One Windows on Mac Solution

Although I have seen some fast well performing Windows XP, and Win 7 in work environments, I never had much luck on my personal machines, probably at least in part because I have been using older Dell laptops, one nearly ten years old, and the other about 5; also I tended to load them up with a lot of stuff. All this was one reason I switched to a Apple MBP this spring, refurbished 2012 w/Retina, 750Gig SSD. I could not be more satisfied with the Mac's performance.
But, I still have some odd ball s/w built for Windows, like WBS Chart Pro, Copernus search tools, and some land scaping tools, so I still need access to Windows from time to time. I have explored a lot of options, including Cross-Over, VMWare, BootCamp with separate Windows partition, all with various problems, speed, display on my large Thunderbird second monitor, and some older Windows app just not running. I finally tried Parallels and found it meets all of my wishes, especially the Coherance view choice. It is amazing and I think truly demonstrates some great software engineering reaching down to manipulate at the OS I/O and driver level. I seem to have full access to a vitrual Windows 7 64 bit machine, yet seamlessly integrated into my Mac desktop display, with seamless working with both, and sharing folders and running apps from either the resident OSX or virtual Win machine. Looks like for me, the Parallels is the solution.
Paralles recommended I keep the earlier BootCamp Windows install for failure-recovery, otherwise if I had started with Parallels initially, I might not have bothered with the Boot Camp partition. I will probably not boot to it all now with Parallels. I hope my satisfaction is not premature, but for now Parallels looks great.
Costs:
Win7 64bit Pro   ~ $135 at Best Buy
Parallels              ~$70
About $200 bucks, much better than a separate Windows box, and so far the Windows environment is as fast as in OSX and displays are exactly the same. I get keep and still use all my Windows Ware

Do you have any unknown devices in Windows Device Manager? Are the BC drivers installed?

I'm sorry I just saw the last post. I had two users on my hard drive, one for me and one for my daughter, but I am not sure what you mean by partioning my external????? I have heard the term before, but don't know how to do it. I am having serious crashing issues with this computer and believe I really need to do a clean install. I just want to make sure everything for both ipods is safe (is???? I think so, everything is......I hate when the English language does this to me!)

Using vitual machine programs (VirtualBox, Parallels, VMWare Fusion) you can run both at the same time.
Load Windows under BootCamp.  Then load the VM software and select the existing BootCamp partition as the "virtualized space".
But ... BootCamp first, following Csound1's advice about backups.  And you will wantto boost RAM most likely because you need to allocate certain amount of system RAM to each "virtual machine", as well as leaving some for OSX.
    But ... BootCamp first.

  • Can I access both platforms, window and mac with one cloud account

can I access both platforms, window and mac with one cloud account

    Yes.
    One Cloud membership = 2 software activations: Win/Win or Mac/Mac or Win/Mac.

"Are there any unique benefits that come with my paid membership?
Yes, as a member of Creative Cloud, you get many benefits that you do not get when you purchase a traditional shrinkwrapped product:
Access to both the Mac OS and Windows® versions of the desktop applications and the ability to install them on your primary computer and one backup computer. So, if you have a Mac at home and a PC at work, you can install your applications on both as long as they are not running at the same time. Open your Displays system preferences.  Is there an Arrangement tab and does it show two screens?  If no Arrangement tab then your mac does not know it has two screens.  Maybe smc and pram reset will shake it free and maybe not.  Maybe there's something wrong with the connection.  Thunderbolt plugs are similar to mini-displayport plugs so make sure the plug is pushed firmly in so that essentially all the metal part disappears inside the socket.  The plugs can be a little tricky in that you need to make sure the plug is fully seated in their socket.
If you do see two screens in the Arrangement tab then click Detect Displays and Gather Windows to get the Displays preferences of the other monitor on to your main monitor.  Check the resolution and if there is a refresh rate check that as well.

I am so glad to hear about your success. As you are new to the Mac environment, I will be glad to help you more.
You said: "I can't change the setup yet but i have access". I don't understand what you mean about changing the setup! Please let me know more about that.
I also recommend to use Boot Camp, which allows you to install windows on a partition of your internal hard drive. This has many benefits. First, you can restart your computer and start up in windows. This makes your Mac device a complete windows machine and you gain the most from your hardware when working in Windows. Second, if a problem occures to your Mac OS X, you can restart your machine in Windows and prevent your data from getting lost. Third, you can import the Windows installed on the boot camp partition in to the Mac OS X using VMWare Fusion and work with it as a virtual machine. In this situation, VMWare enables you to work directly with your Windows in the boot camp partition. So it does not create a file package for the virtual machine in OS X.
Regarding the data safety and reliablity, I strongly recommend using Time Machine. You can also set it up to back up your virtual machines or not. This is possible to set up in the Virtual Machine Preferences Page in VMWare Fusion, or in the Time Machine preferences page in the System Preferences app of OS X.
Please don't hesitate to ask any other question. I will be glad to help you.

I've managed to go some time like this, but right now it's just really annoying me. HELP!!!

Just drag the small window to the top right below the toolbar, you'll see the area highlighted and when you drop it the file should dock.

  • Silent print a PDF from a web page using Flex. We are targeting Windows and Mac with Arcobat reader installed

We are planning to Silent print a PDF from a web page using Flex. We are targeting Windows and Mac with Arcobat reader installed. I have tried using the AIR appliaction and it worked, But our requirement is NO INSTALL to the user machine for the silent printing. It is just from web page and silent printing to the default printer to the desktop/Laptop. Can anyone share your thoughts and experience with us. It will be very helpful..
For AIR : I tried the thread Re: AIR and PDF showing/silent printing

    Hey CodeMonkey & Ross,
Did you either of you ever find a solution? I'm stuck too, it seems I can get remote printing on all these PDFs to work but it just prints a blank page since I've been using Javascript in the browser, not Adobe's (they are Engineering drawings that I do not have permission to edit so I can't just insert code into them but I need to make work instructions). I've been scouring the internet for hours now, it seems that this thread is the only relevant/useful one at this point. No one else was trying to achieve this for similar reasons to mine.
    Thanks guys,
    Lox

  • ITunes 9 - Using 'Home Sharing' between Windows and Mac libraries

I have my main iTunes music library stored on my Windows 7 PC. It is currently around 200Gb in size, so pretty large.
I want to be able to use 'Home Sharing' in iTunes 9 to access this library on my Macbook over my home wireless network.
I don't, however, want to copy the music files themselves over to this laptop, but simply access the library over the network, and play them via either iTunes 9 or Front Row.
I would appear that the Windows and Mac 'iTunes Library' xml files are incompatible. I can't 'Alias' the Windows library on the MacBook for this reason. Does 'Home Sharing' eliminate this problem? Is there a way of accessing the library on the Windows PC without copying all of the files over to the MacBook?
I want to maintain a single library (which is often changing with new podcasts etc), rather than 2 libraries which I have to keep in sync.
Does anybody have any ideas on this one? I'm sure I am not alone in having this problem.
    Here's hoping...:)

  • Online backup for Windows and Mac

Is there an online backup service that works with Windows and Mac and lets you use the same login? Meaning, one service, one service to pay and same login? Also, the service shouldn't bill by each desktop (as Mozy does) but instead by overall space needed.
I currently use one service for Windows and another for Mac. I'd like to consolidate everything.

That's always the risk, it's what happened to MediaMax (though in their case it was technical incompetence). They've been around for at least a year, but I can't offer any guarantees, obviously.
the MobileMe idisk might be a possible solution but it's not brilliant with Windows.

  • Encoding for Premiere in Windows from Mac FCP

    Hi,
I'm a Final Cut Pro user.  I have a client who sent us a drive with the complaint that "they can't read or copy the files" onto their Windows computer with Premiere CS6 installed.  The problem as I see it is twofold:  one, it's a Mac-formatted drive; and two, the files are Quicktime ProRes and XDCam-EX videos.  These came from a third-party shooter, BTW.
I'm trying to find an easy solution that will let me return the drive to the client as something they can plug in and work with.  I figure I'll pull the files off, reformat the drive as NTFS, and dump back.  Here's the thing:  I understand that it's possible to edit in ProRes and in XDCam-EX in Premiere, in Windows...but I have little confidence that the client will be able to figure out how to do it.  I can convert these files  - just need to know what to convert to, to make it easy.  They are 1080i at 29.97 fps.   What's a good format that lets a Premiere user basically plug-and-edit...?  Or am I off-base, and it will be easy for my client to grab and use these files?
    Any help appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Jesse

To easily move HDDs between Windows and Mac, use ExFat instead of NTFS.  It's supported by both OSs and can use large files (unlike FAT32).
Installing the ProRes codec (read only) on Windows is trivial.  Install Quicktime and you are done.  However, lots ofpeople here will pour scorn on using *anything* encoded in a Quicktime wrapper because it's (currently) a 32 bit platform so is perhaps not running as fast as the native 64 bit codecs.
Personally, I use ProRes quite happily on both Windows and Mac.    Another alternative is Avid's DNxHD (free download for both Mac & Windows).
