix...
Go into your smart playlist, remove the check mark on "live updating" and the problem will stop.
Here's the crappy part. That means when you rate something, it will not remove from your playlist until you sync to your itunes database and manually update the list again. Basically, smart playlists are broken. I don't know when this happened, but I used to do exactly what you did and now it doesn't work.
Wish I had a better answer for you. I am also disapointed.

  • Smart playlists - help!

Hi Everyone I have a few smart playlist questions. This is a bit long so bear with me.
    1. Lets say there is an artist Joe Smith. Joe used to record as Joey Smith. Joe also recorded a Christmas album. How do I create a playlist that includes Joe, Joey, no Christmas songs and with that cridera use the option play songs not played in 1 day?
    2. My next question which is somewhat similar - can I do the above with two or more artist on one smart playlist?
    3. With the above two questions, tHe only option I could think of was to create various smart playlists and a third one merging both together. Now if I do that will that cause problems? For example if I say on each playlist play songs that haven't been played in 1 day, then I do the same thing on the third playlist will that cause "wires to cross" and I'll end up with nothing in the playlist?
    4. Last but not least... is there a way to just add one particular song to a smart playlist? I could not figure out how to do it. I could only find albums.
It seems like when I say match all criteria with these questions I can solve one issue another one arrises. Any help would be appreciated. I am new to using smart playlists, ipods in general (just bought mine a few months ago) and am somewhat lost in the process. Thanks for your help, Christina

    1. You have to use multiple playlists like you mentione in your #3. This is becuase smart playlists can "match all" or "match any", but can't use "match x OR y".
    Genre is not Holiday
Last played is not in the last 1 days
    2. Yes
    3. Not a problem, I've done it....but sometimes I make mistakes and have to tweak the various playlists.
    4. Name is what iTunes uses for track name.

  • 3.1.3 update and smart playlist problem

All the songs in the smart playlist are updated to the iphone, the playlist is shown where the iphone is listed under devices, but it is not listed under playlists on the phone. I've done a restore and sync (not from backup), edited the playlist and resync, deleted/recreated the smart playlist and resync. I've unchecked all playlists except just the one smart playlist and it just won't get the playlist name.

I have just run into same issue after installing the 3.1.3 update. Multiple smart playlists no longer sync to the iphone 3G, with the exception of one. Beyond that, my issue is exactly as bredmond's original post.

  • Smart Playlists - Match any/all of the following rules.

    Hi.
    I am using OSX 10.4.9 and iTunes 7.1.1 (5)
I am hoping to make a smart playlist that has 24 rules. I am hoping to get iTunes to match ANY of some rules and ALL of others... Like this...
    - Match ANY of the following rules - Applied to 4 of the rules.
    - Match ALL of the following rules - Applied to 20 of the rules.
I hope to do this all in one smart playlist. Anyone know if this is at all possible? Maybe with a script?
I did search with no luck.
    Thanks for any help!

All in one smart playlist? I think not, since Smart Playlists only do AND selections, not OR selections. You need the equivalent of an OR selection for your 4 rules, and this has to be done in a round-about way.
You could get at it with sort of a "compound" playlist. To use a simple example, let's say my objective is to have a playlist that has all my tunes that haven't been played since Jan 1, 2007 and are either Blues or songs performed by Al Green. I actually need two playlists to accomplish this. First I create a smart playlist with two statements: Genre IS NOT Blues AND Artist IS NOT Al Green. Let's call it the "Not Blues or Green" playlist (forgive me, that was not intentional). Now, in the second playlist, I can use the statement, Playlist IS NOT "Not Blues or Green", to specify a set of songs that are either blues or done by Al Green. I combine (join with an AND) that statement with the statement, Last Played IS AFTER 12/31/2006, to create the second playlist that gets me to my objective.
For your case, it should also be a two-layer "compound playlist", only with four statements in the first playlist and 21 statements in the second.

  • Wishlist item: nested 'smart' playlists

I can only assume this has been requested time and time again, but I really think apple would truly benefit by creating nested playlists, especially for the smart playlists. I can't imagine the code would be too difficult, and it is consistant with the nested sequence already in the ipod (music/artist/all - artistname/...)
For example, I could have one single 5 star play list, with nested folders specific to certain genres, artists, comments, etc. I could then either listen to all 5 star songs, or all within a specific nested folder.
Also, it would be cool to make the nested play lists by dragging one smart playlist into another. Obvioulsy not all combinations would work, but it would bring up a window saying I was an idiot for trying to drag a 4 star playlist into a 5 star playlist creating a null response.
just a wish, so i dont have to scroll through thirty playlists or so...

    That's normal.
The iPod cannot find playlist A to get songs for playlist B, therefore you get an error.
I believe it will still load the playlist B and give the error but work ok on the iPod.
I simply create a smart playlist (iPod Music) at random with no 1 star songs to fit onto my iPod (3700MB).
Any other smart playlist I want on the the iPod, starts off with Playlist is iPod music and add my othe rcriteria.
Then all the playlist will work fine.

  • Smart Playlists:  One instance of artist per list?

    Hi there,
When I have a smart playlist create a list by my ratings (eg 3+) is there any way I can limit the amount of times an artist is added? I want to try and avoid a playlist dominated by one artist!
Thank you in advance for your help!

Windows doesn't do Applescript, but iTunes for Windows does have a programming interface, which I've used frequently to do various things.
So what the OP wants to do is possible with a script, but I'm too tired to write it right now :-/
Maybe tomorrow... maybe. But note: the playlist the script creates will not be a smart playlist -- it would be an ordinary playlist.

  • One song smart playlist?

How would I make a Smart Playlist that would only show just the tracks that I only own one song off an album ?
I have a lot of "one hit wonder" single songs from bands that I only own one track of. How would I find them?
I don't see how I can make iTunes check the number of tracks on an album.

    Navarro,
You are correct.  This is not possible with iTunes Smart Playlist logic.
To do it manually, add "one hit wonder" to the Comments field of those songs.  You can then create a Smart Playlist to match on Comments contains one hit wonder.
