Online Backup of supported Linux VM on Hyper-V 2012 R2 / SC DPM 2012 R2

Hi,
I'm trying to set up a lab environment:
Win 2012 R2 with Hyper-V
running 2 Linux Machines:
Linux2 - CentOS 6.4 with manually installed Linux Integration services 3.4
Linux3 - CentOS 6.4 without LIS (should be already included in CentOS)
Another machine running Win 2012 R2 Server with SC DPM 2012 R2
but both VMs show as "Offline" when trying to back them up via DPM. Tried local Windows Server Backup with the same result.
I am able to backup the VMs "offline" (pausing the VM, taking snapshot, resume VM) but according to MS, SC DPM 2012 R2 should be able to do Online backups for supported Linux VMs (http://blogs.technet.com/b/virtualization/archive/2013/07/24/enabling-linux-support-on-windows-server-2012-r2-hyper-v.aspx)
The only things in the EventLog are these:
A storage device in 'Linux3' loaded but has a different version from the server.  Server version 6.0  Client version 4.2 (Virtual machine ID 4F5CDDD8-B855-41CF-83B2-772C1B99090D). The device will work, but this is an unsupported configuration.
This means that technical support will not be provided until this problem is resolved. To fix this problem, upgrade the integration services. To upgrade, connect to the virtual machine and select Insert Integration Services Setup Disk from the Action menu.
Any Ideas ?
Thanks

Hi,
That list would need to come from the Windows hyper-v group, they are responsible with adding the feature to the integration components for various Linux OSes.  DPM just backs up whatever the hyper-V writer presents to us, if the guest supports
online, we back it up online, if not hyper-V saves the guest before the VSS snapshot is taken and DPM takes the backup from the saved state.
NEW NOTE ADDED 1-29-14: Windows group just released “Linux Integration Services Version 3.5 for Hyper-V”. The
document mentions that some versions of Red Hat and CentOS are now
supported to do online backup.
Live virtual machine backup support
======================
RHEL/CentOS 6.0-6.3
RHEL/CentOS 5.7-5.8
RHEL/CentOS 5.5-5.6
ADDTL NOTES: If there are open file handles during a live virtual machine backup operation, the backed-up virtual hard disks (VHDs) might have to undergo a file system consistency check (fsck) when restored.
Live backup operations can fail silently if the virtual machine has an attached iSCSI device or a physical disk that is directly attached to a virtual machine (“pass-through disk”).

  • How to backup Hyper-V host server on DPM 2012 R2

    Hi,
I'm about to backup my first Hyper-V host server using DPM 2012.  I'm looking for a strategy to back up both the host server and virtual machines.  Note:  I'm not really interested in backing up all the virtual machines.  Many are non-production
or for testing.  How do you do it?  I was thinking about selecting in the protection group:
    - BMR and SS for the Hyper-V host
    - The C: volume of the Hyper-V host
    - Select the Child partition snapshots of the virtual machines I want to backup.
In my environment, Hyper-V role is installed on the C: drive, but the virtual machines are stored on E:, which I would not backup directly (volumes) since I'm backing up the VMs using Child partition snapshot.
Would I be able to restore my Hyper-V host and the selected VMs with a backup like this?
Anyone want to share how they setup their protection groups for Hyper-V?
    Thanks.

No, use full server backup (image) if VM config are stored at default storage (disk  C).
Understanding where your virtual machine files are [Hyper-V]
Using this method to perform a full server backup is the recommended method because it captures more data than the other method.

  • Online Backup Database in Linux

I try to use command "alter tablespace system begin backup ; " to back the datafile
but it show me the message "cannot start online backup; media recovery not enabled".
What should I do for that.
    thanks

Sounds to me like you are not in Archivelog mode. You can not do HOT backups if you haven't put that database in this mode. I believe you must be in MOUNT state to do this. You will also want to add some lines in your init.ora so that it knows where to write the archive logs and it starts up the process at startup.

  • Saved State Backup on Server 2012 R2 and DPM 2012

Hello, Our environment in currently in transition with planned migration to 2012 R2. In the mean time, we have a 5 node 2008 R2 hyper-v cluster with CSV.  We are currently using DPM 2012 for our backup.  I have read multiple postings about child
partition backup and saved state and all that seems to make relative sense.
What I have noticed is that in our existing environment (2008 R2 Hyper-v, DPM 2012) that all 2012 R2 Virtual servers setup in our hyper-v cluster show 'Backup Using Saved State'.  All virtual 2003 - 2008 R2 servers on the same cluster show as 'Backup
    using Child Partition Snapshot'.
So, the question: is this normal and the only way virtual 2012 R2 servers can be backed up in our environment? Or, is there some configuration on the virtual 2012 R2 servers that needs to be done so that the Hyper-v VSS writers show that it can be backed
up using Child Partition Snapshot. (Yes, I viewed the Hyper-V VSS Writer Caption: for each system on all the nodes and no, I am not talking about what is displayed in DPM 2012 since I understand it may not truly reflect the current backup method)

Have you already checked typical reason for DPM doing saved state backup? If not, find them below.
    Also, do your VM have
SCSI controller added? Prior to using Veeam as our primary backup solution, we leveraged DPM and confronted the very same issue. Fortunately, by adding ISCSI controllers to VMs in question we were able to solve the problem.
Conditions when DPM fails to back up Hyper-V virtual machines in an online state
By default, System Center 2012 – Data Protection Manager (DPM) performs a backup of a Hyper-V Virtual Machine (VM) in an online state. However, DPM cannot back up a Hyper-V VM in an online state, if one or more of the following
    conditions are true:
Backup (Volume Snapshot) Integration Service is disabled or not installed.
The virtual machine has one or more dynamic disks.
The virtual machine has one or more non-NTFS based volumes.
The virtual machine Cluster Resource Group in a cluster setup is offline.
The virtual machine is not in a running state.
A ShadowStorage assignment of a volume inside the virtual machine is explicitly set to a different volume other than itself.
An App-V drive is installed on the virtual machine that creates a non-NTFS volume.
These conditions are set by the Hyper-V writer. In such a case, the VM is put in a saved state before a snapshot of host volumes are taken (except when the VM is turned off) for a backup. The Hyper-V writer adds the VM in the following format:
For offline backups: Backup Using Saved State\<VMName>
For online backups: Backup Using Child Partition Snapshot\<VMName>
Additional reason if we have less than 300MB free space on a volume in the guest.
    Kind regards, Leonardo.

  • Does DPM 2012 R2 with rollup 2 support any version of Windows Server 2003/2008 on Hyper-V?

We have Hyper-V Hosts with VMs which include Windows 2003/2003R2/2008/2008R2.
If I we upgrade to DPM 2012 R2 Update Rollup 2, will we be able to backup all those VMs now?   The support matrix (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj860400.aspx)
still seems to show what is supported by the initial release of DPM 2012 R2, not an updated version for the rollup.
We currently use DPM 2012 SP1 and Hyper-V hosts using Server 2012.

    Hi,
This is kind of a loaded question because DPM 2012 R2 never dropped support for protecting Windows 2003/2008 using host level backup.
However, the support matrix will be updated shortly to include the added support for protecting workloads on Windows 2003 / 2008 using DPM 2012 R2 UR2.

  • DPM 2012 R2 Crashes after upgrade - Tape Backup

    Hello guys,
    I have recently upgraded from DPM 2012 SP1 to DPM 2012 R2 Rollup 3 on Windows 2012 R2 (in-place upgrade)
The basic procedure was to backup the DB, uninstall DPM, install DPM 2012 R2, restore the DB.  re-sync all the inconsistent replicas and upgrade server agents. When it comes to the offsite tape backup for whatever reason every time the tape backup
commences it fails instantly with the below error and reports "Backup to Tape Failed"
"Event Log shows MSDPM Error ID 945"
It appears to be failing due to a missing stored procedure 'dbo.prc_SMTE_ComputeDailyTrend'.  The stored procedure does not exist on other DPM servers.  I'm guessing this is something hanging around in the DB from prior to the upgrade but I can't
seem to track it down.  Does anyone have any ideas upon how to resolve the issue?
The description for Event ID 945 from source MSDPM cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.
The following information was included with the event:
Unable to connect to the DPM database because of a general database failure.  Make sure that SQL Server is running and that it is configured correctly.

  • Installing DPM 2012 SP1 onto Server 2012 R2 (Compatible / Supported)?

    Hi,
Can DPM 2012 SP1 be installed onto Server 2012 R2? i.e. is it compatible and also is it supported by Microsoft?
If so are there any official documents or links provided by Microsoft for this installation scenario?
I would have installed DPM 2012 R2 onto Server 2012 R2 but this is not possible due to DPM 2012 R2 not supporting Server 2008 protected servers!

    <P>
With iCS2.x, the admin utilities provide `csbackup` command to backup
individual calendar or the whole calendar database. Solstice/Legato

how can i online backup my Sqlite dataBase from memory to disk?

You will need to remove the internal storage from that 2010-11 MBA, and put it in an external USB3 enclosure for use with a 2014 MBA. The assumption here is that the logic board failure did not corrupt the internal storage contents.

  • Online Backup and Sharing issue

I am having trouble with the restore part of my Online Backup and Sharing.  Whether I select specific files or a folder, the history shows that the backup was successful, but when I try to find it in the list of files that can be restored, the files that I want are not there.
I can see the structure of folders and sub-folders, but the specific files are not anywhere in my restore list.
Also, there seems to be two different structures with some of my folders in one and some in another with some redundancy.  Neither is complete.
Is there a way that I can wipe what is in my online storage completely clean and start over?

There is a specialized team who troubleshoots issues with the backup and sharing program.
A dedicated internal phone number (866-770-6800) has been provided for hand-offs to the VOL Backup & Sharing Technician.
Hours of Operation are Mon - Sat 7am - 11pm EST.
After hours the customer will be asked to leave a message and someone from VOBS support will return their call during business hours.

  • Online Backup Application - Not Displaying Properly

I have installed the Online Backup program (4.0) and, when started, the main window has no scroll bars and cannot be resized.  Yet you see content, such as backup scheduling, continues further down the page.  You can't get to the rest of the window due to the lack of a scroll bar.  OS is Windows 7.  Any idea of how to fix?  Should I reinstall?  Is there a newer version than 4.0?
    Thanks.

I had the identical problem and after going through the frustration of calling Verizon Support and selecting endless menu options I finally got the Internet Support group - who DO NOT provide support for the Online backup - the whole thing is outsourced and they tranferred me to the support section of the developers of the program. Here is the fix, You must have your Font Size DPI set for 96 DPI, if you have it set to 120 DPI you will not be abel to see the entire window!  The support tech said the program developers made the window non-resizeable and assumed everyone used the default 96 DPI!  He also said they know of the problem and that it may be fixed one day. It surely didn't sound like fixing it was much of a priority though.  But setting your font to 96 DPI does fix the problem.

  • Online Backups Rman

    HI,
I have setup an oracle database running one of our inhouse applications on a Linux Red Hat 4 Enterprise OS. Project go live
is a few days away and I don't have time to teach myself Oracle backups at this stage. I was hoping a few experts could
help me out with the following.
    1. What configuration settings do I make to Oracle database and RMAN to prepare for online backups? How do I check
that the settings have already been done?
    2. what commands do I then run to trigger off a online backup and what script type do you use so it can be scheduled?
    3. How do you schedule the online backup?
My plan its to do an online backup to a folder on another partiton and then use rsync to sync the backup over to another
    server which has tape backup.
I also though of running a script to shutdown the databse, then use rsync to copy the databse to a new location and then
startup the database again. Anyone ever use this backup type?
    Many Thanks!
    Raikal.

    Hi 581156,
You can use RMAN to do your online backups, please can you tell us your RDBMS version,OS and if the DB is on archive mode or not? I need this to send you the right links to help you on this process.

  • Online backup client eats CPU!

I have an online backup client from Mozy installed on my Mac Mini, and the actual backup process is scheduled to run daily at 23:00. The automatic backup is switched off. However, the backup client process is running at all times, and sometimes takes 50 - 60% of the CPU even when the scheduled daily backup is not being taken. This is not always momentary, and seems to continue for minutes, not just a few seconds. As you may imagine, this has a serious effect on the performance of the machine and is very frustrating.
An additional problem is that it seems impossible to stop the process from the Activity Monitor. It can be force quit, but restarts almost immediately. Repeating the force quit does not seem to help.
I have referred this to Mozy support several times, but they appear unable to resolve the issue. This is unfortunate, as the backup itself is useful, and works well. I am therefore wondering if there is anything that I can do within OS X to bring this process under control? I was thinking of possibly setting up a cron job to start and stop the backup client process?
Any thoughts and suggestions would be of interest and gratefully received!
    Nigel

    Thanks for that.
Unfortunately, it seems my thinking was not quite the best idea, as I have now received the following advice from Mozy Support:-
"I spoke with on of our senior support agents about the idea of quiting the Mozy client when not needed and he told me if you were to do that, Mozy wont know when files are changed and so wont back them up when you run a backup. Even when you aren't running a backup the Mozy client is watching all of the files on the machine and noting when a file needs to be backed up.
If you like, however, I can still provide you with the commands to effectively quit the Mozy backup daemon and launch it on demand. Alternatively, if the older Mozy client was better on resources and works for you, by all means use that version instead. To avoid having to re-select all of your files while changing the Mozy client version, when you select Uninstall from the MozyHome icon in the menubar, make sure the checkbox for Keep settings and log files is checked.
I know the Mozy Mac engineers are working towards reducing the resource footprint as much as possible, but Mozy is first committed to provide the most advanced and feature rich products. As such there will be a performance degradation as subsequent versions are released and ran on legacy hardware."
So switching the daemon off is clearly not a good idea; and the implication of the other comment is that Mozy don't care how much processor their system uses. Having researched elsewhere, it seems that this problem has been identified a couple of years ago, and Mozy don't seem to have made any serious effort to resolve it. From my perspective, I just want a reliable backup, the other bells and whistles are not interesting, and I would have thought that other users of a budget product would have similar requirements. However, Mozy seem content to leave us out in the cold. Fortunately, there are now other similar products, and a recent review in Macworld identified one called CrashPlan which seems to offer similar prices to Mozy (or slightly less).
For the time being I have reinstated an old version of Mozy that did not give this trouble, but will be looking seriously at CrashPlan, as reviews seem quite favourable.
