Online backups on BIW systems, every update is logged?

Some years ago I was at an SAP BIW installation, they performed Oracle online backups dayly.
For some reason, they had to restore and recover DB, and after using an online backup as a restore basis, some indexes were not usable, because they had been updated without archive log information.
Finally, the easiest way for the system administator was using an offline backup.
I got to know there were some updates (not critical) not being logged in the DB, so online backups, as well as standby DB would not be as useful as on OLTP systems.
Does somebody know if this is or this is not the same nowadays? Is everything logged on a BW system? Is that a tunable configuration for some indexes? Is an online backup really useful after restoring and recovering?
Thanks very much for your experience and answers !!
Eva

Hello Eva,
> For some reason, they had to restore and recover DB, and after using an online backup as a restore basis, some indexes were not usable, because they had been updated without archive log information.
This behaviour is absolutely normal.
In a BW system the indexes are created / rebuild with the NOLOGGING clause, because of some performance reasons.
> Finally, the easiest way for the system administator was using an offline backup.
The easiest yes - but concurrently the worst one. He can identify the "new" indexes since the last online backup and only recreate this ones.
> Does somebody know if this is or this is not the same nowadays?
Yes the NOLOGGING clause is still used nowadays.
> Is everything logged on a BW system? Is that a tunable configuration for some indexes?
You can "deactivate" the NOLOGGING clause.. but then you can have some performance impacts in your BW load processes.
Check sapnote #442763 for the customizing.
> Is an online backup really useful after restoring and recovering?
Yes, of course .. the ONLINE backup is the preferred method.
If you recover your database with the BR*Tools .. your unusable indexes are automatically rebuild.
Check sapnote #849485 for that feature.

  • Stop CIF queues always during online Backup on SCM system

    Hello,
On Upgrade Guide "SAP SCM 5.1 ABAP UNIX Oracle Version 1.00" under
chapter 3.4 --> Backup before prepare JAVA we found this :
"Before performing a database backup, you have to stop the CIF queues in your
SAP SCM system in order to ensure a consistent recovery state."
Is this relevant for every online backups (also outside from Upgrading)?
Should we stop the CIF queues on daily online backups too? Or is this a special-feature during Upgrade?

    Hello,
Do you have above said log file available ?
Instead of the option 'Overflow log path', did you try rollforward with the option of timestamp (point in time) (till the time you have the log files) Or with the option overflow log path but with 'NORETRIEVE' as well ?
For the query status command, Last committed transaction time stamp is not what you thought.
    Please revise the command options,
    http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/db2luw/v8/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.db2.udb.doc/core/r0001978.htm
'It is looking for log file S0000XXX.LOG whose time stamp is older than the time stamp of online backup.'
If you want to restore only until the online backup, then use the option End of Backup and stop - to rollforward until the last log when backup was in progress
    Thanks

  • Online Backup / Sharing Tool will not let me log in

I am trying to set up the online backup and sharing, using the downloaded software for a Mac running OS 10.7.3.  I have installed, activated, etc, etc, etc.  HOWEVER, the desktop tool will not accept any combination of ID and password, including the Primary Account ID and password under which online backup and sharing was purchased.  I have re-downloaded, re-installed, and re-started multiple times, and continue to get "invalid user name or password".
What is the trick I'm missing here?  Which ID and Password does this beaties want?
    MJ
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

After chasing through online chats and two phone calls, the answer is: the download software doesn't work with OS 10.7 -- would have been nice to know that up front.  Their plans to upgrade to support 10.7 are 'some time this year'.

  • Actions to be performed after a online backup restore

    Hello Guru's,
I have an online backup of a system.
    (AIX - ORACLE)
If I restore the backup using Tivoli Storage Manager I still have to perform some actions to recover the database.
I have read through the SAP documentation and it seems I can restore the logs using brtools (brrecover).
My questions actually is, which option do I have to take if I want to apply the offline archive logs as far as possible ?
"Complete database recovery" of "database point in time recovery" ?
I want to make sure that only the archivelogs are being applied and that the database restore is not peformed again.
    Thank you all !
    bye
    BUD

    Hello Hans,
    > and it seems I can restore the logs using brtools (brrecover).
If you only want to restore your archivelogs, then use brrestore.
brrecover is for recovering the database, not for restoring.
    Take a look at here:
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/88/cadaca94734ae5b8ea3491f615741b/content.htm
    and here:
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/0d/d3077b4a0c11d182b80000e829fbfe/content.htm
    > My questions actually is, which option do I have to take if I want to apply the offline archive logs as far as possible ?
    > "Complete database recovery" of "database point in time recovery" ?
In this case you have to do an incomplete database recovery or in other words called "point in time recovery". For the difference between these two restore types take a look at the oracle documentation:
    http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14192/intro004.htm#i1016863
After you have restored your archive logs you can perform the recovery manually:
    > SQL> recover database using backup controlfile until cancel;
    > SQL> cancel;
    > SQL> alter database open resetlogs;
Btw.as you are using TDP for SAP you can use backfm to restore only some several files.

  • Whether to take Offline (or) Online backup

    Hi
I am planning to apply support pack 14 now I am in SP13 before applying SP14 I am planning to take Database backup.
What is recommended whether to take Offline or Online backup,
Can any one explain which the best way to take backup is.

    Hi,
Taking a successful backup is must(suggested)  before Support pack implementation.
However online/offiline anything will be ok.
As online backup is taken to minimise the downtime for SAP application.
If you can get a downtime you can go for offline backup..
Say if you can not get downtime then go for online backup.Given you are running in archive log mode.During this performance will be little degraded.that is why suggested to run online backup in off -peak hours
You can go for a online backup before night(starting of SP implementation) and before starting the support packs do a log switch and then do a archive backup and make a note of that log number and start the SP implementation.
In case of problems when you have to restore the backup restore the backup and recover until the log number which we generated just before the SP implementation...
    Thanks.

Every time i connect my iphone to itunes and trying to do a backup or get the new update it says i have to restore my iphone. and then that doesnt work, i tried to reinstall itunes but it doesnt work. i get this all the time. fix it please.

iTunes states " There's a problem with your Iphone, please contact apple service center " Also i took my iphone to a local service man and he told me the IMEI code has been corrupted and there's nothing that can be done about it. Please help, if you have any solution.

  • How can I figure out what my password is and keep it unlocked?  Every time I do a system update, it requires the password and sends me into cyber trouble with the remember my keychain access, requiring it every time I log in.  A real hassle to be avoided

How can I find out what my password on the computer is?  I had to change it due to my teenagers helping themselves, and now every time there is a system update, I have to have the password, which I cannot remember or find.  It then wants it every time I log in and pops up Key Chain Access as well.  Very annoying.  I do not have the disc to reload it and fear I would loose everything on my computer as there is also trouble with the back up system.  Too many issues and not enough solutions.  Many thanks in advance!

I do not have the disc to reload
Why not?  You need your system dvds to troubleshoot & to reset/change passwords in view of your current OS listed in your  profile.
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those - http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html Another resource:  International Support Phone #s.
    ===============
I have to have the password, which I cannot remember or find.
When selecting passwords, make sure it's one that you will NEVER forget AND no one else can figure out.
Old school--- > Print it out & keep in a safe place.  A place that ONLY you know about AND never forget.
New school---> Get a password manager utility.  Highly recommend 1Password which is shareware.  Do a Google search for free password managers.

  • What is the best online backup system to use for Mac?

What is the best online backup system to use for mac?

By online, do you mean backup to the cloud, where you pay a monthly fee for the service to host your data?
If this is the case, then there are a lot of services (do not know them all, but DropBox, CrashPlan, Carbonite, Mozy, SugarSync, come to mine, and that is not a complete list.
There are also services that allow you to backup over your home network or across the internet to your own storage.  CrashPlan has this option (for free), and Transporter come to mind.  CrashPlan talks to another computer also running CrashPlan that you own or have some control (could even be a friend or relatives computer).  Transporter is hardware that you either provide some storage of your choice, or they will sell the unit with storage.
I'm mostly a CrashPlan to my own storage user.  I backup to a Mac mini for my Mom (300 miles away) and Wife (she is local )

  • Change filelocation whilst migrating system using online backup (hom. systemcopy)

    Hi all,
    Situation:
I'm migrating (homogeneous systemcopy) a couple of systems running on windows / oracle to windows / oracle using an online backup created on the source system ((brbackup –c –p initSID.sap –u system/***** -t online) . This backup will be shipped to the target system. I also want to keep and apply the redologs from after this backup to the new target system.
    I need to change driveletters:
    old      SAPDATA_HOME                   T:
    new                                                     X:
    old     ORACLE_HOME                      E:
    new                                                    G:
    old     oraarch                                    P:
    new                                                    Y:
Question: Is this possible? What would be my aproach (using swpm).
    Many thanks!
    Marcel

    Hello Marcel,
Note that when you run the target system installation, you will be running a fresh installation, but the only difference will be you will restore the database during the target system installation.
Therefore, you just need to set all new drive letters when SWPM request for them.

  • What is the best online backup for OS 10.5.8? And if I Reinstall OS will I have problems?

My old Mac has had the flashing question mark file on a blue screen. I waited a couple days, turned it back on and it worked. However, in between that time I went and bought a new Macbook Air. I am relieved to have all of my pics and docs back. I need a good online backup. I downloaded BackBlaze Backup but it is taking forever and I am not sure if it's the best choice.
My plan is to backup all of my files and then wipe my computer clean with the install disks and give my computer to my little sister. So, my question is two fold; which is best online backup and will I have any issues wiping clean the computer and doing a reinstall? For example, will all the updates still be available? What is the best thing for me to do?
    Thank you : )

Just understand it gets pretty expensive after you exceed the free space. 2-5 GBs isn't much space.
    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
         drive being backed up.
    3. Time Machine requires a backup drive that is at least double the
capacity of the drive(s) it backs up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
      1. Cool Drives
      2. OWC
      3. WiebeTech
      4. Firewire Direct
      5. California Drives
      6. NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • Less redo generates at the time of online backup using RMAN

    Hi,
can someone eleborate that why less redo generates at the time of RMAN online backup in comparison of manual hotbackup.
    Thanks

A manual hot backup (aka "OS backup" or "scripted backup") cannot handle fractured blocks. This happens when a backup command is copying out blocks from a datafile at the same time as DBWR is updating blocks. The Oracle Block Size (8KB) is generally a multiple of the OS Block size (512Bytes to 4KB or 8KB, depending on the filesystem / raw device and how the OS command copies blocks out). It is possible for DBWR to write 8KB and the OS backup utility to be concurrently reading the same Oracle block as, say, two different 4KB reads. The first half of the Oracle block may be read by one OS call and the second half by another OS call -- the two halves would be inconsistent with each other if Oracle were writing the database block at the same time.
(Therefore a restore of such a backup would give you an inconsistent -- i.e. fractured -- block, which would be logically corrupt).
In order to handle such issues, after a BEGING BACKUP is issued, for every first change to a database block, the whole block is written to the redo stream, not just the change vectors. (If the same database block is subsequently modified while in BACKUP mode, it is only the change vectors that have to be written to the redo stream). Once the END BACKUP is issued, the redo stream does not need to capture whole database blocks.
If such a backup is restored, it still has fractured blocks. However, when applying the ArchiveLogs generated during the Backup, each such fractured block is "automagically repaired" because a whole image is restored from the ArchiveLog. (Subsequent changes are replayed as changes through the change vectors).
