Online Magazine Publication

Hi,
I am part of a team of people who are planning to launch an online magazine for sport horses in the next four to six months.  I will be the lead designer and tech guy for the enterprise.  However, I have never done anything quite like this before, and need some help.
I plan on designing the magazine layout in InDesign.  I am not sure what software or service to use to publish this product.  Any suggestions?  We are planning on making a page flipping, picture, video and text magazine.  Take a look at This is Fly or Catch Magazine for an example of what we like.  These two publications are what we would love to end up looking like.  What software or service would you guys suggest?  Thanks a ton.

I have solution called eDocBrowser. With it you can export your magazine to SWF-format from InDesign as usual, with page flipping, buttons, hyperlinks etc... When you publish your SWF-files, you simply add couple of extra files into same folder and you have ready-to-use magazine with lots of extra features like zooming for instance. Whole user interface that comes with eDocBrowser is customizable. You can put your magazines logo there, you can change appereance ob buttons, user interface top- and bottom bar.... and you can put more than one SWF there if you like, several issues of magazine, or you can split large file to parts and export one SWF/per part. eDocBrowser links them together as they were one SWF file.
Single license of eDocBrowser costs 80 euros (aprx 100 dollars).
More versatile +eDocBrowser is coming too, there is also a text search, possibility to change resolution of SWFs (indesign normally uses resolution of 96ppi when you export SWF).
Demo magazines:
http://www.prepress.fi/eDocBrowser
This is actually dummy series of 3 SWF files, all of them exported from indesign
http://www.prepress.fi/e_news
This is series of two magazines, experimental text search is activated here, try word PrePress for instance, it gives you more than one hit... (write it like that, with capital P letters... search is so far case sensitive)

Does Adobe CC have at solution for making HTML5 interactive online magazines? (not a FLASH solution from indesign)

I don't know what the quark plugin does, I'm guessing that it is reading from an external file that contains the price information. An ordinary method of dealing with updatable information in Flash is to use an external file, usually in .xml format. You can update the xml file or have your database do it for you, and then every time a user hits your site, the data is read from the .xml file. Each user will get the latest prices.

  • Navigation bar online magazine Indesign CS5

    Hi,
I need for my online magazine (exported as (interactive) swf or pdf) buttons like zoom in and zoom out. I know how to put in buttons for previous and next pages. But with what (Adobe) program can you add the zoom in and out function for an online magazine? For example like what online services like Issuu.com do.
I have read the threads here but I don't know an answer yet to my obstacle. Hopefully somebody can enlighten me
This thread comes close to my question: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/323955?tstart=0 but this one is about CS4. I am working in Indesign CS5.
I have read some solutions about actionscript, but I have no experience in actionscript. I have the Adobe Standard Design package, so isn't there a program included in this package which I can use to make my magazine readable on internet?

    Yopu mean something like this:
    http://www.urbis.com.au/ftpupload/Annual_2010/annual2010.html
    or
    http://www.thefamousgrouse.com/tfgtimes/
I´m afraid you will need some help of third-party tools like eDocker (http://www.edocker.com)
Those samples have been done in InDesign and after exported as SWF, and finalized with eDocker2 Desktop Publisher.

  • Can't download online magazines on original iPad anymore that I've subscribed to for a while...

Even though I am signed it, it still thinks I need to buy them event though I have paid print subscriptions and have had no previous issues downloading.  I have tried to sign out and sign back in, and it won't let me log back on, I get a grey background with "waiting white circle".  Tech support had me re-set all settings, delete and apps and re-install, and they still don't work.  He thought it might be an iTunes account issue, and to contact Express Lane...they answered with generic email.  Help!

No, in fact we double checked that my ID and password were still current....and I can do everything else in iTunes like download apps, etc.  Just can't get all magazine subscriptions to recognize my ID.  ANy ideas how to get Apple to help?  Express Lane folks keep sending me around in a loop.

  • I need help making a popup menu activate a customized lightbox for a digital magazine/publication.

I'm not much of a programmer since my experience is in animation, but I need to make a popup window link to/activate a lightbox. I did well just to get the button to make the popup work since I have no programming experience! So now, on to something a little more complex for me! A button is basically supposed to bring up a menu (which I got to work) and the menu is supposed to have links that the user can click on to open up a lightbox similar to the one that opens up on the first click of this example: http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/e9dd9178?viewType=pubPreview#/e9dd9178/1
These were the instructions I was given, but I'm not sure where to even place this code! Please help!
For example for Brides/Target this looks like this:
    if (window.location.host.indexOf("brides.com") !== -1) {
                document.domain = "brides.com";
            $('.productImages1').click(function() {
                openLightbox("http://www.target.com/p/riedel-vivant-champagne-flutes-set-of-4/-/A-10077709#prodSlot=medi um_1_1&term=200-03-1024?ref=tgt_adv_XC&afid=d_brides&cpng=2013weddingregistry&DFA=1");
                trackEvent("show", {page: 19, id: 'A-10077709', name: 'riedel-vivant-champagne-flutes-set-of-4'});    //_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'Target Advertisment', 'Show', 'Page 19 - item 1']); });

I was also given this information, but since I can't really read or write code, this means nothing to me. Is this something I can paste in the stages action panel or on the actual buttons that I'm wanting to call up the lightboxes? I like Edge because it seems to be easy and user friendly for creative/non-programmers like myself, but this is getting a bit complex for me. How can I go about this without having to code HTML5 from scratch?
In the header of the HMTL file, you'll need to add a reference to the Zmags API.
    Example in Header
    <script src="//secure.api.viewer.zmags.com/widgets/iframe.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
    Example with Javascript section:
<script type="text/javascript">  // Opens the specified url in a lightbox, and applies the supplied css to it, if any; otherwising defaulting to the // standard width and height for the lightbox. To explicitly close the lightbox, call close() on the returned lightbox. function openLightbox(url, css) { return window.parent.parent.com.zmags.ps.widget.openLightbox(url, css || {"width": "100%", "max-width": 1010, "height": 780}); } // Shares the specified url on the given network, with optional title and image. This will automatically trigger // tracking of the shared url, so no need to do so here. function shareUrl(network, url, image, title) { return window.parent.parent.com.zmags.ps.widget.sharing.shareUrl('widget', network, url, title || 'Check out this product from Target', image); } // Tracks the logical action, e.g. "show", "overview" event, with the supplied arguments. The actual event action/label // formatting is handled by the Zavior configuration, and can have values injected, like if "args" = {page: 7, name: 'foo', id: 'bar', item: 1}, // a configured label can utilise these data like "${page}" and "${item}". function trackEvent(action, args) { if (!args) { args = {}; } return window.parent.parent.com.zmags.ps.widget.trackEvent("google_analytics", action, args); } if (window.location.host.indexOf("brides.com") !== -1) { document.domain = "brides.com"; } $('.productImages1').click(function() { openLightbox("http://www.target.com/p/giada-de-laurentiis-for-target-6-qt-cast-iron-dutch-oven/-/A-11992 552#prodSlot=medium_1_1&term=11992552?ref=tgt_adv_XC&afid=d_brides&cpng=2013weddingregistr y&DFA=1"); trackEvent("show", {page: 8, id: 'A-11992552', name: 'giada-de-laurentiis-for-target-6-qt-cast-iron-dutch-oven'}); //_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'Target Advertisment', 'Show', 'Page 8 - item 1']); }); $('#activateBtn').click(function() { document.getElementById('activateBtn').style.visibility = 'hidden'; //trackEvent("overview", {page: 8}); $('#big_wrapper').animate({ left: '+=100%' }, 1000, function() { //do nothing }); }); $('#deactivateBtn').click(function() { $('#big_wrapper').animate({ left: '-=100%' }, 1000, function() { document.getElementById('activateBtn').style.visibility = 'visible'; }); }); </script>

  • Need to make an online magazine like the one shown in the tutorial on AdobeTV

It appeared that all I need is InDesignCS6, which I purchased.  I now see I also must purchased the digital publishing suite for $395 to make one magazine.  Then I must pay Apple $99.  We don't want to sell an app.  I work for a public school district and this is beyond the budget.  The tutorial said that one could make an app viewable on an android, ipad, iphone and desktop which would be perfect.  I now see this is something we can't afford.  I also read that an interactive pdf which indesign can create, cannot be viewed on ipads.  Am I correct that my only option is to make webpages and forget all about the magazine?

    Nicole
Im afraid you are correct in your understanding. (Even if you dont sell the app the delivery process is the same) Plus as Im going through the process for the first time myself I can tell you the actual publishing process after completion of job in indesign is complex, and very frustrating - even to someone who has used Indesign since version 1, there is big and tricky void between Adobe and Apple that has to be crossed. It is taking hours and literally days to resolve.
Once its sorted the results are fabulous but be prepared for a long journey to get there.
PS: Buying cloud gives you free single edition licenses but the apple developer fees still apply. Have you looked at apple ibooks?

  • Have an online magazine called Game Informer from GameStop that I cannot read on Firefox any help?

I can open this magazine in IE (yuk!) but cannot open in Firefox (the best) is there anything I can do to get this to work. Appreciate it thank you. When I open the magazine it just continues to load but no pages load in IE it loads within seconds and I can peruse the articles.

    First, the general suggestion:
''When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.''
    (1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"
If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.
    (2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.
Then try reloading the page. Does that help?
It appears that the magazine is "published" using the Flash plugin.
''This is some standard guidance that addresses the most common issues with Flash.'' I'm sure you've seen some of it before, but just in case:
    (1) Make sure all recorders/downloaders that interact with Flash media are as up-to-date as possible, or disable them.
    (2) Disable hardware graphics acceleration in Firefox and in Flash
    (A) In Firefox, un-check the box here and restart:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > General > "Use hardware acceleration when available"
    (B) In Flash, see this support article from Adobe: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/video-playback-issues.html#main_Solve_video_playback_issues
    (3) Disable protected mode (Windows Vista/7/8)
See this support article from Adobe under the heading "Last Resort": [http://forums.adobe.com/message/4468493#TemporaryWorkaround Adobe Forums: How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?]

  • Converting magazine pdf to online pdf magazine viewer

I tried to search to look for this info but the search
feature has been throwing errors for me the last couple of days.
What I'm trying to do is see if CF has features or functions that
would allow me to use the pdf files used for print production of a
magazine to create an online magazine viewer on my web site. I'm
specifically looking for the forward and backward navigation,
search, links and so forth. I've seen plenty of sites using this
type of viewer/reader but wonder if this is something I could
    create using Cold Fusion.

If you want to *create* an online reader, then you are
    talking about
Windows|Mac|Linux desktop programming to create a client
    plug-in for
browsers. ColdFusion does not really do this.
That example you provided to is just FlashPaper. Just such a
    client,
plug-in tool created originally by Macromedia now acquired by
    Adobe
    http://www.adobe.com/products/flashpaper/
    There is lots of
speculation if this product will continued to be developed,
    dropped in
    favor of Adobe Reader [
    http://get.adobe.com/reader/
    or merge the two
products. I am not aware if any official information has been
    provided
    along these lines.
These are not the only such plug-ins, but they are the best
    known. A
    bit of Googling turned up

    "PDF

  • How can I pubish SWF interactive magazine to flash based website? It's not working!

I hope someone can help me launch my first interactive magazine (SWF) to our website with ID 5. Okay, my hard copy mag came out great so then I started on the interactive edition. Everything was going swell with adding 3 short videos ( FLV  ) and creating 3 slide shows. When I previewed it by exporting to SWF I could preview it in my browser fine. Page curls, fade in words (although the “hide until animated” options only works in two out of about 7 instances. (same settings) file:///C:/Users/lauralaptop/Documents/NEW%20PUBLICATION%20QUARTERLY%20JOURNAL%202011%20se pt%202/LIFE%20apr-may-june%202011%201st%20issue%20INTERACTIVE%20TRYOUT%20Aug%2031%204pm.ht ml
I then followed instructions from another Adobe exercise, exported it to Flash, went to Publish Settings, but of course when I pressed “publish” I didn’t get the same result as the teacher…I got an error message about text. I searched a forum with the same message I got and saw that making sure my text setting was set for Classic, solved someone else’s problem. So I did and was able to “publish”. But now, when I open either the SWF or HTML file, it’ just rapidly repeating the 12 pages in my file in a loop!
    file:///C:/Users/lauralaptop/Desktop/LIFE%20apr-may-june%202011%201st%20issue%20INTERACTIV E%20TRYOUT%20Aug%2031%204pm.html
I have spent most of the summer self teaching myself InDesign CS5 (not easy!) and am excited to be able to put out an interactive SWF file that can be opened in a Flash player through our Flash based website. I feel like I’m just inches away for launch but now I’m getting frustrated. Isn’t this going to be possible?
Also, when I publish it in Flash, it creates a SWF file AND an HTML file. But on our website, I have only one option to make a link to a document OR an outside link to open a file. How does that work?
Many thanks for whoever can help me out here. This was supposed to be a spring issue. Had to change it to summer and now I guess it’s a fall launch!

Thank you for your quick reply, Rob. Well, i can't open the link you gave me to mysite (got a 404 error), could you resend it?
Originally, I exported the file to SWF (player) and just tried to link that file from our flash based website. It opens fine, page curls fine, slide shows fine, but when you click on the photos with videos, page 5 (father and baby) and two others, the image disappears and only a white comes up to fill that area.
http://scpres.org/#/media-sermons-online/our-publications. Could you go to this link on our website to see what I mean? Go to the NEWSBREAK TRANSFORMS and click on the Life, Stories of Transformation.
Rob, here is where i have very limited knowledge: As I said we use a flash based (read very user friendly) web hosting company. When I am in the back end to upload the swf file, I have only one option  - "attach a video, attach a document, attach a link" so how would I upload a "folder" with more than one item to the server?
I thought it would be considered a video since the SWF file says SWF movie, but when I when i try to upload as a video, it doesn't come up as importable. (am i sounding really stupid?) Maybe I should admit that yes, I'm an ID5 newbie AND yes,  I'm no spring chicken but I have been working in CS2,3,4 for several years and now 5 and am quite proficient in the create aspect of Adobe products. It's just now the technical part about how to actually get my  in work published to the site. There isn't anyone else in my company able to help me so I have to reach out to this forum!
I love ID and this is just my first effort but I'm looking forward to creating many more interactive magazines for my company.
    Thanks for any help.

  • CSS or Java Script to top left align a web magazine?

We have created an online magazine with InDesign and exported it as an HTML file. The problem is it default centers and I would like it to align to the top left of the screen. The only way I see to do this right now is to add a CSS or Java script when I export it, but I cannot get it to work. Any suggestions?
Also, any suggestions as to the best options for sizing the magazine to different screen resolutions? We are trying to make this available in all sizes, but I would like it to auto resize based on the size of the reader's screen.
    Thanks!!

    Thanks,
I got it worked, I used the belw code.

    var sType = form["headerForm:sType"].value;

    var partNumber = form["headerForm:partNumber"].value;

  • InDesign layout embedding into blog/website as a magazine layout to flip pages

Does anybody know if it's possible to use a layout made in InDesign and embed it into blog/html as an online magazine that flips pages? something similar to what ISSUU uses. an example of this is below:
    www.intandemmagazine.com
    let me know asap thanks!

That job didn't come right out of ID. There's a lot of flash in the
magazine and the export to SWF doesn't support that.
It could have been export to XFL and finished in Flash Pro but that's a
good deal more work than just exporting to SWF.
If "Ansel" is willing to live with static pages, then yes, ID CS4 is
    quite capable of doing this.

  • HighResDownload of magazine with Adobe Reader X - Error Msg

Am using AdobeReader X.  Subscribe to magazine that comes as a pdf.  When I download the low-resolution magazine, all works fine.  I typically download the High-resolution magazine and sometimes I get the following Adobe Reader X error:  "The file is damaged and could not be repaired.  Local\EWHf@8'))%@"  When I contacted the magazine the woman says she's had no calls about this error or any other problem with the high-res downloads.

    Classification: UNCLASSIFIED
    Caveats: NONE
Thank you very much for contacting me.
The OS I'm using is Windows XP, Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 3
    Adobe X (10.1.1)
I subscribe to an online magazine.  Every month, I get an E-mail with this link:
    http://www.monitoringtimes.com/MT/html/download_issue.html
I click on that link and click on the current month's magazine (September 2012) and a login message appears which requires a USER Name
    And PASSWORD
What occurs next is you are asked to AGREE or DO NOT AGREE with the download.  I click AGREE
The next thing that happens is I'm asked whether I want the Low Resolution or High Resolution version.  While I have NO problem downloading the LOW Resolution version, my current problem (that I wrote you all about) is downloading the HIGH Resolution version.
After clicking on the High Resolution version, the screen goes black (the lower portion) and remains that way for a while (MUCH longer than when you ask for the LOW Resolution version of the magazine) and then, finally, I get
Adobe error: "Adobe Reader X" and "The file is damaged and could not be repaired.  Local\EWHf@B'))%@"
I'd like to give you the link(s) but I signed a statement that I wouldn't (a condition of the subscription).  The important factors are:
I CAN download the smaller file (LOW RESOLUTION) but NOT the HIGH RESOLUTION (larger file size).  MOST of the downloads have been the HIGH RESOLUTION and never had any problems.  Yesterday was my first such problem.  I had several issues to download and hoped to download the HIGH RESOLUTION as I'd always done and while MOST were downloaded just fine, there were two (2) months of the magazine where I COULD DOWNLOAD the LOW RESOLUTION version but NOT the HIGH.  The publisher claims they've had no calls about the editions I've had problems with.
Finally, I am using the laptop I always use and am at work using it where I get a VERY strong signal from VERIZON for my USB Modem which is how I get onto the Internet.
Does any of this help to "Point the Finger" at something?
    Thanks very much.

Can a photoshop cmyk psd file converted to photoshop PDF be used online, or 1st convert to RGB? (the client requested 300 res. and is using it for their online magazine)

There should be no difficulty using CMYK online - all PDF viewers have to be able to convert to RGB for the screen. But I'd be very concerned about putting 300 dpi online. You should shrink it down to a suitable screen resolution.
