One song, multiple albums

Hello all, I don't know if this is possible, but here goes.
Over time you accumulate the same track a few times from different sources, and that's all well and good as you want the full album or compilation.
My question is: is it possible to tag one of these tracks for multiple albums, and therefore being able to delete the duplicates, so only the one file is referenced from multiple albums?
Many thanks in advance for any info.

Well, no, it realy isn't possible.
The way iTunes "knows" the track is by some data kept inside the actual file called "ID3" tags. So any single instance of the MP3 file (or AAC, etc) can only have one set of identifying ID3 tags, and thus can only show up in one place in your iTunes library.
If you have the same tune in multiple places in your iTunes library, then those places reflect multiple sets of ID3 tag information, and those must be in separate files.
It didn't/doesn't actually have to be that way: there is no reason the tags couldn't have multiple "title", or "album" or other information, but the demand just isn't high enough for such sophisticated behavior for Apple or any other MP3 player to worry about such details.
And anyway, are you sure they are the same? "Best Of" compilations frequently do some remastering, so even if it has the same length and sounds mostly the same, it might not be precisely the same sets of sounds.
Anyway, the size of a single audio file compared to the size of disks these days really means this would only matter to folks with borderline obsessive/compulsive disorder. Perhaps you should worry about something more meaningful ?
\[Disclosure: the only reason I know this is that the same problem irritates me ]

I noticed yesterday that some of my music has disappeared into the cloud and it shows 9 copies of that one song when I only have one and another entire album is gone except for one song and the rest of the album that disappeared is not in he cloud. How can I get this fixed?? does anyone know why it's doing this? Can I get the album back that has disappeared? Is anyone else having this issue??

  • IPod Touch Download error - One song of album didn't download

I have two more songs also stuck in download limbo... but I recently downloaded the Great Gatsby deluxe album and all but one song downloaded.  I've tried restarting the iPod and the "tap to retry" and it still won't work.
Any suggestions on how to get this song and the other two to fully download?
    Thanks so much!

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Download on computer
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.

  • One song from album classified as a movie (it's just a song)

For unknown reasons, one and only one song off an album of mine recently moved from being a song on the album to being a "movie" which shows up in my movie list.  There is no associated video, it's just a regular song.
I can still play the song from my Album list (though the title is greyed out).  I can also play it from the Movies list.   The file is a .m4p file, but for some reason it moved to the "Movies" subdirectory of the iTunes library.  Moving it back to where it belongs does nothing, I need to get iTunes to recognize that I want to move it, but have no idea how to do so.
    Any tips?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks again, but no joy.
Doing the work only on my computer.  The file is not read-only.
As an experiment, I located the file in the "Movies" subdirectory and physically removed it (there's a copy where it belongs in Music/<artist>/<album>.  Trying to play it then (from the album's song list where it also appears), it couldn't find the file and asked me to locate it.  Once I did, it moved the file to the Movies directory and proceeded to play it.  It still thinks it is a video-less "movie".  Get Info reports the "Media Kind" as "Music" and does not allow me to change it (nor should I since that is correct).
I'm tempted to export the library in it's XML format, see if I can figure out how to fix it and then reconstruct the library from the XML.

  • One song, multiple playlists

If I have one song that appears in four different playlist and the 4 playlists are copies to my iPod, is the song copied four times?

No. The song is just copied once.

  • One song, multiple tags?

In loading all of my CD's into iTunes (and later my iPod), I realized that I have a lot of duplicate songs. For instance, I have two copies of "Eleanor Rigby" because it's on two different albums.
If I delete one of the songs, I can't listen to that particular album in its entirety. I know I could create a playlist for each album, but that's also irritating (since I'd have to go to Playlists as opposed to Albums to listen to a complete album).
Is there a way to tag a song so that it will show up and play under more than one album as opposed to clogging my iPod with multiple copies of songs?

My reply was directed at the OP (Original Poster) and not to you.
At first glance you might have a similar issue, but I don't think it is.
Have a look at all albums/songs belonging to the artist/band Chicago.
Are they all spelled exactly the same?
An invisible 'space' character after the name Chicago can already divide it in two different artists.
This is what I recommend to do:
In iTunes, select all tracks of all albums of 'Chicago' (click the first one, shift-click the last one)
    Get Info
You will see the 'Multiple Song Information' window.
If my assumption is correct, you won't see the artist name.
Type the correct name and click OK
    Hope this helps.

BTW: Your info says, you're using Windows. Although the behaviour of iTunes often is identical for some iTunes features in OS X and Windows, I recommend posting in one of the iTunes for Windows forums in the future.
You will normally get a more to the point answer in those forums.

  • Single song, multiple albums

Say I own the albums Purple by Stone Temple Pilots and the Crow Soundtrack. Both albums have the song Big Empty. How do I get that song to appear on both albums without having duplicates or setting up a whole bunch of playlists? I'm particularly interested in getting the iPod to pick up on this. Thanks.

You get one album per song. So if you want it in both albums, then you need to have it imported into your libary twice. Me, I tend to simply delete duplicates on Best Of or soundtracks if I have them on the original and leave them with the original (so the retain the proper date and such).

  • One song, two albums?

    Hi all,
Just ran out of space on my iPod. Again. I have countless double-ups in my library though:
"Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen" from their compilation album "Absolute Greatest"
"Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen" from their album "A Night At The Opera"
I was wondering if there was a way to "tag" both albums to the one file location thus eliminating my need for 2 files on my iPod.
I realise I could delete the file for the compilation album and ONLY credit A Night At The Opera, but both albums are great to listen to individually and I don't want to have to credit only one album and end up with half a compilation and then have to search to listen to the song. Just as I don't want to have to make individualised playlists as I've seen suggested in other threads (dating back to 2005).
Surely there should be a solution to this issue by now?

I was wondering if there was a way to "tag" both albums to the one file location thus eliminating my need for 2 files on my iPod.
There is not a way.  There is only one Album tag for each song file, and that is the album that iTunes will use.
You can of course, make a second copy of the file, and give the second a different Album tag and cover art.  However, this does not save the space as you are trying to do.

  • Purchased album, one song didn't download...what do I do?

I purchased The Odyssey by Symphony X (by clicking the buy album button) and the entire album downloaded except one song, the album-only, 24 minute long The Odyssey.
Naturally I'm a bit upset. I tried clicking Check for Purchases, and it says I have no more songs to download. iTunes is not currently downloading any songs on that separate page.
I'm posting here because I couldn't find an iTunes support phone number and my experiences using Itunes support email in the past were less than effective. So if anyone could provide me with a phone number, that would be phenomenal.

There is no telephone support for the iTunes Store. Contact the iTunes Store customer support department through the form at the bottom of their Download FAQ web page and explain the problem to them.
    Good luck.

  • Can't gift more than one song at a time

Does anyone know how to gift more than one song at a time (not an album, but non-contiguous songs off one or multiple albums)?
I tried adding them to my wishlist so I could add in several, but I already own several of the songs and you can't add songs you already own.
Of course, this would be resolved if they would just bring back the shopping cart, but for now, I have no idea how to accomplish what should be a very simple task.

It is, indeed, frustrating, and seems short-sighted on Apple's part. Imagine a shop owner saying, "You can buy anything you want for yourself, as many as you like, but if it's a gift, you can only buy one."
I did receive a nice response from Apple confirming that this is, in fact, impossible to accomplish:
    Dear Michael,
Welcome to iTunes Store Customer Support. I am Animesh and I will be assisting you today.
Thank you for your interest in giving an iTunes Store or App Store gift. I understand that you would like to gift multiple songs from different albums. I understand that this is important for you.
Michael, please note that you can buy a song, an album, a video, an audiobook, a TV episode or season, a movie, or an application for anyone who has a valid email address. However, there is no such option to gift multiple songs at a time from different albums. You are required to gift them individually, also the Wishlist feature is for personal usage and not gifting.
I can realize that it must be difficult for you. I have felt the same way in the past when I've found myself in similar circumstances. I have found in situations like this that voicing your opinion is a good way to get the "ball rolling".
Please know that Apple takes the feedback from our customers very seriously. This is the reason for our feedback page - to create a forum where our users can vent, praise or share whatever feelings they have to allow us to meet your needs, and grow as a company.
I took the liberty of submitting your feedback to Apple on your behalf. I would also encourage you to share this link with all of your friends and family who wish to submit the feedback, and have them all submit the same request.
Here is the link for you.

I know sometimes it feels as though submitting feedback will not yield results, so I will also invite you to check out the following link. Mr. Jobs heard our customers and Apple responded accordingly.

  • How do I stop iTunes from breaking out all the songs in one album into multiple albums?

How do I stop iTunes from breaking out all the songs in one album into multiple albums when the artist has many collaborators on the different songs, for example Timbaland?  I want to just listen to the full album with all the songs, instead of having to play every song separately.

  • Show or view multiple album art for one song on iPhone 4?

Is it possible to show or view multiple album artwork for one song on an iPhone 4, especially on the now playing screen? I figured since iTunes has this feature then the iPhone should too. Can I download an app that does this? I've searched but couldn't find any, maybe I'm using other keywords. Could anyone point me in the right direction with this?

Darn. I hope an app is designed to be able to do this soon. From what I've seen this feature isn't really in demand so it could take a while. Thanks for replying.

  • Multiple albums for one song?

Is there any way have a song show up in multiple albums without duplicating the song? I have a lot of these, mostly songs that show up on soundtracks. I want 'Whiter Shade of Pale' to show up on 'Procol Harum' and 'The Big Chill Soundtrack.'

You can always add the other album names to the comments section of the file if it means that much to me.
Personally, I only list the name of the collection (soundtrack, best of, etc.) if it is the only version I have of it. But if I later import the original album, any of those songs that are also on a best of collection (after verifying they are truly the same versions) I delete the Best of or soundtrack version and retain the one with the original information (album name, date, etc.).

  • One song in multiple albums?

I know this has not been possible in earlier versions of iTunes, but I hope Apple has addressed it by now. It makes a great deal of sense. If, for example, one has a song in the album in which it was originally released and also has a copy as part of a Greatest Hits album, we should not have to retain two copies of the song to be able to hear it no matter which album we choose to play. Aperture and iPhoto seem to manage this with images—why not in iTunes? Is it possible to do this yet?
If not yet possible,  could someone remind me of the feedback URL?
    Thanks,
    Ben

    i personally would love this.....
I have all of an artists albums.... PLUS i have all of the singles from that album...
I would love the same track that is on the album, and on the single to show in multiple album titles....
    Eg the song;
Step Back In Time is Track 02 on the Album "Rythm of love"
however it is Track 01 on the single "Step Back In Time - CD 1"
    and also
Track 01 on the Single "Step Back In Time - CD 2"
So i have to choose which album i want this to show on... as i am unable to have the one track show up on multiple albums.....  even tho it is all the same track.......  yet, if i listen to "Step Back In Time - CD 1" it means i cannot listen to the title track as it is linked to a different album......
