One thing I really like on N97

If people following the forums you guys already know how ridiculous is the RAM in this device as well as the c: memory.. But I must say I really like how the internet connections gets handled.. I always like to decide which network the device is connected and I also like to know when it is disconnected.. N97 does all that for me and only thing I did was to enter my home network pass and wireless carrier selection ONLY ONCE.. Now every application seems to know what to do so I never have to choose every single time.. I am really happy with how the connections are handled!

what i like on N97 is how it looks , and i like the OS
but when i first heard about it i really think that it would be the fastest phone nokia ever made ,but i am now dissapointed
so i am thinking of selling my ridicules N78 and buying a new phone(maybe SAMSUNG) or waiting until Nokia fix there N97 or give us a really nice phone,
so Nokia i am waiting...........

If you have only one single thing you don't like about SAP products then you are very lucky.
There are plenty of things that I hate in SAP products, specially with the weird "ergonomy" of a lot of transactions or bugs I know since R/3 release 2.2 and still there in ECC 6.0...
Number one on my "hate list"is presently J2EE logs analysis...
Fortunately, there are also a lot of things that I love in SAP products.
Otherwise, I would not be still working in this area since 11 years.
I am always amazed that the architecture of the abap stack is so old (1992 !) and still up to date and so reliable (especially compared to Java...)

I love iChat... but I have one thing I dont like

I wish iChat was a universal chatting app that allowed you to talk to all .mac, aim, yahoo, and msn messenger people. it never fails, i have to have 3 chat software apps on my computer at all times because i never know what other people will have. can't they make ichat universal to work with all of them... even if you have accounts with each (msn account, yahoo account, .mac account). MAN, it would be nice

Actually, you can use iChat as universal IM chatting programme (text).
All you need to do is to use jabber, get yourself a Jabber ID.
Then, use Jabber's Transporting feature to communicate with MSN, Yahoo! and ICQ users.

One thing I would like, given that my interests range from SQL / APEX / Java / Forms / Designer, is to be able mark forum(s) as favourites and be able go to them from the front page.

Yeahh should be :) , go to your control panel and change e-mail (isn't allowed now however, brings for me some error page indicating it would be corrected asap)
There are 2 possibilities how to change the email
1) if you change it to non-existant email, then in case you forget password you won't be able to recover it, but there isn't other good/bad side effects
2) if you change it to your worst enemie's email you'd spam him, which probably is good idea ;) , however he then could change your password and make some cool posts under your name, which on the other hand could be a bad thing :)
Of course everything in my beautiful scenario breaks up, if OTN Forums would have adapted e-mail verification, don't know, did not need lately to test that :)

Why is firefox twice as slow as IE or chrome? The speedtest is consistent. I really like firefox but the speed thing is annoying.

I have 18 M dsl speed. It is fast. Firefox consistently tests at 8.xx-9.xx M, while IE and Chrome come in at 17.xx-18 M. I have uninstalled firefox, erased all traces of it; loaded a brand new install and tested speed in a clean copy, without any add-ons, bookmarks, etc. The speed was the same...slow. I really LIKE Firefox, and will not give it up, but this speed thing is annoying. Any suggestions? Yes my computer is old, (CPU = 2M), but IE and chrome have no problem.

so can you please tell them to make a New Update for the Tv Shows section?

Change the Show name to something different for each season, e.g. <Show>, Season <X>. Probably best to make the Album name match the show as well.

ITunes 8.1 Can't Seem to do More Than One Thing at a Time

I upgraded to 8.1 and now, rather than a "faster" iTunes experience as was advertised on Apple's website, iTunes can't seem to do more than one thing at a time without locking up the application completely. For instance, when trying to download podcasts if I choose to hit more than one "Get" button at a time iTunes will freeze up until the first podcast has completely downloaded. During this time I cannot access any other screen in iTunes at all.
This freezing of iTunes also occurred while I was trying to sync my iPhone 3G. I received the Calendar sync error that a few other people have mentioned on the forum and wanted to turn off Calendar sync (since I don't use it and don't understand why iTunes turned it on by default, apparently, after the upgrade) but I had to wait for my iPhone 3G to completely sync before I could gain access to any of the tabs in the iPhone sync window.
So, basically it seems like the new version of iTunes (8.1) really doesn't like to be bothered while it is trying to copy data from one place to another.
Any ideas?

I'm using Vista Ultimate 64-bit and iTunes 8.1 installed OK, but required a restart of the entire OS after upgrading. It takes forever to launch, clicking on certain items (like applications) causes itunes to freeze for about 15-30 seconds before it continues (this is actually something that's been there since the introduction of the app store), I've had to switch my library view to LIST and avoid any sort of album art. Using album art to view my library causes iTunes to be extremely, obnoxiously unresponsive.
The best part - plugging in my iPhone to sync it... iTunes simply sits there dumbly - doesn't even recognize that I've plugged my iPhone in. So now I can't even sync. QUALITY product, quality. So the app I'm FORCED to use to manage my phone doesn't even work after upgrading. Outstanding.
I'm terrified of uninstalling and reinstalling... the last time I did that with iTunes it jacked my library up... it "lost" all of my music... basically it disassociated all of the music (even the stuff purchased through the itunes store) with the index file so I had to re-import EVERY song and delete the duplicate entry.
I searched a ton of forums looking for any clues as to how I could improve performance... All I run into is apple fan boys flaming any and all forums to the point of PC *****, no Apple *****, and so forth. Extremely unhelpful.
The fact is this - if I wasn't forced to use iTunes to manage my non-jailbroken iPhone 3G, then I'd dump it completely. It is a horrible app. Why punish the customers that haven't gone the route of "jail breaking" their iPhones?
One individual on one of the forums suggested that blue screens, and all the other random errors, including slow performance were due to a lack of RAM. I have 4GB of RAM on my machine I can run a virtual Fedora core 9 machine and a virtual WinXP machine on my Vista x64 box and still not have any performance issues with those two virtuals in the background sucking up system resources, yet with nothing open and less than 50% of my 4GB of RAM in use iTunes performance is abysmal. I have not run into any other application on my Vista machine that performs as badly as iTunes.
And Apple is touting a "64-bit" version of iTunes - it isn't. The applications the 64-bit installer installs are all 32-bit.
So, I'm searching as the two of you are for an answer to horrible performance of iTunes.
Even exiting out of iTunes takes a day and a half... "saving itunes library".... And my "library" isn't that big.

Record one thing whilst playing another

Audigy 4? and XP?Arggggg,? i have used a turtle beach for so long, i didnt realise that the soundblaster stuff had changed its methodology, and feeds off of microsofts trash so highly (direct show/play)
with the turtle beach i was always able to select a item to record, and did not have to listen to it also, the recording would have audio, as it should, as it was directed to the recording .
with this card, if i select something to RECORD, the PLAYBACK volume must be up or it doesnt record it, and i am not using the "what you hear" stuff.
if you know of any way to fix this , please point me to where i can find out, or discuss it, it would greatly help me.
Here is the situation:
i have a Tv video card, on the computer, and a line output connected to the audigy.
i want to RECORD what is going down that line , and still carry on with other things on the rest of the computer.
like i want to play back a wav file, or a video.
HOW the heck can i record something , without having its volume up, and if i turn the MAIN volume down, how can i hear the other item?
i hate to be pickey or anything, but the sound blaster from 978 could do that, and the turtle beach would do that, and yet i get one of the better $$$? wizz bang high tech newer cards, and it cannot do that?
i think the "feature" was once called "full duplex" meaning you could have a recording and a playback done at the same time, it was a grand feature on 2$ soundblasters in 978 :-)
please tell me what to try to accomplish the task, or which audio card to switch to that will do that.
i CAN indeed put the turtle beach back in the computer, BUT it has the problem of creative Owning EAX, so games not so good :-(.

Here's what you can try. Open the surround mixer software. Make sure Line In(assuming you're using Line In from the soundcard) is selected as the source under the REC section. If you do not want to monitor the recording of Line In, make sure you mute off the Line In volume slider under the Playback section(slider that besides the REC section).

On a Mac, can you navigate menus with one handed key strokes like Windows?

On a Mac, is there anyway to navigate menus with one handed keyboard strokes like you can in Windows? My girlfriend is a graphic designer and switched from Windows to Mac. She misses being able to use the Alt key and make menu selections. On Windows she can press "Alt" and then move through menus and submenus with one hand on the keyboard. When you press "Alt" the first letter of every menu is highlighted. When she presses a certain letter the menu drops down, and the first letter of every submenu is then highlighted. She can then navigate through all the submenus until she hits the selection she wants, all using the left hand on the keyboard. It's very fast and efficient. Can you do something similar to this on a Mac?
The reason she wants to do this is because when she is in Photoshop, she likes to use her right hand on the mouse with the cursor inside the canvas (sketching, moving layers around) while she makes menu commands with the left hand. It is 10 times faster this way than using the mouse for everything. Hot keys are not the same because you must have those memorized. With the "Alt" key function, you can open a drop down menu, see the choices, and make your selection.
I have been a Mac person my whole life, and I have to say, it's a pretty awesome function. I really want the Mac to have something similar.

This is actually very similar to how the keyboard-driven menus work in Mac OS X. I would, however, encourage Derek Doublin1's girlfriend to learn the direct keyboard shortcuts in Photoshop. On Mac or PC, for me pressing Command-Option-I is much faster than either the mouse or using the keyboard to drop the Image menu and walk down to the Image Size command.

I don't really like my iPad. Am I alone?

I have an iPad 64Gb/3G. I like the idea of the iPad and I have been making a big effort to using it a lot for the past 4 weeks, but I just can't seem to get used to it! I try everything: iBooks (a heavy-weight book if you ask me and quite awkward to hold), email (a pain to write), browser (hard to hold it in one hand and use the other hand to 'finger' the screen), music (can't find a reason to use this over my iPhone), games (surely some are interesting). Is it because I have both an iPhone and a MacBook? I just find it easier to use the latter for pretty much everything. Am I alone? I am not complaining about the product, but I was hoping I would grow to really really like it, but it's not happening.....sad really.

I like my iPad 3G, but have some gripes, too.
1) I dread typing on the thing. I find it excruciatingly slow to make even a short forum post like this.
2) I wish we had multitasking already. Can't wait till Fall.
3) don't care for files getting isolated in a particular app's environment. I have PDFs spread out in at least three different apps.
4) my hand is not steady enough to easily do selections for copy and paste.
5) And yes it does get heavy holding in one hand for extended sessions.
Still I like it and use it. Hope the next model is lighter and has easier methods of input.
