OneStep DVD cuts end off of my video
Hi, I'm trying to dub some copies of a 45min video I did with iMovie. I'm using iDVD OneStep. I've used it before and had no complications, but this time it cuts off just before the end of the video. I checked my video to see if I had in some way left a space that might have indicated the video was done, but I hadn't. And my master tape from my camera plays exactly as I have produced it. Any ideas? I would appreciate any input. Thanks, Kate
Okay, first: Nope, there are no chapter markers at all. If I put in a chapter marker it would be about 30 mins in to separate the video from the video slideshow.
Next: Oops, I looked at the wrong video. Just the video-no menu or any thing is 5gigs. I just added that to show I had at least twice the space on my hard drive as the video...
I used AIC because thats what was suggested in iMovie '08 & iDVD, The Missing Manual. I've only been using a Mac for about 6 months and this is my first video, hence the book. I can try the other format though and see if that works.
That is correct, the entire movie processes correctly and the only thing getting cut off is the final rolling credits screen. I set the credits to music so its a couple mins long. The video plays all the credits except the final 60 second scrolling credit-just a white box. However, the final frame of the movie/credits, which does not scroll, shows up on the screen just fine.
Okay, here's something too: I tried the export using QT again-and made sure no other programs were running. I checked the video BEFORE I imported to iDVD and it has the same problem. So perhaps I should repost this in iMovie instead? If I should, sorry for the hassle.

Text too wide for paper, cuts end off
I frequently find that some text in forums etc is in sentences too long for the normal paper when printed, and as a result the last few words are cut off. Often reducing print size works, but makes it harder to read. I haven't been able to find any way to make it fit the page, or is that not possible? Changing to landscape helps, but not always.
any suggestions ?

That page loads normally for me in Safari 3.1.1. Not to say that it it might not have a problem in some setups, different browsers, etc....
Edit: Ah, yes, in Firefox that thread really is very wide, isn't it. And it actually is caused by a long URL, the "http://www.newegg.com..." link in one of R. Berardi's posts, which wraps to three lines in my Safari but doesn't wrap in Firefox. It seems that Safari and Firefox have different line-wrapping behavior, where Safari will wrap some text after certain characters but Firefox will not.

Onestep dvd great video, no sound
Hi,
I made a dvd using onestep dvd from my minidv. The video came out great, nice and clear looks awesome. The problem is there is no sound. Tried it twice on two separate days with same results. Anyone no why this is happening. The process seems simple enough I just don't know why the sound wont come through. Any help will be great.
Aloha, SeanHi Sean
Your original material from ? miniDV tape Camera or ?
iDVD
Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
• Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
• Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
• Program miss-match: iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
• Program miss-match: iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
• Program miss-match: iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
• iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
iDVD pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
and is named: com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
Now restart iDVD.

I just used a firewire plug to connect my digital camcorder (set to VCR) to my MacBook, inserted a blank DVD, clicked on "OneStep DVD". Nada.
What gives?Hi pceary,
welcome to macbook forum.
First, check if your macbook detect and able to communicate with your camcorder, by opening iMovie, and switch the button from scissor icon to camcorder icon, and if it is connected and you can import the movie, then those two are communicate each other.
Second try again within this sequence:
+To use OneStep DVD, connect your digital video camera to your computer using a FireWire cable. Then turn on your camera and make sure it's in VCR mode.+
+Click OK and insert a blank disc. OneStep DVD rewinds the tape, imports your video, and burns it to a DVD.+
Good Luck. -

IDVD Won't Record Video In OneStep DVD
I connected my Sony DV camera to my MacBook Pro using a FireWire cable, I switched the camera to VTR mode, I opened iDVD and clicked on OneStep DVD, I inserted a recordable DVD, it rewinds the tape for me and then says that it's capturing the video, the tape plays for about 3 or 4 seconds and then this message pops up:
"Nothing Captured: No video has been captured. Aborting OneStep DVD creation."
WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?????Hi
May be my list offer any help ?
*NO CAMERA or A/D-box*
Cable
• Sure that You use the FireWire - USB will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin FW one ?
• Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
Camera
• Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
• Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
• Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
Connections
• Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
Mac
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
(Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
SoftWare
• Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
• Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
• FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
Using WHAT versions ? .
• Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
• QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
• iMovie 8 (7.1.?) ?
• iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
*Other ways to import Your miniDV tape*
• Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
• If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE Mac OS Extended formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

in addition to Bengt's excellent '9 yards of advice' ..
camera set to 'Play' , not rec/computer/etc.?
camera not on battery, but power-line?
did your Mac 'recognize' this camera before...?
a technical check.
connect camera, on, playback, fw-connected...
click on the Blue Apple, upper left of your screen ..
choose 'About../More..
under Firewire.. what do you read..?
More
• FileVault - Secure that it’s turned off
• Network storage - DOESN’T WORK
• Where did You store/capture/import Your project ?
External USB hard disk = Bad Choise / FireWire = Good
If so it has to be Mac OS Extended formatted
----> UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange is NOT Working for VIDEO !

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

IDVD cuts sides off imported PAL DV file when burnt to DVD
Hi,
I have been struggling to solve a problem with burning a DVD over the last few days. I have created a slideshow in a programme called Photo to Movie and have then exported the movie as a .MOV file at 720 x 576 resolution (PAL DV) into iDVD. All goes well, and I then add an introduction and burn it to DVD. When it has finished, I view the DVD in my IMac and it appears fine. But when I go to use it in a DVD player (I have tried several, with several different televisions) it cuts about a centimeter off the sides and top (so it doesn't show the whole photo). But it only cuts this off the imported movie, not off the introduction that I created in iDVD. Obviously I have tried changing the tv setting to 4:3, smart, widescreen, etc. It still has the image appearing cut off.
My settings in iDVD are video mode set to PAL, Aspect Ratio set to Widescreen (I have also tried setting it to 4:3 and it does the same thing after the DVD is burnt and shown on a television), Best Quality.
So I really don't have a clue what to do now. I mean, if the file has exported ok as a Quicktime MOV and is the correct size for PAL DV (720 x 576) when inserted into iDVD then there should be no problems, I would have thought. Also, it appears ok on a computer.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm pulling my hair out here (and I don't have a lot left to pull out). Thanks in advance for your help.

I am making a graduation video for my cousin using Final Cut Pro. I have photos layered over videos, and I was wanted to find out how you can add a border around the photos so they stand off of the video. Anyone know what I could do?
You would need an image editor to edit the images and add a border to the image first before importing them into Final Cut.
Cheapest and very good image editor?

Using OneStep DVD with a HDD Camera
I am a relatively new mac user (4 months) but i've navigated my way around pretty well and have used all the ilife software as well as final cut express and some other things with much delight. But I have a wife and have a 1 year old baby. The wife is intelligent but would rather not spend time editing video etc.. but would rather take our files directly off the camera and burn them to dvd.. So i noticed the onestep dvd process which would be perfect if we had a firewire type camera.. But we don't. We also don't have firewire on our new macbook. Hence the reason we bought a HDD camera that does AVCHD. Just wondering if anyone knows if iDVD could use a HDD camera with a quick process such as OneStep DVD.
thanks
SteveToo late to edit my reply so I'll add this here .....
The only way I can think of to accomplish your wife's objective is with a FW minidv camcorder (example pictured below) and a Dvd Recorder with a FW input like this one (Daewoo DVR07):
The advantage in this is that all is done in real time (as opposed to waiting for iDvd to capture and encode a one step dvd) and includes a basic menu and interval chapters if you wish (not to mention the ability to record in sessions as opposed to write at once only thru iDvd).
Btw ... iDvd's One Step can actually take longer than using the traditional approach of iMovie => iDvd (just so you are aware).
Hope this helps but if not just come on back. -
Onestep dvd help - only copying one section
I've successfully used onestep idvd to burn a disc from our camcorder. I put the 2nd dv tape in the camcorder, brought up onestep and first it gave me an error message (sorry, can't remember it) and then said it was aborting the process. Tried it again and it only copied the 1st section of my video, it stopped copying at the point where i turned the camera off and then back on again at a later time...the point where the blue screen comes up between footage. How do i tell onestep dvd to copy all the dv tape?
Thanksit stopped copying at the point where i turned the camera off and then back on again at a later time...the point where the blue screen comes up between footage. How do i tell onestep dvd to copy all the dv tape?
OneStep is looking for breaks to stop copying, and your break is too big. No way I know of to get OneStep to "skip" the timecode break. I suggest you import into iMovie, and then use OneStep like this:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/6.0/en/424.html
or just use iMovie>iDVD normally........ -
Onestep DVD in folders, not file
Thanks in advance for any help. I have been trying unsuccessfully to get my movies from Final Cut Express or iMovie into a format that is decoded accurately on a Windows machine. I read that iDVD automatically converts to an mpeg-2, so I used Onestep DVD to create a DVD that showed great on my Windows computer. However, what I thought would be a single file like (movie.mpg) is rather a video and an audio folder; and since I need to copy this into another program that runs at my kiosk, is impossible to use. Is there anyway I can get this same quality into a single file? Neither Final Cut Express nor iMovie allow you to create mpeg-2's, and I've tried every other format to no avail. Thanks again. Also, if I need to go to another forum, please let me know.
I contacted Apple Care today, and there was a resolution for this in iMovie, though not in iDVD. Basically, there is a way to convert an iMovie project to an H.263 file. If you are interested in how to do this, please follow my thread under Final Cut Express, topic "Convert to mpeg-2" http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8164350#8164350

Just installed iLife5 for the first time, so I don't really know the program yet but I tried making a DVD using the OneStep DVD. The video portion seems to be fine but there is no audio at all.
I'm also wondering if there is a way to choose the name the disc is given.
Thanks for any help
12" Power Book Mac OS X (10.4.3)To change the name of the DVD go to Project in the menu. Then Project Info. Change the name of the DVD on the first line next to Disk Name. That should change the name of the DVD.

The OneStep DVD from Movie file works fine for my 4:3 movies -- but I can't seem to figure out how to get my 16:9 movies to come out letterboxed when viewed on a standard screen. Is there some setting I can change to give me the results I need? I don't want or need anything more than a simple video that loops -- no theme, menu, etc -- so I haven't wanted to create a 'project'.
Any help is greatly appreciated!I found the solution to my problem of burning a letterboxed SD 16:9 movie with iDVD on another forum and it worked like a charm! Details below:
Name: Christopher S. Johnson
Date: Nov 18, 2006 at 8:26:34 pm
Subject: Re: 16:9 and idvd 6
I'm not sure why but iDVD doesnt see the anamorphic flag on SD anamorphic QT movies. It WILL behave properly for HD QT files though.
This is the "Christopher S. Johnsnon" work around:
Open your anamorphic SD QT movie in QT player Pro.
Press Command-J
Highlight the Video settings in the list
Select Visual Settings in the tabs
UN-check Preserve Aspect Ratio
Change the width from 720 to 854
Hit Return and
Save the movie
Now bring it back into iDVD and you are good to go!!!

IDvd - Onestep dvd from movie, not working?
I am trying to make a onestep dvd from movie - from an avi file... but every time I make one (I followed all the directions perfectly). It looks like it is burning and takes about 4 hrs. but nothing happens. it just says I have inserted a blank dvd. Why does this keep happening?
Hi
from an avi file
.avi is not the food for iDVD - it usually can not handle it at all.
.avi - is no codec but a container - so one must use another program to figure out what codec that's in there.
Then convert it to sometrhing iDVD can use.
My UN-Structured/sorted notes up till Yet ! (May be MANY Faulth ! be careful)
AVCHD
• need of Intel Mac and iMovie’08 or 09 or 11
• can be converted to AIC via Voltaic
Containers.
.mov.
.avi.
You can use MPEG-Streamclip to convert some of the AVI files so that QuickTime can play them
and then to streamingDV for iMovie.
True file formats (?).
.asf (from QuickTimeKirk)
Your product is based on Windows OS and the .asf files are designed for Windows Media Player.
Microsoft discontinued Mac support for Windows Media Player in 2003.
iv50 - old codec on window platform.
• Open on a PC-Window with Microsoft Movie Maker.
• Put into TimeLine
• Save on ”this Computer” as .wmv
move over to Mac and open with QuickTime Pro and save as StreamingDV
(if Flip4Mac is payed then no Waterstamp and time limit)
or
Open in FinalCut Pro as is = No Waterstamp or time limit.
Flip4Mac -- //flip4mac.com
is third party software that "plays" most WMP formats via QuickTime Player. They also sell upgrades that allow conversion from WMP to QuickTime formats.
These upgrades are supported in iMovie version 6 but not for version 7 or 8 (iLife '08 and '09).
So. What to do?
Purchase one of the Flip4Mac upgrades.
Copy the files from the SD card to your Mac and convert to QuickTime formats (DV Stream would work best).
Import the new .dv file into iMovie (any version).
.dv
streaming DV imports directly it is the same as from miniDV (tape) Camera
.wmv
iMovie is by concept meant to work with miniDV camcorders . . any other 'imports' need a conversion or are not supported... a quick solution would be purchasing a plug-in from www.flip4mac.com, 49$, which allows the conversion of .wmv (a PC format) into something useful for iM (dv-stream) ...
or, ask the emailer to send it in some other codec .. mpg4 for example .. which will be converted by iM 'out-of-the-box' ... and, to work with iM, the video should fulfill a few standards .. 720x480 pixel resolution, 30 frames per second ... otherwise, you will experience a dramatic loss of quality ..
.mp4
container not to be mistaken for .mpeg4 which is a codec - and it’s most often could contain a H.264 encoded material (PS3 and AppleTV)
.m4v
found in iMovie project folders - imported into iDVD without any problems
.mov
found in iMovie project folders - imported into iDVD without any problems
.ram real-movie by Real-player download
Both Real Networks (.RM, .RA, and .RAM video files) and Microsoft (.ASF, .WMA, and .WMV video files) makes it VERY difficult to import footage encoded with these formats. Especially on a Mac.
.mpg
.mpeg
.vob
.vro
.m2v
.m2a
.m2s
.mts
.m2ts
.swf files are Flash files. You need Perian
.flv Awkward timing in your choice of software as QuickTime 7.4 has dropped support (we hope it is temporary) for Flash Video formats (.swf or .flv file extensions).

From Mac to PC - convert to .avi or .wmv
• Transport problem and 2?Gb limit on DOS/UNIX formatted hard disks - You need a
hard disk formatted on a PC in NTFS format
FAT 16 has a 2 or 4Gb file size limit
FAT 32 should be able to handle larger ones
• Rather copy back to miniDV tape (Camera) and use this
QuickTimeKirk. You don't format the drive using a Mac.
Use the PC to format using NTFS and avoid FAT 16 or FAT 32.
//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Movie_Maker
Yep. They want DV-AVI as the format. Same thing but in an AVI container.
Export from iMovie to AVI (Expert Settings) and click the "Options" button to set DV as the codec.

Trouble burning with OneStep DVD
I've been archiving a number of my Digital hi-8 tapes onto DVD using OneStep DVD with no problems until recently. The last few hi-8 tapes I want to archive onto DVD do not start immediately so OneStep seems to think there is no information on the tape and will not burn a DVD. I get an error message as follows: "Nothing Captured. No video has been captured. Aborting OneStep DVD creation."
I've been trying to figure out a way to "trick" OneStep DVD into not rewinding the tape on my camera all the way so it will start when the video actually begins on the tape but I can't figure out how to make it work because it keeps rewinding regardless. I have too many tapes to create actual DVD projects so OneStep is the way for me to go at this point. Does anyone know how to get around this problem?Hi Len;
I actually tried this approach but, for some reason, I get an "out of memory" message when I take this route. It's worked fine (with other movies of the same type) when I am able to burn straight to DVD but gives me grief when I try to burn the very same movie from iMovie. Any other suggestions?
Thanks!
