Online DVD replication/distribution

I wasn't sure where else to ask this, and I figure since many of you guys have been in this for a while and are probably aware of various delivery options, I'd try posting here.
I'm a member of several forums, and one of them is putting together a kind of scrapbook project that compiles creative works by members.
For the graphic/art submissions, the organizer has decided to go with one of those online book-binding services. Basically, you submit all the artwork to them based on their downloadable templates, they print it, bind it and people can order the final product from the website. This site, here, specifically:
http://www.shutterfly.com/shop/Photo_Books_8x8_Story_Book/product_c18020-p3101
I've volunteered to help compile a video submission component, and I'll be authoring the DVD as people submit their videos to me (I'm anticipating a lot of videos in need of correction for pixel aspect ratio issues in the near future, lol).
My question is basically, are there any good online services that are the video/DVD equivalent of the scrapbook/picture book binding service described above? A small-scale (basically to order) replication service that one could submit the ISO of a DVD-Video, discart on some kind of template; and people would be able to order the resultant disc?
thanks in advance,

We just finished a dvd replication job for our summer camp video from New Cyberian in San Jose, CA.  I must say the quality was simply fantistic and the customer service was also great.  I got burned from a company in San Francisco that copied our ISO file as data without converting it to DVD-Video and blamed on us without specifying it.  Fortunately the folks at New Cyberian was able to rectify the problem for us in a very short time.
My experience with cd/dvd copying is not to give orders to so called big companies.  When they are big they will need more time to manage their staffs and there will be less time to manage your order.  Just my two cents.

  • Prepping for Professional DVD replication

I am prepping my FCP movie for DVD authoring and I was wondering if the capability of Compressor is equal to that of the software a professional duplication house would be using the encode video?

You can get very good results from Compressor, more so when you have good footage going in. The professional houses have many many dollars of expensive equipment and often high end source to begin with, so it is a bit of an unfair comparison
That being said, between Compressor, bitVice, Digigami and CinemaCraft there are real good options on the Mac side of things that are affordable and which would do a very good job, and often people would not notice, other than pixel peeper types (generally) The difference is really going to be more from the fact of the source. Also, usually replication is used for professionals(?)
I guess it comes down to what you are considering professional in terms of results. (Not trying to be flippant on that one, just is a term that is hard to nail down without benchmarks.)

  • DVD replication problems

I send a DVD 5 out for replication with a "region 1" setting for the region code. I got a message from the replicators saying that the "Control DATA" and "Main DATA" don't match and must to be replicated. Everything I read in the DVDSP manual says DVDSP automatically sets the "Control DATA" after you set your preferences. Anyone know a fix? It's pretty urgent.
    Thanks!

    Hi Hal,
It's a warning; and either the replicator is not bothering you about it, or they've turned off the reporting for it in their reports.
Funny thing is, if you do click region 7 to play along with just one other region, say, Eclipse will report that a non playbable region has been selected to play, as an information listing - not a warning. But if you check All the regions to play, including region 7, Eclipse won't inform you that region 7 is set to play.
But if you don't click region 7 to play, a value of 1 is placed in that reserved bit by DVD Studio Pro; which by specification can only have a value of zero ('allowed' to play), and Eclipse will report it as a warning.
So I always check Region 7 to play no matter what, because that's specification (a value of zero must be in that region slot) - You know me... a little pedantic at times.
Now, it just occurred to me, thanks to your post, that I might need to check what DVD SP is doing on formatting region 7, maybe I'll leave it unchecked next time and see what happens? - as I've been harping on it and other region matters for so many years - the good programming team at the big Apple might have listened? I'd be shocked
The Scenarist bunch changed their default region 7 setting with the release of 3.0, so anythings possible?

  • Transactional Replication - Distribution agent not pushing some commands

We are experiencing an issue where our log reader is reading the commands and placing them into our distribution database, but when the distribution agent runs it skips certain commands (it is the same commands every time for one of our processes).
I have tried to troubleshoot the issue by running the commands manually on the subscriber, but the commands work just fine.  Also, if I pull the skipped commands out and run them separate from the set on the published database, they do end up getting
    replicated.
We did add a column to the replicated table that is involved just prior to this happening.  However, we did remove the table from the articles and then place it back into the articles to reinitialize the subscription.
    Any ideas?

When you add a new column on the publisher and if you have "replicate schema changes " set to true. you should be able to see the new the column and the data on the subscriber. you do not need too drop the article and add it back and reinitialize.  Right
click on the publisher - properties - subscription options - Replicate schema changes.
I doubt if the reinitialize is waiting on the snapshot to be available. Launch replication monitor and check the if the reinitialize really applied the scripts to the subscriber.
since you removed the article , it will invalidate the current snapshot and after you add it back and reinitialized, you should generate a new snapshot . so, make sure you run the snapshot agent.
on my test here, i had to regenerate the snapshot agent since the reinitialize was waiting on the new snapshot to be available.
    Hope it Helps!!

  • DVD Replication/Duplication Questions

I didn't know where to post this so I figured since it had to do with video production I would post it under the FCP category. I am at the stage in my production of figuring out how to print my DVDs and I have a couple of questions, I am planning on sending in a master to a replication/duplication company to have 100 copies printed with cases.
    Specifications:
    - The film will be 30-40 minutes long
    - It is shot fully Canon DSLRs
    - Footage that is edited is in the format of 1280 x 720 prores 422
    - Master wil be made in Adobe Encore
    - 100 copies will be made
    Questions:
1.) Is there any major difference between duplication and replication of DVD's? the information that I have gathered is that replication is for companies looking to produce thousands and thousands of DVD's where as duplication is for more short run projects that require a couple hundred copies. seeing that I am looking to produce 100 copies I figured this site would be a good way to go http://www.sfvideo.com/ it seems to have a good price and is one of the only sites ive found that lets you place an order under 300 copies.
2.) I have read a bit on printing a master copy of your film and have come to the conclusion that if you are going to replicate mass amounts of DVDs you have to burn to a digital linear tape but if you are doing short run projects you can just burn to a recordable DVD and send it in, is this correct? or do all masters need to be printed to a DLT? or does it just depend on which company you are going through and what they accept? I am going to use Adobe encore to print the DVD.
3.) What type of file should you bring your film into encore in? I am editing with 1280 x720 prores files.
    Thanks,
    Tyler
    Re: Producing an Indie film

First off, you do realize that DVD is an SD medium?  If you want hidef, you'll need to make blue rays.
As to your questions:  Replicated dvd's will play in any player.  Sometimes burned discs will have trouble in some players.  Don't know the place you've mentioned.
Whatever you give a replicator, they will make a glass master from which to replicate.  A DLT is really only necessary if you plan on paying extra for a copy protection scheme.
I've never used encore so cannot help there.
    Anyone else?

  • Replication Distribution log file huge 700gb

Hello to all, Got a replication issue here. I might have found the answer but I'm afraid to run it and want to check with experts first.
I have transactional replication set up on SQL Server 2012 sp1. 13 publications.
Problem: Distribution data file = 19gb Distribution log file = Ballooned to dangerous 700gb
Setup: 1) Transactional replication setup, continuous 2) 13 publications 3) Largest database = 200 gb 4) Distributor properties:  Transaction retention 0-72 hours  History Retention 48 hours 5) Subscriptions all configured as pull
subscriptions 6) Distribution DB recovery model simple 7) Distribution clean up: distribution job run fine in 13 min(kinda long though) 8) Agent history clean up runs fine (2 sec) 9) Expired cleanup job runs fine (17 sec)
I noticed a few setup inefficiencies and recently made this change: 1) Changed each publications from "never expire" to 120 hour retention
Manually ran some diagnostics: Segment Name Group Id Size in MB Space Used Available Space Percent Used distribution 1 19629.00 3635.81 15993.19 18.52 distribution_log 0 774523.06 741109.16 33413.91 95.69
    DBCC OPENTRAN
    No active open transactions
    Manually ran EXEC dbo.sp_MSdistribution_cleanup @min_distretention = 0,@max_distretention = 72 Removed 0 replicated transactions consisting of 0 statements in 80 seconds (0 rows/sec).
    DBCC Loginfo
    Returns 1104 rows
Select name, Log_reuse_wait_desc FROM sys.databasess  Name Log_reuse_wait_desc  distribution LOG_Backup  REPLuserdb Replication
Manually confirmed all data from source to subscriber has been replicated and is a match. The data is all there at the subscriber.
    Considering running the following command I read about in a few blogs: EXEC sp_repldone @xactid = NULL, @xact_segno = NULL, @numtrans = 0, @time= 0, @reset = 1
Then running the distribution cleanup job again or shrinking the log. Is there any danger in this,is this the right approach? THANKS!!!

Good idea changing the recovery model.  I may have also tried simply running the CHECKPOINT statement to see if that helped change status on some of those entries in loginfo.
I may have missed it in your description, but be sure to INCREASE the default growth increment of the log. I've seen many situations where a very small increment is left from db creation and it results in literally 100s of thousands of VLFs. Now that you've
got it shrunk, change the growth increment to try and avoid this in the future.
Verify that your publication has the "immediate_sync" property set to false.  Unless you add subscriptions frequently, this property should always be set to false as it lets the cleanup process cleanup transactions immediately after they have been replicated
to all subscribers.  This means that transactions can be cleaned up from the distribution database ahead of the retention period.  When set to "true" transactions are always retained for the full retention period which can cause the distribution
database to bloat unnecessarily.  There are situations where you want transactions retained (adding new subscriber), but I find it easy to work around those in most cases.
Regarding sp_repldone.  It would have probably been fine to run this and I can tell you that I've never seen it cause reinitialization.  You probably know that this procedure tells the log reader agent to stop scanning, or really that all of the
transactions in the published database log file have been scanned.  It will scan new activity after you run it with those NULLs.  When you run DBCC OpenTran in a replicated database, it tells you the oldest distributed LSN.  repldone basically
updates that value to the most recent LSN in the log - try it on an unimportant database with some activity and see how OpenTran changes.

  • Please Help! I have a subscription/replication issue with the error - Replication-Replication Distribution Subsystem: agent (null) failed. The publication 'blah' does not exist.

I keep getting this error and my subscription table isn't populating:
The publication 'publish_playerSession_off_serverABC' does not exist.
    Other setup items:
    1) Both servers are on the same domain Windows Server 2008 running SQL Server 2008 and the SQL agent is running under a network account.
    2) I have the publication destination on a shared network drive & the network account mentioned above has access to this drive.
    Thanks in Advance! Carl
    Carl

Thanks Tracy - I was able to delete the subscription on the publication server and was able to recreate most of the subscription on the subscription server but so far have been unable to start the subscription agent.
I ran the command exec sp_link_publication yesterday and received the error: "The Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MS DTC) service could not be contacted. If you would like distributed transaction functionality, please start this service."
WTF? Anyhow - Googled this issue for awhile and was advised to run a command with a utility called subinacl.exe but the command failed stating that access is denied even though i'm an admin on my computer & I ran the command promp with elevated privileges.
I also downloaded a tool called DTCping.exe and was able to dtcping each server when the utility was running on the publication & subscription servers after tweaking some registry settings on the subscription server & restarting.
Well now i'm still stuck because the subscription agent is failing to start stating (this is the last error in the job that kicks off the agent):
Agent message code 21056. The subscription to publication 'publish_igt_period_data' has expired or does not exist.
Whew! Well i have other priorities this morning but will update this thread if I make any progress on this issue later...

  • Data replication offline/online

e have a java application which has to work both in off-line and
on-line mode. The application is in two tier architecture and the
    environment is : Forte(IDE),JVM 1.3.0 Hotspot,JDO,pointbase
embedded for offline mode and oracle 8.1.7 for on line mode
(behind a firewall). The user can choose to work in offline mode
and the data has to be moved/replicated to the online DB as soon
as the user connects with the server in online mode next time.
    We have the following problems.
1)The replication of data from offline to online is not working-
mainly due to firwall. We cannot have a workaround by allowing
    all users thro'firewall.
2)Forte /JDO do not support oracle lite(in place of point
base). We are not able to convert the persistent classes to jar.
    3) Switching over to 3 tier architecture/ JDBC(replacing JDO)
may solve some problem but involves lot of effort.
-Is there any other suitable database?
-Is there any other method to overcome this problem?

  • A way to test DDP image project (DVD-9)?

When you use for example Gearsoft Pro Mastering software to create DDP images for your DVD-9 project (you created VIDEO_TS folder with Encore CS3) and set the correct layer break for it, is there a way to somehow test the DDP images with the set layer break?
It would be nice to test it by burning the project to a DVD-9 with the layer break set to test how it looks like and how it works, before bringing the DDP files to the replication factory and making thousands of DVDs for distribution of a product you haven't been able to properly test how it works?
    Thank you.

    >Double-click on a PGC.
    Or press ENTER.
This should - assuming you are looking at a PGC - take you to a screen where you can see all the info you need. For full details, open PGCEdit documentation from the Help file, and in the search box, type "layer break".
Ok, double click what PGC where? Sorry to be a bit pain in the *** but could you be a bit more specific? :) Opened also the documentation but couldn't find the "layer break".
    >See http://www.gearsoftware.com/howtoguides/restoreddpimage.cfm
    and adapt as necessary.
Ok, let's assume that the DDP went right. What about burning the project straight from GEAR? You have the layer break set and everything is ready in the project. Then you click that "write image to disc" buttonm, this should be the exactly same DVD that is being recorded to the DDP, right? It did burn the project to the DVD, but when I examine the burned DVD in GEAR's Disc info panel, it says it is DVD-ROM and the layer break is at sector 2092896, which means it didn't make it to the point where it was in the project which was at sector 188480. So, is it possible to burn the DVD in Gear as DVD-Video with the settings in the project file? This would be I think the fastest way to test the layer break etc. in the dvd?

  • Premiere Elements 12 -Only buring HD but really want standard DVD

My video project is made up of HD video footage; however, I need to burn to Standard DVD for distribution to a number of volunteers who are featured.
I have chosen DVD - Disc (both wide and standard) -- each time the video comes out in HD and will not play on standard DVD players or in the non-Blu Ray burner on my computers. I see no options in Premiere Elements 12 to override burning in HD.
I've never had the problem with previous videos using same software and computer. Although those were a different selection of blank DVDs.
Is there a solution or is it possible that I purchased blank Blu Ray DVDs instead of standard. There is no labeling left on my DVD stack of 100  (also nothing on individual discs) although the center ring is surrounded by a blue ring.
Is there any other way to tell if they are Blu Ray and not standard DVDs?
    Thanks,
    Bill

    BillMMBill
There appears to be a basic misunderstanding here of the burn to options in Premiere Elements 12 in particular.
Please allow me to explain, and please excuse anything that I will write that you already know....
The regular DVD player will playback DVD-VIDEO Standard (4:3) or (16:9). Assuming a NTSC setup, that is characterized by
    720 x 480 4:3 @ 29.97 interlaced frames per second and 720 x 480 16:9 @ 29.97 interlaced frames per second. When these are
the choices that you want, you use
    Publish+Share
    Disc
    DVD
disc with Presets = NTSC_Dolby Digital (for the 4:3) and NTSC_Widescreen_Dolby DVD (16:9)
    You do not use
    Publish+Share
    Disc
AVCHD disc (which is a HD AVCHD format on a DVD disc....this will not playback on the regular DVD player....here you can expect
    resolution of 1920 x 1080)
The only possibility for you obtaining what you say relate to you selecting AVCHD instead of DVD. Is that a possibility?
There is no Blu-ray DVD disc or ACVHD DVD disc; there is Blu-ray disc format on a Blu-ray disc, AvCHD format on a DVD disc, each differing from DVD-VIDEO format on a DVD disc.
As for DVD discs, 4.7 GB/120 minutes; 8.5 GB/240 minutes.
As for Blu-ray discs, 25 GB or 50 GB.
If you have a HD 16:9 project and you want to take it to a DVD disc that will playback on the regular DVD player, then you use
    Publish+Share
    Disc
    DVD
disc with a preset specifically for NTSC_Widescreen_Dolby DVD which is 16:9.
    Please review and consider.
    Thank you.

  • Is there a workaround for authoring FCPX project to DVD SP or iDVD?

Like many others, the projects I work on MUST be output to DVD for distribution.
SO...is it possible to simplly output to COMPRESSOR 4 and THEN use an older version of DVDSP (in my case - A LOT older as in DVDSP 3 via FCP 4.5?)
(BTW - I have not loaded my old FCP 4.5 discs on my new laptop -  Am I asking for trouble if I do this since it is not an intel based program AND it also requires QT 7.2 to correctly function? )
If that is not workable - what about iDVD?  I have never used it.  In my brief tour through the program, it doesn't appear you can use custom templates, but I could be wrong?
I appreciate all constructive feedback from those of you who are generous enough to share your time and knowledge.

As Shawn said, the share option would seem to be your best bet.
However, take a look at this regarding the compatibility  between your older version of DVDSP and your new Intel
    MBP. https://discussions.apple.com/message/12257054?messageID=12257054
If you instead use iDVD, you would go directly from the QT movie export to iDVD.
    Good luck,
    Russ
