Online Video Playback Jolting/skipping

Sorry if i've posted in the wrong sub-forum, I will move elsewhere if necessary.
My problem is with online video playback, whether on youtube, vimeo, facebook or myspace, it's always the same problem.
The video, even when fully buffered jolts, or skips, the sounds is usually ok [not for vimeo. The video literally stops and starts every 1-3 seconds repeatedly. This makes watching some videos very irritating and i have no clue to avoid it. I've researched it and found nothing.
I use the latest Firefox [3.0.5], and it doesn't seem to be as bad with Safari

I'm afraid this is the wrong sub-forum, but never mind!
It sounds very much like a line speed problem. Even when "fully buffered", the buffers can empty distressingly fast, leaving your playback hiccuping.
There are three approaches that I know of:
1) Have a go at your ISP/telecoms company, and get them to check the line, the ADSL gear, and the speed of your connection (try also with Speedtest or a similar service).
2) Try resetting/restarting your modem and/or router.
3) If nothing can be done to improve the situation, download your videos before watching them (e.g. using RealPlayer Download Manager, or by ctrl-clicking and choosing Download Linked File.
Good luck!

  • Online video playback is severally laggy/choppy on my macbook pro 2011?

hey guys, got a bit of an issue here. I've been noticing some SEVERE lagging issues whilst viewing online (streaming) video, from various sites, including, novamov, youtube, and others. the videos rarely stop to buffer as i have a fast connection, but yet they still seem to lag wildly. what i mean by this, is the sound will continue as normal, the the picture will freeze sometimes for a good 5 seconds or so before resuming, this is happening increasingly more and more..
i am running Mac OSX Lion (latest Update) on my:
    MacBook Pro
    17-inch, Early 2011
Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
    Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50b)
If it helps my hard drive space is:
    Macintosh HD
    Capacity: 664 GB
    Available: 179.79 GB
The browser i am using is the latest version of Safari, although i have tried firefox and chrome and i experience the same issue.
I have Sophos anti-virus installed and run regular scans on my system (all clear)
i really can't think of anything else which could be causing an issue here. I haven't installed any additional software for a while, not in the time frame since the error started to occur.
I am quite surprised to be experiencing such issues as lagging on something as simple as a youtube video when my £3000+ computer handles heavy applications such as Final cut pro and Photoshop with ease...
i MUST be missing something here,
I really would appreciate any help i can get here.
thankyou very much for your time

    Hi Ben...
I am quite surprised to be experiencing such issues as lagging on something as simple as a youtube video
Try troubleshooting the Flash plugin required for most YouTube video.
Quit all open browsers. I'm using Safari as a test.
Open System Preferences > Flash Player then select the Storage tab. Click: Delete All
Now uninstall the Flash plugin then reinstall new >  Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS
Make sure and uninstall the current plugin first.
Then launch Safari. From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache
    Now try a video.
BTW... if you have the ClickToFlash extension installed, that can prevent Flash based video from streaming. It can also be installed as a plugin in /Library/Internet-Plug-Ins.
And check to see if Safari is running in 32 bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. If the box next to:  Open in 32 bit mode  is selected, deselect, quit then relaunch Safari.

  • ITunes Video Playback - Sound skipping

Hi - Just bought a new PC and have installed iTunes and brought over all my sound and video files to it via iPod hard disk function. Music is playing perfectly. All video playback is accompanied by terrible stuttering and spluttering of the audio. This is occuring at all times - even if iTunes is the only app running. DVD playback fantastic on PC as is video playback using other apps. Videos i'm trying to play are all under 5 minutes long and differ in type from video podcasts to Pixar content bought from itunes shop. New PC has brilliant spec so don't understand - any suggestions? All help much appreciated - regards!!

I almost have the same problem with the Video Podcast the sound is bad, For the audio only it works perfectly. At first everything was in order and worked well.
Then for no reason I got the trouble with the sound of the Video Podcast there was echoes and the quality was poor.
Cause it’s new computer I re-installed everything, so it worked well again. Then after going on a web site that uses active X for animation I got the problem back. I have no idea if Active X QuickTime are connected but each time the pattern the same.
Have tried to re-install iTunes the Quick Time I have changed the Audio option about filters in both nothing helped.

after upgraded to 2.0.1, video playback is broken! there is no video but audio is coming through. This apply to online video playback as well like youtube. anyone facing the same problem? How can i restore to 2.0?

Just completed my update to 2.01 and my movies and youtube play fine. Not sure how to go back to 2.0. When you go into iTunes there is a restore button that you might try. Don't know if you can select to reinstall 2.01.

  • Video playback problems in iMovie08

I have been using iMovie08 for a while and have suddenly started having performance problems. When playing back an edited video CPU utilisation is maxing out and the video playback is skipping frames. This same video has not been a problem previously. I have noticed that there are quite a few similar issues being reported following the latest Quicktime update, I'm not sure if this is related but it is a coincidence.
The video plays back ok with music but as soon as a title displays the CPU goes from 70% to 90%+ and the video jumps from frame to frame rather than playing smoothly. Is anyone else having similar problems. I know iMovie08 is a pretty processor and memory intensive app but basically my experience suggests that a G5 iMac with 2.5GB memory isn't big enough to run iMovie08 when nothing else is running.

I can't be the only one with this issue. It affects both my iTunes on my mac mini and my iBook

  • Improving quality of streaming video playback

    Here's my system:
PowerMac G4/450 Sawtooth tower, upgraded to dual 450 mhz processor
    1 GB RAM
ATI Radeon 9800 pro 128 MB video card (modded version)
    OS Tiger 10.4.11
Online video playback from sites like YouTube, Hulu, etc. is choppy. It's not too bad. Probably only a few frames short. But, it is noticeable, and I'd like to improve it. I've played around with some of the settings in the ATI Display Preferences, but haven't been able to get it to look any better. Anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking I might have to upgrade the CPU to something faster, but would like to avoid that if possible. Also, if it matters, I only have the G4 connected via S-video to a TV. That's it. (And one more thing - I have a broadband Internet connection, and the other computers that share the connection have no problems with video streaming, so I'm pretty sure it's not a lack-of-bandwidth issue.)

Just to clarify, you don't mean because the computer was originally a single 450, do you? 'Cause it was upgraded to a dual 450 at some point in the past. (I picked up the computer used.) I figured I'd probably have to do another upgradeto the processor to fix the problem. But if the fact that the machine was originally a single 450 is always going to hold it back, then there's no reason to upgrade again.

  • Video Playback Skipping After Updating Memory Storage

I am currently using a Macbook from 2006, originally running on OS X Tiger but upgraded to OS X Snow Leopard back in 2009. That switch worked fine, no problems. Recently, in an attempt to make my macbook faster, I upgraded the Memory storage. This is my systems original hardware specs:
      Model Name: MacBook
      Model Identifier: MacBook1,1
      Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
      Processor Speed: 2 GHz
      Number Of Processors: 1
      Total Number Of Cores: 2
      L2 Cache: 2 MB
      Memory: 1 GB
      Bus Speed: 667 MHz
      Boot ROM Version: MB11.0061.B03
      SMC Version (system): 1.4f12
I upgraded the Memory from 1 GB to 2 GB as was recommended by Crucial.com. Since the upgrade, any time I watch videos on my computer, the video freezes, skips and/or the audio cuts in and out. I've since switched my Memory back to 1GB and still encounter the same issues. Aside from stating the obvious -- yes I know it's an old computer and I'm due for a computer upgrade in general -- is there a way to improve this video playback issue? Or is the other hardware in my Macbook so dated that the Memory upgrade is too powerful for my computer to maintain? Any serious feedback is much appreciated.

The memory upgrade isn't too powerful, and Snow Leopard should run ok in 2gb of ram. Video takes a lot of resources, try to not have anything else running when you watch video and see if that helps.  Are you trying to watch online videos or are these videos stored on your hard drive or a DVD? You might try running Activity Monitor to see if something is running in the background using up valuable resources
Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory and determine how much RAM is being used (OS X Mountain Lion and earlier)
MAkesure that both sticks of memory are being recognized and also make sure that your hard drive isn't getting too full.

  • Zen X-Fi2 - Choppys/skipping video playback

+ Just wondering if anyone else has this issue?
I'll get choppy or out of sync sound with avi/divx etc (whatever format tv shows are recorded in).
I have only just upgraded the latest firmware and?haven't tried playing any videos again - although the firmware doesn't mention any video fixes....
Its strange - my (slowly dying) Zen Vision: M plays things perfectly but the X-Fi2 just doesn't cope.

    /Re: Zen X-Fi2 - Choppys/skipping video playback< Hi,
I was wondering, is the video playback also choppy? Because the X-Fi2 does have some limitations concerning the resolution and the bitrate of the video part of the file. If they are too high it will get choppy or doesn't play at all.
If it is just the sound that is choppy, I would have a look at the audio format. I read (www.formatoz.com) with these settings:?
video: AVI, mpeg-4 (Xvid) , resolution: 640x480 (or lower), bitrate:?768.
audio: mp3, bitrate doesn't really matter.
About the difference with your Vision: M , I also noticed that my old Zen Vision was a little less picky about the formats in the video... maybe that one had a stronger processor?

  • ITunes 11 HD video playback slow/choppy/stutter/skipping in OSX

    Hi guys,
I'm running iTunes 11.0.1 in OS 10.8.2 on my 2.66 GHzm, 8 GB RAM MacBook Pro and playback in HD (1080p) movies/TV shows in iTunes is slow, choppy, stuttering and skipping. Can't seem to fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

I was having this same problem, and found one cause.
I have an extensive library on a Drobo FS.  None of the AppleTV's in the house have any problem streaming full 1080p from it, but my new iMac does.  Choppy / laggy video play.  Movies and TV shows right from the iTunes store.  I can have 3 TV's streaming, and even a 4th laptop, all streaming from the iMac iTunes using the Drobo.  They all have zero issues.  No lag, no choppy, nothing.  iMac has the issue even when nothing else is running.  Every time.
BTW, it's happend on my old iMac and the brand new one, both with iTunes 11.
I was told to try setting up a second account on my iMac, and try playing video there.  It worked.  No problems at all.  Weird.
So I started looking at differences between the new account, and my standard.  I'd already made sure nothing unusual was running, and no processor hogs (not that anything short of Handbrake at full settings has come close to pegging out the processers on the new box).  I found one thing, that made a difference.  I had Timemachine backups, going to the same Drobo FS (though a different partition) turned on on the iMac.
Timemachine was running the whole time, and didn't impact any other streaming from the same machine, but it did make iTunes video playback of 1080p movies skip like my 6 year old daughter on the iMac.  I turned it off.... no more skipping.  I've watched 5 TV shows and 2 movies on that account, and not had another single incident.
Obviously, there is still a problem.  The iMac and Drobo have enough bandwidth that they can do all the work at the same time (or I'd be seeing the problem on the other devices while streaming), but they are not playing well together on the same account.  I've also checked the throughput to the Drobo FS from the iMac... way more than necessary.  If it were a read / write thing on the Drobo, then I'd expect other devices to see the issue when I'm watching something on the iMac that is skipping, but there was still no skipping on any other device at that same time...
But, as I said, I found the root cause in my case.  I can turn off Timemachine backups while I'm watching a movie on the iMac, or I can move where I write the Timemachine backups to (going to try this over the weekend to be sure it works).  If moving the Timemachine backup to a different drive doesn't work, it's a bigger problem.
I'd really love to see Apple fix this and the issue where I have to turn iTunes on in 32bit mode when using an external library (of it gives the funky quicktime error until you delete and readd the movie).
Hope this helps some of you, if not all.

  • Video playback skips/stalls

    Greetings all.
    Bit of a mystery here.
I have a Late 2009 iMac that I occasionally use Win7 on via Boot Camp for gaming.
I have iTunes installed so I can watch Movies/TV Shows from my library (served via iTunes running on 2012 i7 Mac Mini).
When playing any video in Windows 7 with iTunes (SD/HD), it stutters, skips and eventually stalls.
The curious issue is when booted into OS X, I can play the same video in iTunes with no problem.
I have attempted the fix in the KB article related to iTunes/Windows 7 video playback.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1718
(disable Direct3D accel/Disable DirectX in QuickTime)
    The iMac specs are:
i7, 16GB RAM, 2TB HDD, 512MB Radeon 4850M, 1Gbit wired ethernet to same switch as Mini
    OS X 10.8.5
    Windows 7 64-bit, SP1
    Thanks!

    Ok, did some further experimentation.
The same movie plays perfectly on:
My iMac (OS X), 13" MBP (OS X), iPhone 5S, iPad 2, iPad Mini, 2 AppleTVs
It will NOT play on the iMac (Windows 7) or the MacBook Pro (Windows 7) using iTunes 11.1.1
The two machines CAN play the same .m4v file outside of iTunes (using VLC) perfectly.
    The problem is absoutely iTunes.

  • ITunes / Windows Video Playback.. (what, you actualy want to WATCH vid's?)

I'm sure there are several people out there that are having the same or similar problems, but because I can't seem to find them with the exact problem I'm having, I thought a new thread would be appropriate....
Upgraded from 6 to 7 yesterday... music seems to play OK (not as good as 6, but not all the issues other people are having). Now video playback in iTunes is little more than a slideshow with audio to (almost) match.
When I go to play back any vid podcast, or other video in my library for that matter, iTunes bumps my processor up to 100% and holds it there, and the video does little more than skip and bounce through the entire playback (even if the overlay controls go away fully, the slightest mouse movement brings them back). The audio quality seems to almost follow the video, but they get away from each other (the audio was about 2 seconds ahead of the video/slide show while watching the current version of Photoshop TV). Any other video player works fine, but if I wanted to use them, I would have never installed iTunes in the first place, the idea being that the integration was the blessing.
I USED to be able to watch a video, use Photoshop CS2, have Flash 8 open behind it, After Effects running on a seperate monitor, browse the web, and play freecell all at the same time, with several background utility style apps going all at the same time with out a hickup.
After trying the IDE fix's, the sound setup fix's and any other fix's found in the discussions (and yes, reverting them after they failed to fix the problem), I'm still having an issue, and now I can't find iTunes 6 to try to get back to a good time in life... oh why oh why apple, why do you have just as many issues as windows? I had hoped for so much more....
Anyone? Any Ideas? Anyone willing to email me itunes 6 so I can get back to a better time in life? Or provide answers? I've got a horriable track record with apple (over 20 business stopping questions, and to date 0 responses) so I am about 2 minutes from giving up
Sorry apple, but this is way past frustrating... were all your win/tel beta testers using mac's?
HomeBuilt Windows XP Pro ATI 9700 Pro / AMD Athlon 64 3800+ / hampster on treadmill running his head off...

Are sure that's not Flash needed for those videos?

  • When I play a movie through iTunes, audio has no issues but video stutters and skips

    Hey everyone,
    I have a Dell 17R, Windows 8 64 bit, intel i7-3630QM at 2.4 GHZ, 8gb ram, Nvidia GT-650M at 1920x1080 using driver 320.49
When I play a movie in iTunes, the audio works flawlessly but the video will be smooth for a few seconds, stutter and then skip small 2-3 second spots. I haven't noticed that the parts skipped are any more graphically intense than other spots and there is no discernable pattern.
In the past, I have been able to play movies through iTunes with absolutely no problem but when I downloaded this most recent one a few days ago all of my movies have been experiencing the same issue.
When I stream other videos from other sources I do not experience the same problems as I do when I use iTunes. Streaming 1080P over youtube or a similar services is no issue.
I have updated my video drivers to the latest version as well.
I am at a loss, any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks!
